I'm starting to eye some low cost Llano's with IGP's. So far though I've only seen 15" laptops with it. I think if they can get it in a 13" notebook for under $500 I'd be sold. The A6 or A8 CPU are quad cores with 6620G GPU's which have close to twice the performance as the Intel IGP.
If my HP DV6z works better than my first one (overheating - others are running cool), I'm sold on the AMD for a laptop and even subcompact notebook.
-
Wow...quad in a subcompact.
You sure know how to tempt a guy. My Asus turns two in December--guess I'll be on the market!
What I'd really love is a 14" with no optical drive (just spotted a decent Lenovo Core i3 but even with an 8-cell it seems to get poor battery life). Keep it under 4 lbs and I'm SOLD!
Off-topic: trying to remember the word (starts with a "d" I think?) that's being applied to the cell-phone (and tablet) pricing model...something about successive price-cuts, that make users treat the hardware as "throw-away". Do you recognize the word I'm thinking of?

@HTWingNut...sorry for bringing up a non-Hannspree notebook, but since we previously discussed the Asus UL20FT-B1 (12.1", Core i3 380UM, 4GB, 500GB, Intel GMA HD), I wanted to mention that J&R just dropped the price to $419 (w/free shipping):
JR.com: ASUS UL20FT-B1 12.1" Notebook PC - Silver in PC Notebook Computers
-Matt -
Actually I just picked up an Asus K53TA 15.6" notebook. Far cry from a sub-compact, but for $450 it's a great performer: A6-3400m quad, 1366x768, 6650m GPU + crossfire with integrated GPU, 4GB RAM expandable to 8GB, DVDRW, 6-cell battery (about 4 hours life). They're supposed to be making a 14" version soon too with same specs.

Also, is the SN12E2 discontinued? -
Hi. I'm considering getting a SN12E2 now that they're cheap. It seems some of you have upgraded the hard disk to a SSD. Is it worth it? How long does it take to boot up? Does Office load instantly? Thank you very much.
-
Hey everyone, I have an SN12E2 that I picked up a bit less than a year ago for just a little over $200 (I worked around the corner from the Hannspree store in San Francisco and got a discount). It's been an awesome little notebook and has done most of what I've needed it to in that time.
A few months ago, I noticed it was loading files and applications much more slowly than it had; I did a malware/virus scan and it's clean. Upgraded it to 4gb and that alleviated the problem somewhat, but it's started to slow down again; it's also having issues starting back up from sleeping. iTunes used to take a moment to open up with no other apps running, now it takes 1-2 minutes! I play the 3D strategy game 7.62, and while it used to have no problems, for the last couple months, it's started crashing. Weird, because it didn't used to have these issues, and I haven't really put much more software on it in the last few months (I've only used about 40gb total, most of it mp3's) Could it be a hard drive issue?
Would upgrading to an SSD alleviate these issues?
Thanks! -
are the vents clogged with dust? You're probably going to have to dissassemble the laptop to find out.
The main issue is, if the vents are clogged, the laptop has a tougher time cooling down, and the CPU throttles (recudes its clock speed - lowering its heat output and performance at the same time) to prevent the system from overheating. -
try using ccleaner and glary utilities. While it could be a heating problem, it could just be something screwing up on the Windows end of things.
-
Knock on wood - mine's still going strong. Is Hannspree out of the computer business in the USA already? That didn't last long did it?
-
No, Hannspree is still offering the SN12 that I know of and are coming out with a Tablet called the "HannsPad". Wondering if it will be cheap.
-
As a Viewsonic Gtab owner, I've run into some Hannspad owners (Brits...or Australians maybe) at another forum. Not to be pessimistic but I think they've been talking about "clearance prices" on the Hannspad. Probably similar to what's happened with the Gtab.
Regarding the SN12E2, I check prices every so often. At the moment, MWave is carrying the SN12E24B7P999 for $299:
Hannspree SN12E24B7P999 Hannspree HannsBook Notebook PC - Intel Pentium Dual-Core ULV SU4100 1.3GHz, 2GB DDR2, 320GB HDD, 12.1" Display, Windows 7 Home Premium (Pearl Black) from mwave.com
Can someone please explain what's going on? It looks like the EXACT SAME specs as our unit (SN12E23BUP212). Or did I miss something?
-Matt -
There seems to be a replacement to the SN12E23 called the SN12E24 which seems to be no different than the E23 but it's in stock at Newegg for $349 and $299 at Mwave.
-
Anyway I put a plug in for you at bensbargains for your youtube video on the impossible-to-find ASUS K53TA. I suspect your fan club will grow by a few members!
-Matt -
Ha, sorry, I just noticed that... lol.
Funny thing is that I don't own the K53TA any more. I regret returning it though. Should have just kept it, but I have a horrible habit of having five times more computers than I actually need. I like to tinker. -
I'll post an update if I spot them!
Speaking of "more than I need" it's time to confess: I saw the Asus UL20FT for $419 at J&R and I had to jump on it. Now I have two really good 12" machines (not including the 3 others!!!). I'll eventually steal the Asus from my daughter, but for the moment the Hannspree is sitting unused.I put it up at Craigslist -- but that hasn't gone well -- just getting Paypal scam messages.
I hate to part with it but I think I'll hang some flyers locally. I guess if it happens I'll have to migrate off this thread.
-Matt -
Hi everyone, been a while.
I have been enjoying my SN12E2 quite a bit. I do not use it as much as I would like to but I purchased it as a secondary machine after all.
I have a question on the battery. If I don't use it for some time and then go to turn it on, it is unresponsive unless I use AC power to turn it on. Is it normal for the battery to drain itself when not being used? It's not in sleep, it is completely shut down. -
Yeah, it's normal, although it should only drain like 1-2% a day at most.

