Like most of you I was having terrible problems with an intel 2200bg card in a Dell XPS M170 so I bought a Gigabyte GN-WI01HT (based on Atheros AR5006XS chip) and bingo, problems are gone. I've got a solid connection my access point and I can even see some other access points in the area that never showed up before.

    Hello everyone,
Well add another person to the not happy with their wireless. Too bad I didn't see this post sooner before I got my laptop. I am having the same problems. My connection starts off at 54Mbps and drops down. What is the link for the Atheros card? Would it work in a Compaq Presario V4000t? I got a few more things to try before I would get one of these cards. I am going to try a different router. I am also going to reinstall windows XP and reformat the hard drive. I will also try my notebook out on my schools connection. Otherwise HP/Compaq is going to have one unhappy customer  . I might try asking for a different card from hp. They better give it to me.
Oh yeah, I got pretty tired of reading all the posts so I stoped at page 17 and started reading again at page 43. Could someone give me a brief overview on what works?
    Thanks,
    Tim

I don't know what drivers I am using...but my 2200 b/g works great. I never drop the signal and my D/L speeds aren't bad I have gotten up to 200-300k down. I will post the drivers I have and the link when I get home...or later tonight. Hopefully this will help some of you guys out.

I know this question will be asked like before...I have a Netgear router. (Don't know why it is asked...routers shouldn't reall matter)

Sorry guys, here is the screen shot of my drivers. You may want to search for it online.

This is the site I used...you might want to use both of the drivers listed here and see which on works the best:

    http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/pro2200bg/index.htm

    or

    http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/pro2200bg/index.htm

One of these should be it...it is from the same exact site that I used. Once you install this driver and program...let the Intel Program control your wireless connectivity.

If this works, I hope to sticky it to help all others...but let me know if this works.

Sorry for the late reply...I didn't get home until now. :(

Someone PM me if you are going to do this tonight so I can hear the results.

    Hope this helps! :)

    Oh well,
I already have those drivers installed. I also tried intels little program that came along with it. It didn't help. Should that Atheros card work in my V400t? Where could I get one and how much would it cost?
    Thanks,
    Tim

No problem! I am glad that I could help... I am going to see if the mods can sticky that. I know it won't resolver everyone's issues, but it might help some.

Like I said...I found those like 2-3 days after I started having problems with my 2200 and I have loved it ever since.

The brand of router you use shouldn't make a difference, but it does in many cases. I have a 2915 card that had the same woes, working perfectly in my daughter's school environment, constantly disconnecting in her apartment and frequently disconnecting when she is home. Tried the Netgear Rangemax 240 (a little overkill, but I felt signal interference was perhaps the issue so wanted a router with good signal strength) and, despite the cost, it was worth every penny not to have any more aggravation. Beforehand we had D-Link DI-624 routers, which worked fine with my husband's laptop, but not with my daughter's 2915 card or my other daughter's 2200 card.

The atheros cards only seem to be available on ebay, that's where I got mine. It cost me around €65 but if you're in the US you may get a cheaper $ price. Absolutely recommended, I haven't had a single problem with this card since I bought it unlike the 2200BG which caused me no end of problems.

What Atheros card would I get for the Compaq V4000t? I really don't want to waste money getting a card that wouldn't work :).

I have a v4000t. Everything was working fine in the wireless department.. When I upgraded to the latest HP driver on the HP website, suddenly... I wasn't able to connect to the only campus wireless access point available. I had the exact same problems as people described on previous pages.. It would start at 54 Mbps at Excellent.. Then shift to 11 then 2 then 1 Mbps.. Then it would just work on and off... I didn't even move the laptop at all!! As it turns out... It IS a LinkSys access point.

I installed the really big driver (80+ megs or so).. I chose the Custom install and selected everything.. Got the whole 10.1.0.3 ProSet software... And now everything works perfectly.. It stays at excellent..

Edit: When I press the wireless button to turn off wireless, wait a few seconds.. And then press it again.. I'm connected within about 2 seconds.. MUCH faster than even before!!! I upgraded the drivers on HP site (Faster than the drivers that worked out of the box).

    I'm very happy now :)

I heard that the 8.1.1.0 works the best out of all the current drivers so far and I decided to try it out and to my surprise the connection has never been better between myself and my WRT54g with Tofu13c firmware.

