 Need Help very desperately. I just clean installed windows xp pro, but can't seem to get the video card detected. Has anyone else had this problem too, where the default video adaptor is a "VgaSave" and not the ATI Radeon Express 200M?

I just talked to Westinghouse the other day, they said they changed the policy so upgrading the memory no longer void warranty! Yee Haa!

Just to answer a few questions about the memory upgrade. All you have to do is take off the large plastic cover from the bottom and make sure the pc is off. You will see a white slot that is open to the left of the processor. Take your memory and angle it up with it in the slot and slide it in and make sure it locks. Turn on the laptop and nothing will need to be changed in the bios. I will let ya know once i get my core duo

To answer the cpu question. You have to remove the whole fan assembly and unplug it. Then you have to unlock the CPU and pull it out. Make sure to use a static mat if you plan to reuse or sell it. Make sure when plugging in the new cpu to use thermal paste on the back where it was before and lock it in. Then reinstall the fan and plug it back in. I am not sure if the bios needs changed but maybe.

Is the RAM 200-pin or 240-pin? I think the 240-pin is for desktop. But it seems 200-pin is rather rare.

I don't think the DVD drive in the laptop is very high-quality. It's given me a ot of issues, but I may be the minority.

Thanks to other posters for the information on upgrading memory! I'm going to grab a 1gb stick and upgrade when my tax return come through next month, and I'm really looking forward to the performance increase.

It is interesting to me that the motherboard supports a Core 2 Duo...or is it just Core Duo? If anyone can be a little more specific about what the motherboard supports so I don't pick up the wrong processor, it would be MUCH appreciated. Thanks again!

You are correct it supports a core 2 duo but you will definatly pay for it. I am planning on using a core duo. Make sure it is socket M and the Yonah type.

What is the specs for this NB-14w2 motherboard? Where can I find out more? How did you know a Core2Duo works? Did the Core2Duo generate more heats than the fan can handle?

That's a good question. It seems like the current processor generates more than the fan can handle. Then again, this is my first laptop, so it's hard to tell how hot is too hot.

Is there any software to get the DVD burner to record. It would be nice to find one that is not too expensive.

I think I need the same software on my Gateway desktop to get it to recored as well.
Overall I am happy with this laptop.
    Thanks Pat

    Model NB-14w2

I am looking for anyone in the Atlanta/Birmingham/Chattanooga area that I can meet up with and be able to use your charged battery in my laptop for a few minutes, just long enough to be able to save my pictures onto a memory card.

My family went on vacation last week and I was downloading my digital pictures onto the laptop to free up space on my camera memory card and also for emailing pictures to family.

On the second to the last day of vacation, the charger port plug in pin thingy broke and I was no longer able to charge the battery or power the laptop up at all.

Westinghouse can't (or won't) send me a charged battery so I can save my files before sending it in for repair.
A new battery won't help because I have no way of charging it.
They can't promise they'll be able to save my pictures for me.
If it's opened and the hard drive pulled out to get the pictures, then the warranty is voided and I won't be able to get it fixed.

So the only option I'm left with is trying to find someone with the same laptop who would be good enough to meet with me and let me borrow their battery for a few minutes, to power my laptop up just long enough to be able to save my pictures.

If anyone can help, I would very much appreciate it.

Finding good burning software depends on exactly what you are trying to burn- most people tend to just get software for free through torrents, though. Can't really help you there. Google is your friend.

If you go back a few pages they show it under the Keyboard. Just click on the link or whatever. I think you just remove the screw on the bottom and the keyboard comes out.

I don't know if it needs to be gently pried out though. I just bought 2 gigs DDR2 667 PC2-5300 ram to install. I will be giving it a shot this weekend.

    Any and all tips Welcome!

I don't think so. I have not seen it at Tiger recently.

I replaced the both rams, one under the bottom and one under the keyboard.
I had a friend at work help who has worked on a few laptops help with the under the keyboard ram. I removed the screw underneath that says KB. Then you depress the tabs near the top of the keyboard then tip out the keboard.

Watch the ribbon connector. I had him hold the keboard while I replaced the memory. I have not tested it yet. But It seemed to boot up pretty fast. I installed 2 gigs.

    Hi Synthman,

Thanks for the tips. I wonder if you can elaborate more on "touched the tabs towards the back of the keyboard". Is it possible to take a photo on the tab? Thanks!

No pics but, look at the top of the keyboard. You will see tab at (F1 & F2) a tab at F6 as well as F10 and at Pause Break. Four tabs total.
Get something skinney and press the tabs towards the screen. They will push back and stay there.

The gently pry up the keyboard at the back. There is a ribben connector at the front middle for keyboard data, be careful . Memory is right there. Keyboard goes in front first then back last. Don't forget to remove KB screw on the bottom before removing keyboard.

I still have decide exactly how much quicker it is. I will give an update.

epr1977, the laptop comes with the XP Home CD as well as a DRIVER CD. After loading XP, you need to run the DRIVER CD.

    Hello,
I've found one source for the battery at the following link....
    http://www.shopbattery.net/wawenbnbseli.html
    I hope it's compatible!
I bought my nb-14w2 from tiger direct at the initial offering online,
I've added 1 gig of ram and the machine flys. The only problem i've had was the green people on streaming video and this is easily solved updating to the latest windows media player. I should have purchased 2. Hell of a buy for 399 u.s. dollars. Good luck with your battery search.
