Hi has anyone heard of Rizeon in the UK? www.rizeon.com
I'm thinking of buying a laptop from them but have never heard of them.
Also does anyone in the UK know if its better to buy from a company who a trade association member? Would I be protected as a customer?
Thanks![]()

I've seen the name around. It popped up in the Asus forum early last year because Rizeon was developing a built-on-Asus line as discussed here. There is even a forum member called Rizeon, but they seem to have become very inactive.
I would suggest that you think up some questions and email them to Rizeon and see what sort of response you get. This can boost your confidence, or otherwise.
As for protection as a customer, there is a risk that any of these retailers, big or small, can go under. If Rizeon have found the right niche and are selling good products are reasonable prices, and thus making sufficient margin to live off, then they could sell stay around. They must have survived the first year, which is a critical time for any small business.
Hope this helps,
John -
Hey John thanks for the advice.
I was speaking to their live help guys yesterday and it all seemed fine.
I did some research on the laptop i wanted to and its not an Asus one...but its made by Compal who are the 2nd large manufacturer for a lot of well known brands...i've seen a few reviews of that elsewhere and the quality etc etc seems to be good.
After doing more research i found out they had a review in whatlaptop too sometime last year
...So i went ahead and ordered it...i dont know much about the company but i know the laptop is good, so we'll just wait and see how the service goes and all and if anything goes wrong i guess thats when i find out how helpful they are.
I dont know whether they will honour this moneyback offer they are doing at the moment but it does say they're a pc association member and that if theres a dispute on whether or not a laptops damaged by technical fault i can have it examined by a 3rd party so i guess that reassuring.
One other thing the sales guy mentioned is that they are working out an insurance backed warranty and that i could purchase it within 30 days of delivery...lol...not too bothered about that next year its quad core! lol...
You're right about the whole small big company thing though...look how big time/tiny were...i did a project on them and they actually sold 54000 laptops in 2004...how did they go bust!
oh well i'm waiting now, but i can't wait!i'll keep ya posted!

Thanks for the update. it sounds promising.
I noticed that they had some other notebooks on their site which I thought were Compals.
John -
JasonO any news on your laptop? I'm seriously considering a tweaked FL90 over a Zepto 6324. I'd be interested to hear if it's arrived yet and what it is like. I'm hoping it's good as the hardware specs look great for the money.
cheers!
S -
Hey Sasanac,
I wasn't going to bother doing a review or anything seeing as I have a Rizeon HGL30 which is basically a Compal HGL30...and its old!
Lol I've had it for like 4 weeks now and its trouble free (touch wood).
Granted its not the best looking laptop, I can't compare Sony or Asus etc to or even the new HP's....but the specs are really good compared to most other brands I would easily say I saved £100 atleast.
I do however wish I waited now because I may have went for the Rizeon S37S had I known because that does look good.
Mr Rizeon HGL30:
14.1" WXGA
Intel T7200 2GHz
2GB Ram
160GB 5400RPM HD
Geforce 7600 Go Graphics
1.3MP cam
Fingerprint scanner
Vista Home Premium
Very Good for £800.53 inc vat I think
The Build Quality is very good atleast 8/10 I would say and performance is enough to last me another year or 2. I'm not such a dedicated gamer or anything but I can play a few of the oldies max payne etc etc on this no probs.
Ordering the laptop and all went ok no problems. I was receiving emails atleast every 2 days for the 10 days it took updating me on the expected delivery date and they called to check if I would be home before they delivered. They didn't offer insurance backed warranties a month a go so they gave me the option to take it up but I doubt I will use the laptop for more than a year so I'm happy with their standard 2yr car.
I had to do tons of research before I got it because I had never heard of Rizeon before and they're kinda new but apparently they only sold to schools etc before so they have never done any major advertising but the sales guy said they want to get into the consumer side of things because they think they can provide really good customer service and they want to create a brand.
I actually heard of them from this Asus forum on this site.
