IIRC the official AMD slide said it was actually a 50/55W part, not a 60W one, so there's even more margin.![]()
I don't really trust the notebookcheck site because they tend to be out of date incorrect on some stuff ie 4850 x2 speed, 4870 x2 speed (rating it slower than the GTX280m, then not updating when the M17x used them, whilst the originally reviewed ones were basically 4850s) etc.
I really hope no one is stupid enough to put GDDR3 on the 5870s like, is it Acer, have done with thier 5850, thats pretty much a full on facepalm, the lower bus width REQUIRES the GDDR5 to actually perform properly!

Depends on what you look at on notebookcheck. I've noticed people tend to rant at their ranking, which I think it's pretty well made, although not perfect.
I generally use it to compare two-three cards by looking at their benchmarks in detail to see what resolution and CPU was used. When you take these elements into consideration I think you can get a pretty good picture of what to expect in terms of performance. I know no other website that can provide you with this information only with a few clicks. -

Im not saying it's awful, just you have to take it with a pinch of salt, as often bits and pieces are incorrect. Its kinda like Wiki...useful source of info, but I'll go look elsewhere if I want something that Im happy to use as an absolute reference.

The problem isn't so much TDP as it is thermal output. GDDR5 memory at 1ghz is already pushing it for notebooks. Only Sager's legendary cooling could handle more
There's possibility for a 5890M or 5970M in the future, but I wouldn't expect it until late this year, maybe earlier if Nvidia's mobile GF100 lives up to the hype (and smatters the RV850 based 5870M). 5890M would be a higher clocked 5870M. 5970M would be the real deal, based on RV870.
It's too early for a full-fledged RV870 mobile GPU, simple as that. -

If it ran that hot, fullsized cards would require heatsinks on the memory to ensure longer lifespan...they don't, the simple fact a lot of the current ATI cards don't require full size shrouds, and use bare, high clocked GDDR5 memory should make this fairly clear! VRMs and the core are where the real heat comes from on the cards. -

Shhh typo
-
it only relates under normal operating conditions...but if you we're to drop the operating temp of the card to ...lets say....5'c under load then you could push the card harder at the same tdp and gain a bit more..then over clock up to say 75 watts and gain allot more....they are giving you guide lines with these tdp ratings. they are well aware of the over clocking community so they would not let that be the max before....thremal break down...(a risk you take on your own) been proven to many times over.

Not that this will make a huge difference but as you guys are on the subject of TDP, Wattage, RAM and so it is worth noting that not all GPU manufacturers rate their cards in the same way (no guesses for which two companies we're talking about!!!). For example one company might give their card a 75W rating and another 70W, however the first company might include the GPU chip and pcb (inc RAM) whereas the second company might only be measuring their GPU chip (no pcb or RAM) hence the lower rating.......

great explaination
i dont like to get all technical..to many flying debates start to jump off...lol
one just needs to know...you can go over that number..by how much...is more of a better question to ask... -
-
130 to 145 watts (since that's what a desktop quad is putting out.) vs 45 watts in regular laptops with mobile chipsets is a bit of a difference.
(speculation of course)
who has a bigger heatsink than this for a cpu?
-
See ... Take that 9280 put in a mobile i7 with desktop 5770 or 5850....
any one can design a thermal solution ... Savers just brave enough to market it -

but did you check out the cooling for the 5870 on the new asusLast edited by a moderator: May 12, 2015 -
Yes I've seen it quite well
-
which one...i keep seeing two different types of it. which one is the right one?
-
You know, even though it's crazy even to dream about it,...what if Clevo increases the thermal budget for the D900F successor by, let's say 40Watt and pushes it to 980x + 5870x2?
....Nah...would be a total desktop replacement
On the other hand, it's not entirely fantastic, if each GPU has 50-60W and the current thermal budget is around 200-210W, we still have some room for a decent desktop CPU ~80-90W. -
Deviltech, a german clevo reseller, has added as well the HD 5870 to the W860CU.

Santech prices still look cheaper though... -

Nice cheap upgrade for the probable performance increase and extra features too.

I really can't see why US Clevoes still don't have the 5870. -

If the W860CU is starting to show up with the 5870 as an option, the W870CU can't be too far behind (Might be the reason for the big price cuts on the barebones of the W870 and W860 models recently).
-
Hmm do I go with the 5870 model, or wait until March, to see if this GTX 300M is a myth?
I guess I'm still satisfied with my 260M, but I need some new technology in my life. -
Clevo has a big deal with nvidia to ...
The 4870's were listed once apon a time -
you can get HD5870 MXM 3.0b modules from http://www.mxm-upgrade.com/. Just email them request and they will arrange for you VGA card that works with W860CU and W870CU models. You can use HD4870 too and it works fine. You don't need to wait if you don't want
-
Are there any info on the gtx 380M? Release date?
-
Hey guys, its been awhile. Call me lazy, but I don't quite feel like reading through all 28 pages of this to get my answer to my simple question, which is, have these been announced or is there a good chance these will be in the d900f?
Because that would be awesome. -
I don't feel like answering because I don't feel like thinking about it.
That is me using your logic -
edit: Okay, a bit of research (after a good slap across the face. Me lazy.. Tan loco!), it seems the d900f is expected to support the card, although I worry a bit seeing all these foreign retailers advertising the 5870 on notebooks like the w860cu and not the d900f. -
You said it just as good as I would
it should fit it fine -
The D900F is too ugly to have such a beautiful card in it -
Resellers are just guessing -
-
Do you ever think the df900 will ever have a facelift its so ugly. lol

Put a sticker of Megan Fox on the back of the display so it won't look so ugly.

It can only get ugliER! -

The reason for me was the Hybrid setup with SLI/CF.
I'm gonna stay in Dell camp until Clevo starts offering 980x+5870X2. Then - screw the looks -
let me know too

I don't really care how the M17x looks its awesome, but sometimes you do need to have a boring looking machine like a precision to catch people off guard, i just don't like the edge to edge crap i prefer the matte screen and thats why i love my precision m6400! Put a sexy background of megan fox lol, how about i have her as my sexy paint job in a bikini gosh lol.

Are there any news or rumour saying Clevo is coming out with ATI cards soon? When is this Cebit?
Thank you -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
-
Thanks for the info Soviet
May I also ask one more thing? The laptops especially clevo that are presented at cebit, are they usually available to buy right away or would it be like the usual pre-order and another couple of months of waiting?
Thank you -
Soviet Sunrise Notebook Prophet
The latter.
ATI Mobility HD5870 DDR5 GPU's VERY SOON...In a Clevo??
