I didn't get the Alienware for several reasons. I've been following the 17R4 owner's thread for quite awhile and while people thought the issues were fixed, it seems like there are still constant problems with random units showing very high temps and light bleed on the display and the core temps still seem to be uneven despite a supposed fix being implemented.
The size is also a factor as the 17R4 is a tight fit into my backpack because of the increased depth this year. I don't want to have to shove it in there every time and probably cause premature wear on my backpack. I travel a lot, so this would be a daily thing for about 6 months a year.
Aesthetics are part of it as well. I don't think the Aorus stands out quite as much as a gamer laptop as the Alienware does, with the Alienware being lit up like a spaceship and the really angular design.

Who says 125mv is maximum offset with TS?
Or You mean -125mv is max for the low binned chips?
-
The range default is set to 125 for limit, if you want to go further you can select 250 or 1000 as your limit. Has nothing to do with the chip, and I don't really see any need for pushing the undervolt any further.
-
I know. I only responded on this statement... " Max. Undervolt with TS is -125"
6700hq is fully locked, but max CPU under voltage will allow the GPU headrom for lower temperature due the shared pipes/heatsink. Pascal performs better with lower temp as you probably should know. But low binned chips does not have much headrom for decent under voltage

Hmm ok but those issues can be completely fixed, it is not a design flaw anymore on 2017 units. The remaining differentials are only to do with poor assembly which you won't have to worry about if you buy from hid evo.
The lights can be completely switched off. It's actually very discrete for a gaming laptop *cough* MSI... and exceptionally powerful and well built

I'm not sure HID can do much about the persistent light bleed issues (I don't think they are taking bezels off and trimming down pressure points), and they definitely can't make it fit better into my backpack.

Erm, then why do 1070 laptops beat it with an OC? Yeah, no. That's not a real 1080 in terms of performance.
iunlock likes this. -
because it's overclocked...lol.. stock 1070 desktop card is around 17k GPU score. Stock 1080 is around 21-22k. Just by saying something beating with an OC shows you know nothing. That's like asking how come a cheaper tuned car is beating a stock factory car.Blazertrek50 and Gear332 like this.

Okay, why is the RBP 3000-4000 lower than it should be? Oh I know, cause it's gimped.
-
oh god no, a OCed 1070 cannot beat a well cooled 1080 at stock, but the "pro" 17 isn't very well cooled. The cooling is slowing the 1080 down, just deal with the fact that the "pro" 17 is cooled badly.
-
RBP is 19000 on firestrike no OC. 21000-21000-10% = 18900. Dunno where you're getting 3-4000..lolBlazertrek50 and Gear332 like this.
-
Can't beat a well cooled desktop 1080; it's still a mobile GPU even though nvidia toook awhile the mobile name of it. Mobile GPUs were already said to be underperforming compared to desktop ones by 10% and it's doing that
-
don_svetlio In the Pipe, Five by Five.
Some users reporting 17.5K. Others 18K - so yeah. -
I 100% guarantee you those users have gsync/vsync on and other settings in NVCP set incorrectlyBlazertrek50 likes this.
-
yes mobile are worse than desktop, but a 1070 laptop with good cooling and OCed can beat a "pro" 17, so there is no way around the fact that the cooling in a "pro" 17 is bad
-
It beats it with an OC. Doesn't count. Also you're probably factoring the overall score of firestrike; which I'm pretty sure the laptop you're comparing it to is an unlocked processor. My friend has an Asus ROG with a 1070 +6700HQ and he scored overall 12k with it
-
Why doesn't OC count? Is it because the "pro" 17 has such terrible cooling that the 1080 cannot boost well?Last edited by a moderator: Feb 25, 2017

Because it's overclocked lol. You can't compare a stock card to an overclocked card. Where is your logic? Overclocked means tuned; it's like comparing a tuned sports car that you invest $10k in to a factory car that cost 10k more. The tuned one is more than likely going to be faster because it's tuned.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 25, 2017

An Alienware 15/17 with the newer revision heatsink will perform better than the Blade 17.
FYI that revision is just a thermal pad placement change on top of the CPU chokes.
The Alienwares really shine when you take the time to properly repaste with liquid metal.
It's not perfect, but an Alienware system has a lot of potential.
The Blade Pro? Not so much.iunlock, Beemo and don_svetlio like this. -
Even Asusbook "without" OC'd 1070 graphics is on par with RazerBlade. You can clearly see the <fully locked> BGA Intel i7-6700hq trash hamper the performance.
iunlock and don_svetlio like this. -
It's not on par..it's a whole 10% difference. And the one that is on par has a 6820HK which is miles better than a 6700HQ. So the limiting factor is ovviously the CPU which no one is doubting . The GTX 1080 with the MSI is about 10% better which makes sense because of the processor.
-
I don't know what you call 104.9 vs. 104.9 fps(1070 vs. 1080). But results is results!! And the fully locked [email protected] filthy, will be the bottleneck in newer games. The difference you can see above in games, will only increase as the time goes on. The so called unlocked BGA 6820hk filth is pure trash, but 6700hq is the metal in the bucket!! Maybe beaten by 6300hq or the new low entry Kaby 7300hq. Intel scam people with their low binned trash!! And the OEM's isn't much better, as they put this in all their laptops!!Last edited by a moderator: Feb 25, 2017

I agree, seeing the temp results after repaste and readjustment of thermals pads seems to do the trick and already surprisingly cooler, how much more if bending the CPU arm or perhaps AW replaces the uneven heat sinks and have a separate heat sink for the GPU and CPU...AW probably has the best cooling system out there atm.iunlock likes this.

