Maybe that was causing the delay and BIOS problems?

Hmm... I'm not sure... I wouldn't be suprised if the reason for not having HDMI is simply because Vestel made a mistake on the order. One thing that impressed me during my visit was the extent they tested their machines on each different OS to make sure that there weren't any corners cut anywhere. I guess that is the reason for the BIOS delay and also the reason they are not offering 64bit...

First things first, Sorry about the poor quality of these pictures. I really don't know why they turned out so badly (when I do the full review I will make sure they are a lot better :)) Also, it is difficult to capture the paint finish with a camera. I am pretty sure this one has a different finish to the sample i saw at novatech as it is less blue and more a glittery black

This photo sort of shows the glittery effect of the paintwork.

    Specifications:

    Intel Core 2 Duo P9500 2.53gHz CPU
    4GB 800mHz DDR2 RAM
250GB 5400rpm Hard Drive (Western Digital)
    nVidia 9600M GT graphics (DDR3)
    15.4" WSXGA Display (X-Glass)
    DVD-RW (Tss Corp)
    2GB Intel Turbo Memory
    Intel 5100 AGN Wireless Card
    Bluetooth
    6 Cell Battery

    Initial Thoughts:

The X50 has quite eye catching design with glittery paintwork. It seems to be pretty sturdy but it does feel a little cheap compared to my Clevo M570U. Unlike many notebooks with a glossy finish, the X50 doesnt pick up fingerprints very easily except for the small area around the touchpad. There are a few small things that make this machine feel a little cheap, such as the power button which doesnt seem to be attatched propery. The keyboard, unlike the previous chassis from vestel, seems to be pretty sturdy and doesn't seem to miss keystrokes. There isn't really any flex at all even though for some reason, it reminds me of using my dad's Acer.

Sadly, there is no HDMI, S-Video, SPDIF or MMX ports which are options from Vestel (the ODM). Infact their isnt a DVI port either, only a standard VGA.

I have to say however that the touch control buttons above the keyboard are some of the best I have ever used and are very responsive. Sadly, due to the dedicated GPU and small battery, With almost full battery, I think you would be lucky to get 2 hours from it (although i will test this more in-depth in my full review).

Please look out for my full review which I will be completing over the next few weeks :)

    Thanks for the post.

I am really stuck between choosing the X50 MV Pro and the Rock Pegasus 520

What are the better of the two graphic cards - the GDDR3 512mb 9600mGT or the DDR2 1gb 9650mGT?

Do Rock sell systems with no operating systems?

Any advice would be much appreciated.

    Cheers,
    Bruce

Zawezome! I think after this initial teaser review, I'll be satisfied for a few days. Take your time with the main article and put that machine well through its paces.

Oh and those pictures aren't bad at all. Some people think a bigger picture mean better quality but I couldn't care if the picture doesn't fit into the whole screen without scrolling around. Good stuff!

I'd choose the GDDR3 512MB Hewi. Having 1024MB VRAM is wasted with a card which only has a 128-bit bus. It will never use all that memory. The GDDR3 on the other-hand will be quite a bit faster. In other words, if they were both kitted out the same otherwise that Rock laptop will get it's butt kicked. :D

That's really good! I hope the full review comes soon - as I am close to buying it.

Rock don't sell laptops without an operating system sadly. From what I have heard, it appears that the 9650M GT with DDR2 should be faster than the 9600M GT with DDR3. I am slightly unsure as to whether the X50 actually has DDR3 anymore because in GPU-Z it says the memory is running at 800mhz which i thought was DDR2...

Bear in mind that the Rock doesn't have a Glossy display and such an attractive design, but I think it probably has better build qualtiy.

    Thanks for the info Henry.

Can this be confirmed that the X50 MV Pro is only running a DDR2?

    Cheers,
    Hewi

Sorry for the confusion.... I think the memory is actually GDDR3 when I compared it to the information for my Go 7900GTX which is running DDR3 memory.

One thing I have noticed though is how big this laptop actually is. In comarison to a Clevo M570RU, it is just as deep and only about 2cm narrower (even though it is thinner :))

(Note: I am taking the depth of the M570RU as the same as my M570U without the Audio DJ bit)

Whoa, sorry for the mis-information. Hadn't realized that Rock had updated the card in the Pegasus 520 to a 9650M GT from a 9600M GT. Sneeky people!

That should make the Rock better as previously stated. Yet still, not by much.
Mmm, what is with the current spread of 15" high-end laptops that are nearly as big as their 17" brothers?

Rock only updated the card a few days ago when the NDA was lifted on the 19th of August. The X50 has around 2 cm of bezel on either side and 3 - 4 top and bottom!!!