From my research I found out they have had 1 review of a budget laptop found here...
http://www.tech.co.uk/computing/mobile-computing/notebooks-and-tablet-pcs/review/rizeon-z9400l-wl
I can also see that they resell Asus and Compal laptops and if you read the forums and you can easily find reviews and info on the build quality, performance etc etc.
Erm what else to say I'm happy with my choice. Its pretty high quality stuff. They haven't given me any reason to complain yet
Everyones got different expectations service and good companies etc...go on you tube and search dell and its really funny...lol...but these guys are part of an industry trade association, they give good insurance backed warranties if they were to ever go out of business like time/tiny/multivision/watford etc etc..list goes on...so it all pretty sound to me.
Hope that helps
p.s. thanks John Ratsey -
ah great.. it sounds promising.. I'm definately going with Rizeon FL90 over the Zepto as the value for money is great with Rizeon. I've been bugging them on their Live Chat a lot today and they were more than helpful.
I definitely don't see the point of paying extra for the brand name if there is the same hardware underneath. The spec I am looking at is:
Screen: 15.4" Wide Screen WXGA+ (1440x900) Glare Type Display
Operating System: Microsoft Windows Vista Home Premium Edition
Warranty: 1 Year Collect and Return Insurance Backed Service
Processor: Intel® Core™ 2 Duo T7300 2GHz 4MB L2 Cache 800MHz FSB
Memory: 2GB Dual Channel DDR2 PC-5300 667MHz - 2x1024MB
Hard Drive: 120GB 5400 RPM SATA Hard Drive
Graphics: Nvidia Geforce 8600M 512MB
Optical Drive: DVD Super-Multi(DVD-RAM/-R/-RW/+R/+RW)
Sound Card: High-Definition Audio with 3D Effect & Full Duplex
Wireless Card: Intel® PRO/Wireless 4965AGN network card
Turbo Memory : 1GB Intel Turbo Memory Card - flash memory module
Customisable Lid: None
Thermal Compound : Arctic Silver 5
Optical Mouse: None
Productivity Software: None
Security Software: None
which comes in at £855.40 Inc VAT, excl. Del
which is a bargain in my book.. the graphics is the GT version too not the GS (as confirmed by Live Chat today lol)
(stuck in the Turbo ram module as it's only £18 on top but as everyone says the jury is out on how effective they are) -
looking good..only the 1 year warranty though? Although I think the build quality is good and you really shouldn't have many hardware failures when they use kingston memory and seagate hard drives, always better to be on the safe side...I'd add the 2yr insurance backed warranty for an extra £34
making it...895.35 in vat -
I spent almost two hours talking with Rizeon through the live chat and have practically all the information I could ask for on this laptop. I would buy it in a heartbeat for that price but the graphics card is DDR2, not gDDR3 so that's almost definitely a dealbreaker for me. It's a real shame because I was really excited about it.
-
2hrs lol! I feel sorry for the sales rep who had to chat straight for 2hrs...but its a great service though...i remember when I was chatting I think I got a bit carried away and started asking for company confidential info lol
-
good point on the 2yr warranty JasonO I might ditch the turbo ram module and add the extra year.. just to keep the price inc delivery under the £900mark.
I would prefer gddr3 ram on the graphics card but I'm not a huge benchmark number cruncher and I'm sure I will be able to play any of the sort of games I normally choose. My main purpose of this machine is using Photoshop/Illustrator/InDesign/Dreamweaver on the go. I do agree with the gddr3 argument tho!
I'm very impressed with the kit they offer for such a good price.
Blummin eck.. 2hrs?!! wow.. I was apologising for hassling them after about 15mins lol.. if I'd known I'd have kept going a tad longer! I can't fault them on their level of presales support, it's far better than any of the resellers or even major manufacturers I have approached so far. -
Well, I also felt sorry for keeping him so long but that's his job and I wanted my questions answered. In case you're wondering, here are some more detailed specs on the Rizeon FL90. I got these from the sales guy:
- It comes with an 8600M GT with 512MB dedicated DDR2.
