Just adding an update...
3 months and still no noise... been taking it everywhere with me (literally around the world) and it hasn't made the same fan noise even once. Must have been the clearance between the fan and casing/housing.
Still my favorite computer even over an i5 Acer, MBP, and my HTPC.

I basically started on the left of the screen, got my nail in, and then a credit card. I ran that round the outside of the bezel unpopping the clips as I went. At the hinges, you have to pull the silver rings out a bit to allow the bezel to come off. You can then just unscrew the screen. I don't know if this is the official way, but it worked.
It's probably trickier trying to get it back on to be fair because of the bottom of the screen bezel goes under the hinges, so you have to try and wiggle that in while clipping the hinge covers in. -
I too have one, for about 14 months now and I pretty much love it except the FAN... oh the horror...
I had serious trouble with it, began making terrible noises 10 moths in use, and the worst part was that it also had some intermittent system freeze / slowdown (probably the CPU) because the fan slowed its speed almost to a halt.
So I decided to throw away the waranty and open it myself (those stupid sticker waranty seals on the back are just stupid, fell off on their own anyway). I managed to take it apart (pretty difficult job by the way) and cleaned the fan (it had some kind of dirt deposit in it, I removed the plastic fan blades for that) and used a spray lubricant for the central axis.
That worked for about 3 weeks, then I had to lubricate again, worked for 2 weeks and the third time I used vaseline (the kind you use in the mechanic shop). At this point it was weird because there didn't seem to be any kind of dirt or dust in there. However it's been working fine ever since, noise free, for two months now.
Also I'm not sure that the problem is the clearance between the fan blandes and the casing as another user points out, at least that wasn't for me.
I sent emails to Hannspree hoping for a fan replacement part but no reply what so ever... I have been searching for the part itself on the web, it's made by Foxconn, no luck there either...
So yeah, that stupid fan was a nightmare for a while, it's fine now (I hope it will keep doing fine in the near future) but I don't count on it, I still hope to find a replacement fan, because as everybody else I too am certain that a better netbook at this price I won't find again soon, it really is a winner (except the quality build of the fan of course).
I will keep watching this thread to see if anybody has had any luck with finding a replacement fan and I wish you all a trouble free experience with the HannsBook! -
One of mine ended up with a loud fan, I just used some compressed air in there and it has been fine ever since.
It would be nice to be able to get a replacement fan though. Did you by any chance get the part number? Perhaps we can at least get specs and find a suitable replacement. -
This was on the sticker on the fan casing...

Also, a friend of mine has one bought the same time as me, used it less than me I guess, no signs of fan trouble yet.
After searching the web a little we cand deduce that this model has a 50/50 chance of having fan trouble, that's too bad... -
Oh great, I google that part number and it only shows your post, lol.
edit: hmm, can only find info on NFB65B05H nothing on NFB56A05H -
Yeah I know that site, sent them an email for a custom order, never replyed...

Have a HannSpree SN12E2...have no Recovery CD for it.
Anyone know where the RCD can be obtained?
Havent's had much luck searching Hannspree USA for it.
Thanks for your help. -
If I can find mine, I can duplicate it, or post an iso... that is if I can find it.

Thanks, for your help, HTWingNut!!
This post was not meant to put you to work! -
That's ok, I'm unemployed for a while, oh wait, I JUST GOT A JOB!

So, does anyone have any suggestions on what to do with the spare mini PCI-e slot? I'm satisfied with the default wireless (for now) and bluetooth adapters, and I'm looking at this SSD - it's not mSATA, so it should work in the open slot, right?
The only other use that occurs to me at the moment would be to get a cheap adapter to make it something of an internal USB port, and try wiring up a USB touchscreen so that it doesn't take up an external port, the the amount of work and money going into that might outweigh the usefulness of a cheap resistive touch panel. -
I think it's wired for a WAN card only.
And SN12's are on Amazon $329:

Hm, that $100 64GB RunCore Pro IV you found is also available in a 128 GB version for $200. From the description it does sound like it's a true Mini PCIe card, not mSATA. Hopefully it really is, as so far the only other Mini PCIe SSD I'd heard of was the Super Talent CoreStore MV line, which is $181 for the 64 GB version:
http://www.superbiiz.com/detail.php?name=SR64C8MME

http://www.engadget.com/2011/02/23/super-talent-debuts-corestore-mv-super-small-super-fast-mini-p/ -
Now, there are a bunch of "mSATA" cards running around which have the same physical form factor and pins as Mini PCIe, but their electical connections are different, so they are not compatible at all. If the Hannspree's slot is Mini PCIe, then mSATA will not work, and vice versa. Was that what you meant?
I'm not sure, but I don't think there are any laptops with a single slot that can switch between Mini PCIe and mSATA; it seems to be only one or the other. Worse, there are yet more vendor-specific connectors that look physically just like Mini PCIe but aren't. -
I don't know what it is to be honest. You should email or call Hannspree and ask. It could be proprietary. Or if it were PCI-e you'd need an SSD with a SATA controller onboard, but probably couldn't boot off it because BIOS doesn't support it.

