It's definitely true that the size of the GPU does result in manufacturing issues which will increase cost...and with a power draw of 280W it pretty much rules out hope for a dual-GPU version to compete against ATI's HD5970.
Fermi's specs aren't exactly set in stone yet either and if that power consumption is deemed too high, and too hot, the easiest way to drop them down to acceptable levels would be to lower the cards clocks. If that happens you can ignore the benchmarks that have been shown. -

4 months and it still needs a machine to go in...
so i guess im asking...how many manufactures are on board with installing these? -
-
are they making a new refresh with W860CU?
-
hopefully that's the real mccoy, with crossfire connection (5870)

*Goes to put some money aside for two...or the two GTX380s if they're not refreshed G92*
-
yeah, i sure hope they aren't refreshes...that would really suck...
-
Nividia did this before with the 180M... which ended up being called 280M.
If the current ATI 5870 will have just 50-65W TDP, then I would definitely expect a 5970 version with 75W TDP sometime in the future. -

I hope you're right this time. You already lost the bet on the MR 5870 GDDR5 256bit. This time, I really wish this comes true.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
Lol gt215 core 128 bit ddr5
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
I think the days of more than 10 to 25% more overall performance for the next gens are gone, for a time at least. Are you satisfied with that per gen? Why do you expect more?
Even though the HD5870 is 128bit it IS a superior card over the previous.
Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
That's a bit of a problem... cause games do not take just 10% more resources from one year to another.Last edited by a moderator: Jan 29, 2015 -
256-bit and GDDR5 will come some day. I would expect a 5870 equivalent from Nvidia, but hey, what do I know? Speculation...
-
hummm...looks like they have a 75 watt card laying around some where or it's a miss print..
-

Might be reflecting average power usage and maximum?
Either way another part (sure label it 5890m or whatever) with 1200-1600 SP would be a very nice improvement, shame we're unlikely to see a 256bit 1200-1600SP part anytime soon, as that really would take the performance crown by all rights, even with slightly lower clocks -
i would guess it's meant to get your 1600 sp's when running crossfire....speculation of course
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
lol Id rather have those 1600SPs on one card, even with lower specs than the desktop ones, those would be a worthwhile jump over the 4870m, even with the limited bus bandwidth.
Crossfire very rarely hits 100% utilisation of the second card after all, a buffed 5890m or something would be rather nice for those waiting for crossfire solutions.
Those 20w of additional allowance suggests they could have pushed a faster core/higher specced core before hitting power limitations at least. -
i would rather have 3200 or 6400 sp's just like i have now, but i don't think that's going to happen anytime soon...lol
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Haha, at least mine was realistic
A mobil-ised 5850 basically -
RV870 is too big, really (RV850 is an easy fit). A new GPU core altogether would have to be cut to notebook specification, and that's too costly for Ati at this time. A 4890M with GDDR5 could have worked, but Ati is done with RV770.
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
I get what you're saying about the size difference but we're not talking GT200 large here which is about 550mm, we're talking about 334mm squared...the G92 core is about the same size (330mm), so I dont think it would have been impossible.
You're right, a die shrunk 4890 would have been great, however I think the lack of some of the newer features, higher power consumption etc (dependant on clock speeds used etc) would have caused marketing issues. If the desktop 4v5 series even at the 48/57 level is clear, the 4870 often leads the 5770 slightly, but the minimum framerates are often higher on the 5770, so it's not all doom and gloom. -
it is realistic...
if your asking for 1600 then xfire would be 3200?
how is that not realistic? -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
I meant as one card
Haha
-
exactly! we agree.
you want 1600 for your one card
and i would want 3200 for my dual card setup...because that's all i would buy..lol xfire/sli or bust!..lol -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Haha, well, yeah Im not against a crossfire/sli laptop, I just have to bear in mind costs, these things arent cheap, especially in europe,I dont have infinate money to throw around, infact quite finite amounts haha
-
all understandable!
same here, but once you go dual...it's hard to go back..haha -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Haha well for a laptop anyway, with a desktop I usually just opt for a single high power card...my X1900XT lasted for donkeys etc
-
gotta have dual there two...lol
although i should have gotten dual 5870's though... -

Encouraging article...
"TSMC, the company who provides chips for both ATI and NVIDIA graphics cards, have recently announced that chamber matching problems that have affected yield rates for the company's 40nm node have been resolved. This should mean greater availability of Radeon 5000 series cards. More importantly, this should also mean Fermi is on track for a March release."

