I obviously have a sickness. LOL. I've always wanted to be one of the cool kids but the price of admission was too high. List price of $4799. No thank you very much. Now I can fake it. :D. The other thing that I haven't seen mentioned, the Toughbook can be used as a weapon. Then you can surf the net after clobbering someone.

Some guys here combine the two.
We have learned that waterproof keyboards are indeed Jack Daniels proof also. :err:

I can't combine them........after a week or so, I would wake up in Kobe, Japan at the Toughbook plant.

Dude, this is serious stuff. If I'm going to risk damaging my computer, it's going to be over someone's head not the wall. Deadly force is only to be used when your life is in danger.

Someone asked about buying one of the computers. If I sell it with a hard drive installed, Vista business installed, dock replicator and charger, how much should I ask?

Well, remember that time is money. One way to get an idea is to see what other sites are charging. Just to a search for Toughbooks and see what pops. Many businesses out there. Another is to go on the bay and track some listings, and see what they end up selling for. You would want to narrow your search and save for your model, etc. You will see a wide range of prices. Bottom line, is how much do you want to part with what you have. Stock keyboards are inexpensive, and fairly easy to swap out. Let us know what you decide. Take care and keep touch. From my MK2 CF19 with Windows 7 Pro, configured, backed up, and cloned via acronis. Sending to the nephew for a graduation present. Just my 2 cents on a Sunday morning. :hi2:

    i knew a guy that did a 8 month "blackout drunk" .
he remembered getting drunk in chicago and "coming to" in houston .
he bought a ticket in chicago , went to houston and hired on with a company .
he was one of their best salesmen but had to quit and go back home to his wife and kids .

i had to give up drinking ... i am allergic to alcohol .
    every time i drank , i broke out in a drunk .

    combine the two ?
please , one addiction and disaster at a time !
    :p:laugh:

ps ... those waterproof keyboards are probably good in *other instances* .
    however , i shall digress ...

Is this a friend or family member ? What kind of computer are we talking about ? Something I don't do now is sell to family or friends. They want something for nothing and if anything goes wrong they think you should fix or replace it for free  . I now send them to eBay and let them find one them selves.

It's a friend. I would probably need to offer a 5/5 warranty. 5 feet or 5 seconds, whichever comes first. He asked about the one without the battery and missing keys(couple). That's the one I wanted to keep for parts. Another person at the ham club picnic asked but I think I would rather sell on craigslist to recoup as much money as possible. The first guy is my computer go to guy that has helped me out on some serious problems (computer related in case you were wondering).

    "It's a friend. I would probably need to offer a 5/5 warranty. 5 feet or 5 seconds"

    i call that the "taillight guarantee/warranty" ...
when my taillights go out of sight , that is when the guarantee and warranty period ends .

yep , selling to family is not a good idea , in most cases .
if something goes wrong a year after purchase and they bring it to you in two boxes covered with what looks like "finger goo" (think little kids and knobs) and sundry *mystery substances* and you don't "make good" on extravagant claims of perceived (read : delusional) warranty terms ...
you will be the/a SOB .

with most friends , pretty much the same premise applies .
the only way to keep a friend a friend in this instance is to invite them to check on the going price(s) and then you two sit down and hash out a price that is acceptable to both of you .
only you can take into account any direct or consideration based remuneration that reflects *past work(s)* done by your friend .
as your friend is sort of hip with comps , he might be more aware of the pitfalls involved with "used" equipment ...
then again , he may be good with software but seeing him with a screwdriver in his hand might make the most hardened chernobyl engineer flee in terror .

hey , what swap meet did you go to ?
there aint nothing in this neck of the woods .

I have found a bit of a way out of the delusional warranty.....Not 100% truthful..
Anything that involves over lets say 1 hour of FREE repair, is too far gone to waste time and money for repairs. Actually true for any WalMart issue laptop.
"Sorry Buddy, you need a new laptop" .....Then say "I just saw a great deal for refurbs on Newegg...."

Amazing how fast they will spend $350 for a NEW laptop, compared to giving me $50.00 to repair one.

I'm not a complete ar*se....A week or so later I give them a DVD with all their personal documents and photos on it. Backing those up is the first thing I do on any unit I get in.....And I am the hero.......

Personally for family, I just give them a different laptop and consider it love of family....The sooner they get a working laptop, the easier it is for everyone.

He knows stuff down to board level. He set up our new simulcast repeater system for the club as well as the previous repeaters. I wouldn't be pulling the wool over his eyes. I think that is one of the reasons he asked about the one unit that needed extra TLC. I can see prices all over fleabay. Many MK1s. Many with no AC Adapter, no HD caddy, no HDD. Mine will also come with the dock replicator. Some are very cheap but require much to be spend to get back to ground zero. I would like to get a craigslist price and I can adjust from there.

I am also getting a few more but it will be a while before they are in my greedy little hands. Models are CF-28, CF-29 and CF-30. I am giving advanced warning so BE PREPARED! LOL.

man , you lucked out getting it unlocked .
to the best of my knowledge , finding a way to unlock a password protected bios if you aint factory , family or actually have the password , has not happened ... yet .
for future reference : if it aint unlocked , think of it as a parts donor .

    yes ...
if it is/has been "unlocked" and you can get into the bios during the boot sequence by pressing "F2" and then *navigate all over in there" ...
    leave it alone !

the only way a password "gets set" is if you do such .
sort of like when you were a kid and your mom's favorite lamp "suddenly" becomes broken and there is a baseball sitting among the shards of porcelain ...

I feel like I'm in the deep end of the pool trying to stay afloat and you guys are drinking beers while sitting on the floatation devices. The good thing is it has made me use my tired brain a little more. Turns out I ended up with the XP tablet recovery disk when I asked for the Vista disk. The Vista is on the way. I got Streets and Trips installed and had to figure out how to turn on the GPS. This is a cool little computer.

heh ... it sure is nice to think that we have "personal flotation devices" and sodas (for me anyway) .
i will not speak for the others here but i would hazard that we all started out the same way ... knowing jack s. (and his cousin murphy) .
there is a saying i heard many years ago : "think things through and not necessarily by yourself" .

It's amazing that there was a time when a movie director could get away with having four black guys singing to a whole room full of only white people. Small steps indeed.