I'll wait for it to drop to $249 again and buy another. My oldest kid has apprehended mine, and my youngest will want one now too.
-
I'm finding it hard to part with ours -- but I don't yet have a compelling (i.e., wife-convincing) reason to keep it.
WHERE in the world did you spot it for $249??? Please post if you see it!
-Matt -
-
They seem to be sold out everywhere, such a shame.
I'll be ready to buy within the next week or so.
-
Yeah. I wish that Hannspree would have contunued in the USA, upgrading it, and coming out with new models. I bought it at Costco as a temporary replacement for my 17" Asus which was in perma-repair at the time and I thought it would probably be junk, and I even thought I might take advantage of Costco's return policy and just keep it until the Asus came back and then get a refund, and it was the cheapest thing I could quickly find that seemed OK as a temp - but it turned out great! My favorite aspects are the excellent screen and zero bloatware and all around adequacy and competence, including 3 usb plugs and an hdmi plug. -
Does anyone know what version of SATA the the Hannspree SN12's hard drive slot supports? SATA version 1, 2, or 3? I'm considering buying a $360 240 GB, Corsair Force Series GT, CSSD-F240GBGT-BK SSD, but it apparently really needs SATA 3 to reach its full speed.

Hi,
New member here but I've owned this great little machine for little over a year now and I love it. Battery life is great even with a 500GB 7200 RPM HDD. Performance is great , etc etc. Love it.
Anyways, on to the reason I am posting. About a month ago I started having problems with fan noise and it would come and go. A few days ago it became more and more constant. It was particularly noisy when running videos and such. My plan was to open it up and do something to the fan or replace it. After doing some searching for a replacement fan or support from foxconn or hannspree I came up empty handed.
Decided I could clean it (wasn't very dirty), tweak it and re-install it to see if it would go away. I did notice when removing all the screws that one case screw and one fan screw was loose. Also the casing for the fan gets kinda close to the fan blades. I, ever so carefully, bent the casing up a little to allow for more clearance and re-installed the fan. Put everything back together and turned it on and played some videos. No more noise!
Not sure if it was the casing, the loose screw or just the act of removing it and re-installing it but either way it is worth taking a look at. Hope this helps someone that has the same problem. -
Good to know TehRegulator... I do get noise from both my SN12E2 machines, but a few blasts of compressed air and all is good. Although if I ever feel like it I may open up and do what you suggest because it does eventually get back to getting noisy after a few months.