My wife liked this one so much, having a need to get a netbook or tablet for my daughter, I ended out buying another one of these - just easier to go with what we know was good. Purchased another factory refurb from MWave Monday - arrived yesterday - $255 with free shipping.

Out of the box, this one was blue-screening all over the place on first time setup so did a refresh/recovery which went smoothly after turning off the wifi just during setup. Seems to be in good shape now. -

Found my recovery DVD, I'm ripping it, but it's a lot of data - 3.7GB if I can't compress it any. I'll upload it, but I'm going to have to split it into parts, and it'll take probably the whole day to do.
-
I just found mine too, If JimBobVII can't get it working I'll give it a go.
Also, if you ever need to replace the keyboard, Hannspree charges $30 + $22 shipping. But shipping is same whether you order, one, two, or three keyboards. I just ordered two because my kids spilled juice on one and it died, but got smart and ordered a cheap generic keyboard protector for it. At least it should last longer this way (hopefully). -
Might be best for you to try uploading; uploads keep crashing on the only PC constantly connected to the internet here, and with this connection it'd take roughly 25 uninterrupted hours anyways.
I can make a physical DVD and ship it to anyone willing to cover shipping costs, though. -
Hi, you think you can host the pics and where to get the module you used? AND CABLE to connect the module?
EDIT:
eBay has a lot of Broadcom BCM92046 modules, is it the thin one or the wider one? I am sure it's not the PCI-E because we are plugging it in the 8-pin connector labeled BT1

All fixed - 4GB Crucial memory took care of it.
Too bad that they ship these things with cheap/crappy memory. For $5 extra they could put a decent 2GB chip. -
Here's a good alternative to the HannsBook SN12E2. $299 for Dell Inspiron 11z with i3-330um CPU. More powerful than the Hannspree, and probably better battery life too.
The Dell Online Store: Build Your System -
That $299 is a really good price for a new 11z from Dell - as it says it is a limited time discount. Can't find even a used i3 model for that price.
Will need to sit on my hands a few days or I may be tempted to grab one. -
-
11z deal is gone...I can get off my hands now!

Hi guys,
I need your help on a matter.
This machine is very nice and after I've replaced the HDD with an OCZ Agility 3 SSD + 4GB of RAM the little thing change into a very snappy creature.
The last thing I wanted to change was to get rid of the crappy wifi card (only 150mb and very poor signal through 1 concrete wall - no more than 10 meters away from the router). So I took an Intel N6200 card which I had from another laptop and put it into this one. So far so good. I have installed the latest drivers from Intel site and in 2 min my laptop had full signal. I shut it down and after 3 hours I decided to open it again to surf the web and...surprise no wifi network was available anymore: windows told me that the radio is switched off. I've reinstalled the drivers, updated the latest BIOS of Hannspree, I even installed the wifi tool from Intel and with no success: the card was installed and ok in device manager yet windows show it as being turned off. And yes I tried several times Fn + F9 and No success. I've tried to push wifi on from Intel tool and the message was that the wifi is still turned off and I should use the physical button of my laptop to turn it on.
Any help would be much appreciated!
Thanks a lot in advance. -
I've not had any problem at all with the wi fi.

Dropped my SN12E2 on to the floor from 2ft the other day and have damaged the screen as a result. An area around the left hand hinge is black and approximately the left 1/3 of the screen is full of rainbow lines and not working. There's no physical damage to the surface, presumably just the inner layers of the TFT.
Can anyone recommend any specific requirements of a replacement screen, such as will it be specific to Hannspree model or could it be a common 12.1" screen common to other manufacturers?
Have seen prices on ebay around £60 that claim to be compatible. Was hoping to get one for quite a bit less than that.
Also, any guides on removing the display bezel to access the screen?
EDIT - Screen is a HannStar HSD121PHW1 Rev : 1 - A01 ED 1.0 -
Hi again,
The problem is that the combination FN + F9 is not working to activate the wifi radio for Intel N6200 even if in device property win 7 is reporting that is working properly. -
I read somewhere that people had install 8GB of ram into it. When I tried looking into it, I found a Chinese site that said it is can take 8GB at DDR2. And a Spanish site that said "You can put 4GB of RAM without problems, the GS45 chipset supports up to 8GB."

