where do you get your data from? i think i bought it because of a recommendation of @B0B (maybe he recommended it for desktops idk + i dont want to blame any1 for my decisions) - maybe it is not objectively bad? why do you think is the type screw allignment/heatsink relevant for the type of thermal paste you use? sorry again for my n00b questions; very new to this stuff

I was wondering if you guys could offer your two cents on my buying dilema.
I've been struggling to pick between a GK5 and a GK7 for quite some time now and this black friday the prices seem to be right for me to finally come to a conclusion.

    These are my options:

    GK5 w/ 1660 ti - 1163 €
    GK5 w/ 2060 - 1333 €
    GK5 w/ 2070 Max-Q - 1563 €

    GK7 w/ 1660 ti - 1241 €
    GK7 w/ 2060 - 1394 €
    GK7 w/ 2070 - 1581 €

I know we should go for the best GPU we can afford and if I end up choosing the GK7 I probably will, but I'm not sure the price gap between a 2060 and a 2070 Max-Q on the GK5 is worth it.

What are your thoughts on this?

    Thanks

I've jıust downloaded it and installed over a clean windows. I suggest you to do the same. Install all drivers given by the oem and don't let windows update to install drivers automatically.

First of all a 15" laptop is the way to go. It's fantastic and doesn't feel like a concrete block. The 2060 is probably your best option, just be sure to get a laptop cooling pad or something. Heat melts internal components in these laptops. It really does.

I'll try the trick with the NV clean install first. Did the chipset update and it did not do anything. Will fresh install windows as a last resort

Many others in this thread have reported that kryonaut pumps out within a few weeks of application on this laptop. It's simply not thick enough to stay between the uneven heatsink surface and the dies. The pastes I listed are very thick in comparison, so they have a better shot of not pumping out over a longer period of time.

also: can any of you guys recommend some good sodimm 16 gb kit? i dont need / want a matching stick because i actually think my stick might be faulty (have been getting occasional weird freezes)

    Hi all,

I have recently puchased an XMG Neo 15, GK5CP0Z with an RTX 2060, i7 9750H.

I'm just wondering if there is any changes/updates you all would recommend implementing from the very start?

There is a whole lot of pages in this thread and a lot to get through so any help would be appreciated.

    Thank you!.

If you read the OP you'll find a great summary of this but so far personally I have done the following:

I have the Walmart OP 15+
    1. 4 cell battery and removed the SATA Port
    2. Re-paste with Arctic Silver MX-4
    3. Added 1 TB NVMe Drive for WIndows 10
    4. Installed Ubuntu Linux on 256 GB SSD
    5. Carbon Fiber skin
    6. Reinstalled Windows 10 on the new SSD

    @ stephanm74

I have the old version of this with a bigger fan, still use it today. I didn't benchmark it completely but I did notice slightly lower temps when I have this thing on the cooling fan during games. I wouldn't say that it made the world of difference but a few degrees probably.

Just did a full clean install with all OEM drivers and clean gpu driver. Still the same thing. Hitting about 15w pkg power on idle when unplugged with all battery saving stuff enabled.

Barely getting 2 hours of battery life

This is pretty strange. 15 W is about what I get at idle if the GPU is activated via something like MSI Afterburner. You don't have that running do you? Additionally, do you have Illegear's gaming center software installed and used it to set the PC to the balanced/equilibrium mode?

Open up Task Manager to take a look at the idle CPU and power usage trends; end the tasks that are using too much and check the package power again. Attach a picture of your ThrottleStop FIVR and TPL windows if you can.

Nope no afterburner or any gpu monitoring software open. PC is set to office mode is should be the balanced mode you're talking about. PL1 and PL2 are 45w on battery and 35w plugged in strangely enough :/

Dont mind the PL limits in TS. Its reported as 45w in hwinfo

Hi everyone, long time no see there...

I just wanted to let you know that I just updated the MEGAPOST of this thread, adding many information and links from the last months (last update was in march...). It's more and more cluttered on every update but I've no time to reorganize everything... I hope some of you will still find it useful !

As usual, feel free to point me any mistake or thing I forgot !

