    :::

    Have you try uninstall McAfee....??
You don't need that if you are behind a
Router. You have hardware firewall already!

argh... I just received my new Dell notebook yesterday - with the 2200 - and I can't connect to my wireless network! It says it's connected, then a few seconds later I get a message saying that it can't connect!
The other laptop in the house has a 2915, which works perfectly.

I think posting a Sticky on how to fix this problem is a great idea!

    Hi.
I have this problem with my new Dell notebook too. It connects to public hotspots great, so I'm just going to get a new router for home. (my other laptop connects at home fine.) Can someone please suggest a router? Can I get something good for $50? You can reply to DaffyDan@yahoo
Also note, Intel is putting out a new driver in May. Any hope this will fix things?

I thought I would share something that I recently fixed (after many hours worth of struggle).

My laptop connected to the internet fine, until a short while ago. What happened was that it kicked out every twenty minutes or so. I surfed perfectly for that time, then the wifi light started to flicker for about a minute, and bam - it was gone. I attempted to go and try to configure it or the connection, but it froze up every time. The only way I got the wireless re-enabled is to do a full restart - the the same process over again.

I uninstalled the wireless drivers and software, got new drivers, same problem. Used both the PROSet utility and the Windows generic software. I also set the card to stay on no matter what, so it's odd that it went off. And it doesn't turn off normally - it 'gasps for air' for a minute, then dies completely . . I found it very odd.

I finally got fed up with it, so I completely uninstalled the WLAN adapter, rebooted, with the intent of reinstalling the drivers as I had before. But on reboot, windows found it as usual, but actually installed it. I don't know where it found the drivers. I've been on wireless for a while now, and it works flawlessly - downloading and surfing is no problem. Signal strength is much stronger.

Anyone else find that as an odd fix?

@Chaz: Odd? Not really. Sometimes Windows just gets confused and drivers get screwed up. Often the best fix is to completely uninstall drivers and/or hardware, reboot, and let Windows "fix" itself. I've come across this fix in 2200/2915 threads on other sites.

Hm, I suppose so. I just found it suprising that Windows actually found the drivers for it. Maybe I should set my expectations higher. ;)

    But, glad it's fixed now.

I have the same issue with an Intel PRO/Wireless 2195 ABG Card running at 54G. I am currently using an ASUS Z71A Barebones notebook with the card installed. I am stuck using the 9.0.1.9 version of the drivers because the Z71A has special software that controls the indicator lights and button functions (Such as invoking power management features, LED status of WIFI…). For the most part, I disabled the 54G portion of the card, and now I am able to maintain a stable connection but at the reduced rate of 802.11B. I can’t switch over to the Microsoft Client, because that would disable the functions of the wireless on/of switch. (Rather than a mechanical straight on/off switch, the switch is software controlled.). I know the prospect of running at “B” defeats the purpose of the 2915 or the 2200, but for those of you who are stuck, maybe this can help.

Do you notice a slower surfing or download speed when running at 802.11b specifications? If you think about it, your Internet connection is probably not as fast as 11Mbps. Thanks for the tip.

Whoops...yeah-it depends on the internet speed. "B" is highly matured for its age, but yeah-no slow performance with the internet. I use the "G" for file transfers to and from ad-hoc networks for sometimes faster file transfers.

    Hey there!
I've got the same problems as most people here - I am not getting a constant speed from my Intel/Pro Wireless 2200BG WLAN card, which was preinstalled in my Inspiron 6000.
I get 54.0 Mbps with full signal at startup, and then within a minute, or if i stream music from my desktop PC with iTunes, the connection speed will drop to 48.0 Mbps, then 36.0, then 24.0 and struggles to get to 48.0 Mbps, but never back up to 54.0 Mbps.
I've finally got sick and tired of spending hours on this piece of c**p that Intel have made, sold and still sell, with brand new notebooks. I've took the advice of many users that have posted on this topic and many others that are similar, and have decided to look into buying the Broadcom alternative to this, this, thing!;)
I have just one question, if I were to find the Broadcom one for sale, purchase it and replace the Intel card with the Broadcom card, would the WiFi light on my laptop function the same as it does with my current Intel one? I know this is tedious and insignifiacnt, but it would be nice if this sh***y card can be "replaced" completely.
    Many thanks,
    Barry Cent

Just to mention that there is a new driver on the Intel website: 9.0.4.13, which may help with dropped connections.
BTW, all of you suffering hideous problems have my full sympathy -- but we've been more fortunate. Our (residential) WLAN has 3 of these cards in various Dell Inspirons, with a Linksys WRT54G v5 router running a WPA2 network. Since finding the right location for the Linksys, we have had no real problems: signal degradation and speed reduction correlate very closely, but neither is apparent at all until we get more than 1 floor away from the Linksys. Even 2 floors away, we seldom go below a good signal and 36 to 24Mb. Guess we've been very lucky!
Good luck with the new driver, anyway.