- It costs £35 + VAT to upgrade to a 9 cell battery (up from 6).
- The monitor has a 10ms response time (not 16ms), 140H/120V viewing angles, a pixel pitch of 0.23025, 250cmd brightness and 400:1 contrast ratios.
I have more information but that was directly tailored to my particular circumstances. -
hehe true I guess!
The response time on the screen is way slower than I would have expected.. it looks like I might have to get back on the live chat thing to ask some more questions!
thanks for the extra info Elegy
*edit*
I just got an email through from Rizeon, they apologised for the confusion and advised that the screen specs are as follows:
Resolution: 1440 x 900 WXGA+ Glare Type Display
Brightness: 250 cd/m^2
Contrast Ratio: 400:1
Viewing Angles(H/V):140/120
Pixel Pitch: 0.23025
Response Time: 10ms -
Yes, I just received an email from them saying he was mistaken and it's actually 10ms. I'll edit my post to prevent confusion.
-
Would be nice if you guys could get some photos up of your new Rizeon laptops when you receive it. As the FL90 does look like a very good buy.
-
I'm a bit torn between the Rizeon S96S and Rizeon FL90. I'm on a tight budget and I'm wondering whether I should dig deep for another £60 and get the FL90. Because the 8600M GS should be enough for me.
Are they a good company in your opinion?...up til now they have answered all my questions very quickly via live chat and they respond to emails very quickly too...other companies I've email still haven't replied.
Thanks for the help -
why not stick to a bigger, more reputable make like Alienware ?
-
Lil Mayz, last time I checked Alienware didn't have any of the latest santa rosa notebooks on their site...and the last time I check the same laptop for a little alien head on them would cost atleast another £250.
From a bit of reading on the forum about Rizeon it looks like they have been around for atleast over a year, they offer insurance backed warranties and they're the only company that responded to my sales query the same day.
Now I dont know much about their after sales...only JasonO looks like he has ordered from them...but if I think logically about this...
if a company doesn't respond quickly to a sales situation where it can make money...whats the chances of it responding to a service situation where its already made the money and the customer is stuck?
Lol looks like i've just reassured myself over the decision, but it makes sense to me!
Now i just need to think...S96S or FL90...i'm leaning towards waiting and getting the FL90 -
I will be ordering my FL90 next week.. planning on going for the following options:

I reckon that's very good value for money! Mine will come in at £895 inc VAT. There are no other manufacturers which come close to that price for that spec machine at the moment, at least there are none that I can find!
I'll post details of how it runs etc plus photos (if it's drastically different from the photos on the website) when I get my hands on it. I believe there is a 2 week (ish) lead time on these.
If it were me lfc4Life I would wait and spend the extra on the FL90 for sure. -
I too have been seriously thinking about getting the FL90 from Rizeon since it a has all the specifications I require all within a price I can afford.
However, the only thing I'm a little unsure on is the picture Rizeon shows. It's different from the Zepto Znote 3415W and from most other places. The only other place I can find that same model is http://www.marasst.com/
The model that Rizeon shows is listed as the IFL90(MA) on that site which in my opinion doesn't look quite so good. Maybe that's how Rizeon is keeping the price slightly lower, that or they may of just obtained the wrong images. -
Zeano
Compal make different versions of the fl90. I think rizeon have gone with the VBI version, the one that is regulated to intels CBB program. Thats why they offer things like the customisable lids etc etc...the main benefit is that you can find spare parts a lot easier.
From comparing the 2 the only thing the rizeon version does not have is the optional tv tuner so maybe thats why its a little cheaper.
