My local Best Buy had 4 of them so I picked one up yesterday for $449 . These things would be long gone if they had one on display in the store. For my sake I'm glad they didn't.

I'm happy with it so far, haven't really tried much on it yet, still working on cleaning it up.

I just picked one of these up for $529. Not as low as some others paid, but definitely better then the $799 I was going to spend. Thanks Slayer for letting us in on this great deal.

    Hi dwnhller,

Did you use the High-Speed Interent (HSI) $100 coupon with it!?!? If not, most likely you could have.

BTW, how many did they have left at your locale!?!?

    G! :)

BIG, BIG thanks to Slayerfaith for alerting us to the deal!

Just some apps that I'm not going to use, MS Works, Office 2007, Norton, and some of the Gateway diagnostic stuff. There doesn't really seem to be a whole lot of crap on this like I expected. I'm also doing some tweaking based on the lists from Blackviper.com.

I would have probably went higher resolution if I had my druthers, but you really can't complain for the price. Quality wise I can't find anything wrong with it, crisp and bright.

    Hi Mobile (Clint) ...

Thanks for posting back ... that is all I needed to hear ... "Crisp & Bright" ...

I have not opened my Box and I wanted to be sure Screen is half decent ... well sounds like it is more than decent.

BTW, have you run "PC Wizard" http://www.cpuid.com/pcwizard.php to see who is the Manufacturer of the Screen ... just Curious.

    Thanks,

    G! :)

I'm comparing it side by side with my wife's 10 day old Compaq CQ50 and this is a tad crisper and brighter. I don't know if her colors are set a little warmer, but white's are whiter on the M-6862. Viewing angles are about the same on both, good from side, decent from below, and colors invert fast from above. I'm not an expert in the whole screen quality area though, so I couldn't tell you if this is better or worse than normal, but it seems pretty typical for new laptops.

The screen is listed as Samsung in PC Wizard, that's it, no model number or anything. The CQ50 has a LGPhillipsLCD LP154WX4-TLCB if that means anything to you.

    Hi Mobile Clint,

Wow ... what a nice description ... Thanks!

Actually I was just curious see who Gateway was using. I was surprised to see that your wife's Compaq thoguh has a LG.

As I have been hearing and reading the LCD qualitites have all pretty much caught up so a Samsung screen it would be as nice as an LG ... however, these companies make differnt "grades" of the same product ... so!

    Thanks again,

    G! :)

QueenofSpades, I can't send private messages, so can you send the coupon to [email protected]? Also, is Best Buy's website accurate about store availability? According to their site this laptop is unavailable at every store near me.

Sent you the coupon, as well as a couple of others who asked.

The availability tracker is, unfortunately, pretty accurate. I grabbed the last one at my local Best Buy and when I got back to work it was listed as out of stock. Try some area codes around you and see if you can find something in stock out a bit farther. Or you could always call to double check. But yeah, it's pretty spot on. Sorry.

    Hi Darien,

I drove 117 miles one way ... but then again it was only about 30 miles from my cousin home ... so I got a free dinner on my way back. :D

Figure even with gas prices at ~ $3.90 a gallon it is a hell of saving.

Edit: Hey Darien ... I was just playing with the BB website locator ... do a search by State and don't plug-in your City or Zip code ... it will show you everything ...Then call the one that is within a reasonable driving distance PERSONALLY and give your SKU number and ask for the PRICE ... otherwise online the price keep coming up $699 ...

I just did a search for California without the zip code or city and the two stores that came up which have it are 200 and 300 miles away. Even over 50 miles would be much too far for me.Maybe I should get one from eBay, although they are selling between $600 and $640 there.

If you want this Specific laptop BAD ENOUGH ... then see if you can get the $600 one down to $550 or $575 ... that is a good buy ... becuase right now the cheapest available in Store is about $499 and if you can't use the HSI coupon your cost would come with TAX to around $550ish.

Have you tried Craigslist ... and just give them an offer ...

Here is a funny situation ... if you can WAIT till Thanksgiving .. there will be a lot more BETTER deals out and even Better Specs.

    G! :)

Isn't there going to be a huge line of people waiting overnight to get the after Thanksgiving deals, though?

Do you think it is worth paying over twice as much for the P-7811FX?

Thanksgiving sales are a real pain in the b*tt. Too little supply and too much demand. You also gotta wait like 20 hours on line to get something if that.
    no thanks.

the P-7811 is worth the cash for something that will run all your current games close to max settings.

Yeah, agreed. In 2005 my sister and I waited outside Circuit City in like 35 degree weather for 8 hours to get one of those $199 laptops. There were numerous incidents with people trying to cut in line, and by the time they started taking people in, the AOL service connection went down (it was $449-$250 AOL rebate = $199). Thinking back on it, it was an adventure, and those laptops are still in my family running strong, but I'll never wait out in the cold that long for anything again.