I think the problem can get from bad to WORSE. See my thread on http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=56314

I can't connect whatsoever after a while and now I am getting bunch of error in "Even Viewer", such as:

The COM+ Event System attempted to fire the EventObjectChange:: ChangedSubscription event but received a bad return code. HRSEULT was 80040201.

Don't know if this is related, but it happened at the time when I can't connect to my WLAN anymore.

Crap, I can't even uninstall the Intel PROSet/Wireless software. It'll just show "Initializing Setup Data. Please wait..." and it stuck like that forever. I tried leaving the computer for 30 minutes and it stays like that.

Stupid Intel network card... why can't they just let other good manufacturer (like Broadcom) use their WLAN card and just stick to CPU.

I was having major issues with mine as well.. first I was running a dlink 650 nic card, and a dlink 524 hacked to 624 for booster, was dropping every hr or so. so I returned both, bought a linksys wrt54gs and started to use the internal intel 2200BG nic. I was dropping every 10 mins like clockwork. spent hrs trying things, I finally upgraded to the latest driver 9.0.4.13 and it seems to be working great. Mind you I only had about an hr or so to use it before I had to go to work last night, but never dropped a connection once. I tried the old driver method mentioned pages ago in this thread, but when I installed the driver, I had a ! on my network card in device drivers, so i downloaded this 76 meg upgrade thing with teh latest driver and so far all is good.

This post was very helpful. I was having the same problem with my Toshiba Satellite with an internal Intel 2200BG NIC and my Airport Express with Airtunes. My Dell notebook had no problem keeping a solid connection with the router, but when I switched to the Toshiba the Airtunes kept stopping in the middle of songs. I noticed that the speed kept changing from 54.0 Mbps to 24.0 Mbps. Based on the info in this post, I upgraded the Intel driver to version 9.0.4.13 and now it works perfect.

I have a laptop compaq v4000 with the stupied wireless 2200BG wireless card installed
Have talked to Compaq many times and found out that they can not installl another wireless card in this coumputer because the bios setting are locked. So anyone that is going to buy a laptop coumputer beware of this wireless card.

Because you may be stuck with it forever.

and I belive that intel should quit making these junk wireless cards and
for all of the coumputer that have the 2200bg wireless card installed and have it locked in the coumputers bios ----Intel shoud fit the bill to replace all of those coumputers and replace them all with new laptops with out the stupied wireless
    2200BG card.

hmm...so how do i find out if my bios is locked? If it is does this mean that i can't use any other wireless adapter, in my slots or USB/FIREWIRE plugs?

my 2200BG apparently crapped out a couple of weeks ago and ill be pissed if i can never use wireless with this machine again.

You can use a PC card or USB wireless card, but you cant get other mini PCI card. Mainly Compaq\HP have the BIOS locked.

I found out that the V4000t I have, they install the wrong HP part number.

You might have to take a look at that.

Very similar experience. I have an ACER 4060 with a 2200BG card connected through a D-link 524 router. I had random poor connectivity, with widely ranging wireless speeds appearing to be the problem. I thought at first it was the D-link router, tried all the FAQ fixes without luck but then D-link Support in Oz [email protected]' would not respond. I've had D-links for a few years and they used to be very good - cost cutting I guess.

Then I attached my wife's Dell laptop with a Broadcom wireless card to the router without any problems. I found this forum (I'd tried Experts Exchange and many others without finding this issue.)

I had tried to upgrade the driver for the wireless card using Device Manager, but always got the message that my driver (9.0.1.9) was up to date. Seeing in this forum that it wasn't (!), I downloaded driver 9.0.4.13 from the Intel site http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/CS-010623.htm and all was fixed. I've since upgraded again to 9.0.4.17, but with a few heartstopping moments when the install froze, and I got errors, but all seems to work after rebooting and reparing the link using the Intel utility in the download.

    Thanks for your help.

Having the same problem with this, on my Toshiba Centrino . went to Toshiiba's site and found a new driver which I downloaded and installed after I uninstalled first what I had. It's been a while every since and my connection hasn't dropped yet, while it used to drop every 5 minutes and then the only thing I could do to bring it back was to reboot and have it for just an other 5 min.
Anyway guys here is the link of the driver I downloaded and installed. Good luck with it , I hope it solves your problem.

