Are you saying that you can run your machine at 2.5 GHZ? Are you serious? I have good RAM on order from NewEgg. If I can run this machine at 2+ GHZ, I will send my Lenovo back and use this thing as my main laptop.

I'm pretty sure it's not my memory because when I set the multiplier to 6x, I can ramp the FSB up to 280Mhz and it's totally fine. As soon as I exceed 1.7Ghz, the stability goes out the window.
I have not had time to research the topic but I hope there is a software solution to unlocking the lower and higher voltages for this CPU. 0.9v to 0.96v is too restrictive. I should have more time next week to test out some games/videos to see if overclocking makes much of a difference.
I still wish I had access to voltage mods. I'm really curious to see what this little laptop can do above 1.7ghz.
At 6.5x200mhz: 4.0, 4.7, 3.1, 3.2, 7.4
At 6.0x275mhz: 4.7, 5.4, 3.8, 3.3, 7.4
I used CrystalCPUID415x64 to lower the multiplier to 6.0x and I tried increasing the voltage to the max allowed (1.075v) but it still shows 0.9 to .963 in CPU-Z.
Ok, have to run. Will update when I have a chance. -
It will probably require a hard mod to change voltage if its even possible. However, I'm happy with 1.7GHz, which so far seems to run remarkably well. I will do some benchmarking too and see if it makes a difference. Primarily I will see if Starcraft 2 will run any better. It was borderline playable at lowest settings 1280x720 (i.e. avg 15fps, with dips to 9-10 in heavy action).
-
Something weird to note. I just got home and was feeling a bit curious so I set the FSB to 280Mhz (at 6.0x) and ran the WEI and it froze. Thought it was an anomaly so I restarted and set the FSB to 260 (at 6.5x) and... it froze again!
Now the cpu isn't stable at anything above 1.66ghz (275x6.0 is stable and 255x6.5 is stable.) It seems I have "lost" a stable overclock of 50Mhz from testing.
Because of this, I have stopped using SetFSB. I think now I'm much more interested in under-clocking this laptop for extended battery life. I won't be gaming and I can't tell any difference in speed between 1.3ghz and 1.66ghz settings.
EDIT: Actually, like wingnut said earlier, there probably won't be any benefit to underclocking - might as well look around for a battery mod. lol. Wonder if I can grab a 12cell from another brand and modify the connectors to fit in this notebook. haha -
I wonder if there are higher capacity cells you can buy and repack your battery? I've heard of pepole doing this but don't have the foggiest idea where to start. I know you have to be careful with voltage and amp output too. You'd basically have to open your power supply before even trying to find replacement cells unless Hannspree is interested in sharing those details but I doubt they know it or will care to share. Undervolting would be a much cleaner execution. Maybe there's a way, and I hope there is a simple way, but I'm skeptical.
I'm still going to run some benchmarks at 1.7GHz (260x6.5) to see if I can run a handful of games I'm interested in. But based on WEI, unless the game is CPU limited, it may not do well. The WEI for 3D Gaming went from 3.2 to 3.3 where everything else jumped quite a bit. I know WEI isn't everything, but it's an indicator. I am wondering if there's a way to overclock the GPU? -
I know it's an old game with little going on most of the time, but portal plays nicely at medium.
-
I love portal. Look up Portal Prelude mod if you haven't already. I only played a little bit, but a great free unofficial "prequel" to Portal.
I have a long list of good older games I can play on this thing though. Just would be nice to be able to play Starcraft 2. Granted if OC'd and on battery, battery life will drain quickly, but can't be much worse than at stock clocks, right?
I've considered getting an Acer 3820TG, but in the end it would end up costing me about $1000 because I'd want to put a larger SSD in there because of all the games I'd want to play, but if this little guy can handle SC2 to a certain degree, no need to spend any more money! -
My "other machine" is an Ideapad Y460. It has the 5650 in it as well. It's on its way. It's not nearly as sexy as the timeline or envy 14, but it was also $750. I have a Vertex 2 waiting for it. It's crazy to think I'll have the Hannspree, the Y460, 8GB of good RAM and a Vertex 2 all for the same cost of the M11X I just sent back. After the M11X fell apart, I decided to go back to Lenovo for my main machine. Hoping the SSD will help with the one issue that always haunts Lenovo laptops: heat.
