Hey, I just found some random usb cable for another phone: WITH DONOR PINS!!!! Yay!

Now i"m trying to fab up a "port replicator", but am unsure about a couple things:

I plan on only using a usb cable for charge and sync:
Should I tie in pin 6 (usb +5v in) and pin 13 (external +5v)? Or will the unit charge off of pin 6 and/or pin13 by themselves (tied to pin 1, gnd, of course!)?

I assume pin 10, gnd, is intended for mic/speaker, not power?

I plan on leaving a usb port cable dangling out for host. Can I tie in the +5v supply for the slave devices' usb port to the pin 6 or 13 (+5v) (to act as the power for the host usb port)? Did that make sense?

    TIA!

    &
    AND, I DISAGREE!
I hooked up everything, and when plugged into a usb charger (not a computer) it would not charge. So, I shorted pin6 and 13 together, and ViOla!

Old MS mouse usb cable, donor usb extension (for "host" receptacle), old RadioCrack 3.5mm adapter, some solder, and aggrivation, and BAM!

Charges from ac/usb charger, pc usb, sync, and USB HOST! I'm looking into drivers now.

I never reply in the time, but the short on pin 6 and 13 is still there on mine, and it works well

    POSSIBLE DRIVERS: (currently personally untested)

    Deje's Drivers
    (mouse and mass storage)
RATOC drivers are for one of thier cf to usb host controller cf cards. I'm under the impression they work without the card?? look around, you want to dl the cfu1 or cfu2 software. Mass storage, cd, and more? I've also read that you want to extract their files, and install the drivers manually. Google it. I'll report my experience back later...

Twin Paradox also makes a cf to usb card. I only found it online. Don't know much about it, but the drivers might be good to have. They claim printing, mouse, kb, etc...

There is also a mass storage driver from a company called Anypak. They no longer support wm2003, and you will have to source the driver from somewhere ;). Start here(google search).

Microsoft Development also has some good info on USB host mode for ce.net. (ce.net 4.2= WM2003)

FTD also has some drivers and info. They have a serial driver for usb, might be good for those problematic GPS's I keep reading about (serial bridge).

Other than that go google ""your device of choice here" wm2003 usb driver"

    Hope it helps!

Hi there !! I need info about CF P2 signal quality. I have bought two of these (no wi-fi models, type P2T1HBF7E) because I thought that they had a good aerial signal (on GPS or GPRS), but both (they seems in like new conditions from Centrica UK) are very poor on signal strenght (with gps/gprs Vodaphone in Italy), they shows 1 or 2 segments on the radio bar in the better condition, VS ktek 9100 show 4/5, and my wife cell Nokia at Full Signal also in basement !! Are unlocked. Who has made comparative Signal Strenght tests? Helps are apreciated.

    ---------------
CF-18 Mk3 original WiFi, Gsm/Gprs/Edge&Bluetooth, GPS, third party internal DVB-t, 64Gb SSD Slc, solar cell, led illuminator for keyboard, GREAT !!!
    2 x CF-P2 with poor signal !!

Thanks, What sort of wireless router are you using yours with, mine will work with my parents which is linksy, I think, but won't work with mine at home which was supplied by Virgin, I was just wondering if you would know why.

Does anyone know how to use windows CE 5.00 platform builder?

I have problems with some older wifi cards working with newer routers (even when you try different security protocols, or no protocols). I flashed my linksys with dd-wrt, it expands your router's capabilities alot.

Don't know about the platform builder.....

    Thanks for that.

I've been trying to connect a gps reciever via bluetooth, but the bluetooth manager keeps throwing up an error message when I connect. it says "BM error 0x2d - ERROR_MALFORMED_PACKET." does anyone know how to sort this, or is it a problem with the gps reciever?

Is USB host using same pins as usb data cable?

Another question about GPS. I wonder if this phone has anything of GPS build in.
I mean. If connecting of receiver (external anthena) would be enough to make it work. Maybe USB receiver could work with it - planty of them on ebay.

ahh, but not everyone is so inclined.... ;)

I do home improvements and new construction for a living; I don't work for people who do it themselves, I work for people who A)don't have time B)don't know how or C)don't want to do whatever it is in question.

