edit: Oops, I see it was already answered just above.
I am in Windows 8 no problem. It was missing 2 drivers, the card reader and another I can't figure out what it should be. It just says "PCI Simple Communications Controller"
edit: ok, it's the intel management engine -
Ok, I'm up and running. Most drivers were pre-installed including NVidia with Optimus. 306.97.
Drivers that were needed are:
- Intel Management Engine
- Card Reader
Other apps to make it fully functional:
- Intel Rapid Storage Tech driver
- Fingerprint Reader
- Hotkey driver
- THX TruStudio
The app Start8 is a godsend except that I hate that I'll have to pay $5 for every machine I decide to use it on, if I go all Win 8. What I don't like is simple things like accessing control panel, device manager, computer management, etc take multiple keyclicks to access where on the Start menu you just right click Computer and you're there. You also require the mouse to shut down or restart the machine. With Win 7 and previous windows a couple key presses (i.e. Win key, right arrow, then enter) would shut it down.
All functions seem to work including backlit keyboard.
I really don't see the practicality of Win 8 yet over Win 7. So far I wouldn't say it's more responsive. It takes me longer to do anything productive, and the tiles are just annoying. You don't always want all your apps and files front and center, nested folders makes things neat and clean, but not possible that I can see. Plus no way to categorize sections which would at least make things nice. One section for Apps, one for utilities, one for games, onen for web, etc. but not possible. -
Okay, I'm going for the Win8 upgade myself on my Sager NP9170.
Ran the Win8 Compatibility Utility and got several "incompatibilities."
I'm going to try to do this by the book, so I am writing this out for my help and for anyone else who wants to see what happens. The following is my ANNOTATED output from the "incompatibilities" listed, with links and info. But basiclly, have to uninstall several Intel Wireless/Bluetooth components from Control Panel. As well as the Intel USB 3.0, but not to worry about that because Win8 has USB 3.0 covered:
System:
Sager NP9170 / Clevo P170EM

just finished installing mine (wasn't planning to but since I've been using it at work already just decided to upgrade anyway)
all the drivers that came with my np8170 works except for the fingerprint reader.
did a fresh install of Windows 7 with only the vid card and wlan installed, ran the upgrade and installed my old drivers (except for the vid card which is using the latest)
so far everything works fine, metro ui still needs a bit of getting used to but the integration with other services like Skype, sky drive, Gmail, fb are really good.

Hummm, I'm getting bluescreens after installing intel rapid storage drivers (both the latest from intel's website and the ones on sager's website)
Anyone else? -
@Geekz
u need to download the latest fingerprint suite and driver off the authentec website in order for the scanner to work properly in win8. lemme look up the direct links real quick and ill paste them here for ya.
edit:
fingerprint suite wbf version:
http://support.authentec.com/Downloads/Windows/ProtectorSuite.aspx
WBF driver for TC readers:
http://support.authentec.com/Downloads/Windows/Drivers.aspx
that combo works flawlessly for me in win8 pro x64

any benefits in gaming with windows 8?
-
-
Well, playing BF3 I didn't notice any improvements, actually a couple annoying things. Audio kept cutting out periodically. And The game would switch to windowed mode out of the blue. Playing along and BAM, in a window. What?
-
had a similar issue with borderlands, it would periodically just CTD on me 10-60 seconds into the game. that never happened on win7 before. gpu driver update fixed that tho.

