My CF-19CDBAXVM was purchased several days ago officially (with three-years warranty) in the one of shops in Almaty.
Have anybody any ideas how it is possible to install the GPS in this laptop?
I know about OEM GPS-Kits for CF-19 ( CF-WGP191, CF-WGP192 and RETROFIT FAST GPS-3W CF-WGP192R), but they are so expensive.
Second question: have anybody the Service Manuals in PDF for these GPS-models?
Thanks a lot!!!

One more question: is it possible to install the GPS Mini PCI-e Card into my CF-19C free Mini PCI-e HSDPA PCB?
Some variants:

I don't see how you would be able to do this without a TON of work. Why not just go with the tried and true? EM-408 with active patch. Easy enough to find the pinout.
Looking at the GPS hardware you show... I don't see where you attach the antenna. It would never work buried inside the magnesium laptop!
EDIT - You haven't set up your account with your email address. I have your Service Manual... -
Toughbook, thank you for the reply.
My email is: alexander_gromov*@*yahoo.com (change *@* to @, please - because the SPAM)
Are you specially working with toughbooks (maybe in a Panasonic service)? (your words: Plus - Um... A LOT of other Toughbooks!)
About antenna: in the case with a GPS Mini PCI-e Card it is possible to use the cable U.FL to SMA Female Bulkhead + small hool at the back of the laptop + any GPS Active Antenna with SMA Male connector (for example, http://microem.ru/pages/u_blox/GPS-AntennaALPS/GPS-X-02021.pdf) -
I use already GlobalSat BT-338 and/or Garmin GPS 18 USB, but I would be like to use an internal GPS...
EM-408 is good idea too, I know about this variant also, but I am going to study all possibilities before to do something... -
The cf-19 is quite different than the cf-18
Teo is working on a aftermarket gps installation , he has done this on the cf-18’s , but he tells me that there is a lack of space inside the cf-19’s to do his usual em408 module installation
It might be possible with using the stock gps bump out but I want a gps in my cf-19 and I would want to try to keep everything internal on mine
Alex -
For testing purposes I installed a second wi-fi card in my cf-19 and the card was not even recognized
The mini-pci-e gps module might work or it might not, it would depend on the connections needed
You can see the pinouts when you get a manual

Tomcat57, thanks for the Schematic...
-
It should be enough, to watch this thread: http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=408117 . It's really easy and works great in every Laptop with Mini-PCI-E.
-
What would be the point of installing a gps module inside the cf-19 and then have to use an external antenna to have it work
The external active antenna that you are suggesting is a similar size to a holux gps with a built-in engine module that has a usb interface
And the holux unit costs about $50 us , and works perfect
I think that an internal antenna is the best choice
Heep posting your thoughts and progress, and let us know if anyone on the gps forum that you post on has any input on this
Thanks to onirakkiss for the schematic
Btw : Nice avatar

We have not yet in Kazakhstan 3G, unfortunately... -
-
Agree
If the antenna placed under a side cover has a good enough signal that is the best place
I doubt that the cell phone antenna in that post that you linked to would receive as well as I would want
I need to look at the signal strength and amount of satellites in view to decide on antennas
Can you find information on the radiation pattern of different antennas?
I am sure that someone has an antenna that would work fine on the side
Alex -
It's working also outside of GSM-coverage. I live there...
Only one advantage of this combination is, to get an faster fix, the UMTS-card CAN receive the sat-positions for ur A-GPS location if u are connected. -

The antenna is the main issue for me
I have a sierra wireless mc5725 wwan card Built-in my cf-19