Definately NDA, I'm pretty sure there are people out there who know this stuff, but NDAs are in force meaning they can't really tell us what's planned until the NDA expires, or the official announcement.
The NDAs are legally binding, so unless details are leaked covertly, you're not likely to see it being broken. -
Thank you
-
Seems kind of funny that with GDDR5 the 58xx bandwidth is no better than the FX3800M (the slightly higher clocked 285). Might be all either vendor can do on the power limits of the mobile platform.
-
best to wait it out and see what they really can do..reviewers generally wont try to break a machine to find it's limits....like us benching people are subject to do....
. so what ever numbers that are put up...will surely go up....but then.....only time will tell.

By the way, I'm even more interested in these cards after realising just how much of a step forward in minimum framerates these cards are likely going to be.
I did some tests for another thread as below, using my GTX280m, vs an overclocked, and then underclocked 5750 card (memory to 1000 like the 5870m will be and 775Mhz on the core, to compensate for the 5870m being 700Mhz but possessing the extra 80 shaders) to see roughly what we should expect, and the 5870m simulation jumps all over a single GTX280
Oh and if they're anything like desktop cards these mobile cards might overclock nicely
Take a look:

http://www.xbitlabs.com/articles/video/display/radeon-hd5770-hd5750-crossfirex_7.html
And this is only set to improve with further drivers tailored for the 5 series -
Looks like you made quite a bit of effort, nicely done. Thanks!

The below picture is run with vantage settings set to extreme settings, 4xAA,16xAF, 1080p res, also included are scores from a single 280m and 4870m for comparison
Because of the debate in the other thread and the query of what effect the shader difference will have, I'm currently running a 700/1000 clock run with my brothers 5750.
This will give us an absolute baseline for the 5870m, because the 5870m will use identical clocks, but have another 80 shaders. We don't know what those 80 shaders are worth in speed, % wise, but if we do this, we KNOW the performance will be at least identical, most likely higher
As reference Scook has posted at comparable settings, a single 4870m GPU of his gets 2984 marks, my single GTX280m gets a little over 2700.
Ok prepare to smile, here's our minimum reference, and we're gonna have more shader cores to increase the effect, here is a 5750, running on a 3.2Ghz Q6600 (which shouldnt make a huge amount of difference), with the core clocks set to 700/1000. Even if the 80 shaders only give us a few percent...
-
never mind, silly me... ;(
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Errr, Aikimox, under the same settings, and invidual mobile 4870m gets *2950*, this is getting *3650*, and has a lower shader count than the 5870m.
This is in Extreme mode settings 1080p run, not performance mode.
Edit: See you noticed -
But, wow, that hotness gonna rock.
Itchy to see some benches when it arrives. -
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
Hahah no worries. Yeah if this is what an equivalent with 720 shaders could be like compared to the current cards, I cant wait to see what the 800 shader card will be like
-
just know the card is faster.... allot faster.
we did all kinds and they didn't. -
Anyone knows When is that Very Soon (get 5870) is going to be ?
-
Alexrose1uk Music, Media, Game
IF they come out on Clevo machines, expect something to be announced around Cebit, as Clevo are intending to launch new stuff there this year.
-
There are some benches for the 5870 on notebookcheck with the 720QM:
http://www.notebookcheck.net/ATI-Mobility-Radeon-HD-5870.23073.0.html
12900 in 3dmark06 and 7250 in Vantage ... all with just 60W TDP.
I would also like to add that with this TDP (if correct), there is a possibility for a future 75W card that might get close to 8000 points in vantage (maybe with a little OC as well). IMO this would be a major performance jump for laptops.
ATI Mobility HD5870 DDR5 GPU's VERY SOON...In a Clevo??