Still though WXGA+ 1440 x 900 and 8600M GT is very very ideal and not many around. -
I just found a manual for the Compal IFL90.. (approx 12mb)
http://www.bizcom-us.com/support/IFL9091/UManual/030/IFL90-030_UM.pdf
I would imagine that that vast majority of this would apply for the Rizeon FL90 with a few minor differences such as TV card & IR sensor etc. -
excellent find Sasanac. Everything should be the same except for the screen and tv tuner.
The FL90 has a lot of interesting features not many people are talking about such as the face detection software with the camera, the power usb ports (u can use the usb ports with the system off) and the other host of multimedia functions built in...
I dont think the Rizeon FL90 has any competition at that price...
looking forward to some reviews -
thanks!
I'm looking forward to getting it, I'll still have a few weeks wait due to the lead time though.
From reading the manual the thing I was most pleased about was the fact that some of things are easy to get to from underneath. So HDD + memory upgrades will be a simple process. Not sure about where the mini cards go however, presumably they will be under the keyboard. Still it all looks pretty user friendly.
I haven't changed my mind about it's looks I still think it's pretty dull but it's the screen I will be looking at the most when all's said and done.
more IFL90 photos + drivers etc can be found here:
http://www.bizcom-us.com/support/
it's a horrible looking site but it does have the info! -
Sasanac my friend...looks like you will have to wait longer for you FL90 according to rizeon's site now...but hey they reducing prices further which will be good for some who actually want to order later on.
-
Hey ppls I been checking out the the Rizeon threads a lot because I have had an FL90 on order since last week.
They have been very good in updating me about the status of my order and let me know very early on about the delays. They also offered me a free targus carry case too
I got an email yesterday telling me about the further delay and then a call in the evening too to discuss what I wanted to do.
They offered me the FL90 E for £50 less and the carry case which retails at £40...so I thought what the heck...256MB 8600M GT is still very good at the price and probably all I need. The 512MB would have been nice but I'm going on holiday in the 2nd week of July and I need something before then.
Anyways I should have it next week. Looks exactly like the normal FL90...so will post some pics and benchmarks if I can. -
Hmm...I wonder I was deciding between the Rizeon S96S or the FL90 but now the FL90E might be the solution...the sort of inbetween. Plus its available already...
Noustyle it would be great if you could post some pics etc asap.
Thanks -
ah well... patience is a virtue and all that! I'll just have to wait a tad longer, I reckon it will be worth it in the long run!
-
I see they reduced the price by about £20 on the FL90...looks like you can get the intel turbo memory too now
-
but of course it's the insides that matters.
-
I actually think the Rizeon FL90's look rather smart, they dont look like gaming laptops but they seem to have all the good things on the inside just like you said Zeano.
All high quality parts...just like my HGL30...
this FL90 E though...spec for spec its only £6 more than that new bmw acer 5920 i think? which everyone is saying is terrific value...for anyone to come close to acers dirt cheap pricing is impressive. -
Anyone know what 'Insurance Backed' means (in regards to Rizeon's warranty)? On this page it reads:
I'm going to e-mail Rizeon about it, but does anyone here have un-biased info on it? It seems to me like it could just be a gimmick :S. -
Insurance backed warranties are the way to go when dealing with any company to be honest. When you buy from bigger international brands then one would think you're secure which is usually the case.
With UK companies only Rock direct and Rizeon offer these warranties. So if you were to buy from a uk company i would only trust those 2.
From what i understand...because I've asked them while I was considering it...you get an insurance certificate etc and then if anything goes wrong you call the number on that and deal with the claims company who will collect the laptop and give it to their repairers and send it back. From my research AXA and Domestic&General are the only insurers I've come across.
its certainly better than having no warranty...look at those multivision, time, careera or whatever they were called...all those customers...they didn't even have anyone to call when their computers went bust.
That being said it just strenghtens the selling proposition for Rock and Rizeon, just gives them another reason to say..."we're safe, buy from us"...so maybe gimmicky but definitely worth it...seeing as Rocks and Rizeons both cover Europe, so if you see it like that its a good warranty.