-
I hear the Y460 is a nice build, but I guess the Acer has better cooling, and is 13.3" opposed to 14.1". In either case, not sure if I need an HD 5650 i3 machine *AND* a powerful desktop replacement laptop. Pining for a Sandy Bridge i7-2720QM, HD 6850 Sager notebook as soon as available. I guess if I sell this Hannspree with the Intel SSD, it could offset the cost a bit for an HD5650 small notebook. I dunno if I want to do that just yet though.
-
Hmmm... Do you guys think the cause of the lockups (for me anything over 1.6Ghz) could also be the ram timings besides the insufficient voltage? I noticed CPU-Z shows mine as 6-6-6 no matter how high I set the FSB.
I was wondering if a higher stable overclock could be achieved by changing the ram timings to 7-7-7 instead within Windows. But does such a tool exist? -
Usually the only way to change timings is in the BIOS. And that could be an issue. Typically though a BIOS will change automatically, depending on speed. Although since these were really meant as a pretty singular build, it may not have support for that. I guess your other option would be to get tighter timed memory. Obviously no guarantee.
I'm just really shocked that we CAN overclock. I've sampled a multitude of subcompact notebooks and netbooks and so many.
First results from 3DMark06 at stock vs. 262MHz FSB (1.7GHz CPU) =
3DMark06 Stock / 262MHz FSB:
3DMarks: 637 / 837
SM2: 200 / 269
HDR/SM3: 248 / 320
CPU: 1116 / 1470 -
What are you guys getting for battery life? I read a couple of reviews complaining about it, but I'm getting 5 1/2 hours, which seems pretty good considering its performance and price. After a couple of full discharges, battery bar says full lifetime is 5:41. I change to power save and keep the display pretty low.
All in all, I don't think anyone could reasonably expect more out of a $400 laptop. Unfortunately, it doesn't look like Costco will put these on any kind of Black Friday special. Although the Hannspree netbook is now just $250.
On a side note, my brother has an Acer Timeline with basically the same insides as these, but he is unable to OC due to hardware restrictions. He is unwilling to do any kind of hardware mod. Of course, he does get like 10 hours of battery life. -
If you're getting 5.5 hours with hard drive, that's phenomenal. I can't even quite get that with an SSD. Problem is you need to run Battery Bar for quite a while on battery for it to be accurate, unless you've done that.
I just set mine to "balanced" but maybe I should set it to "power save" and see if I can eek out even more time. -
Darn it. The cpu fan all of a sudden is now making a pretty loud scraping noise and I'm not sure how long this fan is going to last plus it is extremely annoying.
Wondering if this particular fan module can be purchased online or if I have to contact Hannspree directly in order to get a replacement. Sucks either way. -
You should be able to get the fan model number if you care to take your machine apart and google search it, or at the very least size and power requirements. But yeah I'd email hannspree first and see if what they will charge for it if they will provide one at all. If they don't then I'd at least ask for detailed fan information because if they won't sell it they should at least give you that.

For those interested, I downloaded and did a prelimnary run with the program "ThrottleStop". Here's the thread with links to the download and guide on the program made by a member here at NBR (Unclewebb)
http://forum.notebookreview.com/har...arket-upgrades/531329-throttlestop-guide.html
With this notebook, it allows you to drop the multiplier down to 0.900V from the stock 0.975. I ran Prime95 for a while with no ill effects. It allows you to set the multiplier manually to 6.0 or 6.5 as well. I haven't run a battery test, but theoretically lower voltage should earn a decently improved battery life. When I have time I will do a battery test later and see if it improves it by much. Since this is a low voltage CPU anyhow, it may only drop the total power consumption by less than a Watt. But any little bit helps right? -
Yeah, TS is a powerful program. It was a must for my M11X. Dramatic performance increase (bumped up WEI proc score by .9 and Wprime went from 31 to 24) with no impact on battery life or heat.

Hey! Nice to see there's a forum on this little babies!
So.. I got mine a few days ago. It came with Linux OS but I instantly switched to Win XP... and it seems to have a litle problem which I can't figure out. When you least expect it (3-4 times a day) the LAN freezes. The icon shows it's connected but it actually doesn't connect to the internet any more. Also, I can't repair or disable the connection or reinstal the driver immediatley. First i have to reboot, then reinstal driver, then reboot again... ant then it works for a few hours before crashing again... I don't have the same problem when connecting through WAN (which I use at work).
Any ideas? -
Just got mine today, mail order from Costco as they don't keep them in stock, but it only took a few days to get here. Aside from the keyboard WHICH SUCKS, I really like it. There's a lot of flex in the keyboard in the middle, and often my typed words come out in the wrong place, popping up all over the place - like just now! WHY!? One great thing about it is the amazing lack of bloatware. In fact so far I like everything, but I don't know if I can live with the keyboard. Well, I've got 90 days to return it. Maybe if I tap the keys real gently...
