I think you'd be extremely lucky if it stayed until the end of May.
If you want one, get it now.

Thanks! I understand that the 64-bit can read the memory, but I am concerned that the chipset is actually hardwired to top out at 4GB, so therefore even a 64-bit OS won't address all 4GB of RAM that I install (which is why the Dell rep said they ship it with the 32-bit OS). This is an example of what I am talking about (especially post#6 by Shyster1):

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=274364&highlight=address+space

Sorry if I am belaboring the point; I just want to make an informed decision.

Thanks to everybody for all the help.

hey guys ! I come from China and now live in China.
I wanna but two now. I really itch to pick out the money from my pocket and try to grab 2.
BUt I can not becasue I live in China and DELL do not sell such promotion types to here. Now I am finding my friend to help me so.
I called a DELL sales agent yesterday, a girl names Catherine, she told me that the price is of no problem. She also have no idea why it is so cheap. She alo remind that the promotion price may only last for a week. Promotion normally last from Thursday to next Wednesday.
Now I am waiting for news from my United States friend and wait for wire transfer him money.
See, how funny, I have the money right now, but I can not buy it.

And one more interesting is: Just like
    Quote:
No they didn't....I went in a different way (not using the link in the front of this thread ) and it defaulted to a 8700 SLI, and messed the pricing up as well. But I just double-checked my order and it definitely has the 9800 SLI on mine.

Here is also like this situation. I can open the thread gaven by Mr.Moo. But when I logn in the DELL USA official wen site, I just can not find this XPS 1730 with such low price. I can only find some XPS M1730 with more than $2000.
So interesting? Maybe man can only find that in USA?

From Intel's Web site, regarding the 945PM mobile chipset:

Dual-channel DDR2 667MHz Memory Support Up to 10.7GB/s of bandwith and up to 4GB memory addressability, for faster system responsiveness.

Doh!!!! After I posted this, I realized that the 1730 has the 965 chipset. But it does support 8GB of memory.

I'm wondering about the HDD pricing and processor. Should I upgrade to 2.4GHz atleast? From T8100 to T8300 (60$)? Or are there better alternatives?

    And the HDD pricing

Default is the 320GB 7200 RPM, but you can change to 2x 320GB 5400 RPM (640GB) for no charge. For 25$ less, you can get 2x 250GB 5400 RPM. For 50$ less you can get 250GB 7200 RPM.

For 25$ more, you get the 500GB 7200 RPM. For 100$, you get the 128GB SSD, add a 25$ on top of that you get a Raid setup with the 128GB + 250GB 7200 RPM (one for performance, the other for storage!). 300$ 2x128GB SSD OR (weird) just one 256GB SSD for the same 300$.

I mean even through that it seems like you can get a deal, maybe even ordering one with 2 HDD's and just selling one.

Speed: 320GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) with Free Fall Sensor [Included in Price]
Speed: 250GB 7200rpm SATA Hard Drive Free Fall Sensor [subtract $50]
    RAID Protection: 640GB (2x320GB) 5400RPM add $0
    RAID Protection: 250GB (2x250GB) 5400RPM [subtract $25]
High Performance: 128GB Solid State Drive [add $100 or $3/month1]
RAID High Performance 256GB (2x128GB) Solid State Drive [add $300 or $9/month1]
Reliability: 128GB Solid State Drive plus 250GB SATA HD (7200RPM w/ FFS) [add $125 or $4/month1]
Speed: 500GB SATA Hard Drive (7200RPM) with Free Fall Sensor [add $25 or $1/month1]
Speed and Size Really Do Matter
Ultra Performance: 256GB Solid State Drive [add $300 or $9/month1]

E8435 is a desktop cpu, this laptop only take mobile core 2. E.g:

    T8300
    T9300
    T9500
    X9000

Dell only offered WUXGA screen on M1730, its an awesome screen with remarkable contrast ratio. If you find text too small though, you can turn up the DPI setting in OS to make font look bigger.

Well, he can change it, but of course, he has to buy a 17-inch screen (16 by 10) with the 1440x900 resolution and then just replace it. But why would someone prefer a lower resolution screen especially on a 17-inch? :D

OOOOOOO dude that is the worst comment ever

    OK WoW is quite large

the 1730 does not work well with WoW/ aratard/ due to WoW lack of optimization for SLI ;)

and they are discounting it due to the new AW laptop being released in 18 days(dell is not fully merged and backing AW with money). They did not want 2 laptops competeing so they are getting rid of one( the older less powerful one)

    please get your facts straight

    thank you

    will

The m1730 comes with 3 different displays Sharp, Samsung and LG. The one you're taking about is the LG. I kinda like it for some reason. The colors pop out and look very nice, but yeah, some colors might not be too accurate.

    I had a 17" at 1920x1200 and I prefer 1680x1050. But given the choice between 1920x1200 and 1440x900, I'd choose 1440x900.

I've called out Moo in the past for making claims without much foundation, but I don't see anything wrong with what he said, since it's true.
You don't have to have owned an M1730 or have played WoW to know that WoW is not SLI optimized, and it does seem that Dell is about to be pushing a new high end gamer, which explains the liquidation. "WoW not catching on" is definitely not a reason for this laptop being sold at such a low price...

You guys can list all of the negatives for this computer all day long. And they are all good cases. BUT those are true for a $3000 computer. For $1K you can not get anything better. not even for $1.5K. Build quality and power is topnotch. Support and warranty is also top notch.

The weight is around 11 pounds. I am not sure if you can get extra battery usage if you disable one GPU. I know you can squeeze 1 hour and 15 minutes of web browsing when running in Power Saver mode and low LCD brightness. Remember, this laptop isn't made to be used on battery. :)

He means disabling it from the device manager which I know other m1730 owners do, but I am not sure if they get extra battery usage.