Remember, you're also not gonna pay me to come out and turn a screw, you're paying me to know which screw to turn.

    IMHO.

I don't know if anyone can help with my CF-P2 problems that I'm having.

I've got two ex-Centrica models that keep "waking up", apparently, randomly after I've powered off.

The things I've tried are outlined on this thread...

    http://forum.notebookreview.com/panasonic/512386-cf-p2-british-gas-version-21.html#post7237794

... and no, enabling/disabling the wake up events didn't work and it can happen with no button being pressed.

Any ideas before I test their ruggedness by throwing them against a wall ;-)

Hmm. Is the phone roaming by any chance? I know mine wakes up when it roams off of its home network. It could also be another wakeup event generated by the GSM module when its received commands from the network.

See what it does without a SIM card and report back.

Hurrah! That looks to be the answer. I've tried an Orange sim in one and no sim in the other, in place of my usual Virgin sim and both switch off and stay off, with negligible battery use.

Where does this leave me though? In need of a new phone or new sim/network? Or is there a phone setting that will stop Virgin/T-Mobile roaming all the while?

Thought so. My cf-p2 gets woken up when I enabled roaming on the orange/t-mobile partnership.
As a hackish hack solution, go into settings>phone>network and select preferred networks. Under there, untick the networks that your home network may roam to, and select ok. (Leave your home network ticked) If that still doesnt work, try setting network selection to manual - and if you're still not having any luck, try contacting your operator to get roaming services disabled on your sim card.

Windows CE (/Mobile) is a completely integrated operating system, this means that the kernel and all the drivers are packed into one binary image.

All the Windows CE versions, ever, are made by the owners of the design.
This is why the revision numbers (Settings->About-> "Build 15077.3.0.0") are always made by the manufacturer.
I've never seen anyone on xda-developers dodging that bullet.

So, unless Panasonic decides to buy a new version from Microsoft (send all the data and get back a special custom MSDOS.SYS for your phone), all the images that can be made for this phone will be "Build 15077.3.0.0".

Unless somebody finds some other Intel PXA device with incredibly similar hardware that just might run. But that usually only happens on devices like HTC that are sold by the millions not just to British Gas.

Same deal with host USB. You need total total total control over your USB port, if the chipset supports it, good luck getting through Microsoft HAL.

For these dreams to come into reality at the least start with an Android device, which runs Linux as a kernel. It's generally known that Dalvik VM (Android as you know it) runs on a wide variety of Linux kernels.

Only the phone manufacturers won't (ever) release their information about the phone, they shouldn't, because there are numerous patents and (US/EU) export laws for encryption.
Not even the Nokia N900 allows distribution of the binary phone driver and that's the best documented phone platform I've ever seen.

    /rant

I like the phone, although I keep being amazed by it's sheer size.
I was expecting to find a WiFi card, too bad there is none.

Has anybody had any luck finding one?
Or maybe an example of an SDIO card that fits with the lid shut?

One more thing I'm amazed by is the lack of a hands-free option in the dialer, could it be possible to switch a conversation to the speaker on the back?

Like any other WM phone I've ever had, there's a very fine line between on and suspend (/off). Will have to get used to the option without backlight. Though it is actually possible to play audio with the device suspended, this has caused me quite some headaches before.

And remember, if your Windows CE device ever gives up on you, just put it in a nice and dry space, charge it for a day with the stock charger and reboot it three times.
After that nothing can go wrong.

I asked Panasonic if they'd kindly slip a BSP my way a while ago when I wanted to get Windows CE6 running on my CF-P2. Unfortunately Panasonic declined.

The WiFi wasn't a card or anything, unfortunately it was a chip soldered to the mainboard. Its in the schematics if you're interested, but good luck sourcing down all the parts.
What was included however, was support for Pegasus based WiFi devices in the system image, so any SDIO compatible card based on the Pegasus chipset should theoretically work straight away with the CF-P2, although I don't own such a creature so I can't confirm this.
Since a full-sized SD fits in the slot quite nicely with the door shut, you might get away with a MiniSD sized SDIO wifi card, with a converter to bring it up to full size. I saw plenty of ebayers last year selling such cards.