Well I'm back to Windows 7. That was a painful experience. I just felt like I couldn't be fluid with anything I did. Everything was broken up. Just not a pleasant experience. I just don't have the time or patience for this crap now. If it wasn't for games, I'd probably make the switch to Linux. I've been a long time MS supporter, but this crap really changes my mind.
-
Okay, well, trying to follow instructions as STRICTLY as possible:
(AFTER DOWNLOADING WIN8 AND DEFERRING INSTALLATION TO DESKTOP ICON while I still had a wireless internet connection
-Via device manager, I uninstalled the Intel PROSet/Wireless Wifi Software. Rebooted.
Then tried to uninstall the Intel PROSet Wireless Bluetooth Software, but kept getting errors that it could not uninstall (but worked out in the end. Read on.)
So uninstalled Intel PROSet/Wireless for Bluetooth + High Speed without difficulty. Rebooted.
Didn't have WiMAX so didn't have to uninstall that...
Then uninstalled the Intel USB 3.0 eXtensible Host Controller Driver. Reboot.
Then uninstalled Microsoft .NET Framework 1.1, MS Office Starter 2010, Microsoft Security Essentials, Windows Live Essentials, and Microsoft Application Verifier (x64) as per the Win8 recommendations. Reboot.
Installed Win8 without difficulties at this point. It did recognize that the Intel PROSet Wireless Bluetooth Software hadn't been uninstalled, and proceeded to do it by itself (with a prompt) without a hitch.
On first starting Win8, it prompts you for an email address to link to the Microsoft Market (like the App Store for Apple). Due to my network not being configured, I had to skip that step until I configured by wireless network passwords, etc. then it went smoothly after assigning an email address (and payment method, like CC or paypal to go with that account). While I was at it, I went through the email utility.
I have one lightly used email that uses POP3 for incoming, and there was no way to get it to work with IMAP3, but my other email addresses worked fine.
Then I went to the Intel website Intel® Centrino® Wi-Fi Products — Intel® Wireless Products and Microsoft Windows* 8 wherein there was a utility that detected Intel driver status, downloaded the right driver, and replace one of the three Intel deletes. There were links on that Intel page that were dead, but supposed to go to the Win8 downloads. Instead, found this: Intel Download Center
Therein, simply put in your intel adapter, pull down Win8, and several zip files come up. Including the files deleted before installation. Note some are driver only, and the larger ones include the software. I went large. But installed without problem.
Missing my fingerprint reader, I went to Sager's dropbox or Win8:
https://www.dropbox.com/sh/prpb86rsy6m6wnv/h9V8pE3vR9
There, I downloaded and installed the Fingerprint reader driver without difficulty.
I'm not SURE which other drivers I should access from that page, and I think I will hold off for now. I think I read on this thread someone was getting lots of BSODs after downloading and installing the Intel Rapid Storage Technology driver from that page, so I'm just leaving well enough alone for now.
So far no crashes, and am getting used to it.
It's different, but I think it'll grow on me. Jury is stll out, though.
Hope this helps SOMEONE. -

It's not really the performance. The performance is pretty much as good as Win 7, it's just that the whole Start menu thing breaks up any work flow. It's like if you had to constantly move from your laptop to a tablet to do something then back to your laptop, then back to the tablet. It makes no sense from a workflow perspective... at all.
I'd say it's 100% OS design. It's just two OS's in one. An identity crisis.
Start8 works great, but I shouldn't need a third party paid app to offer something that should be there from the beginning. Relying on Windows just to access your control panel, computer management, device manager, etc requires multiple keystrokes and/or mouse movements and clicks. I see no reason for a Windows 7 user to upgrade at all even with "classic" Start Menu. It might be slightly improved but it's still Win 7 / Vista architecture. It's Windows 6.2, Vista is 6.0, 7 is 6.1. -
Well, the fingerprint reading is nerfed. At least on my Sager.
The fingerprint reader just does not consistently recognize my fingerprint. Maybe once out of 50 tries, literally. Prior to Win8 and installing Win8 compatible drivers from Sager's website, no problems with fingerprints.
I uninstalled and reinstalled via the Device Manager. I even uninstalled Authentec's suite of software and changed to their Protector suite. Same thing.
Now, this is NOT Sager's fault. After some reading, it appears that when people were updating their drivers, even during the Win8 trial period, people were reporting nerfing of their fingerprint function (even on this very forum!). Unfortunately, one cannot simply roll back the driver if one is going Win8. Because those drivers aren't compatible (either) with Win8. Note on Authentec's forum, there was at least one thread wherein someone was complaining, and the Authentec people were saying that the TrueSuite (or whatever it is called) Authentec software is not Win8 "certified" but the Protector suite (a limited version of which is available for free from them) IS.
Too bad I had the same result.
So if anyone has better luck and an answer regarding the fingerprints, I'd appreciate it.
I had to uninstall the Protector altogether because it kept making windows pop up on my desktop indicating a false reading of the fingerprint scanner, even when I wasn't scanning my fingertip. It was getting to be a pain.
Regarding Win8, I'm definitely getting used to it.
The desktop (CLOSE to Win7) is there: you just have to click its tile on the START page. Starting programs involves getting to the START Tile page, moving your cursor to the right corner (either up or down), clicking on the search magnifying glass, and that is effectively pressing the Start Bar. If I want to go through it folder by folder, click on Desktop, then the folder icon at the bottom of the screen. Anyhow, you get the idea. It's very doable.
Just wish I could get the Win8 fingerprint reader to work. -
I installed Win8 in beginning of september, I have Dreamspak premium. I could not for my life get used to the Metro interface that takes over the whole screen, only way to get out of it is pressing the windows key. Tried classic shell, start8, did not like it anyway. When i connect to a new WiFi network in win 7 a nice gui asks if I want to type the password or press the button on my Router. In win 8 a blue ugly big sidebar without any gui asks the same question, that is going backwards. And all the settings like control panel etc are buried so deep in the OS, takes a lot of keystrokes, to get to. Just try safe mode, now via msconfig or via the troubleshooting startup problems. I don't understand why F8 was not good anymore, so convenient but they took it out. The performance might be better then win 7 but i did not noticed that. 3Dmark09 was ~20 000 in 8 and ~22 000 in 7

