Just wanted to make sure, but you did plug it into the USB-C port closer to you (since only one port is thunderbolt 3)? I don't believe the non-thunderbolt 3 usb-c port supports two monitors but I may be wrong.

Based on my very limited testing, you can actually get a steady 26-30 fps in Dota 2 on max settings with native resolution (3000 x 2000). If you want a steady 60 fps you are looking at medium settings at native resolution.

Can you check 1080p low-med fps? It's not warping even in big fights?
Really wondering if I should go for 9570 but matebook's just so much better with 3:2 and portability so would like it. Dota is big criteria tho

    Hello,

I am new to this forum, so please forgive me if I am misposting or committing some other error.

I am considering the i7/512K SSD unit. I put my hands on one today at the MS Store, and it looks, feels, and performs beautifully.

I have a massive 4K 60HZ display, and I want to be sure that I will be able to get the full 4K resolution from the MateBook. Has anyone hooked up to a similar display? If so, what were the results.

    Thanks All,
    John

    Thanks - yes I did.

With more futzing around, I got two working by connecting one to the StarTech adapter connected to the Thunderbolt port using DisplayPort, and a second connected to the included MateDock adapter in the USB-C port using HDMI. However, this is far from ideal.

I tried contacting Huawei, but I'm pretty sure I was connected to a Bot, which offered no helpful info.

As long as Your external display supports 4K@60Hz via HDMI (it should have HDMI 2.0 or higher input, not all of them have; if it is a monitor, possibility is it can achieve 4k@60Hz only using DisplayPort 1.2) you can connect MateBook with HDMI 2.0 cable using the included dongle.

Thanks for the help. May I ask if you have connected your Matebook to a similar display, and if so, did it perform as expected? I’m looking for feedback from folks who have actually tried it, so I can be confident in my purchasing decision.

MateBookers: As a prospective customer, I would love to hear any feedback on Huawei Customer Service. I plan to purchase through the Microsoft Store. The “bot” comment above as me concerned a little.

So, two questions really: (1) How have your experiences been with Huawei Customer Service, and (2) If you purchased via MS Store, how has their support and service been?

    Thanks,
    John

I did the same and now have no issues with my new unit.

    What's the trackpad rattle fix?

Ok, so I embarrassed to say that I believe I have found the answer to my question above. It was right on the Huawei site. Here is the link: https://consumer.huawei.com/us/tablets/matebook-x-pro/

    Here is the relavent content:

“HUAWEI MateBook X Pro has a 3.5 mm stereo headset jack, a USB-A port, two USB-C ports including one supports Thunderbolt™ 3 which allows you to connect with 4K display and external graphics card.”

The English is a bit flawed, in that it convey’s that you can “connect with 4K display and external graphics card.” I’m not sure what it means to “connect to an external graphics card,” as that would be really strange, no?

    Thanks all!

These are the questions i want to know about too. I was going to order the i7 model a couple of weeks ago until i looked up Huawei service and saw that all their so called service centers in the US were really just tiny private phone repair shops, if they even exist. Worse yet, i then called Huawei and was told that they have one actual service center in the US in Texas, BUT then he told me they only guarantee the i5 model because the i7 model "is not officially sold in the US" and if my i7 breaks under warranty i could send it to Europe for repair at my expense! So then i cancelled my order.

Now i am thinking of getting the i7 model again because it still looks great. What I'm thinking of doing now is getting it along with Microsoft's two year Performance Guard guarantee ($150 includes accidental damage). The MS salesman on the phone said if i buy that, MS will directly cover the warranty and I'd give it to MS to repair.

The trouble is every MS salesman i speak to on the phone seems to say something different. So the question is, is that true, will MS take care of any possible warranty problems with the i7, and two, how is MS warranty service for a non MS product they sell?

The i7 model is in stock now.

Thanks for all the great information. After doing my homework about TB3 ports and support for 4K 60Hz external displays (see my other postings), and after putting my hands on an MBXP i7 at the MS Store, I pulled the trigger today.

Then I read your posting, and realized that I want the PGG you mentioned above. But alas, you cannot purchase the PGG separately from the MBXP, so I ended up cancelling my order, and re-ordering with PGG.

The MS Store price is $1499. The PGG is $129 (discounted from $149), so mine was not included like yours was. Not a big deal though. I think the $129 is worth it.

Yes, I have some of the same concerns that you do. I think the PGG “fine print” is on-line someplace, so that’s my next “adventure.”

Oh, with regard to being “in stock.” The MS Store says “Will ship by August 7.” That’s not what I call in stock. May I ask where/how you purchased yours? I’m actually reluctant to ask that question, as I just flashed on me cancelling my order, again, and reordering! :)

    Best!

Jliv - i have not yet purchased it. I'm still undecided. Here is a tip to save $150. They offer a military discount so i asked for it and the saleseman said no problem. That reduced the price to 1,350. He asked for no proof. Good to know that the pgg must be purchased at the same time as the computer. Let me know if you see anything interesting in the fine print. Basic rule: the finer the print the more important it is! I would still like to hear from someone who has had actually dealings in this matter. Neither ms nor huawei's service sector has inspired a lot of confidence in me so far.

