Got lucky - for what's it worth I put in a couple 5,400 RPM HTS and still very pleased. Much quicker than stock and easier to find - for now, get them before Toughbook gets them -

7200 rpm Hitachi drive ???
Was this drive in fact discontinued because of malfunctions of the spindle (bearing?) due to over heating?
Is the cf-29 interface fast enough to benefit from the faster drive?
Is this an actual 7200rpm drive or does it "bump" up to 7200rpm?
Would a hd with much higher density (160,250 gig) at a slower 5400rpm actually be MUCH "faster" than a 7200rpm 100gig??
Why arn't many other ata-6 2.5" drives discontinued?
These are not meant to be smart a** questions. -
Manufacturers are switching to SATA from ATA.
I cannot respond to your other questions but am sure someone more knowledgeable will.

I think you're talking about the Barracuda 3.5" drives with the 1st gen "fluid dynamic" bearings... the Hitachi TravelStar family of 2.5" drives are considered to be one of the most reliable series of notebook drives on the market right now; carrying on the tradition (& much of the proprietary technology) of the IBM drives they bought into.
Seagate has been plagued with a lot of undeserved (especially lately) negative word of mouth because of a few bad series of drives several years ago which had failures due to third-party-manufactured component failures. They have since been forced to learn the lesson of across-the-board independent quality control; I've been using a pair of their 2nd gen Barracuda drives in a RAID 0 for the OS Volume on my SOHO PC for almost 3 years now; the only time it gets turned off is for hardware upgrades or when Winbloze gets the wibbles (as it eventually will) & I need to reboot. I do not expect to be able to take advantage of that 5 years warranty that tempted me to begin with...

*oooooh... hard... drives.* -

gravitar, thats a great idea.
Thanks for the info guys. -
I finally exhausted all my 7200rpm drives except for two that I am selling now. I ordered 5 5400, 160GB Hitachis from Newegg. They post that they will have 80GB, 7200rpm Seagate drives in on 5/5... I'll try again then to get some more.
Have you see the absolutely ridiculous prices on ebay that the Hitachis have been fetching? $200+... THAT is just plain crazy! -
-
Just snagged literally the last Newegg Hitachi 7200rpm 100GB open box drive.
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822146052R
Fingers crossed some schmuck didn't shake, rattle and roll it before sending it back. -
Well... Let's just hope that the guy needed a SATA instead.... YA big TEASE!
-
How's the performance increase of a 5400 over the stock 4200?
How's the performance difference between 7200 and 5400?
Am I paying a lot for very little gain?
I've gotta make the same upgrade to my Apple and I don't think I'll be finding any more 7K100's. -
I gotsa 7200RPM in my CF-30 (while that is SATA as well!)... so much faster than the stock 5400RPM SATA one!
-
The 7200rm drive is a little faster than the 5400. You don't notice it as much in the CF-30 as you do in the CF-28 & 29. You see a HUGE difference in the CF-28 between the 4200rpm drive and the 7200rpm drive. It is like night and day!
I put in a 200GB, 7200 RPM SATA HD into the 30.... It' a little faster than the 5400 I took out. I'm not sure what I'm going to do with the 80GB I took out... Probably put it up on ebay. -
... their not worth much these days... we (my old company) were selling used hitachis on ebay 80GB 5400RPM SATA & IDE'S for about $30-$40 shipped.
-
I screwed up and ordered a SATA for my CF29 MK1... So, now I am stuck with a 100GB Hitachi 7200rpm from newegg. Can someone tell me if this will work??
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822146047
Thanks gents! -
I'll settle for double the space at the same price for 5400 RPM.
My 100 GB 7K100 was DOA. -
Yes... That 80GB drive will work... But they are never in stock! I have a standing order to be notified when they arrive. I have never received an email! I did get an email about 4 months ago.... I bought 5 of the hard drives and 10 minutes later they were sold out! They haven't gotten any more in since then AFAIK....
-
The line of drives is discontinued. I don't think they'll EVER come back in stock.
-
I thought I got a deal on ebay (found the listing 1 minute before it ended) turns out the seller listed the item in the wrong catagory. So now I have an 80g, 7200 desktop drive. I am going to put it in my kids computer.
-
Jeep... May I ask what you ended up paying for the 80GB drive?
-
-
Dude... You did VERY well! An EXCELLENT price!
-
Ron -
It wasn't a bad price for a 3.5'"
-
I think Rick misread it as a 2.5" drive.
-
Yeah. Any of these drives on eBay are gonna be used or refurbished...
I've been told that one should treat buying hard drives like buying condoms...
Would you buy a used condom?
Would you buy one that someone had fail on them so they had it patched up by the factory?
New all the way now. -
Duhhhhhhh.... Sorry... Bonehead me... I misread it as a 2.5" drive... Sorry...
-
I'm not sure what you guys consider a 'decent' price to pay for a 7200rpm 2.5" ATA-100 HDD, but what do you think of SEAGATE Momentus 7200.1 -80GB- (7200rpm/8MB/ST980825A)? At SGD169, it work out to approx USD125, which means I can pick up 2 units of 2.5" 5400rpm 160GB Hitachi Travelstar (SGD78.00 each). Better bang for the buck, IMHO. (see 2.5" ATA-IDE HDD price guide)
BTW, a 3.5" 7200rpm 160GB Hitachi desktop IDE HDD goes for 66 SG bucks or USD49! (refer to 3.5" HDD price guide)
If any of you ever transit or stayover in Singapore, you MUST visit Sim Lim Square. It's a 6-level IT mall that's probably a wet dream come true. -
I found this website ( http://laptopsinc.com/Merchant2/merchant.mvc?Screen=PROD&Product_Code=HTS721080G9AT00)
They offer the Hitachi Travelstar 7200RPM 80GB Model: HTS721080G9AT00 I just bought one for $80.00 (A little bit more then what Newegg had them at)
The one I got has a manufacture date of SEP-05 so warrantry ends on 9-28-08 according to Hitachi -
Argh.... no luck for me.
-
I would inform u, that a WD2500BEVE (250GB) now works in my CF-18MK4. Absolutly quiet. No noise. And really faster then the original Hitachi-drive. Recommandable! The price was around 70€ here in Germany.
-
Yeah looks like that's the only way to go since the 7200rpm's are no longer available.
-
I was thinking about buying this HD from newegg. I know its not 7200 but I'm not looking to break land speed records either. Will this one work in my CF-29 mk2?
http://www.newegg.com/Product/Product.aspx?Item=N82E16822148073 -
... if you wanna break land speed records, you should be using a CF-30
-
I should be using my quad core desktop(overclocked) with 8GB of ram. But I can't take that to a job site with me.
Thanks for the answer.
