Hey, I finally got around to trying your suggestions (Thank you!). So far, using throttlestop 8.70.6 with "FIVR - Disable and Lock Turbo Power Limit" enabled I was able to get slightly better battery life and lower temps.
ThrottleStop worked flawlessly, The main difference between now and my previous not-so successful attempt with throttlestop on this laptop is that I previously I was using version of Control Center from Eluktronics, As opposed to newer one from XMG this time.
Also I can't recall if I had FIVR - Disable and Lock Turbo Power Limit enabled previously so that might've been the issue.

Right now throttlestop works perfectly for me and I'm able to get ~5 hours of regular use with the 64wh battery. I even ended up deleting Control Center entirely.
Once again thank you for your help and creating this brilliant piece of software.

Right now the only issue I have with my GK5CP6Z is the unnecessarily aggressive fan profile, anyone had similiar experience?

I just got the old 4 cell damn, although I thought that someone on this thread reached out to a rep that told them it wouldn't fit. Thats the battery if anyone wants to give it a shot, based off the pictures of the 4 cell in this thread our chassis does have some room left on the sides and I can confirm the same.

After upgrading the battery, it looks like battery life is much better! A little over 8 hours running on 1 step higher than the lowest brightness and with me doing some web design with the cpanel. I used to get about 4-5 hours on the battery with the 3 cell.

Can anyone recommend USB-C charger for the 15" ?

Side note- I was getting blue screens of death, even after reloading Win 10.
Thought it was the hard drive, but it turned out to be the Intel Wireless driver.
Told Windows to update it, it did, and no problems since.

DONE with trying to get the battery upgrade.
    Order was canceled
Supplier says the battery did not meet quality expectations.

just gonna ride this system out with its ram and hard drives updated till I pass it along to the kid.
    who will love it.

What kind of temps do you get while gaming?
I did not repaste, but my 8750h floats at 92-98°C (after a longer session). I undervolted core (-200mV) + cache (-125mV) and got speedshift enabled (at 0). any suggestions? (Besides repasting, which i will do when i upgrade battery/ram/ssd; dont really want to open up my laptop like 10 times). how worrysome is 98°C? im aware that the processor is designed to run at 100°C max, but maybe in practical use you guys made some other experiences.

edit: weird, today temps were at like ~90°C. still a lil bit high in my book

edit2: does any1 have recommendation for a TS battery mode? individual changes in power limits do apply globally if im not mistaken? also, in this regard, what does PKG-Power mean? (couldnt find anything in google).. prob gonna play around with icc-max settings, like @unclewebb suggested.

quite a lot of questions :D thanks in advance for any response. regards

WOW, thats amazing and ideal results.

I have been struggling with CPU power limit throttle to 25W or so when GPU comes in picture (for ex during Gaming etc) but standalone CPU testing uses full power. What can be the issue?

There's a few other suppliers who have this battery, did you check with Eluktronics? That's who I got it from.

After playing 3 dota games that is about where I am at. I do have a cooling pad but I suppose I can test this weekend what a 3 hour long session without the cooling pad would do. I have this laptop setup with a keyboard, mouse and 2 monitors just like a desktop when I am home.

Hi All, i tried searching but couldn't find an answer for my problem. We have quite a few of these laptops at work plus the predecessor which is extremely similar (GK5CM6X).

The problem is that when removing an external monitor cable, the Package Power doesn't drop, it instead increases! This makes the laptop very poor on battery and emit lots of heat - 3 hours tops with the 6Cell battery. If you do a fresh reboot however, you can see that the NVidia GPU has not been initialised and the Package only consumes 0.4W. This makes the battery last 8-10 hours and the laptop completely cool/silent!

Idle Wattages in Windows via Throttlestop:
AC/Battery with external monitor: 4.4Watts minimum
AC/Battery, fresh reboot and no external monitor: 0.4W minimum
Battery, external monitor previously plugged in (or GPU initialized by some other means like MSI Afterburner): 7.0W minimum
Battery, external monitor previously plugged in, Nvidia driver disabled in Device Manager: 11.2W minimum

I have tried various power profiles in Windows, Gaming Center settings, NVidia power settings, all to no avail. It would be really nice to be able to get these things to sleep the GPU when not in use. Does anyone know how please?! Thanks!

Just bought this without really thinking - this is the right 4 cell for OP 15, correct?

Edit: Mech 15 is the same TF chassis so yes and nevermind. Thanks for link.

I found out why some people can't get their laptop to go to C6/C7 on idle. It's the LAN driver. The LAN driver that window auto installs during a fresh install won't let this laptop reach C states lower than C3. Installing the LAN driver from the Overpowered support page fixed this for me after a recent fresh windows install, now it only uses 0.5 W at idle. This problem wasn't present with the original windows installation that the laptop was shipped with, which presumably had the correct LAN driver.

OK looks like after almost 2 hours of gaming my CPU goes up to 87 without me using the max fan button. Pushing the max fan button it dips below 80.

So I recently ordered the MAG-15 94wh battery and plan to use it on my GK5CP6Z, what are the chances I don't end up killing my laptop?

i am no expert so i cant really give a educated guess. but i am extremely curious about this myself; regardless of the outcome, you are a hero.