Oh god don't you know how GTX cards work or a you just playing me? They boost on their own aka OC on their own. So yes I can compare a 1070 that can OC to a 1080, it is the terrible cooling in the blade that does so the 1080 performs like a 1070 that can boost, but they only boost to a certain point, where you then can go in and OC yourself to get it even faster, but again the cooling in the blade "pro" is so bad that you can't do that.Last edited by a moderator: Feb 25, 2017

I'm aware; but you're saying an OC vs a stock which is diffrent. That's like saying the 6700HQ is overclocked to 3.5 because it can turbo boost. No it's set at something and can boost; unlike a 6700k which is OC and set above the normal frequency. Ppl have been OC +200/700 on the RBP and reporting it stable so the cooling is fine.

From an article about Ryzen.
“According to the performance we’re seeing we can say that the 7700K will be history, even for gaming.”
Nice to be stuck with an fully locked down low binned [email protected] or even Kaby [email protected] for 2-5 years down the road!! -
You found a socket adapter that let's you plug in a Ryzen CPU into your Intel 1151 socket?
You're Intel motherboard + CPU are just as outdated now as the 6700HQ + motherboards
Intel isn't going to follow up with a better 1151 socket CPU in response to Ryzen, Intel is gonna want some of that sweet motherboard chipset + licensing gained from a whole new infrastructure.

Well said..
Oh and the Ryzen Effect has gone into effect as Intel slashed their 6700K prices in wake of the soft launch of AMD + Pre Orders LOL... The 6700K chip can now be had for like ~$260 ...
The landscape is going to be very interesting and it's refreshing for Intel to finally be forced to get off their crooked monopoly party.
NVIDIA needs to be next to get stung.... Balance is good all around, especially for us consumers. Bring on the competition.
But you're right and as I've said it all along, everyone get it line to upgrade ROFL...both lga and bga... and now again, with new chipset upgrades, everyone get in line...
Reality.
It must be unsettling though for a 1070, regardless if it's over clocked, to out perform a gimped 1080 in a $4000 machine. My OC'ed 1070 in a $2000 AW 17R4 comfortably and stably pulls 20K in graphics score (20233 to be exact) so logically for anyone buying a laptop to game and wanting GPU power..... I'm having a hard time connecting the dots here....in terms of making sense of paying $2000+ more for lesser performance.
IMO a GTX 1070 would have been a better fit for the RBP, but of course to capture the attention of the audience they go on putting in a crippled GTX 1080 for marketing purposes. It's the truth guys... numbers don't lie.
The bottom line is, if you have a gaming laptop with a GTX 1080 and it is no where near even the base line performance marks of other GTX 1080 laptops, let alone falls short of an OC'ed GTX 1070...Houston there is a problem.
To each his own I guess...Dackzy, bsch3r, don_svetlio and 2 others like this. -
Just overclocking the RBP a bit yields over 22,000 Graphics score which is 10% better than your oc'd 1070.hmscott likes this.

...and how does that translate to overall gaming experience? - Zero.
Does that translate to paying $2000 more for someone looking for a gaming laptop? - No.
I love sarcasm so if you want to go pennies for pennies, here you go...
Graphics Score - 23210 in a $2000 (gaming laptop) w/ a GTX 1070...
What do you have to day about that?
I'm only swinging at the pitches you're throwing here.
I'll stand in the batters box all day.
Reality is reality.

As we all do.
As you can see my main daily driver is my MBP and no I'm not a apple fan boy and far far from it.
I really want to like the RBP, but they've dug themselves so deep in the dirt both physically and morally (ethics) with their short cuts and actions.
For $4,000 here are the specs it should be: (forget the form factor, not talking about that here...)
LGA 7700K
MXM GTX 1080 w/ 200W+ TDP
Excellent cooling system.
Several Panel choices.
+ A 24K Gold plated Razer emblem that I can take to trade it in for cash...
I'm confident that this all can be achieved in a thinner profile with the right amount of engineering.hmscott likes this. -
No question the price is steep, but the engineering is solid and it is a beauty of a machine. Previous to the Razer I ordered a $3300 laptop with GTX 1080 which was a dud so for $400 more I was glad to get a laptop with good thermals and no need to re-paste or even open for that matter.

So we all agree that everyone should purchase the laptop they like and want most. What I do not "get" is why certain people feel the need to bash laptops they do not like on the boards of those laptop owners. Especially when what we want is to hear experiences from owners of the laptops not why we shouldn't have purchased them from people who think they know best and often times having never even used the laptop, such as the RBP in this thread. So I would really appreciate you (and you know who your are) not offering a comment on something you do not own in this forum/thread as it is irrelevant and speculative. Thanks.
-
Fair enough and there's no denying the pro's of the machine. At the end of the day, whatever floats ones boat right?

On the flip side, it doesn't take much thought to make a sound decision if the needs are specific. - You're thinking way too much there bud.

This "hey RBP 1080 has low Fs score" thing as been said like what? 20 times already?
I mean, criticizing is good and should always be promoted, but repeating yourself around 5 times each, while the one over you stated the same some 5 more times doesn't look ridiculous?
Everyone browsing this thread knows the 1080 in the RBP is a bit slower than what's supposed to be, okay, thank you for your great effort, but I'm here even if not a owner to read stuff about the notebook as I'm absolutely curious about it and there's more like me, while others are here as owners looking for tips and tricks, which is what the thread is about.
The "hate on razer" thread is just down the list, go there if you want; I'm also there tbh, but it's not like the whole section is supposed to be about this.Last edited: Feb 26, 2017bradleyjb, shoespc, hmscott and 1 other person like this.
