.... HD DVD is getting desperate .... thinking about getting it for my dad![]()
-
Tempting...
You still need to buy software that can play HD-DVD though
.
-
for the simple fact the hd war is pretty much over this seems like a waste of $80.
-
who the heck buys or rents movies anymore. PPV is all the craze now.
-
Tell me when you can buy Universal, Weinstein, Paramount, or Dreamworks movies on Blu ray...When you can, that when the "war" is over.

Link for me says

It's pretty much over. I think everyone realizes that now. But that doesn't mean blu-ray will success.
But that is a good deal, if you can get the free dvds. I bought mine (for the 180) simply for the free heroes hd-dvd box set.
Um... not for those of us who care about quality. Granted, SD-TV ownership still owns a huge percentage of the market, but you cannot stream real HD content. Best you get is 720p and I don't think that even gives you surround. Streaming 1080i/p with full 7.1 surround would require a huge amount of bandwidth... Actually, it would have to be downloaded first. Hard to strem 35-50 gigs worth of date :-D -
Agreed, I didn't spend a lot of $ to not use 7.1
-
It's now officially $120 MSRP IIRC.
-
i can't believe that the blu-ray's capacity isn't enough. not to mention that blu-ray is designed for recording high def video. it's not just the studio that will determine when the 'war' is over. it'll ultimately be up to the consumer. however, i doubt that enough people will care about blu-ray's quad layer storage capacity, which, on it's own, will get me to purchase blu-ray media/hardware/movies. who knows, i know people who still have 8 tracks...
-
An HD DVD is not?
*throws rest of argument out of window*
-
with the same capacity? however, i doubt it matters anyway as hd-dvd will be dead once universal and paramount announce their support for blu-ray. oh wait, i think they just did. i'm glad i was one of the people that was happy that ms didn't tack on hd capabilities for more money to their 360. i'd rather spend time working out the blu-ray/linux capabilities for *ahem* backing up media on my laptop than have it combined in a console.
btw,
pretty soon it seems! -

Yeah... HD-DVD IS dead, kinda pointless to buy a dead format, no? -
This too: http://www.ps3fanboy.com/2008/02/19/universal-officially-announces-swap-to-blu-ray/
When you already have Blockbuster, Netflix, and Walmart jumping shift, it was already the nail in the coffin. It was inevitable since late last year that BluRay would win. It's like a big Itoldjaso to all those naysayers.
They're already experimenting with 200GB Bluray disks. That makes me really excited, personally.

You guys think Toshiba delayed the announcement so that Microsoft could lower the price and get rid of some of these drives?
-
I've got the HD DVD player for my Xbox 360. With the amount of movies that I got for free with it (Heroes Season 1 on HD DVD, plus 7 other movies for free) the player "paid for itself". I dont mind that the format is going away - I've got plenty of movies in my HD catalog, and I'm racking up on some more now that Amazon is offering some pretty good discounts. I got some GC's for Best Buy and put them towards the purchase of a PS3 not too long ago. I only wanted it for the Blu-Ray, so I guess I'm covered as far as that is concerned.
-
Not when there's still over 300 movies out for it right now and a few more to trickle out in the near future and when the price is so low. You can still get plenty of enjoyment out of it, just like if I bought a Sega Dreamcast for cheap right now. Its not too bad, I just need an HDTV to actually make use of it. If I did, I would go for it and later get a Blu-Ray player.
-
If it drops to $50, I'll consider it. Really.
-
me too. this is one of the reasons why i hoped blu-ray would win out. i didn't care about which movie/studio was on a particular format. you can always rip the hd-dvd movie and burn it to blu-ray if you happened to have invested in a large collection. at some point in time i would really like to have the ability to burn all my porn to 1 disc and, well, quite honestly, hd-dvd is just not gonna cut it where blu-ray will.
-
Well its $50 now...
You can still get the 5 free movie ( i think that end soon... real soon.)
But still...
360 hd dvd player 80$