@rick432:
that sounds weird, have u maybe set ur security level to max? cuz then ur scanner is extreeemely picky and it takes like 50 strokes in order for ur print to be recognized. so just leave ur level at normal. aside from that id make sure to thoroughly clean ur scanner sensor, cuz those popup "ghost strokes" sounds like ur sensor is covered with something u dont want there
i just installed the wbf version of the protector suite together with the newest wbf drivers off the authentec support website and my fingerprint reader works like a charm in win8

I got windows 8 today. Not sure why though. I have mixed feelings. Like most people i like to be kept up to datw. I do wonder if windows 8 will eventually make all laptop manufactures have a touch screen. I took comfort in knowing that a touch screen can be installed on a p150em when i read about someone who had done it on here.
Windows 8 is a big change in direction. No start menu and it seems touc screens are priority in windows. -
fingerprint suite wbf version:
AuthenTec Customer Support > Downloads > Windows > ProtectorSuite
WBF driver for TC readers:
AuthenTec Customer Support > Downloads > Windows > Drivers
I did clean the sensor (though I deny any reason other than normal use that it would be fouled) and confirmed that the Protector Suite software was set on normal level of security. While I was there I CALIBRATED the sensor. Didn't even know that existed prior to that. I THINK its running better... but time will tell. Sometimes the "FAILED" fingerprint sensor window emerges on the desktop even when I did not swipe. I think just having my hand's shadow passing over the sensor triggers it. Went to DeviceManager and unchecked both boxes in power management for the fingerprint sensor as the readme (if I'm reading it correctly) for the fingerprint software suite recommends under "Known Problems" section. I'll keep you posted.

step by step into the right direction
lets see how it goes for ya...
btw u dont seem to be the only one having issues with the fingerprint reader in win8, similar reports are popping up everywhere now that its widely available.

I have just finished setting up windows 8 on my laptop, my usual programs and a couple of games. I hate to admit it but.. i like them!!! Windows 8 are fast, much more interesting than previous versions and they look good. I tried to get used to metro ui. At first i thought it was useless, but by adding some metro apps, i managed to transform it to something really useful. A fast way to check my emails, twitter, get a facebook message notification, read the news, the weather, Barcelona's news , everything that i would like to see at a glance. Of course, there is a way to completely get rid of metro ( Windows 7 explorer for Windows 8), i tried it, but i didn't like it. I felt that i was missing something important and to be honest, i was getting bored, so i am using metro at the moment and i really enjoy it. Give Windows 8 a chance.

I had some trouble installing the drivers for my KillerNIC. They were posted on Thursday but must have been taken down since they're nowhere to be found. I ended up getting them from the Alienware support site and updating them manually through the Device Manager.
Still can't get the Clevo utility to install, so I will be using a blue keyboard for a while, I guess.
Sent from my Galaxy Nexus using Tapatalk 2 -
My Hotkey driver is not installed. The FN keys still work though.
When I installed Windows 8. Only driver I downloaded was the 680m. Everything worked to my surprise.
I ended up installed everything from your list anyway beside the THX and Hotkey driver.
Any new updates? -
I was able to get the Clevo utility (with hotkey indicators) working by using the Windows 7 version that came with my computer.
-
Got my microphone to work when I reinstalled the realtek driver.
So far so good, sorta of getting used to not having a start menu.
Maybe later I'll put a touchscreen on my p150em like GTMonster did. -
Havent checked if keyboard colors work yet. Or Hotkeys. Sounds like people are having success. I have a SteelSeries keyboard though, so dont want to mess things up. -
I personally will probably wait a little while but just thought I'd share since he's not here on NBR.

Wow, I just installed Windows 8 and I think I'm in love already. The price was the best part, seems as long as you bought a PC after June 2nd, you get the price. Also it says upgrade, but it allowed me to do a full complete install from USB. Best Windows startup experience so far.
As others have said, I don't really find the metro UI a problem. You just have to remember, the whole thing is the start menu, that's all.
Until I figure what I want to do about the start button, i'm just using a dock that has everything there anyway. It's how I used Win 7 before, so shouldn't be an issue.
-
What drivers specifically did you update whn you transitioned to win8? Not just fingerprint driver i mean. Anything else? Thanks. Its just that BEFORE Win8 I enjoyed the fingerprint function and miss it now. -
It's definitely a different handling experience than the trusty win7 and certain things you need to get used to but overall I find it both fun and functional to use. Never thought I'd say that but 8 exceeded my expectations. I even sometimes prefer using my touchpad more often now because some of the swipe gestures are working on it, too. -
Should an XP laptop (no touchscreen) user skip 7 for 8?