Maybe this variant is best:
GPS Receiver Antenna to thin cable 1.32 to U.FL mini connector cable
Center Frequency: 1575.42MHz
Bandwidth:+/- 10MHz
Impedance: 50 ohm Gain: 27dbi
Voltage: 3.3V or 5.0V
Connector: Hirose U.FL
Applicable Cable: 1.32
Url: http://www.rfcoaxcable.com/antennas...na_module1/li_gps_active_antenna_module1.html
U.FL mini connector is already ready for connection to Mini PCI-e.
Maybe it is possible to open and take away the ceramic case of the antenna... -
Without cover link here
http://www.rfcoaxcable.com/antennas...le2/li_gps_ceramic_patch_antenna_module2.html
Size matters
We need something small ,and there is no measurements on these
Alex -
...maybe the ceramic-case is necessary for the function.... -
I thuink, they are very small...
I just sent the email them with several question. I hope, they can send their antennas to not only manufacturers. -
-
No... sorry guys. I've seen these modules in use in surveying equipment.
First off - you are NOT seeing them with case on or removed in those photos - you are seeing the top or bottom of the unit. The top is the ceramic patch antenna, the bottom is a PCB covered with a tin box. No, you can't remove the ceramic part - it IS the antenna. The active element is a metallic semiconductor matrix deposited ON/IN the ceramic substrate. This is why they work so well given their relative size... I've seen these ranging from 30mm down to 13mm... I'm sure the next generation will be even smaller.
Attached are some pix of a 25mm patch antenna I had lying around. Note that when implemented, these are usually attached to a PCB with the double-faced tape you see on the bottom, and there is usually either a gold-plated spring contact which touches the ground plane near that gold plated pin, or the PCB has an area of ground plane directly under the antenna and it connects via capacitive inductance.

Jim D Grey has a CERAMIC SMT PATCH GPS ANTENNA 12 X 12 X 4MM
Its just a passive antenna but the size is small
http://www.jdgastore.com/index.php?act=viewProd&productId=468
Alex -
What is difference between active and passive antennas?
-
-
An active antenna includes a matched amplifier tuned to the antenna for greatly improved reception in a small package. It receives DC power along the same coaxial cable as it sends signal out to your GPS receiver. Obviously, you have to use a GPS receiver which provides that power, which is why the EM-408 family is so popular.

It's...volting! -

GA-105D is maybe our variant (13x13x6 mm). See, please, here: http://www.navisys.com.tw/products/image/GA-105D_flyer-11222007.pdf

It turns out I have the HSDPA schematic also for the CF-19....
I don't see what the issue is with installing GPS into the CF-19 as the same type pinout pinout should work using CN27 on the mobo. It has all the same connections that the CF-28, CF-29 and CF-18 have... All you need is a 40 pin cable and a soldering iron... (good eyes & 10X visor helps too!)
EDIT.... Looks to be easy too using pins 35, 36, 37, 38 & 39... All together... No hunting! -
I take it that Tomcat took care of you with the manuals? -
Rick
Only the hard to find schematic
I thought you were dealing with the manual
Alex -
Got it... I'll zip it.
BTW.. I have the HSDPA schematic if you need pinouts for anything... -
-
-
Alex... I just emailed you the Schematics, Service Manual and Board Layout all in one ZIP file... Let me know when it comes through.....
-
-
-
Tomcat57 sent me the same Schematics and I downloaded the similar Service Manual here: http://modly.net/servicemanuals/CF-19C-Service-Manual.pdf
But have you any manual for GPS-Kits? -
Alex... No need for all the separate posts.... Just go back in and edit the one you just posted on... If it is still on the bottom...
-
Are you guys are tired of looking for the right size of gps active antena for your cf-19. Ok! here is the link, I already used this type of antena on Cf-29 using the rubber bump as the mounting case and its perfect for cf-29 just a lttle bet of trimming only on the top hat cover and I am pretty sure it morethan enough to a side plastic cover of cf-18 or cf-19. Why I know that, I already tried that and yet there is still have a clearance to bounce inside coz its very small but the best palce is at the top cover. You just only need to cut one section and then pour with a liquid rubber. its like nothing happen. Anyway, I used the JDG patch model antena on cf-18 as you can see on toughbooktalk.com its a bet wider than the plastic cover.

They have two type but i prefer this one. Mostly they don't have stock coz they used the same antena very open. I bought a few again a week ago and its on it way now.

Is this antenna smaller than the JD
Alex -
if you gonna order this antena to this site just tell them "Teo" refer you and then cover your head. Lol No! seriously look for a guy name Demetris Zavorotnichenko. Good Luck.
ohlip -
So, ohlip's variant is best: http://www.gizmoforyou.com/shop/index.php?main_page=product_info&cPath=10_52&products_id=49 -
Yup! its very small I can compare like Dc jack entrance of cf-18.
ohlip -
You guys really don't beleive me. I already handed three pieces of those antena. thats why I can tell you the difference.
ohlip -
-
As you can see on this photo of cf-29. it is inside the bump while the JDG will not fit on it. Can you imagine how small it is.
