Which 9600M GT driver did you use? If you're using bios 302, you should be able to use the one from the nVidia website.

You can get BIOS 1.20 here. I think you will need to flash in Windows 32-bit.

What version of Windows are you running? Windows 7 32-bit or 64-bit?

No worries. Anyway, I haven't tried flashing/installing the BIOS on Windows 64-bit, but I don't think it will work. Of course, it doesn't hurt to try.

Use your BenQ Recovery DVD and re-install Windows that came with the laptop. Flash the BIOS and then re-install Windows 7.

If you don't care about battery life you can still stay on BIOS 302.

By the way, why do you want switching back? Are you using the laptop on battery a lot?

Check CPU and GPU temperature using HWMonitor. It will turn the computer off automatically at 100C.

Is it overheating? For me, CPU max is 70C and GPU max is about 97C.

For me, left palm rest is also quite hot.

You really don't want the temperature to go over 100C. It will damage your PC.

You can try to use compressed air in (or blow hard into) the back vent if there is dust.

If you're desperate, you can try BIOS 1.15 which I've heard uses the fan more. (not tested on Windows 7)

yup..dust always cause the problem in benq s42..u need to clean it at least once a week to avoid ur laptop suddenly turn off because of overheat..plus, rite now i'm using one fan that point at my left palm and a zalman cooler..even it cost me a lot of money but the problem appear no more..

@namaiki i think we should change our laptop..it seems outdated..huhu..if u buy a new one, tell me and i will also get a new one ^_^

I was considering getting a Dell XPS 15 (L502X) with the awesome 1080p screen, but then I thought of my empty pockets. D:
The XPS 15 is probably a bit larger than the Joybook S42.

I was also looking at the latest Acer TimelineX series, but it's not out yet. http://forum.notebookreview.com/acer/553306-acer-timelinex-3830-4830-5830-t-g.html

    Other contenders: NP5160 (Clevo W150HN)

But at the moment, I don't think I will buy anything. I really want my next notebook to have a 1920xXXXX screen.

I have finished doing fresh install of Win7 64 bit. Bios is 1.20. I'm trying to install the vga driver 258.96 from nautis. I have disabled automatic driver installation from windows 7, because it keep installing the intel part driver with "Mobile Intel(R) 45 Express Chipset (Microsoft Corporation - WDDM 1.1)". Nautis mentioned that "Uninstall your existing graphics drivers when set to Speed/Performance/Nvidia and make sure you see both Video Devices in Device manager before installing". Because my Windows 7 is fresh install, i don't have any graphic driver at all so I can't set it to Speed/Performance. "Make sure you see both Video Devices in Device Manager before installing", does this mean both driver listed as Video Controller (VGA Compatible) in Other Devices branch within Device Manager or should I update both driver with Standard VGA Graphic-Adapter so that both appear in Display Adapter branch (though the NVIDIA 9600GT-based driver part always disabled each time I'm updating it) ?
And one more question, which one is the correct sequence to install the driver? Is it Install driver 258.96, run dseo13b, reboot, sign both sys files, reboot; or Install driver 258.96, run dseo13b, sign both sys files, then reboot ?

Pls Namaiki or anybody, I need some help here.

    Thanks btw,

Both as 'Standard VGA Graphics Adapter' should be good.

Install driver 258.96, reboot, run dseo13b, sign both sys files, then reboot.

If I recall correctly, the files to sign are called:
    c:\Windows\System32\drivers\igdkmd64.sys
    c:\Windows\System32\drivers\nvlddmkm.sys

Thanks a lot for your quick reply, Namaiki.

It's seems like I make serious mistakes though. I keep getting this error in the middle of installing 258.96 "NVidia Setup Error. Failed to install one of the core component which may affect driver functionality. The most recent driver that worked will now be restored". I think it's because I already install / uninstall the driver a couple of time before (though I have already run Driver Sweeper each time I failed). Maybe I had to re-format and installing a fresh copy of Windows 7 64bit and start installing 258.96 from beginning :(
Btw, is it important to install driver for Intel motherboard chipset (from BenQ site, version 9.1.0.1014) before installing vga driver?

    Thanks once more, Namaiki

    Yeah, it's working!!!! :)

The 263.08 driver is really working, though it's still need the reg fix "still_need.reg" to completely switch from performance mode to save mode and vice versa (without it I can only switch from performance mode to save mode, but when I want to switch back to performance mode, it's not working and only stuck with the window that show save power -> increase performance).

Thank you so much Namaiki, I really appreciate your help a lot :)

The 263.08 driver is really great, installed smoothly.
the only imperfection for me is after switching to power save mode, the "NVIDIA CONTROL PENAL" shortcut is still in the desktop context menu.
if that can be fixed, then this driver is perfect!
    anyone know how? thanks

flash the BIOS for xp, install windows xp, and use the official NVIDIA drivers would really improve performance? how much?
if it is significant, i'll do it, just wanna know if it is worth the trouble.
i'm currently playing red faction armageddon, and the FPS is really crappy...
i already overclock the GPU core to 650, GPU memory to 950, shader clock to 1400; and the 3dmark06 score went from 5800+ to 6700+.
anyway, i don't think S42 can handle BF3, no matter what.

BTW, I read from other sites, that someone overclocked the Shader clock to 1700 and got a 3dmark06 score more than 7100+. but whenever i try to overclock the shader clock to more than 1400, my system would crash to black screen during 3dmark06 test run, why is that?

Have you tried lowering texture settings? It might be because the 9600M GT in this computer only has 256MB of Video RAM.
Some newer Forceware drivers say that they improve performance in some games, like when they write:
"For Battlefield 3 we’ve improved performance by up to 11% since the release of the GeForce 285.38 beta drivers, have included several compatibility enhancements, a new and improved SLI profile, and a 3D Vision profile."

If you don't use the laptop on battery, you can try the XP BIOS. I haven't tried myself as it will half battery life. (~10W for Intel vs ~20W idle for the 9600M GT)

Some chips just don't overclock as well as others. Also, make sure that it's not overheating. (e.g above 85C or so)

The graphics cooling in my BenQ used to go up to 97C and I didn't even overclock.

what version of driver are you using, do you have the NVIDIA desktop context menu issue?

the 256m VRAM maybe the issue, but i set everything to low, except scene detail in red faction armageddon, no any improvement to FPS.
seting scene detail to low helps, but the graphic just deteriorated too much to be acceptable.

In the meantime, you can try that 263.08 driver if you want.
