People aren't complaining about the noise level per se, but the rather insipid, short bursts of the fans cycling on to cool and then turning off a few seconds later. We'd rather have them on low constantly than turning on and off every 5 to 10 seconds. It is distracting when running on battery and doing productivity like work.

I have the 8170 and it surges up and down. On and off.....
-
So it seems the GPUs themselves are causing this? I assume the 460 is not affected by this?
-
-
Ah, well why don't the ASUS LTs or other brands with the 460 not experience this?
-
-
Thouht so. So a BIOS update can fix this?
-
Notebook hardware control! I have used it on my asus z70va, and undervolted the CPU & GPU and the fans stayed off. I also got longer battery life and cooler running notebook. I learned of it here back in 2005 when I would frequent this place often. I don't know if they have changed the program since, but it is worth a try.
-
nope, dont notice any surging fans at all
runs great too! -
Do you think if your reapply the thermal paste it would fix the surging?
-
-
-
This is the main reason I haven't hit the order button yet. It sounds very anoying.
-
Is there a software that would force fans spin at the constant speed when idling?
-
Hi guys,
I contacted xotic pc about this issue which in turn they contacted sager and they sent me EC firmware 1.00.05 and that seems make the fans more constant and I'm happier with this.
There is a version here: ftp://ftp.clevo.com.tw/ALLBIOS/P15xHM/EC_05.zip
Not sure if it's the same one that they sent me but it may be worth a try -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
From Sager:
"It’s not the same. Sager made an adjustment request to Clevo for the Sager version to tune the fan table.
Sager customers should contact sager for the Sager version of the .05 EC with tuned fan table."
[email protected] -
does anyone have the sager version .05 EC?thx!
-
-
Will Clevo incorporate this fan table in their own bios? -
The ISO format is an hdd emulation mode bootable disc image and how it's sent from Sager, the USB version is extracted by me for use with your bootable method of choice.
Flash at your own discretion. -
I'm waiting for this kind of thing for Clevo P170HM. It will be nice if Sager/Clevo share it with their customers.
-
Email: [email protected] -
I sent few e-mails to them about my problem with freezes. I asked them about update for BIOS and EC but I didn't bought my Clevo P170HM from Sager, I bought in Europe (mySN Schenker Notebooks - Xtreme Mobile Gaming | mySN.de) and I believe they send me this fixed BIOS and EC.
Still nobody from Sager/Clevo didn't explained is it safe to install any BIOS and EC from Sager on Clevo P170HM (fixed motherboard B3 revision) machine bought in Europe ??? -

has anybody flashed the new bios? can somebody tell us if the fan profile has been improved or if you have noticed anything else?
Also how do I back up the old bios? -
You can backup the bios but I haven't found a way to backup the EC, backing up the bios is fairly simple, you can either use the dos AFU program that comes with the bios updates or use the Windows AFU app gui or commandline, commandline and dos backs up the bios with the /o option.
Using the windows gui you need to have a usb keyboard and mouse attached, while the gui is open the fans will be at full blast and the kbc will be disabled so your internal mouse/kb will be off till the gui is closed.

Okay so I'm guessing the embedded controller firmware is what actually controls the fan and I don't need to worry about the bios.
Hmm I'm actually on KBC/EC 1.00.02a and my BIOS is only .07LS1
Where did you ge the .08LS1 BIOS? -
Electric Shock Notebook Evangelist
Okay I flashed the EC to 1.00.05. The fan is spinning up around 38° C now but it is much more subtle and as it ramps up, it is at lower RPMs so it is not a jarring when it would go from 0 RPM to medium speed right away. The fan profile curve sounds much smoother. It's not perfect, but it is a great improvement over 1.00.02.
-
I got .08LS1 from Sager, USB Version | ISO Version For NP8130/8150 P150HM/P151HM1
Thats the rev current machines are shipping with, I originally had an issue when I updated to it but I'm thinking it was due to the fact I was running the generic Clevo bios and EC beforehand.
Still take caution when flashing if you decide to update, I've mostly held off on putting those links out there, put them out for a bit but later pulled them since I didn't want people who were on the generic Clevo bios to end up in the situation I was in when I updated.
Flash at your discretion, if you want to request it from Sager they'll send you that ISO version zip in the second link.
BE CAREFUL THOSE WHO WANT TO UPDATE TO THIS BIOS! I get antsy every time I post it due to a big conscience worrying about those who might end up in a state like I did where Sager needed to step in. -

The checksum for the EC zip file is 3428e4d4ae335b5b9131c8805702d27a in case anyone wants to check. The checksum for the ISO is ae29975a837d02c23b173000e31bd62c.

Sager NP8130/NP8150 P150HM/P151HM1 bios 1.01.08LS1 checksum too if anyone needs it:

Thanks for the checksums, really helpful so a corrupt file doesn't brick a flash. Is there any documentation as to what specific bios releases address?

So I've done some testing with the new EC.
The fan nolonger turns completely off as it did before but remains at a low level. The system idles at 32° C for me when the GPU remains at 51MHz/[email protected]
Because the fan nolonger turns completely off, there is some fan noise always but it is not nearly as bad as before where it would start and stop abruptly and be very jarring. With a more constant fan profile, your ears adjust to you and you forget it's there eventually. -

One thing to note: I also took off the back panel to screw down the GPU heatsink clamps a little tighter and my idle temp dropped by an incredible 6° C. It used to idle at 38° C, even with the new EC.
This morning, I took off the back and screwed down the GPU heatsink portion as tight as I could and my temps are now 32° C at idle!
One day, I will have to apply some new thermal compound, maybe I can get it down to 30° C or lower. -
I forgot to mention that my 8150 came with the latest BIOS revision. I don't remember what it was, I'll have to check later.
Also, do you recommend opening up the back and screwing the heat sink down as much as you can? Or it did it just work for you? -

I noticed there a new bios updates
System BIOS 1.01.11 and EC firmware 1.00.07
http://forum.notebookreview.com/sager-clevo/416916-clevo-bios-thread-129.html
I wonder what will happen to the fan control if we updated these? Will the EC firmware revert the fan table fixes or will it skip it? -
-
I haven't read too much, but I'm just wondering if a fix for the fans surging has been made for the P170HM?
-
What I know - right now there isn't any fix for P170HM
we need to wait...

Sager does have a customized version of Ec firmware with revised fan table, Sager customers should contact our techsupport for it. -
So are there any new BIOS or EC firmware available yet? I recently purchased the P150HM / 8150 with the 485M GTX graphics card and I noticed that the GPU fans tends to cycle on and off. Basically every 10-20 seconds the GPU fan will ramp up for 5-10 seconds then go off again and this cycling happens 4-5 times a minute.
-
Has this issue been fixed? I was planning on purchasing a P150/NP8150
-
8150 Fan turns on and off in short bursts, even while idling.