I've been lurking here for a while trying to figure out what is wrong with my Intel Pro 2200 B/G wireless card. I hate having unnecessary programs running on my computer, so I refused to install the proset tools and instead just installed the updated drivers to no avail. Finally after reading this post I broke down and installed the most recent proset tools (10.1.0.3), using the typical installation. Needless to say, I haven't had a wireless issue since. Thanks USAFdude02.

Bought an HP zv5227 a little over a year ago. [P4 3Ghz] w/Broadcom wireless. Took it out of the box, turned it on...bam!, detects wireless network. Few seconds later i'm surfin my buns off. Ordered an HP dv1000 last month, turned it on....bam!, noticed network in area....couldn't connect. Went round and round with hp support.....what a drag, if you know what i mean. So i send it back and get it fixed (supposedly)...same problem. Went round and round with supposed big shot customer relations rep in Texas. Claims he'll test a brand new custom made one for me before it leaves the plant. Right. Second dv1000...useless. So I find a deal, or at least i thought i found a deal on a nice HP nc6220. Brand new, no taxes and 3 year warranty. Wireless doesn't work. Spent an hour on the phone with linksys, doing everything you can think of. No go. Long story short....2200bg worthless. The 5227 might weigh twice as much, but it works twice as good. Good luck all you 2200bg'ers.

Wow this thread is still alive.

All I can say is that the 2200b/g has more problems than any other card I've had experience with or have seen on other people's systems.

My sister's friend whom I setup a Z63A for, has the other one, the umm, uhhh, Intel 2905 something? The ABG one and that holds connections better than the 2200b/c that I had.

Now I've noticed Intels are way more sensitive to wireless noise and radio signals, so I suggest to EVERYONE to try another wireless card.

After switching to the Atheros wireless card I've had NO problems and it is like a wired connection, absolutely fabulous.

    :D

For those who can't afford it, check out the buy/sell forum with the Atheros group buy thread. I got mine for only 60 bucks or so.

    Cheers,
    Mike

I hate re-posting, but it seems some people are still having problems. This has worked for a couple of people already. So I will see if I can get a sticky on this to solve that problem. This is what worked for me and others:

One of these should be it...it is from the same exact site that I used. Once you install this driver and program...let the Intel Program control your wireless connectivity.

If this works, I hope to sticky it to help all others...but let me know if this works.

Okay so I have an update on the situation with my dell inspiron 6000 and its Intel Pro 2200 B/G. Although the new proset version seemed to improve the situation I still had some weird disconnects. I switched my router from the SMC to a Trendnet. The connection has been flawless for the last week or so. Could it be that this card is sensitive to some (cheaper) routers??

Was having trouble with my intel 2100 card for months now. I finally "upgraded" to an intel 2200. I say that because of all the posts here. But I installed it w/ no problems. I just installed the drivers without the proset software and haven't dropped the signal since =) (duration ~1+ day) I used to drop the wireless signal anywhere from 3-6x a day. Enjoying the wireless goodness! OH yeah

I'm having issues with my 2200BG wireless connection, to say the least. I used to be able to connect to a linksys connection from my room but now the wireless card says that it can't find that connection. I can't connect to the WiFi hotspot across the street or at the library on campus either. The library signal showed five bars of signal strength but wouldn't connect for whatever reason. I downloaded and installed the newest versions of the software and device driver but it seems to have made no difference. The connection just quit working last week and hasn't come back since. Any help?

Jeez, and I thought I was the only one in the world with this problem!!!
Own a Sony VAIO VGN-A295HP laptop with, yes you guessed it, a Intel Pro/wireless 2200BG card... Been having more or less the same kind of problems as everybody else here... Connection drop-outs, connection speed usually varying between 48-54 mbps. Messenger, Miranda, Skype, Shoutcast radio, you name it, would disconnect every 20 min or so...

Always thought the problem was related to the router - I use a D-Link 624+. Talked to a D-Link technician via phone support - He told me it was the Intel card... And that I should update with the latest driver and use the Intel PROSet Wireless software to connect with. Well I've only been using the new driver and connection software for a couple of hours now but it seems to work fine, at least so far.

