wait, to upgrade the gpu is going to cost you something around 800 (gpu + psu)
so far the price for the 6990m is 245 as an upgrade

Not at Mythlogic. At Mythlogic it's 172.05. Just ordered mine.
-
Although the upgrade will not cost as high as $800 ( it's $480+shipping for 6990M + PSU), but yes it's still always better to buy from the beginning what are you going to buy later; because it'll be difficult for you to sell your old video card.

Yeah because of the base price...
Don't get me wrong, I'm not saying Mythlogic isn't worth the extra cost, but you need to realize you have a much higher base price, hence the "cheaper" upgrades.
Mythlogic seems to charge for their service from the get-go, and any components you want to add in will be closer to cost because they are earning their share on the service, moreso than the parts (which is where resellers earn their profit).
While it can come out to be more expensive, there is nothing wrong with this to me. If their service is as excellent as it is reported to be, then people looking for service AND a great laptop have justified their spend.
Take this with a grain of salt - this is my take on it. -
Yeesh, though, that it scary. Seems like no head-room for dust/sub-optimal operating conditions that users will subject it to. Might want to dump the vbios with GPU-Z and see what the fan profile is in Radeon Bios Editor.

I remember that Clevo at the time of M860TU, they disapprove the Q9100 because it gets in their test a few down-wise because of temperature. They like to make a large safety margin. It would be strange to have temperature problems with the 6990M since they approved it in a P150HM. (& IMO, i think they retarded the releasing of that card because of more required testing-modification process)
@Mythlogic : What version of the card you have in the sticker started by "ATI BLACKCOMB XTX....."? And in the sticker started with "6-77-......" what is the D version? Although I'm not afraid with that 93.5° since you said that it's "perfectly stable and not a single hiccup" and this is the important thing ! -
I really want the performance of the 6990m but the heat and power consumption worry me a little bit, especially in a 15 inch chassis.
I mean, could 90C+ temps take a toll over time? Perhaps I'm underestimating Sager/Clevo build quality?
-
Lets just put it this way, we just finished Crysis 2 on it (Side note its a solid.. ok game, I mean its pretty, but short). Fan's humming along the entire time and not a single graphics hiccup (BSOD etc), couple places it got a little choppy but thats because it was on ultra and the entire city was blowing up. lol.
-
Do you think room temperature could affect the GPU's temperature?
-
Of course, hot air in, hotter air out. It was a normal 72degF in here during testing, sitting on a bench not on a laptop cooler or anything like that, tried to keep it as close to "normal everyday use" as possible.
-
Absolutely. The cooler the air intake, the more effective the cooling from the sinks. If your room temp is, say, 40 degrees C (104 degrees F), the heat sinks wouldn't be able to push as much heat into the already hot air.
-
Alright that's good news because my house is quite cool like 19-21 degrees C. So hopefully that will help.
-
It definitely will. I saw a blog once where a guy rigged a cold air intake for his cooler so he could overclock to higher clocks in the winter when the air temp was 20 below.
-
Argh...the waiting...can't wait to get my laptop.
Admittedly, the temps being reported on the 6990 aren't very reassuring... -
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
The excellent cooling in place for the Sager-Clevo models with the 6990M will make the temps just fine.
Under 90C for prolonged gaming is very acceptable according to Sager...

Mythlogic, you didn't reply yet, unless if this is a secret
Thank you anyway. -
Thanks for the reassurance Larry.

just came across this one. haven't followed this thread much. maybe it's been mentioned, maybe helps somebody.

Haha, one of the comments is asking why you would wear an esd protector while working on a laptop. I'm guessing his laptops don't last very long.
As far as the heat thing goes, my 6970M's vbios had the tmin at 55*C (where the fans first start to speed up) and the the tmax at 102*C (where the fan hits 100%). I knocked those down to 45*C and 75*C respectively.
Another funny thing I noticed was that while the CCC and gpu-z claim the fan is at 100% at 75*C, it still NOTICEABLY continues to speed up all the way to 85*C. I don't know if it is because I am using it in a laptop other than what it was designed for, or if it is some kind of "screw the fans and save the GPU!" feature, but I'll take a shorter fan lifespan for the cooler temps. (New fan = $35).
Some similar vbios editing of 6990 would probably also be effective. -
Its not a secret, I just haven't had the chance to take the entire thing apart to see the label, its on the bottom so I would have to disassemble the whole thing thats all =)
-
Please see attached, its the P150 / P170 version. I do have a x7200 version also, as yes they will be different (At least vBIOS wise).
But otherwise yes its a production card for a P150/P170.
Our first batch is being released on the 10th (By released we mean customers with tracking numbers) and we'll get more of them every week =)Attached Files:

Yay! Just the date I wanted to hear =)
-
so Dell/Alienware 6990m are differant from Sager/Clevo 6990m?
-
They have the same die, but the vRAM and the card component itself is different although AMD will suggest a design for all their manufacturer but it's that design is not obligatory. And also there is the firmware which is different, but at least this could be theoretically flashed.
-
hopefully we get the "better" 6990m version
-
anyone got clevo/dell 6990m pics?
i bet clevo continue cost down caps from mlcc to poscap..........
but this cost down let us know its level.....U6=5.6uf, E=25v
just ordered some caps to mod my 580ms
-
After reading that post I'm even more confused.
-
Are you guys the first to get the 6990m? I know Malibal and XoticPC are later I think but will anyone be sending out 6990m's before you guys?
-
so when you puts the caps in the spots where they are missing will it make it more stable for overclocking?
-
We've had some for a while now (First ES's then Production Cards) we've been working on the software, and now thats all finalized we are kicking our first batch out the door. So I guess yes yes we will be first in the US at least. Unless origin has been shipping cards already.. (Don't know, we aren't them heh)
-
I can't believe I'm waiting 2 months for a graphic card, need to get my head examine soon.
-
true, but without extreme overvolting we can hardly feel "more stable"
i think the bottom neck is still the poor voltage
-
Would have had to get your wallet resuscitated if you had gone with the 580 and then the 6990 came out at, roughly, 300 cheaper. I know it allowed me to up the size of the SSD and get the upgraded screen.
-
Are you talking to me?
-
Can someone compare the power consumption of the 6990 vs the equivalent nVidia GPU?
-
they are both 100w GPUs. But as to specefic wattage at idle or load I have no clue.
-
my 485m runs pretty quiet, and it doesn't suck to much juice on battery.
-
Yeah will be interesting to see how battery life goes with the 6990. The 485M usually got from 30mins to 1 hour more than the 6970.
-
@ Mythlogic :
If you have any chance to take a 6990M out from your machines, can you please publish a close photo for both sides? a lot of us here are looking to know if they can upgrade their old machine to that most wanted 6990M in using their old heatsinks. And some of us want to compare the 6990M board with that of the 6970M. You are the only one here that has this card in hand right now. You can be our HERO
-
Heatsink wise I know its the same heatsink as the 485m / 6970m so thats perfectly compatible. I'll try and get you pictures, but I know all of them are assembled and about to get shipped out to customers, I'll see if I can snag a picture
thanks -
Actually, it's for heatsinks from models like D900F and W8xxCU.
Thank you for you trying
-
What is the mill quality for the heat sync contact? wondering if I need to order a lap kit or just apply new thermal paste.(I have stock)
- BTW just ordered a Satori P170HM and according to Malibal support, they start shipping preorders the 15th - so it seems like some of the Sager dealers on this forum have been fear mongering about these "weeks" of waiting...
-
Yup yup! Malibal's actually been saying for a good week or two that they expect preorders to start shipping by the 15th.
Very excited. It's entirely possible that I will receive my laptop on my birthday (Friday, August 19).
-
Wow that be great if I received mine by Friday also, so that I have the weekend to use it!
-
no chance, unless you ordered expedited shipping. UPS Ground takes 5 days from Vegas to NJ.
-
Guess who's 6990 laptop ships tomorrow? This guy's! It's supposed to arrive this Friday, so all weekend ill be commenting on it.
-
nice. looking forward to your review.

Mr_Mysterious Like...duuuuuude
Could I please get an update from 6990M owners?
What are the temps? How is the video card handling everything? Any issues?
Thanks!