As for your point about handsfree, I'd recommend you check those schematics because I've got a suspicion that the GSM board hooks straight into the speakers via minimal components and barely touches the system - your switch idea sounds viable. Hey, I might even break out my soldering iron over the weekend and see.

    Good luck!

    @lxsys:
I don't think Mickeysoft would approve either, with their WP7 in the pipelines...

I think you misunderstood me on the switching to hands-free. On the WM5 devices I'm familiar with, there's an in-call screen for the dialer. And there's a hands-free button right next to the note and mute button which switches the audio to the external speaker and disables the ACG muting on the microphone.

But yes, I'm interested in the schematics, you have them you say?

PS. Please don't just quote the previous post, never quote complete posts.

    @tkteun

Hmm, it has been a while since I played around deeply with my CF-P2, but taking a look at the block diagram here, whilst its not rock solid proof that I'm correct, it shows the Siemens MC55 board with a rough connection to the "Mic/Amp/Speaker".
From what I'm aware, the CF-P2 doesn't have the usual Qualcomm culprits, instead Panasonic opted for using a Siemens module. The advantages of that would be you just have to chuck a few bits of serial here and there to the MC55, and its doing stuff. The usual suspects would require somewhat more effort to integrate.

Yes, I have the schematics. PM me your email, or preferred upload site if you're interested in having a look.

No, I wasn't scared of seeing a Qualcomm on Matsua premises... :)

But they could've used a Ti OMAP platform, more like my old HTC Wizard. Wouldn't match the speed of an Intel, but it would definitely reduce the amount of circuitboards in this device.
Well, it's nice knowing I'm actually using a trusted Siemens once again, too bad quality and marketing never mix.

But this would also explain the low in-call volume people keep having.

PS. Hmm... Is it me or is the PM option very well hidden on this forum? Maybe because I'm a 'n00b' I'm not allowed?

I just took my P2 with me as a primary phone for a week, some points:

    - Although my battery is quite alright (48hrs standby on a 30 minutes sync schedule) my backup batterypack is dead. After pulling my battery if I'm lucky it will hold settings for about 10 seconds or it's back to full reset into 1-1-2006.

    - Activesync and the gmail exchange server (m.google.com) have never worked better, now even with email!

    - I installed Opera mini (m.opera.com), have yet to try ucWeb and uzard web. But you definitely need a proxied browser! There's just not enough bandwidth and processing power to view even the mobile sites.

    - I don't know why it has to switch on all the time! I think it's a WinMo fail that just doesn't allow activesync to do it's thing WITHOUT switching on the backlight. I've got it on a tight 1min. timeout and immediate locking with a passcode to prevent calling people and making random calendar events in my pocket but I still need a good locker.

    - I installed Wisbar Advanced, with mixed feelings, but it's alright. It makes a nice start-menu, with submenus. It turns the top row of pixels into a 1px battery bar. And most importantly, it shows the open tasks as icons in the start bar so you don't have to go to settings->memory->running tasks.

Now I still want the HTC dialer with the T9 contact search function directly in the dialer. In the mean time: Make backups!!!

PS. I did some video benchmarking, the results were pretty nice: http://forum.mobilism.org/viewtopic.php?f=10&t=51558&p=867246#p867246

Just got one of the ex British Gas ones off ebay. Came partly crippled, Bluetooth was disabled and couldn't be enabled but got the defaullt image off the Toughbook Wiki and it's now working fine - I needed it to support my Vehicle Kit which is bluetooth and built into my stereo.

Got this to replace my Sonim XP3 which has developed the crackling problem on transmit and receive. Hopefully this one will last a bit longer plus it's nice to have Windows Mobile again as the Sonim user interface is just rubbish.

So now my tally of Toughbooks is increased by 1 - now got a CF-28 MK3, a CF-07, a CF-51 and now the CF-P2. Need to stop buying now, running out of space.

    Tkteun.

For the locker, just set the resume so that it doesn't resume on any of the options. It will only switch on with the power button then - I did spend time looking for a "lock" function like in WM5 and later but it doesn't have that.

    Cheers
    Andy
