That is also good to know. It's not like I'll be editing/composing for an Oscar film or anything, lol. Now I wonder if the nvidia card is even necessary. Since they are overheating, and overclocking may contribute that, is it worth the extra $300? Without overclocking, it may not be much better than the integrated card. How do games play on that one? Anyone have some stats on that? Opinions?

Well, after checking, I can't beat the price by much anyway. They have an up to $750 off going on now, but by the time other deals are subtracted, it works out about the same. Shipping date is still going into next month, too.

News update on the i9400 w/ Radeon X1800 in it.

I recieved a call from the head of the notebook sales division today and my troubles have been brought to a close. The manager who made me the deal didn't realize that installing an X1800 into the laptop would require significant changes to the i9400's bios. As well, ATI has not yet made the Mobility X1800 avaliable to Dell though they may well do so in the future. As a result Dell is cancelling my order and have given me the wonderful consolation prize of allowing me to get the i9400 with the X1400 at the origional price i paid for it which was 100 dollars less than the current price.

Yay dell... I hope they burn for their sins...

    Vox

edit: Does anyone know where it would be possible to buy the Geforce go 7800 and whether you could just swap the X1400 out for the geforce? I might just do an after-market install since the bios supports the stupid thing.

Awesome specs with an average video card...

Thanks for the update Vox, and please let us know how you get on with your after-market install.

Is anyone else getting problems with the 9400 during installs?

I first noticed it when I first got it and tried to install WoW, it kept stopping the install after the first disk, it would ask for disk 2 and stop.

In the end I removed the USB wireless adapter for my mouse, changed install location and it worked but it took me in total over 2 hours and many tries to get it installed.

I have also noticed that games take an AGE to install, when I did get WoW to install it took the best part of 30 minutes to be done. I tried to install Monkey Island 4 again a couple of days ago and it did the same thing, very very slow at installing and ****ped out after disk 1. I didnt bother to remove the mouse and reboot as at this point I couldnt be bothered and ended up playing WoW.

I managed to install RCT3 on it with both expansions no problems and F.E.A.R installed fine too.

I have had problems with WoW, Monkey4 and most recently Half-life 2 died part way through the install but this may be something else as it is one DVD.

    Any Idea's anyone?

9400 and Nvidia Geforce Go 7800 shortage.

hope to get my 9400 before the end of next week.
Seems like the Geforce Go 7800 shortage has stung dell abit.

Managed to get an upgrade from a 1 year collect and return warranty to a 3 year NBD accidental cover/complete care or the choice of a M170 XPS for the same price as the 9400.

system cost just over €3100 with 1 year warranty with the highest spec available. I had asked questions regarding the X1400 to determine if the card was motherboard integrated and it also shares 128MB of system memory.
Dell might not sell the Geforce 7800 card at a later date and i will have to get it from another source (EBAY) but at least i can have the system in a week as opposed to the 2+ month lead in waiting for the part from dell.

    can't wait.

Yes, most folk seem to be sourcing them from ebay but it is a viable upgrade option.

The only video that cannot be upgraded is if you purchase the 9400 with integrated graphics.

Talk is there may be a 7900 soon, so you can at least keep your options open in the meantime.

    Regards,

    Dougie.

guys does anyone else have this problem...

I always close the lid of my laptop so it goes into standby before I go out, but sometimes when I come home, I find that the computer has gone out of standby and has turned on by itself (including the fans) even though the lid is shut. This is totally random and does not happen all of the time. I have also double checked my power settings and confirmed that the laptop is set to "standby" upon closing the lid.

Secondly, sometimes when I open the lid of my computer, it doesnt go out of standby. It technically does, (the power button light stays constant), but the monitor stays black no matter what I do, so I am forced to close and re-open the lid. Any ideas why it is doing this?

I encountered the same problem installing WoW. :(

Ultimately, I got it to work somehow. I installed it while I was working on my other laptop. The only difference was that I let it sit for quite a while when it asked for the next CD. Then, when I installed the next CD I hit OK almost immediately. This seemed to work, though I think this is more to do with the planet's alignment than the actual procedure I used... ;)

for all you quake 4 players (software that can actually damage hardware):

    Quake 4 Patch Recall
FYI, the Quake 4 1.1 patch that was released yesterday has been recalled. According to id Software, there is an apparent problem with widescreen functionality that may harm a user's monitor.

In case you missed it, id Software has recalled the Quake 4 1.1 patch as "There is a problem with the widescreen functionality that may harm a user's monitor". If you have the patch installed it is recommended that you neither enable or disable the widescreen support. An updated patch is expected soon. In the meantime we do have the updated SDK on FileShack.

i was reading a link about one person's horrible experience with Dell (which many of us can relate to). I didn't note the link so i can't provide the source.

However, the main thing to note was that Dell said there was a shortage of go7800's. This is why you have the ati x1400 now.

