Where? And is this price legit with just buying the card by itself?

EDIT: Nevermind, I'm looking at RJtech's website now...

    EDIT: Dual GTX 485M 2GB GDDR5 SLi (no Expresscard slot) = + $395 over a single GTX 560M...

and cheaper than two 6970Ms? that's ridiculus!

Wonder why they're axing the expresscard with the 485M...

does AMD provide the same driver support as they do their desktop GPUs? a lot of times mobile GPUs get left in the dust when it comes to drivers compared to their desktop counterparts.

Go to amd's site and find out. They regularly update their drivers for the mobility radeon.

The wildly varying CPU scores are as pointed out because of the built in PHYSX on the nVidia GPU.

Yeah - driver support has definitely improved over the years. In the end though to say mobile cards get left in the dust is a bit overstated. I remember that I used to use Radeon Omega drivers that were the normal desktop drivers with some INF mods on my Mobility Radeon 9700 with no problems. Did the same thing with my GeForce 8700GT and 9800M GTS (only those were from laptopvideo2go)

Make sure it has an OCL on the filename for it to install correctly on your laptop.

Does the AMD run hotter than the nVidia? According to the specs, it shouldn't, but then someone keeps posting that it runs very hot. Seems like if the AMD runs hot, the nVidia should run much hotter. Anyone know? I'm waiting for this to shake out before putting in an order. I don't need the very fastest... just the high-end part from either company. Price and power consumption are top priorities.

My Nvidia gtx 485m runs bfbc2 on max settings at 80C without maxed fans, the fans run at less than half of full speed, and it idles at 34C, and with max fans around 30-32C. if someone with a 6970m with IC Diamond can post their temperature specs they can be compared.

These are 100w TDP parts... they are going to run... warm. That said I think the 485m is a tad cooler than the 6970m. I know there are a few 6970m owners who have had extremely warm GPUs. There are a few 485m owners who are in the same boat. I think you just need to understand that with these GPUs - plan on using it in a climate controlled room with a solid desk or notebook cooler (if you use it on your lap).

Running hotter does not always mean that it produces more heat, unless it's the same GPU.

I'm glad ATI is releasing some great GPU's these days, price/performance ratio is well known that it favors ATI by far but after hearing news that the 6990M is being released this quick I nearly had a heart attack.....( just ordered a nice new CLEVO with a 580M GTX, just like Nvidia GPU's better, personal preference). After seeing some early benchmarks comparing the 580M GTX and 6990M from what I can tell Nvidia is still top dog but ATI is not too far behind.

I, too, would prefer Nvidia, but I would not say Nvidia is still on top so quick. Those numbers that were posted on this thread were fishy. They sure made the 580m look good, but it doesn't add up to other numbers I have seen. I reviewed the numbers on anandtech, and the 6970 and 485 were neck and neck. From the games they chose, there were some games that the 6970 walluped the 485. In the other games, the difference were fractions of fps.

Based on what some have said that the 580m is 10% faster than the 485m, and it looks like the 6990 is 20+ % faster than the 6970, I just can't see how the 580m can be neck and neck with the 6990m. I'm guessing it will be 5-10% faster than the 580m, and in games like Left 4 Dead, it will probably wallop the 580m.

Some may argue that the 580m's tessellation power is more future proofing. I say bah! The PC gaming market is on its last gasp, even an old PC gamer like me can admit it. From here on out, most games will be back ported from console to the PC. In other words, there will hardly ever be a game to take advantage of all that tessellation power. Nvidia had to pay to have Crisis 2 add DirectX 11 tessellation after it was back ported to PC. My point? The Nvidia chips are not future proofing anything.

I also want to point out the big white elephant in the room. I don't know about Crysis 2, but the first one was a garbage of a game. Looks great, but the game sucked. I usually can tell from the first hour whether I like the game or not. I abandoned Crysis after an hour or two. If Nvidia and AMD are going to pay developers to make games look good on their cards, make sure it's a game worth playing.

They are so close in performance that, personal preference and cost should be the deciding factors for folks in the market.

