    VERY nice deal. Rep+

    LOL.

What's with the HDD pricing though? -$50 to downgrade? Or upgrade to two 320GB HDDs in RAID for $0? Or -$25 for 250GB x 2? Or only a $100 for 128GB SSD?

I'm a little concerned about buying the 1730 because of it's size. I currently have a Gateway FX P-7811 but I'm looking for something smaller and more mobile. Is the 1730 similar in size and weight? Or should I look into the NP8662for mobility?

    FYI!

It appears that Dell is shipping out the 32-bit version of Vista Home Premium with this deal. I spent a lot of time on the phone this morning dealing with this issue. I asked if they would put the 64-bit version in and they said they would be happy to; and they would also charge "full" price for the system (i.e., you will pay $450 extra for that 9800M GT SLI on a base price of $999). So, if you want to run the 64-bit version and you don't already have access to one, you will need to get your own copy.

See post #16043 for a possible work around:

Not going to grab one but I checked and employee pricing works, 7 percent off and they throw in vista 64 bit. I would buy one if I was looking right now.

OK, I just spoke with another Dell rep about this deal. According to the rep, there are two different versions of the M1730: A and B. The A version, which is the one on sale, is somehow limited so that it can only take up to 4GB of physical RAM (hence, that is the maximum upgrade that is offered) and that is why they only ship the computer with the 32-bit OS. So, according to the rep, even if I were to install a 64-bit OS, some of my RAM would still be "lost".

OK, it was at this point that my head almost exploded. As it says by my user ID, I am a newbie to all of this and I am trying like mad to educate myself, but it is still a little confusing. I found this:

    http://support.microsoft.com/kb/929605

See the 'Workaround' section. So, because the address space of this computer (or rather, the chipset) is capped at 4GB, it won't matter if I run a 64-bit OS as I still won't have all 4GB of RAM available to me. Is this correct? If so, my question is: Is this still a good deal, or should I look for a system where the chipset accepts more than 4GB of RAM?

No they didn't....I went in a different way (not using the link in the front of this thread ) and it defaulted to a 8700 SLI, and messed the pricing up as well. But I just double-checked my order and it definitely has the 9800 SLI on mine.

My post was about employee discount which can sometimes knock off another 7%. Which does not work with this deal.

they both have 1 GB GDDR3 GPU...just that XPS is in sli (2 x 512MB). Is one supposed to be better than the other??

if so how much performance difference is between the GPU's of Gateway FX and XPS laptops???
