When I installed the 7970M into my P150HM last month replacing the old 6990M I was still on AMD Catalyst April Beta, after restart the card was picked up as 7970M, I was surprised because the card was not even out in April...
Btw we have snowstorm here, no 40C... meh. Keeps the card cold though.

haha, i guess im right in the middle then, weather and temp-wise :p cloudy with 4°C outside :)
i had the 485m installed before, so i got rid of all nvidia drivers via uninstall/driver fusion, then installed the 7970m before installing the then current amd drivers.
i guess with an amd card already in ur system it doesnt really matter which way u go ;)

hmmm.... mobo-wise u should be fine, since ure running an amd card in it.
have u tried booting with the 7970m installed and no usb stick? if the card works, then you should at least hear the windows boot tune even with the black screen. if thats not the case it might indeed be a sign that u got urself a case of doa :(

I read the first post, and I realized that I needed to do, the problem is that although it is now December 1st is a limit to the file to download, and I do not have a complete set of files.

edit: the links should be fine, just tested them myself (with my box account logged out of course). also checked my account bandwidth, its resetted so there should be nothing in ur way now to prevent u from downloading the necessary files :)

if any of the links still dont work, please contact me right away so i can correct that!

Links are already working, may be a problem because of the difference in time zones. Thank Meaker, updated bios and the card is working at 100%

Hi, I just received 7970m today but before I do anything I want to make sure I'll be doing it right. I'm scared of brikcing my GPU.

    1) Formated to FAT format USB with DOS files and BIOS changed to USB as priority.
    2) Switch it on with plugged in usb with .."autoexec.bat, atiflash and 7970m.rom" on the stick.
    3) After reboot, switch it off. Remove old GPU and install 7970m card and switch on the with USB plugged in and let it complete the instalation on his own?

    thank you.

    oh nonono!

first, make sure u have FAT32 format and not just FAT on ur usb.

second, u have to install ur 7970m BEFORE doing the vbios flash, otherwise ull flash that modded 7970m onto ur current gpu and brick it cuz its incompatible.

    short version:

    1. format usb stick
    2. put 7970m.rom, atiflash and autoexec.bat on it
    3. put usb to first boot priority in system bios
    4. switch off ur machine, take out ur old gpu
    5. install the 7970m
    6. check and see if u have a display output when u switch on ur laptop. if it stays black but u can still hear the windows sounds during startup, then go ahead with next step.
    7. switch off ur machine, plug in usb stick, switch on, wait for the machine to reboot by itself
    8. enjoy ur new beastly gpu ;)

    cheers

Yes do remember that the bios for MXM-B cards is stored on the card itself.

nice, thank you for your help. It works without a problem. after installing the card I forgot to plug in the USB but windows still loaded but only detected VGA card. Ive restarted the laptop and booted the USB to load the .rom file. after restarting I had no problem installing drivers. tested on far cry 3 it works fine.
I used 1.075v rom to install the card.

again thank you for great guide.

Just watch your temperatures of the 1.075V bios, that is about the maximum voltage the card likes.

Well, i tried 1.100v and i pushed till 1075x1500. The 3dmark11 didn't fail, but the temperature in gaming are out of control, even not overclocking.
Crysis 2 went over 95C at stock clock, against the 82C with 1.075v bios same clock.

svl7 made one for me at 1.175V, don't have a good way to cool the gpu yet to test that voltage well enough.

    One day...

easy pickins: wrap ur laptop in a waterproof plastic bag, suck out all the humidity in order to prevent ice crystals from forming, then submerge the whole thing into liquid nitrogen :D oh and of course make sure to have the machine remote controlled via a tablet or smth ;)

I've tried up to 1.1V but it gets very "upset" and clocks worse (freezes at the same clocks a lower voltage is happy with).

Metro 2033 seems to be a very good benchmark to test the stability.

I have bricked my 7970m by flashing the dell vbios found here:
    AMD 7970m - modified VBIOS - Page 30

I have tried the autoexec method, and blindly typing, also the batch file method, nothing seems to work.

It looks like the notebook is hanging somewhere and not POSTing.

It turns on, the HDD lights come on, but then 30 seconds or so it turns off, the green light (AC power light) flashes about 3 times and then the notebook comes back on and stays on.

Not sure what I can to do revive it.

The M17x R4 is an Optimus system...
Do you still have an other GPU to reflash the main BIOS?

I could possibly get my hands on one.

Could you please inform me on how flashing the main bios could help my improve my situation?

Svl7 tols me it could be due to the uefi stuff in this new vbios

This morning I connected pin 7 to gnd (of the vbios EEPROM). I was hoping that would let the notebook pass post but it didn't so after work I'll try pin 8 to vcc.
    My vbios chip is pm25l0010.

I had the same problem when I flashed my K5000M with an UEFI vBIOS...
At the end I ripped the sBIOS to bits and removed the part that communicates with the dGPU after initial boot and at the same time faked to have a HD3000, which in return will enable for it to boot and allow a blind flash... :)

What if the computer turns on, blank screen, but you don't hear a windows startup noise?

Does that mean the card I got is dead or that there is another problem not related to the video card?

    hello.

questions about toing the -xcl trick..

i copied those two downloads to my afterburner folder.

created a shortcut. and tried adding the -xcl to it but it wont let me?
im trying to get rid of the flickering when overclocking but want them to go to stock when idling..

and in xfire doing little tests with kombuster. the load is always on one card... 99 and the other one is at 1 jumps to 3 sometimes..

hahaha just keep ur eyes peeled on ebay buddy! and be patient, i myself waited for a couple of months until i snatched one up for 350€ :) thats exactly the amount i paid for my 2860qm before :p for me it was either that or go get a new machine. i figured im just so happy with my hm that i wouldnt bother selling it off just yet. guess ill stick with it until after broadwell :D but until then, ill try and squeeze all the performance out of it that i could possibly get. who knows, maybe were lucky enough to do another gpu upgrade in the next two years :)

Heck, with Prema's bios my 2860QM hoovers around 8500 in cpu scoore in 3D11, and I got zero issues with my 7970M, no bsods, no driver problems. My HM is a keeper for a long time. And if we can upgrade to next GPU-generation, I would proabably go with the 2960QM, and skip Haswell altogether.

You mean the 2960XM... sadly not possible to OC in your P150HM (but that would be awesome if one could)

Yeah you'll be golden for a good amount of time.

Although there's a way to keep your machine even longer by cross-flashing the P170HM BIOS :p

got my eyes on two promising models on ebay atm ;) be aware that ull have to create ur own franken-psu, thus use a matching cable from one psu and transfer it to the one whose wattage u need.
no worries, ill keep u updated with all the details once i get started ;)
