I cloned my FZ G1 MX18 drive and installed it in the D1.
I cloned it because I customized the desktop GUI and did not want to rebuild it.
I made changes to make it much more touchscreen friendly.

So far, I don't have any sound. Jeff? HELP!
Everything else seems to work fine.

One small issue is the Firefox right side scrollbar is too narrow for my finger.
MX18 does perform better than Windows 7 did with the Celeron and 8gb.
Windows 7-64bit was sluggish at times.
Pretty sure the MX18 I am using is the i686 version. I should find out for sure.

I sent a PM but for now, the results of:

    Code:
    alsactl init
would be interesting. It will probably turn the sound on. This is done as user so /etc/default/asound.state won't be modified. It won't remember it next time.

One Linuxer suggests using the Preferences from the speaker icon....(right click) to set HDA Intel PCH and Master.

    sc@sc:~
    $ alsactl init
    Found hardware: "HDA-Intel" "Realtek ALC269VB" "HDA:10ec0269,10f70800,00100100 HDA:80862805,80860101,00100000" "0x10f7" "0x8338"
Hardware is initialized using a generic method
    sc@sc:~

    I have sound.
    Will it last on reboot?

If not, how to make it permanent?
Installed I-nex for system info. Sysinfo did not work.
    Ran upgrade. Now on MX18.2.
Onboard keyboard set to load in taskbar on startup. I can enter passwords now. Sometimes I need to exit kb and restart it.
Resized Firefox scrollbar. Some lines added to a gtk.css file. Now it is more better for touchscreen use.
Later today I will make a new snapshot.

Screenshot of MX18.2 on the D1.

    Screenshot mx18.2 D1-b.png

Need to run on each reboot.

With me working on the sound issue, now I get 2 speaker icons in the taskbar.

This problem I had on the 31 Shawn gave me... I could make the tweaks and get sound to work...but on reboot no sound...
I resorted to opening Terminal and using the up arrow to run the last script

Ya, I have the same problem on my 31. Possible problem with the driver(s) in MX18.x for the Realtek sound chip. Sound works fine under Mint.

My research indicated that the D1 uses the same AC adapter as the CF-31 and other models. 15.6V and 7.05A AC adapter. Is that correct? Thanks.

I scored a used battery for a D1. That means I will have a 2nd complete CF D1. Minus a port cover or two.

Right on Shawn. Good score, and it is always good to have a spare unit when 'experimenting'. :D

I need a power port cover for my D1. I am sure I still have a NIB CF-31 power port cover. I wonder if the 31 cover would fit the D1, or could be modded to work? I will get the 2 units out tomorrow and see if the power port covers look like they are similar.

I got both the CF-D1 and the CF-31 together and the power port covers look very similar. I am going to dig out the NIB 31 cover, when life and time allow, and take a run at installing it in the D1. This won't happen until probably Monday, as I have a busy day today and work tomorrow. Will post results l8r.

EDIT: Made the time to dig out the port cover. No joy as it turns out the cover is actually for the HDMI port on a CF-31, which appears to be able to be used as a PC/Express card port cover on the CF-D1. END EDIT.

@mklym So is it only the power port covers that might fit. I may have to dust off my port cover kits and see what I have left. I will send you a PM later on today.

When I compared the 31 cover to the D1 port it looked like it would fit. The only difference I could spot was that the tab at the top of the outside piece that moves up and down, and engages in the recess at the top of the port cover frame, was about half as wide as the tab on what is remaining of the factory power port cover. I hope that make sense. :)

There may be something else I am missing, but I think that you didn't try a 31 power port cover on your D1. If it is as straight forward as I think it is, you could have done the swap in moments Shawn.

Pretty sure the problem is with the latches.
They are in a different spot. Or maybe they go a different direction.

I could dig out a 31 cover and look, but I am too depressed or maybe just too lazy to put out the effort.

    I have not tried Heartlands.
I was not real worried about the missing cover on mine.
I have not found the part number.
The parts lists I have do not include the port cover number.

If I could come up with a part number, I would contact Panasonic Canada support. I had good service ordering parts from them when I was in Crosshairs.

To me, having a full-rugged Toughbook with an open port is like having racing slicks on your 4X4. Things are bound to go terribly wrong. All my laptops, including semi-rugged Toughbooks and business/consumer laptops, see lots of use outside. The non-full-rugged units are protected A/R but having to protect a full-rugged is silly to me. This is nothing more than my thoughts on the subject of needing/using port covers. :D

Yes they can/have, but being a private individual they look up the part number(s) when they have time not dealing with corporate clients.

Here is what they had to say:
"We do not sell any CF-D1 models in Canada and therefore do not have the cover." Short and not very sweet.

I got another reply from Panasonic Canada parts. Yesterday I replied to their email, in which they said they didn't have the part as it is for a model they do not sell. I asked it the part could be ordered from Japan or Europe. Here is the reply I got this morning.

    Outstanding!

No idea what they are sending but I will post an update after the part arrives. If it works/fits I think I should go buy a lottery ticket. :D

Either remove the cover entirely or super glue it closed.

You know I started out trying to be a wise guy here but what if you super glue it closed after drilling a hole in it for the power jack?
Large enough for a soft rubber grommet.

It's amazing what two cups of Bluerock coffee will do.

I've actually considered drilling a hole in the rear door for the headset jack. (CF-30/31 etc)

Annnd considered removing the door entirely on a CF-Q1.

Enough of this, I'm going to the barn.

Already have removed it completely. It would catch on stuff so I colored it gone.

I am going to see what Panasonic Canada sends me. Should be here before next weekend. I will baby the D1 by using a laptop case for transport until I get the cover or mod one of the mods suggested by you and Shawn.

Going to the garage, at my brothers place. Clean up the place a bit, then color me the same color as I did the D1 port cover.....gone. These digital crayons are amazing. :D