I'm interested in what John Ratsey has to say about these warranties...he usually has a good view on things -
John Ratsey Moderately inquisitive Super Moderator
I think the insurance backed warranty is the best option you can have for these UK companies. There is always some uncertainty about whether a problem is eligible for warranty cover, whether that cover is supplied by the manufacturer, retailer or an insurance company and I don't think the insurance company would be worse than the others.
I've got the Rizeon S37 on my list of possible purchases (should my awaited Samsung Q70 prove to be totally underwhelming). I would be quite happy to accept the insurance backed warranty although I think that Rizeon have got a niche market and as long as they can keep it that way they they should stay around.
John -
John - I was too tempted to go for the Samsung Q70 but after looking at the photos, it just doesn't look very nice although very portable. The S37S has the nicer appearance? I'm waiting for something proper reviews and photos of this laptop on the 7th (when presumably it is available). -
Thanks for the d=info John and Jason. More details can also be found at:
http://www.pcassociation.org/modules.php?name=Information&rop=display&info_id=36%A7ion=1 -
Hi I have been told my Rizeon FL90E has arrived at my house...at work at the moment but I will go home check it all out and give you guys a mini review.
I got the following spec:
15.4 WXGA screen
T7300 2GHz C2D
2GB Ram
1GB Intel turbo memory
160GB Seagate Momentus 7200.2 (they gave me the Gforce version with freefall sensors)
256MB Nvidia 8600M GT
Should be good...although i'll be lacking fingerprint, the 512Mb graphics and WXGA+ screen...should be more than enough for me
I'll try write a short review of things...i'll see if i can get some benchmarks of 3D mark but i'm not an expert when it comes to all this stuff... -
.
Really useful would be some opinion on the quality of the notebook (keyboard, touchpad, durability, etc), since there aren't many Rizeon owners to ask at the moment.
Edit:
Battery life (light load versus heavy load) would also be really appreciated.
-
Welcome to the Rizeon owners club noustyle...finally i'm not the only 1 any more
-
sorry dudes will have to wait til tomorrow...still at work..i'll get home and play with it for a day and then give some feedback...i hate work
-
Thanks im looking forward to your review - looking to buy a notebook with almost the exact same spec.
-
will post a full review by saturday at the latest. -
When you get more time with your FL90E would you mind taking some photo's of it, or at least one photo of the keyboard.. if you have a camera that is.
I'm wondering what the UK keyboard layout on these will be like.
Let me know what the glossy screen is like too, I'm a bit worried about getting a glossy screen since I have so many reflection problems with my old CRT monitor.
Thanks. -
-
hey folks will have something up for you today...i'm just downloading 3dmark and will run my tests on that...I'll have a review up by the evening
-
-
Ok before I get started I need to apologise for the pictures. I dont have my camera on me today and was using my phone...so i will take some proper ones. They dont do justice in my opinion.
Anways I originally ordered the FL90 but because of the delay was offered the FL90E at a cut price along with a choice of any of the Targus carry cases Rizeon sell.
I went for the Rizeon FL90 originally because it was a very feature packed laptop at a very good price. I've read a lot about it in the Compal forums here. After speaking to Rizeon I was really impressed with their service.
The Spec I got in the end was:
Rizeon FL90E 15.4" laptop 1280x800
Intel T7300 2GHz processor
2GB Kingston 667MHz Ram
160GB 7200 RPM Seagate Momentus 7200.2 Hard Drive
Nvidia Geforce 8600M GT 256MB
Intel Prowireless 4965 agn
1GB Intel Turbo memory
DVD SuperMulti (supports everything!)
2Mp webcam
Windows Vista Home Prermium
2Year collect and return insurance backed warranty
Targus Global Executive Plus Carry Case
£891.93 inc vat
Build & Design
People say it looks bland. It is pretty simple but I like it. Its a combination of matte black and very very dark grey/blue it looks like...still haven't figured it out. The has bright blue leds for the status lights and the power button, also on a hardware audio mute button.
