    HOT!!! RAM Deals
    Updated 2007-09-10

Hey all you folks out there that are hungry for more RAM,
here are some HOT HOT HOT deals.

Note 1a: Most of the current notebooks (with mobile Intel 945 chipsets) would only be able to see total: 3gigs [at low level, which would not matter which OS you choose]. Newer notebooks [such as the Santa Rosa, mobile Intel 965 chipsets] should see the 4 gigs fine [as long as you are using Vista and/or 64-bit OS].

Note 1b: All Santa Rosa [w/ mobile Intel 965 chipset] notebooks WILL NOT take advantage of DDR2-800.... it will just be underclocked to 667. So do not waste your money, just get DDR2-667. Only a few notebooks [w/ desktop Core 2 Duo's (Conroe)] at the moment can take advantage of the DDR2-800 memory. Thats it.

Note 2: When you purchase any memory (regardless of brand), you should always do a burn-in or a memory test to make sure that there are no errors. I recommend to use MemTest86+, its very simple to make a bootable CD from the ISO and let it auto-boot (the rest is automated). Read MemTest86+ Guide here. In the unlikelihood of having errors, you should swap it for a new one as soon as possible. Don't worry it happens more often than people realize. :)

:D Simple Guide for Installing Notebook Memory :D

    Rule of thumb for memory:
    - Brand is not important
    - Most RAM has the same memory chip manufacturers (Micron, Samsung, etc.)
    - Make sure it has lifetime warranty (which most do)
    - Has no instabilities or errors (which should be checked when testing the unit)
    - DO NOT worry about dual channel, the technology has gone and pretty much past. Dual channel nowadays barely gives any performance increase (2-3%) for current systems.

    :GEEK: DDR2 PC2-5300 vs. DDR2 PC2-5400 :GEEK:
    - PC2-5300 and 5400 are [technically] all the same modules and run with the same speed but different manufacturers like to label their product bit differently. 667 x 8 = 5336 so what is the correct answer in your opinion; 5300 or 5400? Marketing is marketing and because of that you should always make sure you know what you are buying.
    - However, Corsair said that the reason why they use the PC2-5400 markings in their modules is that they use 675 MHz clock speed to test the modules. This means that the modules marked with 5400 have actually passed the test, thus justifying this higher rating.
    - and from Note 1b (from above): Santa Rosa platform notebook will still only use up to 667.

Good post those are some very good deals. The 1GB kit isn't that good of a deal though. A few days ago it was $35 shipped for 1GB of 667Mhz. But the other two deals are excellent! It is amazing to see how much RAM is dropping! A little while ago 4GB's 2x2GB sticks would set you back $1500! If I had a notebook right now, I'd grab the 4GB kit!

I guess your right about the 1 gig stick deal.

But the rest are pretty hot.

I bought my DDR400 2gig (2x1gig) Kingston SO-DIMM set last year for around $180... ouch.

That's so cheap for 4GBs! I can only imagine how Oblivion and (upcoming) Assassin's Creed would love 4GBs...

Nice, recently upgraded from 1gb to 2gb as well, the market prices for the sodimms are dropping pretty fast. I bought a 1gb stick for $70 CDN 3 weeks ago, and another for $60 last week.

Thats all contingent that you have all the proper hardware and software to even have the full 4 gigs to work:
    - Need a chipset that can see full 4 gigs (current mobile Intel 945 only sees up to 3 gigs)
    - Need Windows Vista or other 64-bit OS
    - The game has to be compatible with that OS

But having 4 gigs would mainly come with bragging rights i guess. :)

WOW! Do they sell the 2GB sticks individually? I desperately need more RAM for my iMac, and I missed out on the Crucial deal at newegg. I don't need 4GB at all, and I don't want to spend $260 for it either, but a 2GB for $130 is pretty easily justified.

I just added the best deal for a 2GB DDR2 SO-DIMM... thats also from a highly recommended vendor. :)

    I know. :)
I was just making sure that those that want to purchase this are aware of the requirements to fully utilize 4gigs of RAM. :D

I'm probably going to purchase 4GB if/when I upgrade to Vista again...granted that will not be until SP1 is released...but wow!

I was going to wait for 4GB to hit $400 before I even considered it, so $260 is incredible for me. I'm just going to wait a hair longer...

Can you imagine that Dell charges 200 something dollars to upgrade to 2GB of ram when 4GB of ram on its own is about that price?

I waited for 9 months for ram prices to drop, then purchased 2x1GB for $130 :( a couple months back
I even posted a thread asking for expected ETA for 2GB sodimms to drop below $200, and estimate was 1+ year
    :(

Its not the brand that matters its the parts they use also known as the "IC's"

Those use Micron so thats about the best you can get.

A more expensive brand just gets you a diffrent name on the outside of the IC's ^^ somtimes a better warrenty or higher testing standards. But for a notebook since you wont overclock them probably testing stanards are not a concern.

Im hesitant to get 2x2gb I dont think there will be much if any advantage to 4gb in a notebook unless its ultra ultra high end (like SLI type deal)

In a desktop with vista 4gb has a good gain about 6% better performance in games, but on a notebook you wont be anywhere near the processing power and thus lower settings, and thus less ram used.

Plus I have a feeling some people will have issues getting 2gb sticks to post on some systems.

Gophn, the $249.99 4GB Patriot kit:
    http://shop3.outpost.com/product/5247587
. . . is backordered with no estimated ship date. I actually ordered that kit last week but cancelled when they told me that they did not know when they were getting another shipment.

Also, if you want 4GB of RAM, you're much better off with two of the Super-Talent modules from eWiz.com.
    http://www.ewiz.com/detail.php?p=T6...6eb3a4e3238e0dd8570621fce19aafa7d9fa4e57e084b
    I just bought two of them for $180 + $9.59 shipping = $189.59.

Fry's 2x1GB Kingston has sold out. I placed my order in a few days ago and I received an e-mail saying they are on back order. I doubt you will still get the rebate since the order won't actually be placed until they restock.
