Hey henxu,
Glad to hear you got the 3650 working, at least if my 8600 goes out again (or should I say "when" it goes out again), I know there's a way to fix it.
Did you have to do any modifications to the card to make it fit? How are your temperatures -- any overheating problems?
for Overclocking, see here: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?p=3000755#post3000755
As for your bios, I'd say upgrade to whatever is latest, but if everything is working okay, there's no need to do so (although now that I think about it, the early bios version in mine didn't boot with 4GB of ram, had to remove one of the memory modules, upgrade the bios, and then put the 2nd module back).
-
If you watch the 8600 that's attached to your NB, you'll see 4 holes for the 4 heatpipes screws. The 3650 doesn't have those 4 holes (actually, it's kind of metallic structure that it's glued to the bottom of the card) , so you will have to remove that thing off from the 8600 and put it in the 3650. (I haven't glued it to the gpu yet, don't know if other people have done it)
Temperature, after first time booting plus ATI drivers installed, well, It idled kinda around 60-70º, and after playing a bit of games (like Heroes of Newerth with settings at max , AA disabled), it went up to 90-100ºC (with peaks of 105º C)
That was yesterday, today when played same game (only 5 minutes for testing while yesterday was 2 hours straight playing), it was about 80º.
I'm not very sure about that, these data are what Everest says but I don't really rely on it. Furthermore, I've noticed that my CPU is hotter than before, it can reach to 90ºC easily (EDIT) WITHOUT playing games plus that the fan blows a lot more than before
Taking into account, that I haven't replaced the heat pads and the thermal paste yet -

Hello again, I've received my HD3650 from ebay. Unlucky it's not working. It's with Acer vbios - see the url here. Notebook is not booting with this card, the fan is ok, hdd led lights just for the first few seconds and nothing more. I can't boot from USB Flash, CD-R and HDD. I can't see anything on screen, even on external. Maybe it's a vbios problem but how can I flash it now when I can't boot ? It's a 512MB DDR2 M86 Rev.2.0 HD3650. Motherboard and all the stuff seems to work OK - without any card, I can hear the windows start sounds, I can boot from CD and from USB, when I plug in the card - it's just idle working and I can do nothing. Anybody has any ideas how to solve it ?
Thanks in advance. Best regards. -
If you can get a proper vBIOS (maybe someone in here can provide it for you from their working 3650 cards), you can easily blind flash the vBIOS to the version that you need. But first get the proper vBIOS.
-
Thanks, I've found vBios for this card but the problem is that I can't flash it other way than unsoldering the bios chip and programming it in EEPROM/Flash programmer. When the card is unplugged - system boots up, everything's working. When I plug the ATI card - I can't boot from USB,CD, HDD. I don't know why.
-
That is unexpected. What should happen is for the system to start up and boot normally (after some time spent in post). Your screen will remain black throughout the entire process, but the rest of your laptop should still be kick in the background.
Are you telling me that with the Acer vBIOS your computer remains dead all the way ? -
Well, I'm not 100% sure that it really has Acer Vbios - it was only mentioned in the ebay auction description and this is the only thing that confirms that and what I believe for this moment. I will try to backup vbios with my programmer and compare it to the one I've donwloaded. If this will not help - I'm stucked.
Without the card and with damaged old Compal 8600M GT - it's booting - I can hear windows sounds, close system by Alt+F4 and so on. After I plug in the ATI card - there is no screen on internal and even external monitor, USB stick not working - no signal on the LED, only DVD-R Drive is active, but going standby after checking the disc, HDD Led just blink two times and that's it, the notebook is just idle working with Power LED and Fan ON. -
If the CD is working... then maybe there still a chance for a blind flash.
Make a bootable CD which will automatically flash the vBIOS and see what happens.
To force the laptop to boot from the CD, set the BIOS to boot from the CD and than remove all other media except for the CD drive. -
It's not working that way. CD just turning around and idle. The last chance is with programmer, if this won't work - I'll throw that sh*t away.
Thanks anyway. -
Ok.
I just got my 3650 working for a few days.
But, got a, well, not so big, but it still is a problem.
I thought that it was time to change the thermal pads that sticks de GPU and some other cores to the heatpipe. Today, I've received something that It is not what I was looking for. http://cgi.ebay.es/ws/eBayISAPI.dll?ViewItem&item=130353710926 This is what I received, very thin, and don't really know how to use it however I don't want to throw it away so I have to use it.
So, what can I do?:
1. Replace the default thermal pads and use what I have received + AS5 on it? (Don't think it is a good idea, the pad is way thicker, don't think it will make contact between the heatpipe and those little GPU cores)
2. Keep the old thermal pads ? (but i want to use the thermal adhesive pad for sometthing).
Thanks again.
3. Tell me what I have to do.
EDIT: I can't afford to waste more money. Those 4 thermal pads from the GPU really are really annoying me a bit. -
atiflash.exe -log -i -reboot
And it does reboot, but the logfile is still completely empty!
Also tried atiflash.exe -i -log -reboot
Should i give a blind flash a try? -
Hi there.
Just found this, It says MXM II compatible, do you think it would have vBios problems with our Compal IFL90?

