You cannot expect a high performance notebook to be quiet... especially when its in a small 15.4" form factor.

I don't give a rat's rearend about noise. It's the brick.
Jeebus. Actively cooled power bricks are so 2004. -

You understood correctly, the AC adapter block has its own fan.
It's rare, but it's happened.
Usually with legacy 17" DTR beasts, which is why I'm surprised this one has it.
Grghhh.. Now I'm going to have to be more careful about where I put it so it gets enough airflow. And the dust... arghh -
man this is crazy. powersource with a fan? crazy.
those 3dmark scores look pretty good. can't wait to test my unit. -
<= "Eek" is the right expression for it... so and this brick is noisy too :-/ -my dream notebook just puffed into air
-
Just uploaded more pictures
how turn on stealth mode? -
Did I ask you how much the brick weighed?
Stealth mode should be FN + 1
But I think I remember reading somewhere that there was no hotkey for Stealth mode.
Weird. -
power brick is around one pound
-
I think now I'm gonna go
8.1lbs combined... *Sob sob sob* -
Ad@m, if you have a sec, can you take a photo of it next to a ruler? I'm most interested in seeing if the thickest part is in fact 1.9 inches. I'm waiting for mine and am thinking about getting a laptop bag but don't want to get one too small. Thanks!
-
It looks like my fears on heat from the HDD weren't unjustified. I'm definitely gonna buy a cooler hard-drive.

Since you could afford one of those and I can't, there is an extent to which I hate your guts. Other than that, thanks for the info.

The hd tune score is lower compared to Auburncoast's laptop with similar config

I wonder if hard drives can be under-volted...
-
Adam can you type out the AC adapter specs if they're printed on it?

The notebook I was just planning on getting is no more.
1. The lower right hand side of the notebook overheats (most likely due to the hard drive.)
2. The notebook gets noticeably loud at times.
3. The power brick is not only large, but has a fan of its own!
I'm definitely not getting this notebook. These flaws are enough to make me look elsewhere. -
What did you expect? It's 15,4'
-
1. It gets hot, it isn't over heating. If it were overheating, it would either shut itself off or catch on fire.
2. Yeah. I'd like to hear more about the NP8660 in stealth mode.
3. Would you rather it catch on fire?
It's a 15" gaming notebook. What were you expecting? I still want this mid-range sized beast. -
-
I have yet to see the GPU temp getting beyond 90C. Idles around 55C, 80C during game. Stealth mode is very quiet. ADDED VANTAGE RESULT
-
I wonder if it would be possible for someone to make a special heatsink for the hard drive. Any chance that a little more circulation would bring down temps down from uncomfortably hot to comfortably hot?
-
I'm interested in some battery life testing...
I have a 15.4" gaming laptop... It's brick doesn't need a fan. I mean, come onnn... How many current-gen 17" laptops need actively cooled power bricks??
Need temps from Chung. -
^^
agreed! this power brick with a fan is quite discouraging.... -
Umm the 570TU powerbrick is the same size as the m860Tu, and it came with a fan to. The alienware brick is almost the same size also so dont see the problem here if you are going for a high end gaming laptop. Regardless of the size the internal components are the same so the power usage will most likely be the same thus have the same size power brick.
-
Little concerned about the need for a fan in the power brick too....but if its needed for it not to go poof then so be it. Lets just hope the laptop lasts out and that this hdd heat isn't too much of a problem!
-
This is the exact opposite of what Chung has reported and he has a ProStar.
We'll soon know if its only Ad@m's version as more people should be getting their systems tomorrow and thursday.
Hmmm, let's hope this isn't a Sager problem otherwise I can see a lot of pissed off individuals here. -
look at the fingerprints on the overhead picture
1000 post. yeh me -
From the pictures, I really like the looks of the notebook.
I just noticed that the HDD is a Hitachi model. I wonder if the WD and Seagate are any better for the temperature or if this is a problem no matter what the make is and it is either a design "issue" or a "fluke".
Is 61C the highest the drive has reached? -
Seagate 7k320 is supposed to be warmer than hitachi/WD. it should definitely be warmer than a 5k drive of any brand.
-
there is also this annoying beeping sound coming from the hard drive, even under stealth mode. Sometimes, the hd reaches a max of 65C.
-
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
im just wondering why everyone cares that the powerbrick has a fan in it. its going to be a few feet away from you and ive seen multiple electronics with fans built in the powerbrick, it shoundnt matter. the laptops fan should be more of a concern than the powerbricks one.
-
-
tornbacchus GO leafs.. Wait, Nevermid
yea it is a little big, but managable, compare this to a 360's powerbrick and youll be thanking them for making it so small
-
Is the beeping sound coming from the hard drive or your PC's system 'speaker'? How do you know it's your hard drive?
I don't think the laptop's chassis could make your hard drive beep. -
this is not good news. Remember when Powernotebooks claimed that it won't be nearly as hot as the M15X? What a joke. I can't believe you just hit 80 degrees while gaming. That's crazy.
"one fan is gonna provide more aiflow than multiple fans"
"Clevo is not going to release anything like the m15x"
Man we've been lied to. -
From the NBR Alienware Sub-Forum:

we either hope sadly that adam's machine is a lemon or deal with it somehow =\ -
hey guys, this might give us some more insight on this 8660 hdd heat issue:
http://forum.notebookreview.com/showthread.php?t=288284 -
that HDD is way too hot, especially under the right side of touchpad (wish they moved it over to where wireless card is.
-
so are we worried about the heat from the gpu @ 80 or cpu @ whatever it was or the HD @ 61?
-
I still don't think that the HDD temp of 61-65C is that high or that will cause problems to the drive itself. I am not so sure I worried about the GPU reaching temps in the 70s or even 79-80C. I am more worried about all the other electronics inside, near them. Can they handle it?
Also, perhaps I missed this part, but, can you try to set all (one?) the fan(s) at or near 100% for at least 10 min and then check the temp before and after the 3dmark06?
It would also help if you had some stupid demanding game like Crysis, or perhaps the demo of it.
The GPU in my desktop PC (8800GTS 640) was reaching 80-90s C under full load before I used program(s) to set the fan at a steady 93% and now it is down to 50s-60s.
So, perhaps this is needed? -
-
Maybe thats a sign.
-
-
I remember him saying that he was too busy with shipping the orders (you know, his job) and that the review would take him a few more days.
Perhaps "you" should stop pointing fingers and looking for conspiracies so early. -
But eh, you never know....