Poke @sicily428 to update the first page ;)

When using ThrottleStop, you need to also use the FIVR - Disable and Lock Turbo Power Limits feature. There are multiple sets of turbo power limits. This feature takes care of the secondary set and allows ThrottleStop to control your CPU.

The CPU power consumption data reported by ThrottleStop and all software does not represent measured power consumption. It is actually a number calculated by the CPU to manage the turbo boost feature so it may not be accurate when a CPU is lightly loaded.

Your idle power consumption number looks high compared to many other CPUs but it does not look high when compared to other laptops using the 9750H. Head back a few pages to a screenshot from @Mr. Fox

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/thr...gk5cq7z-gk5cp0z.815943/page-446#post-10957529

His 9750H is idle and it is reporting 15.1 Watts.

What I did notice when researching this is that if you run CPUID HWMonitor, it will show power consumption broken down into various components within the CPU. It seems to be the Uncore that accounts for the majority of the power consumption. Not sure why this is. It might have something to do with whether you boot up or resume from sleep or hibernate mode. Here is an old discussion about this problem on reddit.

    https://www.reddit.com/r/overclocki...rvolting_question_cpu_uncore_using_much_more/

Keep an eye on C state activity and look for any changes when resuming. Individual cores should be spending up to 99% of their time in core C7. There might be a bug in the bios or in the CPU itself.

Noted on the disable and lock. I've enabled it

My current problem is that the power draw remains the same on battery. I've done a few tweaks and the most i can get now is just 2:30hrs on battery.

Currently only hitting C3 at most.

None of the values look out of the ordinary when compared to my own laptop. I can't think of anything else that's causing the problem other than that it might be a BIOS issue, which is outta my league. You should go to talk to Illegear and ask for a replacement, as you aren't getting what you paid for right now.

Has anyone with a GK5CN6Z tried upgrading the wifi to an Intel AX201 or an AX200?

I tried the AX201 and the laptop would not post. I'd like to know if anyone has has success with the AX200.

hey, i finally upgraded everything: battery and dual channel ram work fine but im stuck at setting up the ssd upgrade. i already read that both slots supports nvme but only one m.2 sata, so am i right that i will have to leave the stock ssd in the slot it already is? welp, i tried that but then my 970 evo does not get recognized (doesnt show up in windows). on the other hand if i switch slots the laptop automatically boots to bios. ahhhh i thought by buying samsung and using their migration tool i could save a lot of work.. do i really need to do a fresh install :(

If the stock SSD is SATA, it has to stay in the slot it is already in or it will not work in the other slot. Only one M.2 slot is SATA compatible. If they are both NVMe then it doesn't matter which slot you use, as both slots support NVMe.

See if the NVMe is visible in Windows Disk Management utility or in the BIOS. If it is visible in either place, open an elevated command prompt and run a diskpart clean command on it if you have not already done so. Sometimes a new SSD will not be initialized properly by Windows until you do that.

on it right now, thank you very much for the fast response! i formated it via disk management utility and it shows up now. if you dont mind me asking: would you recommend using the new faster drive also as primary/system drive? not sure if windows needs extreme read/write speeds at all.

    regards and good day

Eluktronics should have it. It was in stock the last time I checked their web site. Their brand is the MECH-15, but you can call them if there is any question about fit or compatibility.

    Awesome. Glad that worked.

I would use the faster drive as the boot disk if they are the same capacity. Otherwise, I would use the SSD with the greatest capacity for storage and the smaller SSD for the OS. You will not have a remarkable difference in seat of the pants performance experience using the NVMe for the OS. NVMe is super nice for benchmark scores and snappy movement of files, but the impact is essentially negligible for day to day use of the OS.

the new drive is far bigger but also faster than the stock ssd, thats why i conflicted. should feel weird to have 256 gigs just as a storage backup lol.

also: can any of you confirm what @AyoMayo mentioned about some thermal pastes being too thin for this particular cooling solution? i just bought some fresh thermal grizzly >___>.

Have the 17in version but my point should still be valid for the 15in one.