I'm rooting for AMD just to keep Nvidia from getting on top and stagnating.
Two long rivalries are great for the market.

funny, on one hand u say the numbers posted so far were "fishy", on the other hand u take the 6990m´s 20% advantage over the 6970m for granted. wheres the logic in that? anyway, ill wait for solid numbers on notebookcheck before making up my mind on the actual / real performance of the 6990m :)

    cheers

PS: all in all performance of the 6970m was about 5-10% lower compared to 485m. adding the 10% boost of the 580m (vs. 485m), theres gonna be a 15-20% difference to catch up on for the 6990m (again, talking about TOTAL performance, not single instances where one card whoop-a**ed the other by 50% :p )

Notebookcheck did a benchmark using a 6870 desktop gpu downclocked to 6990m speeds. In 3d mark 11 it scored 3600, mean while my gtx 485m scored 3520, I'm sorry but they really need to redo the score for the gtx 485m, they tested theirs at 2600. Also say in pidgeon english "amd you lie, I teach you lesson."

Well guys, the numbers posted were official from Clevo. They have nothing to gain by making the 6970m look better/worse than the 580m. Both were MP cards running the latest drivers at time of testing.

It's just like the spectacular benchmarks of the 6970m recently, until it was released and well, it's not as spectacular as it was made out to be.

lol, ure truly insane :D keep us updated on that :p

i presume thats with OC, since i score around 3400-3500 with a very similar config at gaming clocks (~9% OC). But even at stock 3DMark11 spits out a minimum of 3200 points for the 485m, which is a whopping 23% above the 2600 posted. i highly doubt those were achieved by using the latest drivers...

    cheers

Lol, that's what happened to me with crysis 1. Crysis 2 however, i am still playing it.

Regarding all this tesseletaion `future proofing`.
Diablo 3 is gonna be dx9 :) And its gonna run like hell on 460m sli.

If it will fit, i will replace them with next gen 100w dual 28nm gpu, and i think thins time, im going with amd. Faster and cheaper than nvidia. As you will see it will be the case with 6990m. And its not cheaper by 1 dollar its half as cheaper as a 580m.

Nvidia is delusional with its prices. If amd can give so much performance with the price the 6990 is gonna have, i dont see the reason nvidia costs twice as much.
And dont start me on physics. That is just plain on marketing bull.

After closer inspection, LBO's tests were performed on June 13 with Nvidia Verde version 268.05 when version 275.33 was available June 1( http://www.nvidia.com/object/notebook-win7-winvista-64bit-275.33-whql-driver.html), and the GTX 580M is not even listed on Nvidia's driver lookup.

There's still some hope that Nvidia embedded complex instruction optimizations that newer drivers can utilize.

I'll post updated benchmarks when I get my 580M.

The 6990M isn't currently available from any U.S. Clevo Distributors... and there is currently no date as to when they will be available - if a company is offering the 6990M in a Clevo notebook, then they are importing them from a distributor outside the U.S. like Eurocom.

The logic is based on simple arithmetic, which I was fortunate enough to have learned in school. The increase in SPs, texture units, and clocks points towards about a 20+ % increase. Is it a sure bet? Probably not, but it's a pretty good educated guess. Those numbers were fishy because they don't jive with the Anandtech's tests.

    Based on the following charts,

    AnandTech - Alienware's M17x R3: An Antidote to Clevo

At 1080p, I don't see this 5-10% performance of the 485m over the 6970m, other than Dirt 2, which thankfully is not a game I care about. The only game I'm targeting these cards for is BF3. Outside of BFBC2 and Mass Effect 2, all my gaming is on consoles. For me, if they're close in performance, I'll go for the cheaper one. I guess I'm lucky, the games I play on the PC doesn't seem to favor either brands.

As history has proven over and over again, Sager is always on the conservative side and will not release it until there is a Hard ETA and pricing. Sager is usually the first to ship. There is a reason why nobody else has listed it.

Just ordered CLEVO/Lotus from you guys with a 580M GTX in your professional opinion is worth switching performance wise without factoring in price.
Might this mean Nvidia is releasing a 585/590M GTX?
Man I hate when I order a new laptop and it gets trumped by a theoretically better GPU.

Tell me about ;-). I highly doubt nvidia will be releasing anything else this year (I'm saying that with no basis though so take that with a grain of salt). And it's not like the 580m or 6990m will be obsolete anytime soon. Heck, my 6970m is nearly as fast and for the price diff, I'm actually fine with it.

The 485M came out in January this year. The 580M came out the end of June this year. They have never before come out with 3 FLAGSHIP mobile GPU's in one year.

I do not think this year is going to be an exception... or will it? :)

Babyhemi, you're in the business of SELLING laptops, not TEASING.

