I tested this and it's working fine, realy fine.
The support for the new hardware and yep it's working like a charm.

Almost a week on 8.04. There are a couple annoyances, rough edges that will probably be polished out in the next month, but this version of Ubuntu runs better and has more features than anything else I've tried on my Compal.
-
It seems that this version is for server or desktop only, not for laptop, am I correct?
-

The desktop i386 version is the one you want. It'll work on your laptop. I believe it offers a new feature that will allow you to install it from within windows. -
How will this OS work, will it be called instead of Vista at booting, how does it work?
-
1. Burn the .iso file as an image to a cd, restart your computer and Ubuntu will run off the cd. This way you can get some idea of what Ubuntu would look like on your computer without actually installing it. Note that it will run sluggishly because the entire thing is being run from a cd!
2. Decide how you want to install Ubuntu. Ubuntu can be installed in place of Vista or along side Vista on another partition. If you have no way of restoring Vista (no install cd that came with your computer) you probably want to install along side Vista. Ubuntu will allow you to partition the drive and set a system that allows you to boot either operating system on your computer.
3. This link will give you a better idea of what you're getting yourself into:

Thank you for the advice, I'm actually getting repaired another laptop and I'm planning to do the HDD partition plan.
-
Cool
Once you get up and running the ubuntu forums and the ubuntu guide are good places to go if you're having any particular difficulties. 8.04 is pretty smooth though. -
I have an annoying bug in FF3: how do I fix the humongous font size? Note it only affects what's is on the main frame not what is on the side bar... See screenie for what I'm talking about.
-
I'm not sure how to fix that. You could try downloading the microsoft font package but I'm not sure that will help.
I'm finding a few other bugs in FF3 too but I don't know enough to begin to describe them. Luckily it works well enough for me and if I am dissatisfied I can roll back to FF2. -
Hi guys, do you mind to tell me what are those acronims, FF2, FF3, FFx, are these macros using the Fn key plus a Fx key? What are these supposed to do?
-
Lol ^^ FF= firefox
-
Lol, I don't use FF, so I guess 2 and 3 are different versions?
-
What browser do you use? FF3 is the lastest version and is currently being beta tasted.
-
I don't see FF3, but the version under help says 2.0.0.13.
-
That's firefox 2. So did you try linux finally? You can install it directly in windows with wubi.
EDIT: Wubi doesn't work in vista.... -
I'm waiting for my laptop I sent fro repair, a 17" screen I bought from Hypersonic, as I have said in the past they are not very trustable, they promised I would get it last week, but I'm still waiting. I have two HDD in that Laptop, so I will keep one with XP and the other will convert into Ubuntu.

Scratch what I was saying about Ubuntu 8.04 Beta. Today's update was not just an update, but an upgrade of the kernel, etc. which destabilized my install. It will be a great OS when the final release appears in a few weeks but I will be goofing around with Mint KDE 4.0 in the meantime.
-
-
Ayle, it's the kernel upgrade. File system screwed up, buttons missing on programs, etc. etc. Everything is repairable, I'm sure. I just don't have the patience to hunt down the bugs. Like I said, 8.04 will work out of the box for the IFL90 but we will have to wait a few more weeks! Hopefully it will have all the new stuffs.
I didn't care for Mint KDE today. Seems like the KDE controls conflict or simply don't work although I actually liked the desktop (normally I hate KDE even though it is very customizable). It's back to Ubuntu 7.1 for a few more weeks, maybe longer. I'm going to test out Fedora on my older Gateway here in a minute.
I did get sound to work on 7.1 finally!!! It turns out that it is a very simple work around. How did I overlook this for months? Duh. -
Man that sucks... that'll teach me putting my home folder on the os partition... I think I'll give hardy another try, the update should work if if go from virgin to up-to-date.
-
Yes that ^^^ will probably work. I still think 8.04 is going to be a great distro on the IFL90. A few more weeks and we should be set.
-
Well since it is a lts release they'd better make it perfect as it is going to be used for a long moment.
-
I haven't received my laptop yet, I'm glad I didn't use the beta one.
-
Well beta is beta, when you use one you are supposed to expect heavy breakage. On another note I found what the install seem to have destroyed: libgnome-desktop-2... I tried reinstalling it but it seems like the whole system depends on it so it was a no go. Back to 7.10 for now.
-
^^^ me 2....I was hoping for a smooth update to the final release (that's what the notes made it sound like) but it looks like they are tossing in some upgrades at the last minute which is fine with me!
-
-
-
Argh!!! I hosed my hard drive... While it was my fault I think the partitionning part of the ubuntu installer should be in bold fonts to prevent people like me to click on guided-use whole disk instead of manual =/... Time to invest in a bigger external hd.
-
Let me know when the final Ubuntu is ready.
-
From their schedule it will be released the 24th. It seems like they have fixed the beta, just installed and updated it and everything works saves for firefox instability with flvs...
-
I haven't gotten my laptop yet from repair, so the 24th will just fine.
-
Anyone checking out Sidux???
-
What is Sidux?
-
Another Debian base distributions... I checked their website but it seems like they use kde which I hate so it's a no go for me...
-
How's your 8.04 install treating you Ayle?
-
It's working good, here is my history with it so far:
- Installed for 1st time worked well.
- Kernel update fubared my install.
- Reinstalled and did a partial upgrade, system up and running.
- Installed nswrapper because flash crashed Firefox half of the time...
- Installed nvidia 169.09 because the 169.12 from the repo where giving me pink/orange shadows with compiz
- Everything running smooth as silk ^^.
-
Tomorrow is the D day, right?
-
Yup even tough many people are already running final.
-
Ok, I got my laptop, I have two HDD (250GB and 100GB), the 250GB is W-XP and the 100GB I want it be Ubuntu, can a burn ubuntu CD format my HDD?
Also, it seems that 8.0.4 is for desktop, do we have one for laptop? -
Yes the live cd have the power to destroy your xp partition if you don't read what's on the screen and choose the wrong option.
You have two choice: remove the xp hard drive before installing or ???(I don't remember I'll edit this a soon as I experiment with the install with 2 hdd). -
The live cd should find both HDD's and ask which HDD to get Ubuntu, then when I will select the right one, then it will probably say that it is not formated and ask permision to format it..................
-
It doesnt ask you if it's formatted or not. There are 4 options: resize, use entire disk, use maximum continuous amout of free space, manual.
-
I see, so perhaps the only choice is to remove the XP HDD.
-
With manual partitioning, the installer won't erase anything you don't want to. You just need to pay attention to what you are doing and read the documentation if it seems too complicated.
-
Right now my second HDD is not formatted, so my question is, will Ubuntu reconize and differantiate among both HDD's? Will it show me HDD H: NTFS and HDD B: Not formatted, what do you want to do type of question? Something like that. I guess I will just have to try it, hopefully I won't screw things up, it's long to reformat a HDD.
-
The Ubuntu installer will always give you the real deal about what is going on with each of your HDs. It will list both HDs and will tell you which partitions exist on each of them and what type of filesystem exist on each partition.
For an HD that has never been used before you will see the HD listed, it will have no partitions and therefore no filesystem. You may want to check out this site:
http://users.bigpond.net.au/hermanzone/
The guys there have put up a series of installation guides with copious screenshots that show you what to expect. -
Can't read can you use another tool to capture the image?
Thanks! -
Which part cant you read?