To all of the folks that found this Deal by accident ...

I wonder how a person can find a Deal like this in Future ... I am sure there will more deals like this coming up ... but if there is no Floor Model ... how in the world can a person find a Jewel in the Rough ... like this deal!?!?

Any thoughts or suggestions ... or maybe a BB Employee who also signs on NBR!?!?

    Thanks,

    Hi folks,

@ Darien ... Wait out those guys on Craigslist ... I have a feeling they will NOT get a buyer ... not all of them anyway. Then call them and tell them that you are a Student (I assume) on a low budget and offer them $500 or whatever you think is FAIR and go with that ... I think a $500 or $525 is excellent buy still.

@ gothalo ... it is NOT a SALE ... it is a Close-Out ... so you must check with your local BBs if they have any and how much it is $$$. Read the Thread ... you'll see what I mean ... Go to BB site and do a search by your STATE ... it will show you if there are ANY of these laptops in all of your State. Call them and see what the Price is. When you go to the Store to buy it ask them to Sign-Up for the High-Speed-Internet (HSI) service ... You can find the Providers on BB website. They will give you $100 OFF ... You know you can Cancel the Service if you don't need it right-away! ;)

    G! :)

Thanks for the tip gonwk. Unfortunately I won't be one of the lucky ones. My local BB is sold out of these laptops, as well as lots of other laptops. The employee I talked to said that they will be getting more laptops shipped to the store in 3-4 weeks if anyone is wondering.

I'm not a student, and I wouldn't be surprised if the ones on craigslist sold for those prices since there's many people on eBay trying to buy them in the $600 to $650 range including shipping.

I just bought one for less than $500 bucks in Cali. Have to drive over 200 miles round trip to get it though. I wanted to buy more than one but there was only the one I have on hold left. Oh and the one that I got has all the bloatware removed by Geeksquad. A free 30 buck service I am told. It was brand new and not a display model. I am fairly happy with this machine so far.

I just looked at the box contents and realized that this laptop does not come with a remote control. ***? it has an HDMI out so if you hook it up to your LCD/Plasma then you are supposed to get up and operate the controls everytime?
Is there a remote available for this laptop?

i just got my m-6862! YAY! man so lucky there was one in stock at a BB 15 mins away from me and it was with geeksquad and they optimized it so it was back on stock before it wasn't in stock, so at first the guy i was about to buy it from scan everything and it came out to 774 (524.99) + 159optimized + tax) i didn't have enough so put it on hold, i called a friend to burrow money and when we went back to buy it and this time it was a differen't worker so when he scan the price for me he didn't include the 159 just 524.99 so i got it for 524.99+tax :]

they installed trend micro antivirus (39.99) and webroot SpySweeper(29.99) and theres another charge which i don't know what it is, but the 2nd worker didn't scan the barcode for the other stuff i guess he was too lazy or just didn't realize it was optimized by geeksqaud

I've been checking several times a day on bestbuy.com with my zip code for a store that has them near me and a new store showed up yesterday that says they're available. It's just over 10 miles from me. I'm going to call them when they open and ask how many are left and what the price is.

But I'm wondering, if they say the price is $699.99, is it possible it will be cheaper when they scan it in the store? And can they scan it for me while I'm on the phone? It's not possible for them to sell it to you without scanning it, is it?? I'd rather not go there just to find they're going to charge me $699.99.

EDIT: I just got off the phone and it turns out they don't really have any even though it said they do on the site. Anyone selling this for under $550?

Note: It came with recovery CDs for 32/64 bit Vista, but no A/V CDs.

So, I can't find it in any of the local bestbuys - only one in Charlotte, which is like 3 hours away. So, the online price is 699, and after tax works out to about 750. With ebay being a crapshoot, is there any hope?

    Greyhound to charlotte? :)

Seriously I would try it simply because in store you can get it for what seems like sub-$425 with the HSI coupon which is a ridiculous price for a laptop like this! :D

    Hi ncwildcat,

If it is "Only" 3 hours away ... you should be able to Talk to the Manager at the closest one to you and get the same price ... he/she is basically "Price Matching" their own product.

I have found otu if one Manager at one Store (like Customer Service Mgr) does not want to do it ... if you talk to Computer Dept. Mgr you might get a different answer ... or even the Overall Store Mgr ...

There must be at least 2 or 3 BB within your 25 or 30 miles range ... try them all ... much better than driving 3 hours ... but DO IT NOW ... before that Store is Out-Of-Stock ... then they might have an excuse not to do a PM.

    Post back if successful.

    G! :)
