I find all of this VERY interesting..... especially given the fact that a week ago, I bailed on my K|N Nagamaki pre-order. Why? The soon to be released ASUS W90Vp, w/dual Mobility Radeon HD 4870's!
Here's a little food for thought:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=351318
Interestingly enough, I PM'ed Justin, and he indicates that customizable models of the W90 will be available via XoticPC. It's looking mighty GOOD, and I think this will be the route I am taking.
Bottom line..... I am not spending a dime, until SOMEONE sells me those 4870's!
Regardless how all this plays out, I wish all the best here for the Whitebook owners.
Regards,

I have a whitebook thats 2 days old. And I was planning on returning it anyway before I heard about any of this, despite a significant restock fee, for various other reasons I wont mention. Does anyone else think this should cement that notion?
By the way, http://www.rkcomputer.net/rkcnotebooks/index.php?l=product_detail&p=95 doesnt show the "confirmed support for 4870s" anymore. That's something I guess.
Also, can I find this news somewhere? I cant find it. Thanks in advance. -
for the cost of this rig also with dual 3870's depending on how you built yours (bought barebones and put your own parts in) a system could be had with a qx9300 for not much over 2000$ when all is done if you look for the right parts. there is still no question for the money spent on this rig (unless you spent like 4k$ or something) this rig is still awesome either way. show me another one that can be had for the same amount of money (again we are talking barebones here) that will perform the same

found it thanks and hummmm makes me question stuff. drama is not saposed to happen in the computer world. there is only 2 options it works or doesnt we dont need any more he said she said
-
i was personally told there were heat issues that needed to be resolved with the 4870 and that flex was working on it.
i was also today told from someone at dell that alienware plans on keeping the m17 through most of the current year if that helps.
at this point i can only say this is what i was told. it came from a normally reliable source to me so take it for what you will -

Currently there is no plan in removing this system, we will continue providing support for this machine. At the present time there is no information regarding future changes.
from alienware armando -
^^ exactly what my source told me but they added the heat issues at this time. so it seems they do know what they were talking about.
-
and they still didn't answer the question about the 4870's nor the status with flex.
so he wasn't an inside gossip employee..hahahaha
we're gonna need you to get back in there and find us a gossiping employee..
your mission: to secure the real, if you succeed, then you will be our hero for 30 seconds...but should you fail......well you already know the rest...lol -
OCZ will not stop supporting the current owners of the DIY/Whitebook.
Bios updates, that may be difficult, we will just have to see how that plays out right now.
This had nothing to do with proposed 4870 availibility. -
This had nothing to do with proposed 4870 availibility.<---- what does this mean?
-
4870s will be available at some point.
-
-
not what i wanted to hear
-
kind of wanted to hear that from ryder since he "works for ocz"
but thanks for the answers! -
the m15x now sells with the 3870's....
ethier there dumping the 3870's to make room for 4870's or there dumping the 3870's to stop selling the m17 ......ohhhhh
-
The lack of 4870s, plus the possibility of future drama when trying to get support for the Whitebook, are significant factors in pushing me over the edge in returning the Whitebook. I'm losing money, and keeping a lesser notebook over it (but cheaper cuz it was %30 off), but its better than losing the full amount in a year or two when OCZ disowns all of us, with me still wanting to buy the new Clevo d90 i7 refresh.
One more thing I still havent had any luck in finding this news anywhere but here. Does anyone have any links, or is this all coming from direct dealings with OCZ/Flex? -
the 4870's from what i am being told are still in the works just that ocz will not be getting involved. and 100% ocz is not going anywhere so the support will still be there. they have a surplus of parts and gpu's etc for warranty issues still in stock they are keeping there as i was told
-
But in order to get them, at this point, the only likely source will be Alienware?
I mean I'm not one of you guys on the inside. The only info I know of is what shows up on google and what I read here. But from what I'm reading, what E-wrecked and johnkss are speculating sound extremely plausible. -
-
-
Oh yea I assumed that, regarding my warranty. Support and drivers are a different issue. Also, I was more concerned with the 4870's.
Anyway, if OCZ was the middle man directly dealing with Flex for ALL resellers EXCEPT Alienware, then one would think that all our resellers except AW would need another middle man to deal with Flex to replace OCZ. -
be patient, someone else is supposed to be getting involved. as soon as i know anything ill post it unless someone else does first
-
t5hanks z your helping us all out by keeping us informed ...its like we have been told our baby is getten taken away
-
well your's isnt really you are alienware lol... as i said to im sure there will be 4800 series cards out. it has been already proven that the 3870's worked in the 9750 and visa versa. so im sure there will be options of some sort. this system still rocks. i would not get to crazy over anything at this point
-
OCZ's reasons for no longer carrying the Whitebook, have nothing to do with Video cards. -
I called my reseller this afternoon, and it looks like I'm not getting out of the restock fee. So I'm going to HAVE TO BE patient then. I'll wait the 30 days. Hopefully well know if the 4870s are still a go or not. If not, I'm out %15 AND a sweet Whitebook.
It is great to have these guys on the inside though. Keeps us all from going crazy. Well, most of us. -
yea i agree .......well 15 percent does suck and the losse of a whitebook is worse lol
yea im AW but i like the option to go outside them .....lol infidelitybut now they have our genitalia and i cant buy and get some stuff 3d party
-
see folks, one of the many speculations cleared up -
well it...there go my hopes of getting a new laptop sooon. I held off for so long to wait for the 4870s...now OCZ is pulling the plug? ARGH...hope somebody picks up the ball soon!
-
-
it was more of a ocz/ flex thing than anything else gerry.
-
What's the general concensus then? Stick with the Whitebook for now?
I'd like to get a sense of what's going on, may have to cancel my order before they start building this week. -
Shane@DARK. Company Representative
There's no real reason not to stick with it unless the whole reason you bought it was due to 4870s. It will still be supported by OCZ; there just won't be any more produced.
-
Thx DarkSmiley. I really couldn't care less about the 4870s right now. I'm picking it up cause I preferred it as my laptop of choice for future dv editing.
-
Well, Flex apparently had plans to upgrade the GPUs in the future with the display port that is blocked in current models because the 3870 cards don't support it...
-
if that was the reason for the whole fallout then
..pointless
-
I'll never buy a flextronics or ocz product ever again.

The weights are near equal..... for those who wish to complain of the W90's weight, GEEZ, GO TO THE GYM..... ya need the workout anyway!
I think I will nickname it, "The Slab"! -
nice!!!!....lets just hope some one will pick up the whitebook now that ocz backed out. if some body could work a deal they would make alot of money
im the same way i am big so big laptops feel small to me ... -
j/k -
we should write an open letter and/or petition to flextronics or something like that.
-
-=$tR|k3r=- Notebook Virtuoso
Are we to interpret that as the 4870's being of a different MXM type..... just as the pictures others have posted..... a different slot?
If so, GEEZ, Not Good! -