Hey henxu, i have a fl90 too and my 8600m gt broke a few days ago...
, I saw you installed a 3650 without any problems and that you can find another one(DDR III I think you said) for 60€, is that one compatible with our laptops??? thanks
P.D.: Acabo de ver que eres de Madrid, asi que si no entendiste algo de mi pesimo ingles no dudes en preguntar jejej -
makko he visto que tienes el mismo problema que yo, has conseguido resolver algo?
Gracias. -
I've got my uncle at China atm so I can tell him to bring one for you. If you want something related to buying one for you, send a PM to me.

Well, I'm going to buy a 3650 DDR3, but before I want to know how can I flash the vbios in case i need to do it, because i suppose that I'll have to do a blind flash isn't it??
-
The command would be:
Code:atiflash -f -p 0 bios.rom
-
Yep I knew that, I've seen many tutorials but my question is, if I plug the GPU and it has an incompatible vbios, will I see something in my screen?? In that case how can i flash the bios?? THX
-
Anybody knows where i could find a new motherboard for my ifl 90?
Only motherboard.
I was talking with henxu and i dont have the same symptoms on my computer. -
I know only of one German reseller who sells the motherboards, but the price is to high. 238 euro (322 dollar). Depending on where you are you could try to get your motherboard fixed.
-
Somebody help me with the vbios plz!!!!
-
In spain there is a vendor that has de motherboard, it cost 224 (taxes not included) euros.
is this a trusted site?

I don't have any problem by the moment because i haven't assembled it, i only want how to do it cos i don't want to take risks, i saw on the web that if the vbios is incompatible you can't see anything in the screen so... How can i flash it???? thx to all