Its a solid notebook. The lcd has no latch, its magnetised. The hinges are very good. The only 2 gripes I have is that the keyboard is a little noisy and the plastic on the palm rests could have been a little stffer. They are not major problems though...and i only found that by pressing every area of the laptop down.
If i try to push the lcd back without holding the rest of the laptop the rest of the laptop will lift off the table instead...so i think thats a good thing.
The track pad and buttons are very responsive and work well.
The lcd...hmm its good, its nice and bright...maybe a little pale. Its a lot better than the old matte screen Asus I had but i dont know what else to compare it to? Not a dead pixel insight which is a good thing.
Speakers
This has to be the best feature of this laptop for me. These things can get very loud and produce a good amount of base. Great for watching dvds etc...I actually haven't played any games on this thing yet but just been playing music and dvds on it. Excellent.
Performance
Still too early to tell. its got a good amount of power for me to do a lot of things at once and handles vista with ease but i'm slightly embarrased by the 3d mark score so dont want to mention it yet...I was told by Rizeon that these laptops are soo new that they only had beta drivers for the graphics card so I'm going to try out some other drivers until they email me with the new ones.
Sound and Noise
Again...this is a great feature...hardly makes a sound...the only think I can hear is a little bit of the hard drive...or the dvd drive when its spinning. The fans are spinning but they are very quiet and you have to put your head down to the keyboard to hear it.
You can hear the hot air being blown out when running 3dmark etc but if your playing games and you have the speakers on wouldn't be a problem at all. Again its not that loud.
Heat Issues
None really...i had this thing on for the last 6hrs now and only the left palm rest is slighly warm, not uncomfortable. The bottom seems to get hotter. the left side has the gpu and cpu.
Theres a lot of features I haven't even tried out yet. The camera is a good addition but I just tested it...good image quality on first sight.
The hardware wireless switch and hardware mute button are very nice features to have in my opinion.
From what I understand if you dont take the customisable panel option you'll get a matte black/silver vinyl cover...in this case it makes it look better as it adds the two tone colour scheme just like on the inside.
Anyways I will try get some better pics when my camera comes back to me...for the mean time I hope that helps you guys and let me know if you need to find out anything else...I've been really busy lately so apologies if i reply late.
I'm happy with my purchase. I like the features, performance and heck even the looks, the silver buttons and blue leds brighten things up.
To sum up the FL90 has a lot of good things going for it and only a few minor issues going against it.Attached Files:

Thanks noustyle for the reviews and pictures!
Really appreciate it!
By the looks of it, it looks like a great system. Although I still would opt for the FL90 but the estimated delivery being in August seems a bit of a joke! The 1280x800 on a 15" seems too small for my liking especially when I flogged my Dell Inspiron 6400 15.4" which had a 1440x900 resolution.
The screen is glossy right? Are the colours vibrant enough, do the blacks look black?I'm assuming the fans don't spin up too often do they?
From the cover of your notebook, the photo seems to illustrate an "engraved panel (where the branding is)" - is this the case? What's the weight of it like? -
the screen is glossy...the colours are vibrant enough for me...but i'm sure I've seen better. This is my first vista experience and I haven't even changed any of the settings yet. So I need to play with them. I can change things on the nvidia control panel too....i'll look into that later.
No the cover is just a plain matte black sheet with the rizeon branding in matte silver text.
The weight...feels pretty light to me...definitely around 2.8Kg or less. -
What software was pre-installed when the laptop arrived?
Are you confident that the 3D performance is just restricted due to dodgy drivers at this stage, did Rizeon give you an ETA on "good" drivers for the 8600?
Thanks for your review btw, much appreciated. I would just like to find some info out about the drivers- i'll probably email rizeon myself.
How long did your delivery take btw, i.e. time from ordering to it appearing on your doorstep, was the predicted time accurate?
Thanks again