Yep my unit's application of Kryonaut was pumping out after just a couple of weeks. I've replaced it with Master Maker Gel from Cooler Master

now that you have replaced your paste with master gel maker, what are your CPU temp reading?

can you do a quick TS bench (the benchmark tool built into TS), run 1024M size 12 threads, run it 2-3 times continuously and see what the individual max temps you are getting for each core?

hey guys, can any of you guys give me some clarity about power saving with this device? as it is right now i got one performance setting for TS to basically avoid the below 40% throttling to 800MHz and undervolt my cpu a little bit; when not plugged i mostly use game center to conserve battery, because i dont know how i should set up my throttle stop battery profile.. also i dont know if using gamecenter even works when TS is open, which one has priority? can anyone explain me how the game center interacts with TS and maybe share their TS battery profile?

thanks in advance, love this community btw <3

exact same problem as mine. in fact all tong fang GK7 series all suffer the exact same issue. heatsink is not balanced and 3 cores are a lot hotter than the other 3.

for the temps you are getting, what's the frequency for all cores of your CPU when running TS bench 1024?

if you run it at 4GHz all core turbo (after you undervolt so you dont hit power limit), the temperature difference between coolest and hottest cores can soar over 10C.

Constant 4Ghz turbo throughout all 3 runs. I didnt touch any clock speed settings yet.

Honestly i'm quite okay with these temps. I'm on a -200mv undervolt atm and can probably squeeze a bit more. Was stable at 215 as well but i dialed it back. But i'll still play around with the mounting pressure to try and drop the differential even more. Otherwise i'll have to get a much thicker paste. Phobya Nanogrease Extreme comes to mind

can u even get phobya nanogrease in KL? my undervolt is -120mV for core and -120mV for cache. i can't go that low for core. -200mV is really low, which explain why your CPU is only around 85C for the hottest core.

I felt that CM master gel maker is not that great too. initially after repaste the temps are good. but as the weeks go by, the 3 hottest cores temps will also rise drastically. if you were running at -100mV, you'll be thermal throttling now with that heatsink imbalance

Oo interesting stuff. I'll try again later tonight with the - 100mv. Its not ideal but its the next best option from Kryonaut. I'm not too sure where to get my hands on GC Extreme and IC Diamond has scratched my chip dies before so i dont want to risk my warranty with it

May have a friend coming back from the US so most likely it will come from FrozenCPU

edit: Even with the - 200 offset my cores are still pulling about 1.1v. So i think i can still get it down some more. My cache is very picky. Lowest i can get is - 85mv

Repasted with Liquid Metal (around 4-5 weeks ago)

my notebook is the tongfang gk5cn6z (i7-8750h, gtx1060)

note: before i have used LM, i tried to repaste with arctic mx4 and kryonaut but the results were not good.

I have uploaded some screenshots: kryonaut vs. Conductonaut (liquid metal)

I would love to go LM on my machine but it will void my reseller's warranty which is pretty stupid

Buying the old model would be pretty dumb at this point. This thing weight is only 1.55 KG! Insane.

Our temperatures are somewhat identical, the i7 8750h is a hot head. Play FarCry New Dawn and watch it go even higher.

i have tested several games since i have this notebook, but not New Dawn. So far i can tell that NFS Heat was one game which burned the cpu (94 degrees). but there was a 100%-cpu-load bug in the game. as i fixed it via config-file, temps never went above 85 degrees.

but sometimes even in apex legends hwinfo shows a peak of 89 degrees. i think this is because windows is doing some stuff in the backround, which causes more cpu load. anyway the 8750h is a really hot head, which is why I chose LM. it can lower the temps by 10-15 degrees. this is what i needed, if the next really hot summer comes.

Ludicrous temperatures. Usually Windows 10 doesn’t preform heavy tasks when in use, only when idling. I use ThrottleStop and have the ‘Turbo Boost Long Power Max’ set on 45WATT max, this helps. Don't want the CPU to draw too much power when the GPU is sucking up 80WATT.

I firmly believe that LM is mandatory to cool the cursed chip, else you might roast the surrounding chips near the CPU, which by the way happened to me, had to claim warranty once before! C:

    wait what, 45watt max?
my settings are 85 on long and 95 on short. i have copied these settings from other users in this forum, cause i'm not such an expert in undervolting. with 45watt ur cpu still runs at 3.9ghz?

let me understand: u don't have LM and u get almost same temps with locking cpu at 45watts?