I have similar problems with this Intel 2200bg crap.
Tried to watch mpeg files from main desktop and the streaming stutters all the time. Then tried to do the same with a Intersil chipset PCcardand it worked flawlessly.
I will be tossing this Intel junk and replacing it with an Atheros mini-PCI card

    ASUS M6Va/ Linksys WRT54GS with DD-WRT firmware

"New News": Changed DD-WRT settings to factory defaults. Video streaming
    is now working

    Hi,
I saw your post on this site and saw that you also basically had the same problem/issue what i am seeing here. The issue with my Sony VAIO VGN-FS980 is that the wireless connection gets disconnected very often( every 5-10 mins) and automatically connects up sometimes also. I don't know whats the issue there as the link is always there. I had upgrared the latest driver from the Intel site and still no improvement. It bets dropped off very frequently. Its been hapenning for last 1 week and I have eben earlier using the laptop for last 3 months without any trouble. Don't know what has hapenned. I even restored the laptop to the factory settings, but still no luck. My wireless router is a Netgear one. I have my roommates using it without an issue. Even I have a Dell laptop form office and its working perfectly without any connection drop off. I even took the external Dell wireless LAN card from my friend and installed it in my laptop and its wokring perfectly fine. So, definitely there is issue with the Intel PRO/ 2200BG internal wireless card, not sure what it is and how can I fix it? I am not sure if its a hardware problem also. Please suggest how to fix this problem. I am really having a tough time to use the internet in this way. Any suggestions and appreciated.
    Thanks,
    Suman.

    I have a Sony VAIO VGN-A197VP (PCG-8Q4M) with a dreaded 2200BG in it.

I've not noticed the connection dropping, but quite often when I try and connect, it takes ages to acquire an IP address, and never gets there - it finishes making the connection but there is no IP address registered!

I can solve the problem by uninstalling and re-installing the drivers, but that's hardly a long term solution.

I've tried new drivers, old drivers, OEM drivers, but it's all the same. Are there any other pointers?

    Hi,
I have a Qosmio F15-AV201R with this wireless adapter. My laptop recognizes it but I get an exclamation mark on this item at the device manager. I tried everything: new drivers from Intel, Toshiba, etc, but my laptop can not recognize the adapter. I do not have the wireless network connection under my Network Connections folder. Could you please shed some light on this subject? What should I do? The wireless switch is on.
    Thanks

    SOLVED!

I've been having the dropped connection (1.0 mbps) problem for a few months now. After trying numerous drivers and even a new router, I have finally solved the problem. I'm not sure if any one of these steps below did the trick or if you need to do all of them. Here they are (Thanks to Cranky who posted these on www.linksysinfo.org):

    1) make sure that the Power Management and the Transmit Power option sliders in the hardware configuration (Control Panel->Network Connections->Wireless Network Connection 2200BG->Properties->Configure->Advanced) are set to their max positions. It was even suggested somewhere to deselect default, set them to a low position, ok the dialog and then go back again and raise them to full just incase something wasnt' picking up the default value of "high" properly. ( http://support.intel.com/support/wireless/wlan/sb/cs-006205.htm)

    2) Install the Windows XP update Update for Windows XP (KB893357) ( http://www.microsoft.com/downloads/...4D-E7C1-48D6-95EE-1459234F4483&displaylang=en) which adds support for WPA2 but also seems to include a improvment to WPS for network discovery.

    3) Make sure you are running the newest Intel drivers :( http://downloadcenter.intel.com/scripts-df-external/Product_Filter.aspx?ProductID=1637)

Try to enable SSID broadcast on your router/AP!
I've been watching my network for several days now and it seems to be stable.
    My setup: Dell 600M, 2200BG driver v9.0.4.33, WinXP SP2
    Router/AP: 2Wire 2700, G mode, WPA-TKIP;
I can see 4 more wireless networks around me with signal strength from -40dBm (excellent) to -83 dBm (weak).
I had similar problem with my Dell 600M and integrated Pro/wireless 2200BG. At first laptop connects to AP with full speed of 54Mb/s and after sometime downrates to 2Mb/s and stays there unless I reconnect. Signal strength stays excellent (-30dBm) and dropped packet rate doesn't increase. I didn't loose link. I tried several versions of Intel drivers and sooner or later same thing happened with all of them. It ranged from 10-15min with v21 to 60-90min with v33.
This looks like a driver bug to me, though I’m not an expert in WLAN drivers.

BTW enabling SSID broadcast should pose no security threat if you use WPA.

    I hope this helps.

    Hi guys

I too am having lotsa problems with this router. I have an Acer laptop running on Windows XP SP2 and the internet connection and download speed keep jamming up. I was advised to switch off the router whenever the connect hangs and then switch it on again after a few seconds. I've been plugging and unplugging every 15-20min ever since in order to have a decent connection speed. I have a broadband connection but it's worse than dial-up! Can somebody please help?? Thanks!

make sure you have the latest drivers in your router and nic card's. If that does not help you will need to post what mfg router and nic cards.