So far treating the keys more gently seems promising - I hope. -
Hmmm, my keyboard seems really solid.
With your typed words popping up all over the place, it's the trackpad. Try disabling it with the center button when you type and the issue will go away. You can also adjust the sensitivity or have the trackpad disable for x number of seconds until after you're done typing. Not real convenient but I've learned to live with it. -
htw - Thanks. I just remembered that I had a similar problem with type showing up all over with another laptop and cured it by shutting off the touchpad (which I don't use anyway). Wow - that little middle key was easy! OK, so far so good...but your keyboard is solid in the middle? No flex, like on the g or h key? Mine sure isn't!
Added on later after testing:
Shutting off the touchpad seems to have cured the problem, same as it did once on my big laptop. But do some of these have better keyboards than others? -
Hi. I just got my Hannspree and it look ok so far. I didn't purchase the version that includes Windows and i'm planning on installing Ubuntu 10.10.
Did anyone do that? I'm curios if the following are supported with Ubuntu 10.10:
1. HDMI output
2. VGA output
3. Webcam
4. 2 finger scrolling and rotate on touchpad
Thanks,
Mircea -
Don't know anything about Ubuntu, M. Anyway, my ONLY complaint with this little computer is the flexing keyboard. Otherwise I love it, and I think it was a great buy.
-
My keyboard is flexing too but it doesn't bother me.
I installed Ubuntu 10.10 and found the following:
1. HDMI video works but the image is cropped on my TV (probably some xorg configurations need to be done)
2. audio over HDMI does not work
3. 2 finger scrolling and gestures don't work. I couldn't find any drivers.
If someone can help me with these issues i'd appreciate it very much. Until then i installed windows 7 ultimate retail and it works like a charm.
The only thing that i don't like but am getting used to is the scrolling on the touch pad:
1. The 2 finger scrolling is very weird (it jumps to the end of the page)
2. Scrolling on the right margin of the touch pad is done in a very weird way (you press on the upper/bottom corner). But from what i understood it's because synaptic patented the scroll as we know it. Shame on them!
Other than the pad it's an exceptional laptop for it's value.
I'm successfully using:
1. Adobe flash builder 4
2. php designer
3. eclipse
Battery while using the above and full display brightness was almost 5 hours (without 10 min or so) -
Hi Thor316c,
You said that Ubuntu makes this notebook shine. Can you please help me configure it. I'm having trouble with the HDMI and touchpad gestures and scrolling.
Thanks,
Mircea -
Webcam worked on some other Linux distros, can't remember which. Didn't try it on Mint yet.
2 finger scrolling as far as I've researched is not working in Linux with this Sentelic touchpad. You do have scroll function by clicking in the upper and lower right corner of the touchpad though. It's not really the easiest thing to use I'm afraid, not is it very accurate. No rotate either. I'd love if someone would share a solution to these. -
....going through finals right now and doing some mods on my w840 right now so hopefully when thats done I'll give more attention back to my "hans"
Great info on the linux install, I'm going to add it to the first page! -
Well guys, looks like I may be getting rid of this nice little machine. I got ahold of an Alienware M11x cheap. Not 100% certain yet, but if I do sell it, will probably be sometime next week. It has stock 2GB RAM but an Intel 80GB G2 SSD in there. I will offer to sell it with the SSD or with a 320GB 7200RPM Seagate Momentus hard drive in it if anyone is interested.
-
-
Yeah, $499 for my M11x. First one was a piece of crap. Dell replaced it and new one is pretty nice, SU7300, 500GB HDD, 4GB RAM. I'm putting a 120GB Intel in the M11x.
-
How do you get the M11x for $499?
-
-
It's got some sweet specs. Is the only major problem the bad hinge? How does it compare with this Hannspree, screen, keyboard, etc? I'm happy with the H., though. Only $300, and comes with a 3 year warranty through Costco. I only wanted it as a backup, until Asus gets around to fixing my 17" lap top - but now I'm really liking this 12" size. So much lighter and more compact than the big laptop, and it should work good with a big extternal screen and keyboard for home use, right?
-
I got my M11x for $499 during the Cyber Monday refurb deal. The refurb they sent me was a piece of crap. I called and complained and they sent me basically a brand new unit. It has SU7300, 4GB RAM, 500GB HDD (replacing with 120GB SSD), and of course the GT 335m.