It is not, as suggested on this thread, because of overheating issues. So we can all relax as the summer approaches :)

Finally!!!! About a month of waiting, and I finally got my E1705. First impressions are mixed, Dell should definitely fire the designer, it looks like more a fridge than a laptop, and suits perfect in my kitchen!!!! :) Well, one could argue that the important thing is performance. OK, but from the first day it runs **** SLOW!!!!!! The processor usage shown is awfull, it jumps to 30-40% from nothing, just a bare desktop. Then I uninstalled much of Dell's **** it had, then changed Norton I Security for McAffe, the performance improved, but still not the one you could expect from such a powerful machine. I am talking about simple office tasks and windows opening. I tried to run some games, and the lap did it quite OK, though the game I used (Gothic II) consume mainly RAM and V-Cart. I run all the Dell Diagnostics tests and apparently all the hardware components are OK. Maybe it is the loisy XP MediaCenter? In all cases I plan to format and reinstall all the programs from scratch. Could someone tell me what the problem might be?

    Thanks a lot.

Dont worry, I had the same exact problems as you...the laptop is actually pretty bad when you first turn it on - sluggish, freezes etc - but after a swift reformat, the thing runs like an absolute dream. Its fast...trust me. Once you reformat you will know what I mean. So dont worry about the speed right now cuz that will improve GREATLY after you reformat.

Yep no problem :) I (like you) was very dissapointed when I first recieved it. But as long as you do the reformat correctly, you should be fine. Just make sure you install all of the drivers correctly and there should be no problems. Another friend of mine bought an i9400 the other day...when he first turned it on he absolutely hated it, and considered giving it back. But after I told him to reformat, he was in love with it.

After owning a 9400 for a month now my recommendation would be for people NOT to buy one. I may be the exception however my machine is littered with faults.

    1. Laptop runs too hot, if I wanted to burn my lap, a box of matches would have been cheaper.

    2. The media centre button does not work, I have not reformatted.

    3. There is an envelope of light emitting from the bottom of the screen

    4. The surround strip on the left hand side is loose.

    5. The laptop will not work in properly in dual mode.

    6. When I plug a device into a usb port its says it is not a usb 2 port, when it should be.

    7. Battery life is worse than any other laptop I have owned.

In hindsight aother bad product from a bad company, eventually I will learn.

    Pete

got my refurbished 9400 yesterday. so far i'm really loving it. I didn't reformat although i did remove a lot of dell's junk.

kinda pissed though because i just found a problem with the laptop. the #8 key doesn't work too well. I have to hold down the key a long ass time before anything comes out...i guess I gotta send it back or something, but that's so annoying!!!! what do you guys think?

    Hi all,

I'm from Belgium and I have my laptop since a month now.
Reading the forum i've come to the conclusion that reformatting my 9400 would gain some extra performance.
I have a original WinXP cd, but my question is which drivers do I have to download on the DEll site to get my system back up again ? (I mean drivers that are not on the winXP cd).

    Thx for your replies :)

I got a map in my c-root called 'Drivers'.
If I burn these on a cd-rom can I use this cd to install all my drivers after reinstalling windows ?

    drivers - audio
    modem
    network
    printer
    system
    video

within each off these maps I got a map with onboard an addon.

The reason I want to reinstall because I'm getting these nasty blue screens with a sysdump (usbhub.sys)

Did you guys reinstall with a fresh copy of XP or use the Dell reinstallation CD (I know is sounds stupid to ask but hey, you might have).

Maybe it will resolve my problem with installs taking an age.

The Dell "restore" disc will install all of the bloatware. If you get the copy of Windows from Dell, it is a clean install.

w00t! I got a call from Dell to say that the engineering hold on the Nvidia 7800 has been released and I should receive my laptop before next Friday! :)

So if you're laptop is delayed because of the fault with the gfx card then maybe the end is in site :)

Is it true, that when you always use your laptop with external power plugged in, your battery life declines ? (in the long term)

The heat from the laptop can cause the battery life to decline. When not using the battery it is advisable to charge it to 40% then leave it in a cool place.

Ok, I got my HDD formatted and Windows XP reinstalled. Now it runs much better, though I did not run any serious tests to know what the real speed is.

Some curious things during the installation, as I have no PC restore CD from Dell, though I got copy from original C:/Drivers. So Windows installed standard motherboard drivers instead and some other drivers from my copy. Then I got the motherboard driver from Dell's site (intel chipset) and after installing it, the machine became slower (????!!!!). Is that possible? (I didnt run any test though, its just a windows opening impression). I restored the system to standard drivers and installed the rest (touchpad, V-card, etc).