The 580M and 6990M had to be the WORST kept secrets in technology this year, and if Nvidia had a 585M or 590M up their sleeve, SOMEONE would know.

Nvidia blew their wad on the 580M and came up short against the 6990M - FERMI IS DEAD!

    What a tease 
Anyway AMD is putting out some great GPU's this year but I think performance between the 580M GTX and 6990M won't be as big as people think or hope will be.I have nothing to base this on but past experience tells me the leap from flagship AMD and Nvidia GPU's is not always as big as some people think

    Toms Hardware: 11% difference

    Notebookcheck: 12% difference

these arent just numbers that im making up ;) and arithmetic is based on the assumption that u can add up all the parts equally in order to change the total sum. thus, a 10% higher number of SPs is not automatically equivalent to a 10% higher total performance. its like saying u upgraded ur ram from 1333 Mhz to 1600 Mhz and thus have a total performance boost of 20% (which, of course, is an extreme example, even tho AMD´s new Llano APUs seem to be quite dependent on RAM speed)! aside from that, im not even gonna start stating things like "eh, that game doesnt count anyways, since im not playing it". what im interested in is total, overall performance, without taking anything out or adding something extra just because i like / dislike the results :)

anyway, as i said before: im not gonna throw around any performance numbers on the 6990m, make crazy claims or do comparisons with other GPUs until i have solid benchmarks (based on real, not "emulated" hardware and not just specs on paper) to back them up ;)

    cheers

So my question is should I wait for the 6690 to be available on Sager laptop? How long is the wait and will the price be the same as the 485m ($295 upgrade) or more or less, and do you think the significant increase (if there are any) is worth the wait. Please let me know what you think, I'm curious to see if this wait might be worth it.

If you can wait for...let's say a month, then you may want to wait. However there is no ETA for the card at this moment. Sorry. :(

Only you can make the decision WHEN to buy...
The Mythlogic guys can get you a 6990M in 3 weeks in a Clevo chassis. No ETA on the Sager cert, but stay tuned to this channel...
On pricing, the 6990M price is on the Mythlogic site - I think you will be PLEASED.
The 485M is about the same $$$ as the 6990M and available NOW, and you should be able to overclock the 485M to 580M/6990M levels
The 580M is available now, but more expensive
Or you can wait a month or so for the 6990M to be widely available

No one would fault you buying either 485M/580M today or waiting for the 6990M... there's a Cost/Performance/Availability reason for every choice, and only you can make it. It's nice to have choices!

While what your saying is true it make no SENSE. Hear me out, we all know that Ati card are usually better performance and at a cheaper price. I know cause most of my desktop card are Ati. However it make no sense why the 6990 is better than the 580m yet cost the same as the 485m?

So in conclusion, are you guys telling me (love to have resellers input as well) that the 6990m is better than the 580m and it cost $200 dollar CHEAPER!!!!!???

No we are saying that the 6990m is ALMOST as good as the 580m and $200 cheaper, just like the 6970m was $200 cheaper than the 485m at the time and almost as good =)

Lemme tell you about Chip Foundries, my boy... it's all about relationships and VOLUME.

CPU's get 'first dibs' on smaller manufacturing dies (Sandy Bridge at 28nm) because they have the massive volume to offset the startup production costs. About 12 months later, that equipment is vacant because CPU's are moving to a smaller die (Ivy Bridge at 22nm is the next milestone); then, other businesses get to bid on the manufacturing.

Nvidia has to work out deals with semiconductor manufacturers like TSMC, UMC and SMIC for their relatively small runs of chips so they pay a higher premium for the re-tooling costs.

Because AMD makes CPU's and GPU's, AMD runs CPU's through the 40nm manufacturing process and they turn around and run GPUs through the 40nm process the following year (increasing their volume while reducing their costs).

AMD's costs are cheaper due to volume through Global Foundries, and I believe their transistor count is little less too.

LOL There is Mythlogic trying to sell some 580s ... there is no reason to suggest that the 6990 is -only- ALMOST as good as teh 580m ... we don't have real world specs atm, but looking at the hardware stats we have you should be suggesting the 580m will be ALMOST as good as the 6990m.

I am a fan boy of neither company, I am running Nvidia right now. But just looking at the hardware specs we have .... the 6990m looks like it beats the 580m.

And Anandtech, Engadget, Notebookcheck ... all agree. 6990m is better then 580m.