Thunderbolt 3 allows you to connect to an eGPU (External GPU) like the Razer Core. Its a device that allows you to hook up a desktop grade graphics to the laptop and run games through it rather than use the graphics card on your laptop. You won't get the full performance of the desktop GPU due to bandwidth limitations but it significantly improves your graphics performance. I used to hook up the HP Spectre x360 with a Razer Core + AMD RX480 and play Witcher 3 on near max settings at 60fps.

Okay, now I’m even more embarrassed. Putting my bruised ego aside for a moment, allow me to say “that’s fricking awesome! Can you use an eGPU to drive multiple 4K displays of of the MBXP?

Nothing to be embarrassed about. Its a pretty niche and expensive setup. I've never personally driven multiple 4K displays so I can't say for sure, but I also don't see why not considering its a desktop grade graphic card driving the displays.

Heads up: The Microsoft Store just dropped the price of the Huawei Matebook X Pro i7 version to $1199.99 (Sold out currently)

Update: Deal is dead, back up to regular price

I just received notice from MS that my unit has shipped, and is scheduled to arrive tomorrow (Wednesday) by 8:00pm. I wanted to share this as the “Ships By” information on the MS Store page said 8/7/18 when I purchased this unit on 7/13/18 (and it still does as of this writing). So we are looking at 5 days from purchase to arrival, and not 25 days, as I had expected.

I’ll report back once the unit arrives on my initial impressions, and of course how it works with a 4K 60Hz 45 inch display.

I grabbed an Aorus 1080 Gaming Box. After firmware and driver updates, this was my first result on an external monitor. The CPU portion is predictably bad, but it seems to be throttling? Although, not as a result of thermals.

And then, once I disabled the MX150 in Device Manager...
Note that the Validation Warning states "Graphics Card is not Recognized". I didn't get that with the MX150 enabled

I think they deliberately make the new model's name easy to confuse with the old model, and they're certainly not the only ones doing that. I was just reading the Amazon reviews of last years model sorted by most recent first. Some people just bought last years model. I bet they were fooled into thinking they bought the newest model they were hearing about!

I ordered without, then read the post on this forum (might have been yours) suggesting as much. So I had to cancel and reorder.

The MS PerformanceGuard Protection Plan for Laptops looks pretty comprehensive.

    $49 deductible.

Hardware covered for 2 years against defects, etc.

Accidental Damage: Drops, spills, etc. there is a clause on this part about “eligible laptops.” So I’m not sure if this one is eligible.

Otherwise, it looks well above average in terms of coverage, for this price. $129

I got the i5 version from Amazon. It randomly gets hot, the battery life is all over the place, and lately I've been getting these "Boot Device" fail error messages randomly. I went into BIOS and disabled the "Secure Boot" option. Any other suggestions? Besides the other minor problems I've mentioned, it's a really good laptop and I don't want to have to return it.

MBXP7 arrived. All good so far, except rattly trackpad. I hooked up the 45” 4K LG display, but had to use HDMI via included “dock” dongle. Full 4K resolution is happening!

It seems that the standard Apple USB-C cable is not Thunderbolt 3 capable. At least that’s my theory. Can anyone confirm. I will probably buy said TB3 cable so I can use the USB-C port on my display. That said, I don’t think it offers anything over HDMI 4K, except I can bypass the dongle. Clear as mud?

    More as I learn more.

    Let us know here,
But who do you bring it to if you want to use any of that warranty coverage? If they tell you you need to bring it to Huawei you might be in trouble. And why shouldn't it be an "eligible" computer for the accidental damage coverage if you paid for it? That would be a nice trick if you bought accidental damage for your computer and then they told you, its not eligible. Some other computer Is eligible, though ha ha! Read the fine print.

    Just saw this on Reddit:

"The fine print of the MSFT store warranty says they're going to send the laptop out for repairs to a third party. They'll only replace the laptop if the same problem happens 3 times or if you accidentally damage it (after replacing it, the extended warranty is over). Seems like a weird deal"

Good points all. According to the fine print, I can see if my unit is eligible by examining my specific contract. I’m still not sure how to do this, but plan to find out.

You bring it to MS, either an MS Store or you can ship it in to a Service Center. We have an MS Store 15 minutes away, so that would be my first choice if and when anything happens.

To anyone wondering, Huawei technical support is terrible. I contacted them about using multiple external monitors, and got a reply in broken English saying that it supports three external monitors. I replied asking how to accomplish that. No response. After my third request, I got a canned response about how to connect a single external monitor using the MateDock.