Another thing, I have no Dell driver for my LCD screen, it is just a Default Monitor with windows driver, some strange thing I noted after installation, when the screen goes off during switching off, or just when closing some programs, a kind of instantaneous "steamy" wave goes on screen and disappears, just like a steamy glass when gots hot and steam evaporates. No waves when the screen is running. This really troubles me as there were no such kind of things before the reinstall. Could it be caused by not having the original Dell driver for LCD screen. I dont remember if there were any befor the reinstall, and the dell's site shows some 14 drivers for different screen, most of them external monitor's.......

And the last thing, total space I got on my HDD is just 55 GB, when it is a 60Gb Hitachi 7200 rpm, and it does not show any hidden partition, even when booted from Windows XP install CD. How this can be? I did some partition merging with Symantec Partition Magic after format, but the total space never exceeded 55 GB??????????

I guessed I messed up a bit with the reinstall without a restore disc, I can not go back using Dell's PC restore as it seems that partition where it was is lost.... Could some just give me a tip what is happening?

    Thanks a lot!

When the manufacturer says that the disk is 60GB, they mean as in 1 GB = 1,000,000 bytes. Your computer thinks that 1 GB is 1024x1024 bytes, which is a little more than a million. So therefore you will lose a bit of space because of the math.

In addition, the Dell Media Direct partition is "hidden and non-accessable", which means you probably won't be able to see it. So there would account for more space.

I just bought a Dell Inspiron 9400 -- definitely my last Dell purchase -- and I'm having a standby issue also. I've literally had the computer for less than 24 hours. When it goes into standby mode, it won't come out by convention means -- that is, hitting a key or moving the mouse. If I hit the power button or the MediaDirect button, however, it will come out of standby.

Dell wants to charge me $99 to resolve this issue. I don't really mind the way it's working -- I'm just worried that it might be symptomatic of bigger problems.

Any ideas how to correct this, short of doing a PC Restore?

    Thanks.

Then I ran into the video card delay problem like everyone else. Well I finally thought a shipped status was near! I was closely watching this order as I couldn't wait to get my hands on this beast of a laptop. I checked the status this morning and it still said it was in boxing like last night. I thought, man how long does it take to put it in a friggin box??? So I called this morning and the the lady informed me that it was still in testing and said to check back later. Around lunch time I checked again the the DARN order had been CANCELLED!!! WHO WHAT WHEN!!! I called my rep and well he didn't understand either, so he said he would investigate and then call me back. He never called me back so I called him at 5pm. He informed me that due to the video delay problem and the fact that they were not going to get any more GeForce 7800 Go video cards in, that the system cancelled my order. I don't know about everyone else nor can I speak for them, but I have been having more and more issues with Dell over all regarding orders and support. Has anyone else noticed this. I am at the point of switching to another vendor to purchase pcs. What say you?

one step ahead of you mate, i cancelled the same order as yours about 3 weeks ago, and they said the refund would be in the mail within 2 weeks, i called them last friday to see where it was, and they said that they hadnt even sent the cheque yet... Argg!!!!!!!! I went off at them and the lady i was speaking to couldnt take me anymore and said she had to get one of her supervisors. So after speaking to her she said that my cheque would be in the mail on monday... Monday comes and guess what not there, called, abused again, would be there tues due to mail delay or some **** dell manages to pull out of the a**. Tues comes, guess what... no cheque, so i call dell abuse them and finally after many threats to take them to consumer affairs, i got onto the CEO of australia, apparently he didnt know anything about my case and that it shouldnt have happened. So he personally sent the cheque be express mail to get there on wednesday morning, and if it wasnt there by then, that he would personally deliver the cheque to me... That made me happy, and now i got my cheque this morning after a debacle of over 7 weeks. Never gonna deal with dell again, and am for sure gonna tell everyone that i know wants to deal with dell, to DEFINATELY NOT DEAL WITH DELL!

thanks for listening to my story, what do you all think?

    cheers

That's not a 'problem' that's the way it was designed. All dell laptops are like that.
Definitely don't spend $99 to resolve the issue. Nothing will happen.

EDIT: And for the record, I have gotten every one of my 3 dell computers (1 laptop, 2 desktops) without any problems. The only issue (out of the box) that I've had was that my first Dell desktop's CD drives were not connected.

My order was cancelled once because the credit card company was suspicious the card had been stolen (Dell had nothing to do with it). After confirming with the bank that I actually did place the order, I reordered (fixing mistakes made in the original order, too) and got exactly the computer I wanted.

My 9300 laptop shipped a couple days after I ordered it and arrived within a week. Whenever I asked for a CD (with the pre-installed software), I was promptly sent it, and it arrived the next morning. Unfortunately, I had to ask them multiple times because I needed 5 CDs (and they kept forgetting things). Still, it took only 3 days to get everything.

As for bigtwist, there's no acceptable reason why you should be abusing the employees. If they say it will be in the mail by monday and it isn't in your mailbox on monday, you should wait, because 'in the mail' is NOT the same thing as 'in your hands'.