I use several computers on my home network and all of them have predefined IP-addresses. Thus my router is set to static ip-addressing. Why you ask. Well because all of them use software that needs access to the internet, thus each application is set to certain ports tied to their respective ip-address. And the problem with the Intel PROset Wireless software is that you can't use specific, that is, static ip-addressing (at least I haven't seen a option for it in the menus) - The router has to be set to dynamic DHCP! Ah well, guess it's a small price to pay in order to have a working network?

Hi, just discovered some discouraging facts about the Intel PROset wireless software. Although my Wi-Fi seem to work fine, it uses a lot of system resources, way more than I believe is acceptable. I located somewhere around 5 processes related to the wireless connection software. Which in turn results in approximately 50mb of ram usage!
Does anyone know of an alternative, low cost and efficient solution to all of this, then please let us all know.

    Hi USAFdude02,

I read your message about the @#@%-2200BG. It made pretty clear what is going on with my connection, for it also fluctuates between 24Mbps and 54Mbps. I allready blamed my Linksys WRT54G, but after reading this I'm no longer blaming them anymore.

Anyways, I updated my 2200BG Pro/wireless software to version 10.1.0.3, and driver version to 9.0.3.9.
I was hoping for a big improvement, but in my building are total of 8 detectable wireless networks, maybe that causes too much interferrence.

Results after my updates: I thought to see a little improvement; that my adapter recovered a whole lot quicker after a speed drop, I'm talking about 3 to 5 second drops before it comes back up to 54Mbps.
I never have to reconnect, but livestreams, or when downloading are still suffering severely by my 'shorter' speed drops.

However, unfortunately after 15 minutes my speed got stable for a long time at 24Mbps, which was quiet dissappointing. I think more routers where switched on in the building by that time... but that was just an assumption. :(

Maybe I can try connecting on a different fequency/channel.

At least my adapter driver is up to date again ;)

    Best regards,
    Vernon

I had the same problem that everyone seems to be describing here. For me it was even more noticable as the wifi light on the laptop would go off then the connection first dropped and then never come back on. Once it dropped once the connection would loose packets and be very eratic. I had my laptop back to Dell twice trying to fix the problem. They replaced the Intel card both times it was there and of course nothing worked.

Found a post somwhere about it being an issue with the Intel card so I ordered one without the Intel chip. WOW.. got it installed today and it has been working great all day long. You would think that one of these manufacturers would stop using the Intel cards since it seems there is lots of documented issues all over the net with this card.

Yeah I noticed this, and that seems ridiculous in my opinion. So now that I feel that I have a router that seems to work better with this card, I've uninstalled the pro set software. So far things are working ok, but it's only been about 12 hours. We'll see.

Well it's now been a couple of days and I've had no issues with the 2200 since I removed the pro set software. So I'm concluding that this card works better with some wireless routers than others. Just to summarize I was having a lot of problems with my previous SMC router and the 2200. However, the Trendnet router I'm using now seems to work fine with this card.

As i think about, there are way to many issues with this card.

Ill write up a little single post on every driver listed, and a lot of the things mentioned that have worked to fix the issues.

It would be easier to find a solution, and some quick fixes

Another update..... decided to call Dell. Convinced them to send me a Dell 1370 mini pci card (made by broadcom) to replace the 2200. Installed it today. No disconnects and the wifi light on my laptop stays on. Used to go off after 3hrs with the Intel card. But......it doesn't seem to have as good range. I'd rather have the stability than the range though.

I’ve read a few of your posting on Intel PRO/Wireless Card. I have a Sony Laptop FS295XP with the same wireless card and I too have the same problems that others are experiencing on this forum, that is my wireless speed randomly drops from 54Mbps to speeds as low as 1Mbps inconsistently. Are there any fixes for this issue? I have a Netgear router, I also have a Toshiba laptop on my wireless network and that never drops speed.

If there is no solution to this problem, is it possible to insert a PCMCIA wireless card and disable the wireless card? Or Can the built in wireless card be replaced?

    Regards,

    Nazim

Well you can insert a PCMCIA wireless card and it will work. It is just disapointing that intel made such a ****py card.

I would look at the linksys PCMCIA cards.

