Not to make anyone old, but I was born in '91. There's not a whole lot I can contribute to the conversations now, but I am about 29 days away from my first toughbook.
I do have a feeling that I'll like it, but I doubt I'll buy a brand new one within the next decade, simply because I can't afford it. I will always be on a hunt for a newest CF-31 or newer after I've saved up enough money though. -
29 days away...
oh that's exciting...
More exciting than 29 days away from my first OR LAST drink.

In the mean while, I am scared to have students in my lab who say they were born in the year 2000. From a different millennia!

Please turn the water into Champagne of highest grade, and the MacBooks into ToughBooks, then we're all gonna be grinning, drunken, and happy. Spastic Me kills anything but ToughBooks, and do remember, "You Can't Buy Just 1 ToughBook" Before long, that's all you own for laptops. I just went from 1 ToughBook (A used CF 30) to 2 ToughBooks, I now own a CF-C1 also!
-
Sheesh... I have probably 10 CF-30s in the basement... 3 CF-74s, 2 CF-19s, 1 CF-52, 1 CF-C1, and several others where I have forgotten the model numbers.
Yes! They ARE addictive! -
I have to ask this...
I read that I should not buy aftermarket Chinese made batteries. Also the new panasonic batteries are relatively old. What batteries should I be buying? I would imagine the battery in my CF19 should be somewhat old.
Also, I stocked up on 2 extra IBM 16V chargers, would this work? I read that I shouldn't use the 20V ones, or the cheap brand new Chinese made ones. -
Roll the dice on the Panasonic Batteries. Sometimes you can find NOS (New Old Stock) batteries. Just remember to use the battery calibration tool several times to charge and fully discharge the battery. This helps greatly!
The IBM adapter work well for me... Do you have a model number? The ones I use have a PN of 73P4502. A long time ago I made a huge buy for 30+ IBM adapters that also came with a cigarette adapter. I wish now I would have bought them all... I'm down to my last few. I think I paid $5 each for them in bulk. -
panasonic makes awesome batteries, e.g. aaa eneloop pro ... or the ones found in toughbooks ;-)

BATTERIES
Batteries come in different ratings. CF-18 batteries will work fine in a CF-19, but a CF-19 battery wont work in a CF-18.
Factory Batteries part numbers:
CF-18 Batteries
Orange tab - 7.65Ah - CF-VZSU30B
CF-19 Batteries
Blue tab - 58Wh - CF-VZSU48
Yellow tab - 59Wh - CF-VZSU58U -
-
I find it a bit amusing that CF-18 Orange tab has more juice in it.
Thank you Shawn,
I read that from Gentoo install link I updated few pages ago.
Right now I ordered 34mm express card -to-USB3 card -
I will have the model of my chargers when I get to it. I have one coming with the laptop, and one in my hotel, generously donated by certain friends. I actually ordered Lenovo-to-IBM style plug a while back, which I shouldn't apparently because Lenovo supplies 20V.
I often like to carry a charger, and keep one at a more stationary workplace. Unfortunately, if I am carry 2 laptops from this point on, I'll be carrying 2 chargers. -
This guy really did a nice write up on CF 19 batteries
http://forum.notebookreview.com/threads/different-cf19-batteries.778760/#post-10045715 -
yep ... you want 16VDC output ... most all the chargers/ac adapters are 19VDC .
did you get one of those 120VAC/12VDC input units ? ... they are great for mobile use .
those chinese batteries are pretty worthless .
some of the guys here have batteries , or , they can tell you who the real sellers on sneezebay are .
(yeppers , there is no doubt that they will happily tell you where to go)
-
Gilco4020 has 19 batteries for $10, they are almost new.
eBay item number:
152580940742 -
can't go wrong at that price .
better back up to hand him the money . -
Also got a great 30 battery for $20 the other day. Just looked and he sold them all.
-
Be careful with the expresscard to usb adapter.
They run hot and constantly draw power. Pull it out if not in use.
Also Expresscard slot has 1/4 the power available as a real usb port. So don't run much more than a usb flash drive from that adapter.. -
Haha Shawn, I meant the adapters.
I actually have never used Expresscards. I was intending to have it pretty much permanently installed, oh well, there goes $15Cdn.
The adapters I have in the hotel now is 08K8202,
also, I don't have a 12V ->110V cigarette lighter adapters, and I don't want them mainly because my Sentra already has a very weak alternator and a small battery. -
usb adapters are ok to use to transfer the files and unplug.
Not the best solution, but it works. -
Ah, but if you had your solar serape' hanging on the banister power would be free......I still need to patent that idea. (aka poncho)
Joking aside, solar panels are cheap these days. -
I actually have multiple solar panels, 12V on most of them. Unfortunately:
1. I am having a hard time finding a regulator that feeds good DC supply to computers/laptops
- I usually use a powerbank anyways to get through this.
2. With the above, it already weighs quite a bit.
3. I bought the cheapest Chinese parts for under $50 in total, they crapped out within 2 months.
4. If I want "good" ones, I am looking at at least $300, which I rather spend on the laptop instead.
5. There is a reason why I want a toughbook, and it isn't because I am looking to show off... It's because I'm clumsy, and failure rate exponentially increase as an object is held in my hands(on one exam, I somehow had 10 consecutive defective mechanical pencils).Last edited: Jul 6, 2017 -
"failure rate exponentially increase as an object is held in my hands(on one exam, I somehow had 10 consecutive defective mechanical pencils)"
that is what is commonly referred to as the "anti-midas touch" ... everything turns to 541t .
and you are working where ?
i cannot begin to tell you how much this bolsters my confidence level .
there is a guy on youtube that tears down equipment ... especially the cheapo stuff ... it is educational/entertaining :
yep ... he tears down powerbanks too ...
the chinese grossly inflate the specs .
many of the units are truly POS-1 models . -
Haha CWB, there's nothing to worry about, my hands are almost always around my laptop... I just remembered a memory when I broke a doctor's hand when I was doing grip test.
Also thankfully, I never had a mishap in a lab. I am also known to have what some people refer to as surgeon's hands because I am extremely steady and careful with what I touch inside a lab. Funny enough I remember once coming out of the lab for a water break and I broke a Nalgene water bottle when I was just putting it down on a bench. I e-mailed Nalgene and they sent me a shirt and a new bottle with some more free stuff with a sincere apology.Last edited by a moderator: Jul 7, 2017 -
Is there video?
Grip test.....muahahahahahaha. -
She did ask me to grip as hard as I can, when I asked if she's sure, she insisted and crack, crack! She remained calm and said, "well the good news is that you didn't lose your motor functions in your hands, the bad news is that you just broke my hands."
-
yep ... my neurologist told me to squeeze her fingers as hard as i could ...
but ... it was only two of her fingers on each hand .
the same thing with my new neurologist .
upshot ... i am slowly loosing nerve tissue ... fine control and extremities first .
grip test ... reminds me of the "definition of torque" .