Mine is a DDR3 version. I would love to swap it for a 8GB DDR3 1333, can any confirm this has been done before. Or just the DDR2 is possible? Thank you all! -
My machine came with a DDR3 slot not DDR2 despite what the specs say. Use CPU-z to determine memory type.
Also, I believe it can support 8GB with two sticks of RAM not on a single stick, because I believe it's 4GB per controller. -
Mine has only one slot. It came with DDR3 2GB, and I replace it with DDR3 4GB and SSD when I first got it. I have it for little over a year now. Can't convince myself to go with Macbook Air, so here I am looking to get a little more out of it. And the 8GB now are around $40+ so it would be awesome to put one in.

Hi again,
Did anybody upgraded the mPCIe WiFi module successfully? It seems that if the computer is restarted the Intel module is not powered on by FN+F9. If I switched back Atheros module everything is ok. Could it be a BIOS problem, meaning only Atheros module is recognized? -

and FYI, she ended up getting a new one from ebay for about £60 as it was a bugger to find one otherwise -

Some helpful guys in a computer store hooked up a universal power supply to my HANNSbook and fried it...now that I'm home, I've been told the logic board is shot, and I need to replace it.
Anyone know of a US source for that part? HANNSpree USA doesn't seem to have a parts department.
I really love that little netbook. It's done me right for a long time, and I hate to just strip out the drive and dump it. -
Hello guys,
Does anybody knows whether the 2nd mini-PCIe slot (the long one above wifi one) is functional or not? Has anybody add a card in there? -
-
Hi,
Please contact me via Private Message to make arrangements to get a copy of the DVDs that came with your machine. The manual seems to mention there being 2 disks -- windows 7 premium and the drivers disk. Do you have 2 or were they combined into one disk? Please include your email address so we can correspond directly. I notice that you do not have private messaging turned on, so I could not PM you.
Thanks!
Philip

I never heard back from you regarding the ISO. Would you be willing to burn a copy of the DVDs. I'll reimburse you via Paypal for the disk and the shipping charges.
Please let me know....

To everyone interested in the fan:
I took my laptop to a pro shop about a month ago. They guys there could not fix it themselves, HOWEVER! They did find an overseas vendor for the fan. The site is in Chinese, however, and neither I nor the mechanics could understand it. They gave me the laptop back after a tune up and they also emailed me the link to the site. If any of you feel comfortable purchasing from the site, do so at your own risk. Have not tried it:

Hello!
Does cpufreq work under Linux with this notebook? How about cpu freq scaling in Windows?
PS: I have the latest BIOS firmware. (june 2010)
Thanks! -
Hi guys,
This is my first post here. I really want to do something so that the laptop can be silent again. The cooler is too noisy and I don't know how to disassemble the hannspree sn12e2. I saw that in the past, the user "hannspree" has uploaded some images in which he showed how to open up the laptop. Can someone, please, upload again those pictures? Or if someone can make a new tutorial about this...
Thank you in advance! -
REPLACEMENT FAN - £6.31
Finally a nice quite computer again. The bearings went in my fan so I had no choice but to replace the fan. There are not many places I could find the fan but I did find the following Chinese agent.
taobao agent english-The original FOXCONN SN12E2 NFB56A05H laptop fan
The fan cost me $6.24 + $3.70 postage. Came to a total of $9.94 = £6.31.
I placed the order on the 20th December 2012 and it arrived today. They were very good, took photos before shipping and gave me a tracking number. The weight for 1 fan including packaging is 73 grams.
I hope this helps someone else out. -
Hey guys...My Hannspree SN12E2 which I purchased just over two years ago has started to make a very quiet repetitive
beeping noise (About every five seconds or so)...It's fully funtional and there's no indication other than the beeping that
anything is wrong? Does anyone know what this beeping noise is?
I got the problem fixed!!! I called Hanspree tech support in India...
This was a new issue...He googled and we got lucky...
The constant beeping noise was resolved by turning on STICKY KEYS and then turning it off...
The way to do it once fully booted was hit the SHIFT KEY five times really fast...It will ask you if you want to turn
Sticky Keys on...Say YES...At this point the beeping was still there...Then I Hit the SHIFTY KEY five times fast again which turned
the sticky keys off...And the beeping was gone...Rebooted just to make sure beeping was gone and it IS...Gave this fellow praise
to his Supervisor...GOOD JOB!! I had googled for Hannspree and and the beeping noise but didn't come up with anything but it seems
this problem is not Hannspree specific...Anyway in case you ever get this constant beeping every 5 seconds try the above procedure.
The Hannspree HannsBook SN12E2 Thread!