@AyoMayo someone suggested a physical mod of the case or the cables in some form might do the trick

Ok I think I'm going crazy. I think I've just had a second display backlight fail on me. I have the Eluktronics Mech-15G2 that I ordered in march with the 144hz display. Around August or so the display backlight got "stuck" on the dimmest setting, and when you tried to increase it the backlight just flickered. Shipped it back to them and they replaced the display, and god dammit it has just happened again. Anyone else going through this issue?

Yes. I have the same but my is OP-LP2. This happening when i starting play in COD and gpu temperature pump to 87*C or that coincidence. If i add more than 10% of brightness, display awful flickering like stroboscope. I think it invertor fault in display microscheme (but if you have that problem twise, well that strange, i checked that problem in aero15 and blade theme, noone have, only 4 people there including me). I buy another from aliexpress, BOE and AUO make them too, but they send random manufacturer display. They also selling glossy display without matte film coverage like stock, i wonder, color gamut will be better or not.

p.s. i also buying before PD trigger 5.5x2.5mm 20V to 19V and its working with mi powerbank 3, laptop is charging from powerbank. So who dissapointed we dont have type-C charging, that may be a solution.I even refuse idea upgrade my battery to 60wh, because PB giving me around 1.5 time battery charging and additional 15wh do not solve anything.

So probably temp related. Maybe some internal component melted? Did you ever try just replacing the display cable rather than the panel? If so, did that help?

Im still waiting new screen. Visually all scheme components is ok, where i live nobody have due qualification to help me. I search display cable too, someone selling it on ali for 50$, but i think cable is ok. Its maybe not temp related, but when laptop works with hard loading, some chip gives incorrect voltage to screen scheme and something fails, thats my theory. High temperature does not influencing directly on screen 100%.

Hey guys. Sorta unrelated but i thought this sub would be of extra help.

I'm using the 17in brother of the GK5 and i'm getting really horrible battery life with office mode and full power saving settings enable. With the 4 cell batt, i'm only getting around 2 ish hours.

My C states on battery are all in C2 and C3 (most of it) and i'm drawing more than 10w just idling. It used to be way less than that but i'm not too sure what caused it to change. I don't have a lot of services running in the background and my GPU is not on according to TS.

Can anyone shed some light on this?

I removed the whole motherboard from the case before I took the bottom ribbon cable out. That was kind of a pain but not too bad. You just have to be careful removing all the little cables and connectors off the motherboard.

Read my post on page 452. Find and install all the OEM drivers. Be sure to under-volt and also make sure that you don't have MSI afterburner running.

This is the display problem I have. Display backlight basically won't go higher than the lowest setting, and flickers badly at the next to lowest setting. If anyone else has had this problem I would love to know how you fixed it!

This happened once before and I sent it to Eluktronics for repairs. They told me they replaced the motherboard, and that did fix it (for 3 months). I'm sure it was a smaller component that broke though.

Edit: I don't think I'm an unusual user though. The laptop sits on my desk and I play games. No overclocking, no adjustments or anything. Pretty decent airflow, kinda cold room. I'm sure this shouldn't be happening and not everyone else has this problem.

I managed to remove it w/o having to do that - the tape was tricky getting off though.

Hardest part was getting the keyboard ribbon & it's adhesive off the original battery w/o damaging it like others have done.

Can anyone here help me with my laptop C states?

I can't seem to get it to get below C3. My package power draw on battery with power saving profile and undervoilt is was up to 20w the last time i used the notebook on battery power.

I have nothing running in the background, literally idling on the desktop in office mode. I've tried several driver updates to the chipset and LAN (couple of people mentioned it in the 15in forum) but nothing seems to be working. I could only get about 2 hours of battery life

Any help would be much appreciated

Has anyone manage to fit in the 94WH battery from the MAG15?

From what I can see, MAG15 is a smaller chassis (shorter, narrower and also thinner), GK5CN has some spare space between the speaker and battery. So the larger battery can definitely be placed in, but how to secure it would be tricky. As the screws are not in place, maybe some glue will do the trick? Anyway, please report back if you manage to do it.

I remember an old post on this thread where Nvidia's USB controller driver was the cause of a similar issue. Check if you have any in the device manager and uninstall them. Since finding out the exact problem will be a futile exercise, I suggest you do a fresh windows install with all the OEM drivers installed over the ones windows auto-downloads.

The XMG rep who posted on the TongFang QC7 thread already showed us that it is impossible to fit the battery in both sizes of the older model.

i wonder why my temps are so trash. i just repasted yesterday with thermal grizzly and temps still hover at ~90°C for cpu and gpu. am i missing something? (using max fan and balanced power settings in game centre aswell as undervolt on cpu cache and core)

That would be your best bet without resorting to a fresh install.

Kryonaut sucks in laptops, especially in those that have uneven triple screw CPU heat sinks like this laptop. Kingpin KPx, IC Diamond 7, and Gelid GC Extreme are the 1/2/3 best non liquid metal pastes you could use.

I personally will never buy a laptop that has a triple screw heatsink design ever again, it's the biggest contributor to the poor thermals in gaming laptops.

I feel that! My temp used to be better, and I think because of this temp rise, my screen is screwed up now.