Our CEO had asked me to evaluate this machine as a possible new corporate standard machine instead of the HP zBooks we currently use. No way I can recommend doing so:
    • Only a one year warranty with questionable method to get serviced. (vs 3 yr with on site service for HP)
    • Limited external connectivity
    • Included software utilities display menus in Chinese, not English, with no setting to change.
    • Poor technical support
Yes, it's a very cool machine. Beautiful display, light & sleek, etc. But not Enterprise class.

Installed a 2TB WD SSD inside, pretty easy to do, you don't have to remove the heatsink, just careful slide the old one out and new one in. Drivers are all on the matebook x pro site, except for the PC software checkup/driver update app. I downloaded the one from the original matebook x (not pro) and it works with the pro just fine.

another tip, I tested it with the Aorus Gamebox with a GTX 1080 as well as the razer core (new version) and a 1080 ti. the ti was not substantially faster to justify the price at all IMHO. And, the Aorus Box is maybe 1/6th the size, is very portable. my two cents.

Got the i7 version last weekend and despite everything is really good in this computer, the temperatures are horrible! You can cook an egg on the part above the keyboard even when the machine is idle, and don't think to use it in your couch on your legs, or you gonna burn. It's a shame for the asked price.

Day 3: First of all, I should state that I bought this MBXP for work. I am not a PC gamer, nor do I plan to watch a lot of movies on it.

My main working setup is at home, and I am using an 43" LG 4K IPS display: https://www.lg.com/us/monitors/lg-43UD79-B-4k-uhd-led-monitor

Note: Occasionally (every few hours) this display will go blank for a few seconds. No ideas what's causing that, but thought I should mention it anyway.

I tend to have anywhere from 6 to 10 applications open at any given time: Outlook, Office Suite, Skype, Slack, MS Edge, MS Mail, and a few MS App Store apps: FB, LinkedIn.. That's about it. If I run GoToMeeting and activate video in addition to the others listed above, the fan will definitely kick in. I used the Intel Extreme Tuning Utility to monitor CPU/Core, GPU and Memory during this the GTM session, and the CPU (aggregate) was around 20 - 35%. The GPU was around 17 - 30%, and memory was pretty stable at 40%. The temperature of the Core was 135 - 172 F. I still can't get used to Celsius, sorry. Once I ended the GTM session, things settled back down, and the fan stepped down and then turned off after about 5 minutes. I put my hand the top of the unit, and it was just a bit warm, but the bottom (center) was pretty hot.

In comparison to the MBP (i5) I had before, I would say this unit runs a bit hotter. But the fan is quieter than the MBP.

I have done some work with it as a laptop (disconnected from the external display) and it's a delight to type on. The screen is spectacular. Not only is the resolution and color depth amazing, but the 3:2 (or is it 4:3) format is so much better for work apps. Oh, and the touchscreen fully rocks! At first I had forgotten about it. It's very responsive, and makes navigation much easier than trackpad alone.

The one thing that annoys me a bit is the slightly lose trackpad. It jiggles or rattles just a bit. This is a common problem with these units. I'm undecided as to whether or not to bring it into the MS Store. Just seems like a hassle. That said, it would be really interesting to see how they handle something like this, given that I purchase their PerformancGuard plan.

the two lanes aren't that big a deal if gaming on external display directly from the egpu. but if you stick to the laptop display, you take about a 15% hit.

Heard great things about the speakers so I'm trying them out and they do sound good for their size. I'm curious about the speaker set up. I checked the sound settings and only see two speakers.
Could someone confirm by going to Control Panel > Sound > Configure
I was expecting to see 4 speakers but only see 2 (left, right).

    Hi Jliv.

I have been looking through this thread and didn't see your other post about dual external displays.

How do you get the Matebook X Pro to support dual external displays?

I want to hook up two WQHD 2560x1440 external displays at 60Hz.

    Hi MartinGale,

The mention of duel displays earlier in the thread was due to my ignorance about external graphics cards (eGPUs).

I am only using a single external display, but I see no reason why you couldn’t have a second display. That said, driving a second external display might tax the inbuilt graphics card pretty badly, so an eGPU might be required or at least recommended. Of course you did say you’re running duel WQHDs, so that might put less strain on the internal graphics than duel 4Ks, says the guy who didn’t know what an eGPU is. :)

Hopefully someone out there has tested duel external displays. Please let us know if you learn more.

What's the feeling of people who bought the i7 model so far? Are you happy you bought it, or unhappy, or have you taken advantage of the 30 day return and sent it back?

Can someone post screenshots of using apps like Outlook, Word, Photoshop, browsing Amazon, etc on the Matebook X Pro?

I'm curious to see how well the menus and fonts scale to 3000x2000 resolution. Wouldn't all of the fonts and icons look tiny on a screen of this resolution? I had heard that Windows 10 doesn't render menus well beyond 1920x1080p. I understand that the text size can be increased in the Control Panel, but how well does this really work? Then again, MacBooks have a special scaling that makes the Retina displays look normal.

Has anyone tried connecting a 1920x1080 monitor to the Matebook X Pro? Does everything scale properly, in terms of the fonts and menu sizes?
