Hmmmm. Independent verification did not include the Gobi 1000 but did show the Gobi 2000 as 04. That is what I have used for Gobi 2000 in the past.

Just so you gentlemen know...I have Linux MX-18.2 working with OSK (onscreen keyboard). The important part is getting the keyboard to activate with the password page.
    Maybe I should write a thing. :)

If any Linux lurkers are "out there"...
"Does anyone have input for one or both points"? O.K......THREE POINTS...

HOW TO ACTIVATE TABLET BUTTONS ON LINUX? SPECIFICALLY FOR THE d1 BUT ALSO CF-18, 19.

HOW TO GET A KEYBOARD OR AT LEAST TOUCH ACTIVATED IN GRUB?

SINCE I HAVE THE D1 KEYBOARD RUNNING IN .WINE, WHAT CONTROLS THE FOCUS. IOW I HAVE THE KEYBOARD BUT XINPUT DOESN'T USE IT. (iow I have the pretty keyboard but so far it only goes on and off...key input not working)

It was probably in sleep mode and not fully off. Unplug it and remove battery. Then replace battery and start it.

Can you identify the brand of the card and exact model? In case the previous owner added a dell or lenovo and it never worked. It would show up but the generic drivers would not work. I had to flash my EM7455 from dell to generic to make it work in my CF-20.

So you are using a Gobi 1000? 2000? Multicarrier?

I never used a sim card for a Gobi 2000....

    Compatible units had dip switches.

I'm normally a bit confused but now I'm really confused....I don't DO WWAN normally except for using gps on 2000 and others.

It it "possible" that the seller was clueless or lied and the card is not from a Panasonic.
That would cause the csa to throw the no card found warning.

That card is older and "may" not work on a D1. I don't know for sure. I try to stick with a card that was originally shipped with the model notebook I am working on. This insures the card is compatible with the BIOS.

There is another unpopulated ffc connector on the serial port board.
I am guessing this maybe where the gps goes, since they are serial interface.
This port will require 20 pin .5mm spacing breakout.

EDIT- Not so sure about this one either now. It is beside the expansion/option port area.
The options are extra usb, fingerprint or extra Ethernet. So I "assume" those are on this connector.

The other 12 pin connector on the SIM board at is odd.
It has .153vdc across pin 9 and ground. No other voltage.

My thoughts are that these Celeron units are NOT retail and were custom built for a specific customer. Panasonic deleted the unrequired options on these custom mainboards. There are many unpopulated smd's.

The first photo is the empty connector near the modular bay port.
That bay has option for extra usb, fingerprint reader (usb) or 2nd Ethernet.
So I calculate those are on this connector. I need a breakout board and ffc to attempt a discovery of the pinout.

The second photo is of the entire mainboard.
The connector labeled BT is bluetooth. Not sure of pinout, but that should be easy to do.
The problem are the 3 unpopulated connectors.
No idea what connector ?1 might be.
I think ?2 and connector ?3 are for the cameras and the GPS. There are missing components in that area also.

If you want to add Bluetooth, it should not be a big deal. The connector is there.
Cameras are not going to happen.
GPS will require effort. Two routes are possible.
One is figure the pinout on the modular bay connector. Then go with a usb gps.
Two is tap on the backside of the existing serial port. Use a serial gps board from another Toughbook.

My 10 pin breakout pcbs and ffc's are at the post office.
When my concentration ability returns, I will ring out the ethernet / usb port beside the modular bay.
I am in Nikon camera / lens repair mode at the moment. Well, I am buying the parts....

    EDIT
The 10 pin breakouts are the incorrect ones. We need 20 pin .5mm spacing.

I've had some good success with GOBI support out of the box under ubuntu, I would give ubuntu mate 19.04 a try in live usb mode to see if the modem works properly. It's quick and easy(use unetbootin or rufus), It will not affect the data installed on the drive.

    @toughasnails

    Blair,
Maybe split all these WWAN questions /answers into a new thread? They would get more of an audience that way. He will probably get more and better answers in a separate thread rather than in the D1 thread.
He has quite a few WWAN / sim card questions in here now. It is also very hard to follow what he has tried and not tried with his posts scattered in this thread.

    Thanks!

WLAN is wifi- different from WWAN

Ethernet and PCI drivers are in the link I posted.

What sim card drivers? Sim cards don't have drivers.
The WWAN card has drivers and in some countries you need the carrier select tool.

The SD card reader has drivers. The SD card is the memory card like in a camera. Nothing to do with WWAN or wireless.

Since you are in the UK, I strongly suggest you contact Panasonic UK and purchase a factory recovery disk for the exact model D1 you own.

To have bluetooth, just replace the intel6302 card with the intel6320 card?

    No that will not work.
Put the 6320 card in the WWAN slot.
Leave the 6302 card in the WLAN slot
Add an antenna of some kind for the Bluetooth.

Did some voltage checks. It has 2 separate chips (6T213LF) for Ethernet on this pcb. They are not connected to the 20p ffc. I am guessing if you have 2 Ethernet ports, they are both connected to the small white connector.

I got these numbers off the 20pin ffc connector

    2-grnd
    3-grnd
