Can someone explain this? I have a PCS Recoil II and I’m running all my games on 3914mhz at 35 to 38w. Do I really need to push the CPU to 45w? I have Dual Channel 16Gb memory. Bios version is 1.02 from PCS

Well is the intel dptf driver installed? Have you tried following these instructions?

    https://www.reddit.com/r/Dell/comments/7byhjq/disabling_intel_dptf_for_good/

Because I cannot understand what single channel ram on its own would affect the power limit. But maybe it is a part of your system configuration that the intel dptf driver is able to detect. Then gets triggered and steps in / start interfering.

[edit] but if the dptf driver is not installed, then maybe look at the intel graphics drivers. Because that is the only other piece of software we have not looked at yet, which is known to write to your intel MSRs.

[edit 2] that is assuming your have already properly upgraded your BIOS and EC. So that the BIOS is not locked up your power limit (to 35w) at boot time.

So what about spare PSU? I googled the model# and looks like I can get the same unit from Newegg for $27.99 for the 120w... but are there better options? I would prefer one that goes straight in on the back of the laptop rather than 'L' shape that the supplied PSU has.

Also, did anyone upgrade from single stick 8gb to a new paired kit and want to sell their original 8gb stick? I'd still have to make sure it's a match spec wise, but could be a win win!

    Hey,
I am already powerless so maybe someone here will help me. I have Recoil 2 from PC Specialist changed bios to 1.16 from Mechrevo EC 1.33.09 and undervolt by TS -125 mV I have 16 BG RAM in dualchannel Gaming Center 1.2.2.8. When I normally use the computer have PL1 / 45 PL2 / 56 but when I start the game automatically change to 35. What could be the problem? Gaming Center set to GAME MODE fan too.

Is anyone here planning to open one of these up to do some maintenance on it? Can you try a SATA m.2 in the other slot?

I would like to know if this machine will accept 2x SATA at the same time. Without using the HDD bay. Thanks in advance.

Dang, could have run this test yesterday for you when I put in my 950pro and took out the 128gb drive it came with.

I've debated opening it back up to check the RAM specs since I forgot, but I gave away the 128 drive already :(

I may be wrong, but it seems that if you're at 3.9-4.0 GHz already, there's no reason to have more wattage. The problem was that people were getting power limit throttling down to 3GHz because the power was capped at 35W.

    Hi there,

Whilst the keyboard is tough to change on the Recoil II, it can be done. Typically we would suggest a return to perform this but the keys are not 'soldered' or anything to that effect.

We can't offer the upgrade for the Vyper however, due to the way the top case is made.

Just curious. Everyone that was having the PL 1 35w issue. Are you by chance using XTU? Does anyone here have the PL 1 35w issue that was using another alternative or forgoing similar programs altogether? I'm not sure if this is connected but I am curious since I have seen it commonly mentioned by users with the issue.

I have the Recoil 2 model from PC Specialist. I disable and locked turbo power limit on TS and it works like you said holding PL1 / 45 PL2 / 55. I wonder if there is any other way to keep it.

    Pozdrawiam :)

How is this power limited? You're at maximum turbo. Your CPU is not throttling. It wouldn't matter if the power limit was 150W here, it'd still draw exactly what you're seeing it draw right there.

Because XTU benchmark is HEAVILY dependent on RAM. It would never benchmark high with single channel memory. It is a bad CPU benchmark because it's so heavily dependent on RAM. The highest scores back in the haswell days were on 4700MQs and 4800MQs instead of 4930MX chips because people would tweak their RAM to 1333MHz cl6 (down from the average 1600MHz cl11) or 1600MHz cl7 and their scores would skyrocket... even beating 2133MHz cl11 RAM setups due to the massive latency drop.

Since dual channel memory is a massive bandwidth improvement, XTU would naturally shoot up.

I just so happened to snap that pic while boost was at max, but it was jumping all around. Check the low numbers. Wattage would never get above 35W and it would struggle mightily while processing computer turns.

The EC flash solved this for me. Wattage peaked out at 65, and never had any hanging. Thanks for the comment though.

    Mine went from 1135 ---> 1060 --> 1070 ----> 1158

Max boost was maintained throughout. UV -.125mv, temps maxed at 85C on the CPU

Max 62W pulled by the CPU as well.

Edit - I pushed my undervolt to -.135 mv and the numbers improved. Stayed above 1240.

    1258 ——-> 1244 ———-> 1252

    Impressive.

If you're using pictures to prove an issue, make sure you get a good one. Also, use HWiNFO64 next time as it has an average clock metric and you can show that you reset it after launching and running the game.

It also has a literal stat for your current power limit, which would've shown 35W at that time.

This guy had a post on the forum about how to mod the switches. As u can see he took out the switch from the board. Can’t u just replace the blue switch with the brown one or is this not possible?

That would be extremely tedious and time consuming to do on behalf of customers. I am doubtful they would want to do that, or have enough free time. However it would not be such a burden for a customer to do it themselves.

What would be best though is if PCS eventually just start getting newer stock of SKUs pre-configured with those brown switches. Like walmart has been. I really hope this happens after the nvidia gtx 2000 series refresh.

    Ahem. Cough cough.

You’re right it would be time consuming for them. But I think the most of us don’t mind to replace it by themself though. Give me a brown keyboard or switches and i do it myself lol.

I'm the guy of the video. It is more than possible, it is sure 100%. The problem is to find brown switch parts, that is quite impossible because OEMs buy the entire keyboard, not only the switches.
(i have modded every key of the keyboard. It tooks 1-2 hours to remove only all the switches and other 1-2 hours to do the mod in the video).
I also highly reccomend to NOT remove the switches near the border of the laptop (PGDN, - ,+ , ENTER, ESC, TAB ,CAPS,SHIFT,CTRL) because during the operation you risk to remove the black painting from the case with the screwdriver

So oddly enough I have been switching back and forth between this and my Alienware M15 trying to decide which to keep. Today I am getting a current throttling issue and the package power is again staying at or below 35 watts. Gaming fan mode and system mode are enabled, I checked power settings and I even went so far as to undo all undervolt settings. Very odd.

I know Bob thinks it has to do with RAM but I was fine the last time I used this. Checked the Bios and everything is the same there. It's very strange...

Marks in the XTU benchmark only hitting 950.

Got mine yesterday and was able to resolve the performance issues with single-channel DDR by disabling "Turbo Boost Short Power Max" in XTU. I posted about it on slickdeals here.

Well, I got the same power issue here now. A hour ago i updatet my BIOS and EC from PCS (BIOS 1.02) to 1.04 and EC from 1.05.09 to 1.25.xx don’t know the exact numbers. While on older BIOS and EC I hit 1200ish in CBR15. Now with the newer BIOS and EC it wont go higher than 1012.. TS shows PL2 is throttling. Cpu stays on 2.8ghz and after it’s almost done it goes to 3.2ghz running my laptop with dual channel 16gb.

What type of throttling do you see in XTU with Turbo Boost Short Power Max disabled? It should switch from Power Limit Throttling to Thermal Throttling, with much longer stretches of the CPU running un-throttled, esp if the fan is set to Turbo mode.
