How does the 3.5mm microphone/headphone combo port work exactly? I have a Steelseries Flux-Pro it and comes with a single 3.5mm input to 2x 3.5mm plug. Basically 1 for mic and 1 for sound, will my headset still have mic functions if I were to just plug in the 3.5mm jack alone?

It is a combined jack, the same as a cell phone. I use Razer Blacksharks with my Blade and Edge.

Yup, your single 3.5mm input into a 3.5mm audio/mic jack will allow both the audio and the mic of the headset to function. I never realised how convenient this was until I got a Razer Electra (I still think it should come with an audio spitter just like the Kraken Pro, imo). I'm currently using a Kraken Pro with the splitter to my laptop. Another reason I can't wait for my Blade :)

Segment from IGN's Alienware M14 review concerning fan noise vs. Razer:

Other less desirable elements pervasive in the gaming laptop realm and carried over to the Alienware 14 include a fairly noisy fan system. During gaming sessions, the fans run at full blast, drawing cool air from vents on the bottom and blowing it out the back. This is a stark contrast to the Razer Blade, which generates a fraction of the noise. But in exchange for the constant buzz of the fans, the Alienware 14 maintains a cool surface temperature for lap use

By surface, I wonder if they meant the keyboard surface or the bottom surface. I don't really see the relevance with the keyboard surface for lap use, lol.

Although, to be honest, speaking from my brother's M14, that model's temperature has a lot, and I mean a lot, to be improved on, in my opinion. The heat on both surfaces is crazy for his unit now. Hope my unit can convince him to get the 14' Blade too =P

John, thanks for the great info about the Blade 14. I am most curious about the battery life for normal office tasks n light surfing. I would be happy if it can squeeze 5 hours.

only crazy people would block their vents, thus it doesnt matter if the bottom gets hot, since thats where the vents are.

i haven't run extensive tests for all day office use. will see what i can do. just always on network, 30-40percent backlight (plenty bright!), kb lights off (mine don't work anyway), and word processing, email and internet browsing ok? will give you a guesstimate later tonight or tomorrow.

heat is important, but where the heat is localized is more important. as i've said, the hotttest temps are located in the very back of the blade 14 in the middle, b/w the two fans. when on my lap i keep the blade balanced on my legs with the fans unblocked on the inside of me legs. the outer most sides of the bottom and the bottom front stay relatively cool. The hot air from the fans is blown upwards towards the screen primarily. so you don't get hot hair blowing on you at all. the top of the blade gets hot as well b/c of this, but only the very back of the unit, again not near the keyboard or trackpad.

Agree, they did bring up lap use though, which from my understanding would make the bottom surface relevant as well.

I'm assuming that laptops have a small gap between vents and hard surfaces to keep the vents from being blocked right? They only get blocked on soft surfaces that occupy this gap?

    That's some skills there.

I feel razer could take ANOTHER page from Apples book and put some intakes on the side and back of the notebook. By all means keep the bottom intakes for gaming sessions but also include some side intakes for those times we are just watching youtube on the couch.

PS. Not saying apple owns the right to these component placements or that they even did it first. But they did articulate it with beautiful clarity, in a way that is memorable to people so everyone think they did it first......thats the trick with apple, they dont copy they steal. So anyone who comes after them looks like they are copying even though it is simply something that makes sense. I love it that Razer is also thinking about how they articulate their ideas and designs to the buyers. Not jus ticking up engineering accomplishments like MSI and gigabyte. Boom! steel series keyboards-tick. Boom 4 hDDs-tick. Boom-swappable optical drive. Now they have to buy it?

the problem with the m14x is that half of the bottom is just vent area.

they have a small gap due to the feet against hard surfaces. however usually one of the best way to improve the cooling is just to raise the notebook a little bit
they really could, I think it was a nod towards we are not copying that much your exterior design, though I hardly see a law suit incoming, the pc business of apple aint their main focus, the iOS devices are

Apple shouldn't sue Razer if they are planning to do it. I don't believe they will though, as Kara points out.

Instead of suing them for a bit copy, they should be proud of making a brilliant example of laptop design.

Steve jobs admits some or even most of apple's ideas came from other sources, like Xerox PARC. But what apple does with these ideas is apple's genius.

I think Razer can do the same. They shouldn't take the approach that 'if we do this then it will look like we're copying'. A good idea is only 5% of the work.

Do any 17' Blade or future Blade Pro owners have experience with using one together with a notebook cooler? Looking to get one and would appreciate any input.

In other news, I JUST GOT AN EMAIL THAT MY BLADE HAS SHIPPED! =D

Nice, thanks for the really good review!

I might go with this cooler if ever I do decide to get one. I really like the looks and design of it, especially with how it matches with the Blade. Honestly, I don't want to ruin the beauty of having a Blade with a really industrial looking cooler. Whether it helps slightly or not, it still does anyway.

So in positioning the fans for the U3, I just refer to that photo of the R2 Blade components? Place the fans on the CPU, GPU and HDD accordingly?

Where ever the hotspot is i suppose, maybe in the middle where the CPU and GPu are located. The 3rd fan was useful in the M18x and other laptops with more than 2 coolers.

hfm is totally right : this is Apple Retina Macbook Pro. You can see it is written "Designed by Apple in California [bla bla bla etc]". And the exterior is light grey aluminium. So this is definitely a rMBP, and not the Razer Blade 14.

Can you tell me about the intergrated webcam and speakers? How good are they? Next to gaming I would like to use it as my daily driver, so that also means Skype sessions. Thank you for your answers in advance. I'm also curious about fan noise while idle and under load as I'm (sadly) sensitive to noise.