To be honest, I really love this Hannspree. The screen especially. The M11x in general is a nice solid build, and the keyboard is nice too. I just am leary abou the hinge issue, except after reading some repairs, I'll probably do it myself and reinforce it if/when the time comes. Since it comes with a one year warranty probably will get it replaced once under warranty if needed, but after that I'll be hacking away.
Anyhow, my biggest gripe about the M11x is the screen. Mine came with a Samsung screen and it is brighter than I expected, except the viewing angles suck, unless you're looking directly perpendicular to the screen, it starts to look washed out if you're above it or really dark below it or side to side.
Maybe I'll do a quick comparison review before I sell my Hannspree. I'd love to keep it, but I need to offset the cost of my M11x. -
Hi, I'm interested in the USB behavior of this laptop when is Shutdown or put in Sleep mode. My laptop when is shutdown has no power in USB but in Sleep mode has (charges the phone). This is a normal behaviour for the SN12E2 or my laptop has a problem? I had a problem with an USB device (i plugged in and the laptop shut off) and i dont remeber if initially the USB ports had power when the computer was shutdown
.
-
Most USB ports are shut off when the machine is shut down. Only a select few laptops offer a charging port active.
-
I think the Hannspree screen is terrific, and it has the best viewing angles I've ever seen, at least on any laptop I've ever had.
A comparison review will be interesting. -
Yes, I am very pleasantly surprised at the Hannspree screen. I'm using it right now as I'm travelling the next couple days, because I didn't get my M11x loaded up yet with what I need, and my SSD arrived today.
Anyhow, I want to use my M11x extensively actually before I decide to keep it. I would love to have gaming capability in a compact notebook, but if it suffers from an unusable screen or bad keyboard, or something along those lines, I'll keep my Hannspree.
I'll be sure to post my imperssions sometime in the next week, time permitting with Christmas coming and all. -
Also, the Hannspree is a fingerprint magnet. I got the Lunar Shadow version of the M11X and it attracts very few fingerprints. Really important to me because my kids use the laptop to watch videos in the car and while I push them in the jogging stroller.
BTW, when exactly did computer makers forget that the screen is the most important part of a laptop? -
Yeah, I need to use the hannspree and m11x side by side a little more.
I know what you're saying about the screens. It's bad enough that they keep trying to put 1366x768 screens in large laptops, and hard to find larger resolutions. But the screen quality is really going down the tubes too. Like there's no quality control. I'm all for lower cost, but not if it affects something as important as the laptop screen that you look at all the time. -
One thing they've greatly improved in laptop screens, though, and that's dead pixels. Much less common nowadays.
-
Hi guys i just received this notebook today, nice piece of work I can say, but I got no optical drive and no ideea how to install the OS. It came with a fox or something OS which I'm not very familiar with. I received a disk with both widows 7 and linux, but since I got no cd writer I can't insert them. I once made a bootable USB key which I might use now to install windows 7 but I also have no ideea how to enter BIOS as well
And does it have an option to read from a bootable USB key? I'm asking cause my HP dv5 doesn't have that feature, it only reads CDs/DVDs.
-
That looks like a great tutorial wingnut, thanks. Only problem is, that I have never installed windows or any kind of other OS before, ever. My current notebook had vista preinstalled, and I only reinstalled the OS once with a friend's help cause I had some virus problems. Can I just make a bootable USB key (I once made one to root an android phone) then enter bios and load it? Do I really need to open cmd and type all those types of commands?
-
There are many ways to do it, but the diskpart and bootsect ways seem to be the most effective (like, making the USB key actually bootable...).
-
Use that guide. You obviously need a PC with a DVD drive or the Windows ISO to load the files onto the USB key. It's pretty straight forward using that guide. It automatically makes it bootable.
-
Can anyone tell me what kind of RAM is supported? I want to replace the included 2 GB with a 4GB stick (I am aware of the warranty void), but it's a bit confusing with all the conflicting information : at one place I read that the RAM is DDR3 667 MHz, then that it's DDR2 800 MHz or even DDR3 800 MHz.
What type of RAM can I insert then? -
download CPU-Z and go to the memory tab, it will tel you what kind of memory you have. Specs say DDR2, but everyone seems to have DDR3.
-
It says SODIMM DDR2 Synchronous, so I guess it's DDR2; however, regardless of this, will the motherboard support DDR3 RAMs? I mean even if the RAM modules are different, the mobo should still be the same, no?
Is there a way to find out what this mobo supports?
