cool, because im sitting here trying to decide on gt's or gtx's for mine. just sent the gateway back to best buy. and can you do test with and without sli enabled? seems no one wants to run this test with the 9800 series....(speculation of course)

I used to have that same config with GT's in SLI. The performance increase from 9800m GTX is so small that unless u want to go SLi with it, I would not recommend spending the extra $$ on a single GTX. I m still not sure if GTX SLI was worth it but we shall see.

    Hey MrDJ

The weekend has started, so I’ll be doing some testing now. Just tried CPU overclock with just a little GPU overclock, and this is what I got. I will be trying to hit the right spot and see what happens, but I’ll post this for now.

    Hmmmmm….what was the total score?

I have not overclocked my GPU passed the safe mark, which is 600/1500/950. With FSB overclocking, you can’t even use max CPU overclock or the system becomes unstable. My clocks right now is 500/1400/850. That seems to be the right spot if you’re using FSB overclocking, alone with GPU overclocking. I will test further, but I must have flashed my VBIOS 20 times the past few hours just for testing.

I don’t mind if I get carried away and lose my CPU, but I’ll be pretty bummed if I took the GPU too far and lost it. As far as gaming goes, I doubt if anything beyond the 600/1500/950 mark without volt mod will bring any significant gain as far as gaming is concerned. I do like the CPU at 2.8GHz with high GPU overclock that seems to work very well when using Vista. Heck, Vista is more stable than XP. Not only was XP just stable at 2.7GHz with 600/1500/950 on GPU, but it would not even pass the 2.75 GHz mark with GPU at that clock. Vista on the other hand, allows the CPU to be overclocked to 2.8 GHz and GPU at 600/1500/950. Everything totally stable with the CPU overclocked to 2.733GHz with GPU overclock.

Right now, not overclocking the clock speed on my GPU seems to let me up the CPU clock speed. So I’ll dev into that further.

I see an Extreme CPU was used for the machine you posted a link to. With an Extreme CPU, I’m sure you can most likely max out everything since you’re not overclocking the PCI-E bus frequency.

That was a lot said, I better stop now. LOL!

@ johnkss - that score/clocks were on a dell 1730. They have a higher bios OC on the processor (mult 3x over, we only have 2x) and they can also up their video core voltage to 1.10 (we only get 1.05) so they can get higher stable clocks (life's a bi*ch...)

Hit my record so far... 10,770 with a 2.53GHz P9500 (stock) and the following:

    Core: 665MHz
    Shaders: 1670MHz
    Mem: 975MHz

GPU Temp NEVER got above 70C

    SM2: 5028
    SM3: 5188
    CPU: 2282

I'm going to assume itsfun is running the X9100? CPU score increase of 1000 points is pretty big. Once day I'll have an X9100 or the QX9300... someday...

*LOL* we are getting off why i posted that. it was just for *reference purposes only* to basically say...sli 8800m gtx's can clock in at 15k. doesn't matter what machine it's in, just that they can.

now im knew to these clevos/sagers so im not quite understanding why you have to flash the bios all the time. can't you just software over clock it first? then flash it for the perm later?

When I only had XP, I tried many software programs to overclcok my video card and nothing worked. So I assume the same is with Vista, although I never tried anything but BIOS overclocking with Vista.

It would be much easier to use software for overclocking to find that perfect combination, as it doesn’t take much work. I’ve flashed my card so many times here lately, that I’m just tired of doing it. I’m just leaving it at 550/1400/900 so I can use my 2.8 and 2.9 turbo activator (FSB frequency application) from Audigy.

If Ntune does work with the 5793 and Vista for overclocking (didn’t work with XP), I’ll try it. But I would have to know that first, before reinstalling it again.

All the power of Q9650, all the power of 9800mGTX SLI and the result is .... absolute crap. Its the same as 9800GT'S SLI in my previous system. Lets hope gaming benchmarks will result in better score, but so far the 9800m GTX is not worth an extra single penny!!

Like I suggested before, the GTX will probably perform significantly better than the GT at higher resolutions. Try benchmarking it @ 1920x1200 vs another system at that same res with GTs.

Oh whoops, didn't realize he had the WSXGA+ screen. Well, try 1680x1050 instead, then compare it to a Dual GT system. Not sure if the results are going to be as significant, but we'll see.

Yeah. i dont like fraps that much. But I ll do the standard crysis benchmark. Wow so far I have to say that if other games run like this, thats sweet. All I can say for now that 9800mGTX SLI in crysis is noticeably better.

    P.s.
I dont want to go off topic so i ll be posting all my benches in my old thread.

Mr. DJ (and anyone else who can answer this)... does it make a real difference to the benchmarking score after you've tweaked Vista to run more optimally (from the guide on the Windows forum sticky).

Just wondering what things, when disabled, can greatly enhance a benchmark..... if any.

(Currently trying to find the best anti-virus/firewall software that isn't bloatware and doesn't drain background resources or slow anything down).

Disabling Aero and Sidebar, along with other processes that are unneeded, help me get around 80-100 points more in 3DMark06. Quite worth it in my opinion. Also make sure fraps is disabled when benchmarking anything that shows its own fps. It can suck up to 1-2fps from certain apps.

im not sure gunsmith. people say it does speed things up a fraction here and there but im not sure about benchmark scores.

im using avg which ive upgraded to the full version which is very good.
i have norton 360 on my other laptop and that certainly drains resources.