I have an odd problem. My Inspiron 6000 with the 2200BG connects with WPA encryption, no problem, very stable.

However, I've just picked up a Dlink DSM 320, which only supports WEP. So I set the Linksys router up for WEP, enter the Hex key as the password, and it will not connect. When I enter the password into the firmware, it provides me with 4 different Hex Keys, and allows me to select which one. I don't understand why I get great connection with WPA, but none with WEP.

Router is Linksys WRT 54gl with Thibor WRT firmware.

    Suggestions?

WEP is useless for security. Go back to your WPA, and return the dlink if that's all it will support.

I finally gave up on the useless 2200BG in my Dell 6000 after seeing the range
my wife gets on her cheap Acer !! I bought an Atheros 5213A on ebay for $22 and it works perfectly ! I could not even pick up my own network on the back patio, now I get an excellent signal on it and can see 3 neighbours networks as well !!

After one and a half years of suffering the unstable speed and dropped connections of this intel wireless card, I believe they have finally solved the problem with the latest driver version 9.0.4.36.

Tested this for one hour today and seems to be very stable with no fluctuation of speed seen! Guess they finally did it. But taking one and a half years just to solve this issue leaves very much to be desired.

    Good luck guys!

Wow!!! All these years, 55 pages later, and still no clear cut solution to this problem yet. I know the newer drivers didn't solve anything. Did everyone just go purchase external wireless cards or something or just learn to deal with the problem??? I may go the route of a wireless card...The drops in speed are just too much at this point and the only way for me to resolve the issue is to disconnect and reconnect and even then sometimes it may still be at 48...

I have a Dell Inspiron 1500 with the Intel 2200bg network adapter. Sometimes it connects and then suddenly connection is lost. If I try to reconnect suddenly no networks were found anymore (even not connections from neighbours). Sometimes repairing with the windows wifi managing tools helped. Most of the time the only solution was to wait or to get a cable.

I always had problems with this and for long i thought this was due to my router. At that time I didn't have other non wired connections so no compare. Recently my router stopped working (think it's an power adapter problem) so i got a new one thinking this would also solve the problem. No way. I now also have a desktop wireless and that one connects without problems and stays connected with some Belkin adapter.

Updating drivers, reinstallation, using windows instead of the intel tool, disable power management on adapter, ... I tried a lot.

I will try for making b connection only now. I also understand using WPA instead of WPA2 can help.

Try going into your adapter properties and configure it. Then for the power saving settings, uncheck the default and set it to the highest or maximum transmit power even in battery mode. Also, check this thread http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=27745 . You may consider getting an Atheros card, I`m looking for one too since I do have same issues like yours from time to time. Hope this helps.

Intel drivers work but there way of installation is picky. You must install all of the updates in the order released. Most all of there updates were updates/patches to the original release.

The constant dropping an loosing the AP indicates the chipsets between the too are not compaitable. I have realtec that will not talk to a USR. Constanly drops every few minutes. But the same card to a Broadcom AP works fine. Sometimes drivers can fix the problem but not all.

The power saving is already disabled. That didn't help much. Thx for the url!

I install the latest drivers from intel website (not dell). Do you imply I need to do multiple installs? Where can i find more patches/updates then?

It's my second router. My first USR had problems and now my linksys has problems as well. I really think it's related to the intel chipset, not the router. And also I expect from a wireless card that it connects to all routers, if linksys and usr doesn't work, i have not much left, dlink, belkin, .... and how much of these use the same chipset!?

Don't even consider BELKIN, they are junk.

I do not know which LInksys you have, but have you tried installing dd-wrt on it. The Linux firmware is really good. I run it on my Buffalo router and is real solid, no problems what so ever. Depending on which model you have you may only beable to load the mini version of the dd-wrt firmware. I would give it a try before buying another router.

On the Intel firmware you should update your drivers in the order they were released. Since intel uses patches, skipping one will cause problem, because 1 dll did not get changed.

I will certainly not buy another router. I just have a new one, a linksys wrt54gc not sure if that firmware is supported. Will investigate. The belkin adapter is for my desktop, and it works like a charm, in contrast with the intel chipset.

I will also check the right intel drivers first. I read I need to manually identify the version to make sure installation went well. If not I should update driver manually. I might try it all under linux as well. Desktop is running ubuntu, I could make laptop dual boot.

edit: dd-wrt is not supported for the compact router version. So it's still original firmware.

I now set my router to mixed (b/g) and the intel 2200bg to b only. And until now all works just fine. Didn't loose any connections anymore. Let's hope that's a solution. For internet this is just fine. For local network this is way to slow but then i can still get a cable for fast transactions.

The driver version I use is 9.0.4.37.
