I'd guess the 6990M is the 1120SP Barts XT (desktop 6870) core downclocked for mobile usage, or a higher clocked 6970M (desktop 6850)

I'm getting the M17X R3 with the 6970M. Let me know if you wanna see benchmarks, or how some games play. I have StarCraft II, Amnesia: The Dark Descent. Considering buying Crysis 1, Warhead, or 2.

So, AMD mailed back and said the pictures and everything else was sent to another place in the USA- and they said "yes, from the pictures, the cards are ES".
So now I will write Hawkforce and ask him what we are going to figure out now... :(
Really wished I had said "no" to the "You will be the first who´s got 6970m CF" back then... :(

Maybe you can demand that they give you non-ES cards. That seems absolutely fair to me...It IS what you paid for and maybe something else free.

That is my main concern, with this situation. If Dell bought a period of timed exclusivity, I may have to go with a different GPU.

I don't get it. Eurocom is offering the 6970 but resellers over here don't? Or did Eurocom not go through all the testing that Sager does to make sure it will work with the system?

So, Hawkforce offered me to get a completely new X7200 with "official" cards as soon as they are available, what should be not more than a couple of weeks...
    He apologized for the trouble...
So as for now I will be waiting to get a new machine... will write more when I get it ;)

I talked to the Norwegian Clevo reseller and was told they would have the AMD Radeon HD 6970m by March 20th, and since their base model uses a matte screen i cant wait to see how much of a champ my new notebook will perform. :D

emailed a sales manager i've previously been in contact with at sager, asking about some info on the 6970m (since babyhemi pointed out it was in the updated x7200 manuals). he said "Sorry, we do not use ATI GPU now!"

asked what he meant by now (as in not yet, or as in something happened and they dont plan on it).

he replied: "We don’t know, at lest we do not have this option coming from our manufacture!" (idk what's up with the exclamation points. he must be excited about something..?)

not quite sure what that means, just thought i'd share

Maybe he is just trying to create the impression of enthusiasm ;)

It sounds like the person either really doesn't know, or they are under NDA. His second reply was vague, imo.

I woun't hold my breath on it. They might give you an ES version just like what happened to Tirenz if you order right now. I would wait for the official announcement by Sager, Clevo, or AMD just to make sure you are not gonna get an ES.

There's still no official ETA on when the cards will be available. Very little chance to see those in March, IMHO.

As much as I don't really want an Alienware I'm starting to think about it because of the 6970 issue. I'm in a position where I don't need to rush, but if there's no news by April I'm likely going to go with an M17.

If it is the price your worried about... Wouldnt a 8170 with a gtx485 be the same or less than a m17x with a 6970?

The AW comes out a couple hundred cheaper and that's with a better warranty.

I don't love the AW's aesthetics, but if the price is less and I'm getting about the same performance I'd likely go with the AW.

The 485 is just grossly over-priced right now.

EDIT: Although my latest trip to the Alienware site didn't list the 6970 as an option - which is odd because I know it did yesterday.... Maybe I used the wrong link or something. I have a feeling I'm just going to wind up waiting until the summer.

There seems to be a lot of Sager folks over at the AW forums now...The AW also has Bluetooth with the Intel Ultimate if you were going to upgrade to that wireless card.

Last I checked, price was +$250 over the AMD HD 6870M and $175 over the GTX 460M for AW. With the 1920 and 6970, it's $1,899 base price. At that point, you need to use coupons or haggle. There is a $50 off coupon currently I think. Downsides are it includes base RAM, HD and Windows 7 (you can skip the OS in Sager). That said, if you need the OS, the AW is actually cheaper. No idea on which screen is better.

Sager with GTX 485 is $1,884 base already for 17"...

That's great news. Must mean it's getting closer to the 8170 and 8150.

Since I live in Canada it turns out the M17 isn't an option anyway - there's no 6970 here and the Dell reps have no idea when it will be available.

Why would Clevo bring them to the most niche machine first? That makes little business sense.

Maybe it has temperature/power issues preventing it from being used reasonably in the 8150/8170 chassis?

Last time I got a W860CU and compared to the 285M, the 5870 barely ever clocked down. The 285M idled at around 35C but the 5870 was always at least 50C.

Not sure if it'll be similar in this case.

It could also be that they're just testing out the cards on a less popular machine and see how it works out before they start massing it on all of their machines.

    Who knows :p

Maybe Clevo had more time to test it in X7200 as it is available a longer time than the "new" P170/150HM?
Since it seems the X7200 needed lot of testing and it´s a whole other unit/ motherboard, there may be some problems that ain´t fixed right now...