I know but, i want to know how to do it!!!!, that's my problem

Heya,
The 8600 on my IFL90 stopped working entirely a few months ago now, and I was looking at upgrading it to a 3650 (or perhaps 4650).
The information I have gathered from this seems quite sporadic though, which leaves me feeling a bit daunted. In some cases, people seem to need a vbios update, in some cases the heatsink needs filing to make it fit, and in some cases overheating is an issue (in each, I have seen posts along the opposite line also).
I was just wondering if any clarification could be provided, namely:
1) Would I need to file away at the heatsink or anything to fit either of these cards? (I gather yes.)
2) Would I need to do anything with the vbios? (I gather no.)
3) Will overheating be a problem (likely moreso with the faster 4650)?
If I go for the 4650, I have noticed it recently become available at mxm-upgrade.com, incase anyone was wondering where one may be available, and if it makes a difference to any ofthe above queries! (now ive mentioned that about 3 times, I feel like im doing all the advertising for them, oops!).
Anyway, any clarification on the above would be greatly appreciated! I have very little experience (none.) with this side of things, but really could do with fixing my laptop now as its been several months!
Thanks in advance for any help!
James, -
1) Yes, you would need to modify your heatsink a bit if you by the Mobility Radeon HD3650 or 4650 or 4670.
2) No, a vbios update is not needed with ATI cards.
3) If you modify the heatsink so to fit the card correctly and if you apply thermal paste like intended you should have no overheating issue. Additionally you could also update the vbios on the HD3650 or the HD4650 to change the vcore from 1.1V to 1.0V in high performance mode to considerable reduce the heat. The temps should stay below 90°C in any case as long as the heatsink fits the cards and the quality thermal paste is applied correctly.
Also €200 is quite some price for the HD4650 with DDR2. Check out this (~155 euro) site or this site (105 euro), although mxm-upgrade might be more trustworthy. -
Finally I used the HD3650, it works fine, 75º max
, but sometimes my laptop reboots when I'm playing and I dunno why it happens...someone can help me??
-
Probably because the graphic card breaks the temp threshold, I don't know how much it is, around 100C. You should undervolt the GPU to lower the temps.
-
Well, he said the card reaches 75°C max, so that should not be a problem. How do you get this value? Which program you use and how?
-
True, I must've misunderstood his statement. I thought that was max idle temp. Dunno why really.
But then again, how can he know what was the temp when the NB restarted. -
Check your clocks. They might be non standard and make the card unstable at full power.
-
Well, after a couple of days, I think it's because I'm using W7 RC 7100 and it is showing me a message which says that it has expired and I have to buy it, today it rebooted while I was using internet explorer so I don't think it's a gpu problem...would it be because that??
-
Most certainly. Starting from March 1 the Win 7 RC will reboot itself every 2 hours.
-
Any HD3650 can go in the FL90?
-
-
sorry for my english... -
Both will work. -
anyone can tell me where buy the ati 3650, in mxm-upgrade tell me that they cards don't work in ahtec sense xfl-90, and the webs i visit posted in topic are in chinnesse or japanesse, i don't understand!!!
thanks a lot

Hi there!
I have a two and a half year old IFL90. The 8600 crashed a couple of weeks ago and I have replaced it with a HD3650 512MB DDR2.
The graphics card seems to work ok, but I am unable to install any driver for it. I tried it first on Windows XP SP3. On the device manager the card appears just as a VGA compatible card, and it doesn't recognize the vendor, or anyhting. I have tried to install original ATI drivers, Acer drivers (the card has an Acer vbios), and modded drivers, but they don't work.
The Bios of the laptop was quiet old, and I have updated it to check if that was the problem, but the drivers keep failing.
On Windows 7, the default microsoft drivers identifies the card as an ATI HD3650, but again, I cannot install ATI drivers to get 3D acceleration.
Any on hint on what could be the problem?
Thanks in advance. -
Hello there!
I'm new on this forum so hello everyone
I've been using Compal FL90 for over 3 years now. Yesterday my 8600M GT died (suprise!). Used the famous 'baking oven' trick, but it's only delaying the inevitable. Was wondering about options to replace the GT. Obiously, HD3650 is one, but I was thinking of getting HD4650 (someone posted link to german store that can provide those -> http://www.laptop-ersatzteile.de/index.php?a=201346&ref=Elmar.com I believe).
So my question is, will the change be more or less painless like with 3650 or will I need to fiddle with changing bioses and such? Has anyone tried it yet (I know those cards are hard to get hands on). Getting 8600M again is not an option ofcourse. Also, I know that ATI has poor drivers for linux, and since I'm using Linux as my only OS, is that true for 3650/4650 series. I know ATI can be real pain in the with trying to make it work (I had huge problems with X800Pro in my stationary pc to make it work with direct rendering under Linux).
Thanks for all the replies in advance