I saw that you got an early release of the machine that had the windows restore dvd and the driver CD. would you be willing to burn a copy of these for me? I would be happy to reimburse you for your expense plus a bit for your trouble via paypal.
I contacted Hannspree tech support and they said they stopped providing them in mid 2010. Sooooo, if the hard drive fails and you can't do the f3 restore, I am basically SOL without restore media.
Let me know (I have opened up email from members briefly so you can respond to me directly and we can continue this discussion outside the forum.
Let me know,

They are still available (refurbished) from MWAVE.COM for $259 for the black ones. They sold the red ones for $239 including shipping, but are sold out....

Got one of these for Christmas and I'm loving it. Mwave had the DDR3 version on sale on or just before Cybver Monday (I found it at $124.99 at 12:15 AM, it was sold out within the next 20 minutes, and now they only have a refurbished version up on the Mwave site), and I hinted to my parents it'd be easier to carry between dorms or around campus than my slowly failing VAIO notebook. So far, it's been pretty good, but I do have a couple issues.
I installed 64-bit Win7 Ultimate right away, since I plan on getting a 4GB stick of RAM before the end of the week. I know 2GB is right on the low side of the reqs for 64-bit Windows, and I don't know if the integrated graphics are counting against it here, but so far it hasn't been as smooth as I'd like. Chrome keeps having tabs error out even when I'm not low on free memory (usually heralded by a completely blank error box), and once I've even had a BSOD, something that's never happened to me on Windows 7, even with the Beta or RC versions. I'm wondering if it's bad RAM, and/or if anyone else has had the same issue. I'm about to go run a test on it.
Does anyone know if Hannspree still sells spare batteries for these? BatteryBar is showing 4.4% battery wear, and I've only charged the thing a couple of times so far. Dunno if that's usual for batteries these days of if it's just because it's been sitting around for a while (it must've been, if Hannspree stopped providing the driver/manual and restore discs in my box a year and a half ago), but I figure I ought to pick up a spare just in case. -
I have two Hannspree's and both had 3-5% battery wear when I got them. I called to complain and they sent me a new battery, which also had like 4% battery wear, so I think it's common. Actually I think the tech guy misunderstood me and thought it would only charge to 4% capacity, lol. Oh well.
It could be RAM. You can download memtest86+ and run it off USB key to test RAM. Just let it run overnight and see if it finds any errors. I usually let it run while I'm up and doing other things and peek at it periodically.
I'm assuming you downloaded all the 64-bit drivers from Hannspree website and not used the 32-bit drivers? Not sure if that's even possible, but I believe I've used 32-bit drivers before, just can't use opposite (64-bit in 32-bit OS).
That is a good deal though. Wish I saw that I would have picked up another! My boys use them right now. They're quite young so are very hard on them. But for $125 I could have picked up a couple spares! -
Yeah, the price on these was amazing. If there'd been more stock my brother would've gotten one for Christmas rather than a cheap Chinese Android tablet. I'd been looking at these since February and couldn't believe they were so cheap.
Anyways, RAM seems to have been the problem. Didn't need to run memtest86+ for too long, as it came up with a half dozen errors in the first 10 minutes, close to 20 by the end of the second complete pass. 4GB stick arrived yesterday afternoon, and I haven't had any trouble since I put it in. There were no 64-bit drivers, the only thing that Windows didn't set up automatically was the wireless driver, which I had to set up off the included driver disc.
Battery problem seems mostly to be about calibration, as BatteryBar can't consistently decide the amount of wear between boots. Still getting nearly 5 hours of life out of it just web-browsing, even after replacing the stock HDD with a 7200RPM one, so I'm not too worried. (As an aside, the stock HDD was a Western Digital Scorpio Blue, meaning my Xbox 360 just got a massive upgrade from its old 60GB drive).
Now I'm off to see what I can do with the processor - I managed to milk a pretty great TF2 framerate with my old machine's 4500MHD, but a 2Ghz dual-core CPU goes a lot farther than the Hannspree's 1.3. Not too big a deal, anyways, most of my games are either older RPGs or low-req indie stuff. -
At the Hannspree website there are 64-bit drivers: HANNSbook (SN12E22B8D212), Latin America Version Design Concept(Ultra-Mobile) - find yourself in Hannspree USA
I'd recommend using those for best stability and performance. -
Be very careful when purchasing anything from Mwave. I bought something from them a few weeks ago and my credit card was immediately stolen. This is the second time this has happened to me after purchasing from them. I did a google search of "Mwave Credit Card Theft" and it returned many complaints from others that have had the same thing happen to them.
As for the Hannspree, it's a nice computer, but I have not had good luck with the "refurbished" ones the Mwave is selling. Its a "pig in a poke". You might get one that works, and you might not. Mine didn't and I had to return it, and I also had to cancel my credit cards. It was a big headache and I wished I had never bought it.
Read the comments in these threads by others who have had credit cards stolen after purchasing at Mwave.