But if you can, take out the wireless card you have, and buy an Atheros card, which is the best wireless card in my opinion.

There should be a guide for doing this on your laptop, just do a google for it.

I sent you a PM earlier not sure if you got it or not....Do you know if can remove Intel/Pro Wireless 2200BG from the Sony FS295XP laptops? Or are there any fixes...

I spoke to Sony support yesterday and they said they are no "known" issues with the W/LAN card...which is just not true... after readin this forum

There just denying it, dont worry. I got your PM, figured i answer here ;)

You can take the 2200 card out, look for a manual on how to do so on the Sony website. I would highly go with an internal Atheros card for your notebook.

    Hi,

I have an intel proset wireless 2200BG installed on my dell inspiron 6000.

i also have a linksys wrt54g router beside me.

my problem is not like the usual ones i've read here.

initially i had no problems, signal is good, and the rate is relatively stable/constant. but when i shut my computer and rebooted, i can no longer detect the wireless network or any other wireless networks for that matter. i thought there was a glitch with the router but the thing is, my brother and mom are both able to see and connect through it.

after reading through a lot of post, (and after a lot of installing and uninstalling the driver) i still can't get through. i tried managing it both from microsoft client or from intel proset, but still with no luck. Till i read somewhere that i have to restart my wireless zero configuration service. True enough, after 1 whole week without conection, i was able to see the network again (and signal i get is still good). Unfortunately, the same incident happened, when i closed my laptop and rebooted the next day, i can no longer see the wireless network (lest connect to it). It only says "no wireless networks were found in range". To think that the router is right beside my laptop. i tried all the suggestions here but still to no avail...

    hope someone can enlighten me...

    thanks.

btw: my laptop's running on winxp pro with sp2.

Funny, My two laptops with 2200BG works fine. The only time I ever had a problem with it was when I upgraded the wireless driver once. Had the same problems like you guys talk about. Went back to the old driver that came with the laptop, problem went away. Now I use the latest drive from Intel (I upgraded because I wanted to use WPA) and it still works great.

Maybe you guys should set your router and wireless card to only use "G" and not "B", thats what I do. WPA is a good idea too.

    Plus I don't use proset.

Well i am facing something really weird. I have a Sony Vaio FS , bought it 3 weeks ago. The problem is that i am trying to connect to another laptop using my wifi connection. i setup everything required so that the 2 laptops with the same Intel/Pro 2200BG card connect together on channel 11 with the high power and transmission ON and the most recent drivers. I was able to solve the disconnection issue but when connected , i face pings timed out between the replies, and couldnt know the reason beind that. Note that it happens when i try to receive files with big size from shared folders. Im running on AC not battery. The weird thing in the story is that the 2 other laptops when connected together work perfectly. It's happening only when i am the other part of the link  and that's not all , the 3 laptops all have the same card and the same driver installed . How come ?.... I contacted Sony ( live chat ) and spent more than 1 hour answering on their questions and following links they were pasting to me before realizing that it was a bot analyzing what i was typing.... They insisted on upgrading my router firmware ( euuh , i told them many times it's a problem with connection between 2 laptops .. ) . I hope someone will be able to help me ( Also with that kind of bad support , i would really like to know why Sony laptops are so overpriced compared to others ) . Many thanks.

    Karim.

Hi, long time reader / first time poster of this fine thread :)

I have an Inspiron 6000 and the mighty 2200bg card. Like everyone else I have tried most drivers posted on this thread but to no success. I'll have a healthy connection one minute, and bang, gone the next.

I decided I'd had enough and bought a Trendnet Card last week.

First I must say, I didn't remove the Intel card, so that maybe a problem.

Anyway, I installed it and added it to the network. The signal is good (for what I payed for the card) but after about 15 mins of being connected to my Linksys router, it stops RECEIVING packets, but continues to SEND. The connection stays alive somewhat more than my Intel connection did, but it becomes relatively lifeless and pointless.

Microsoft Firewall is disabled and I'm running McAfee software.

That feeling of stability when I had the card connected for the first time was so good, but was soon replaced that by familiar feeling of gloom, waiting for the connection to die.

Am I missing out on something minor? I havn't done much altering with the new Card, too annoyed to be honest.

    Any help very much appreciated,
    Adam.