I don't mean to sound rude or belittle your unfortunate experience, but there's really no good reason for directly using a credit card on a site that takes Paypal or a similar service (Amazon Payments, Google Checkout, etc.).
Anyways, thanks for the 64-bit driver links. I was looking at Hannspree's global page for the machine, which didn't offer any 64-bit versions. Haven't had any stability issues yet but I'm downloading them just in case. -
I think it's circumstantial. I have ordered a lot from Mwave in the past with Credit Card and no issues. I'm not saying it doesn't happen, but it can happen anywhere.
-
Have you been able to post the bluetooth installation photos at another link? I am very interested in seeing them. Thanks.

A quick google search also turns up literally dozens of reports of credit card theft following purchases at Mwave. Just how many reports of it do you need to read before it stops being circumstantial?
Ignore this warning at your own risk. -
Google "Credit Card Fraud" or "Theft" + name of any online retailer and you will find the same thing. Google spits out what you throw at it.
Your third link just links back to your first link, and your second link was from two years ago. -
I'm thinking about buying a SSD for my Hannsbook, and I was wondering if the motherboard supports SATA-II (3Gb/s).
AFAICT the original 320 GB HDD is SATA-I (1,5Gb/s). -
It supports SATA II but don't worry too much about it because the PC isn't that fast that you'd gain much from a fast drive. SSD definitely helps over an HDD, but you won't get full performance benefit anyhow. I get about 216MB/s read from the Kingston V+100 I have in mine, which is ~ 1728 Gb/s. I have NTFS compression on too.
-
Hello all, hope I'm not too late to the party.
Purchased one of these about 13-14 months ago and immediately upped it to 4gb, 128gb SSD and Win7 Pro (for work use). I absolutely love this piece of kit and will be sad when it dies, but will enjoy it for now.
Anyway, after I got mine I advised my sister to get one. Today she managed to crack the screen, does anyone have any clue how to get the screen bezel off so I can replace it?? -
Gah! Sorry to hear that. No idea, haven't seen any service manual for it or YouTube video. Guess you'll have to be the first and be a hero!
-
If anyone's looking to buy/replace one of these, Mwave's got refurbs in stock again at $255. That's still just about the cheapest modern laptop on the web from what I'm seeing at most of the major online stores.
-
That is still a great deal. I am tempted to buy another because I have two for my kids and have a feeling one of them will break theirs at some point. Hard to find a decent performing no-frills 12" notebook for $260.