Getting used to win 8 after years of same old same old. To be honest: the Metro start can be easily avoided. Also I read someone its harder to get to configuration screen and .. just go in the bottom left corner(where startbutton used to be) and just right click to give you access to all *important pc shortcuts*.
I installed a win 8 pre-release about a month ago and went back to win 7 after less then a day. But all it really takes is knowing the basic changes (youtube reviews) and of you go.
Anyhow: I came up to 2 issues.
1. (not so important)
Keyboard LED's are not working, No idea what driver I need to look for to get that to work again?!
2. Win 8 installed killer network 1103-n drivers, but kept losing(limited internet*) wi-fi connection every 2-3 minutes. Had to disconnect/reconnect to make it to work.
So looked for official win 8 x64 drivers, and installed those after I used the killer driver cleaner program. It happens alot less, but the random disconnects still occur. Any ideas? -
Still can't get fingerprint to work.
Uninstalled and deleted fingerprint driver via Device Manager. Went through the Sager Dropbox of Win8 files and in the pdf ORDER, sequentially installed all the Win8 drivers (kept getting error for the Intel Rapid Start driver of "System Not Meeting Minimum Requirements" after clicking setup file, but otherwise no problem).
Still can't get fingerprint reader to recognize my fingerprint during the utility teaching phase where it is trying to conisisently recognize a fingerprint. With each scan it tells me that it was a bad quality scan.
I even tried using the older drivers that came on my CDRom from Xotic.
No luck.
Oh, well. -
Unless you are using your mSATA for rapid start, you won't meet the requirements to install that driver.
As for fingerprint, don't know, works great here. I used the driver from the the Sager dropbox. -
I'm using Windows 8 and I certainly approve of it as an OS. It's faster and better coded than 7, not to mention prettier. Metro doesn't make anything faster, nor slower, but I'm sure it's better to use on a touch screen. As for general navigation? It's absolutely fine. Once you get used to the gestures being almost exclusively in the corners of the screen, it's fine. I'm used to using the straight to desktop button all the time anyway.
To be honest, the only things I don't like are the Charms bar (Hard to use/access), Metro Multitasking (Some apps do work, but the size of the multitasking window is fixed to 2 different widths, nothing else) and using file browsers inside Metro.
Overall, I think 8 has great potential as an OS. It just needs application support now. A lot of things that worked in 7 don't work in 8 due to the amount of background changes that have been made.
I think that Microsoft might have FINALLY broken the classic Windows Good/Bad chain, because I think this is their second good operating system in a row! -
Clevo P150EM - Windows 8 x64 Pro works fine for me (include keyboard led) IF after installation windows8 I also install framework 3.5 without reboot , chipset intel driver (still no reboot) and finally Hotkey & reboot. I dont know why ?! It was on old BIOS B10 EC09. Now I have new bios , mb it more compatible with Windows 8. I like Windows 7 and now Im glad to be on new Windows 8
-
-
UPDATE:
Can it be that simple?
i deleted the driver as Erikk recommended. Rebooted.
.. And wow! It ACTUALLY works! Let me keep trying, but CLEARLY for some reason there are SOME fingerprint readers out there that DO NOT like this driver but do better with the windows default.
Fir anyone else: currently my device manager lists the device as "Touchstrip Fingerprint Sensor ( WBF advanced mode)" under the "Biometric devices" section. Different icon than the Sager Dropbox Win8 driver, too: it looks kind of like a peace symbol.
The driver manufacturerer is listed as UPEK, dated 10/18/2010, v1.4.0.275.
Hope this helps.
Thanks, erikk. -

Hi,where can I find the driver for the camera for windows 8?
-
Sager/Clevo have said they are working to release a new BIOS that support Windows 8 properly. I was able to install it with EFI, but there is no BIOS option to have it boot EFI everytime, so i have to do it manually for now, hopefully Sager will update this soon. -
I have had no problem booting with Windows 8. -
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Using EFI to secureboot it.
I am liking it because you don't need to put in registry hacks to overclock the GPU. -
NOR could I get the Protection Suite from Authentec to work unless ONLY ONLY ONLY with the generic WBF fingerprint drivers. Kind of a shame because the nonWBF drivers allowed for more options to control the system via just fingerprint. And the TouchSuite would store more passwords for free than the Protection Suite which only stores three or four.
But once again, it has to be the generic WBF driver plus Authentec's Protection Suite. And every time one installs the software suite from Authentec, it "updates' the driver to their nonworking one. So one has to uninstall the driver (not the software suite) after installing the software suite, reboot so that windows8 uses whatever generic driver it uses (should be the generic WBF, but there's a generic nonWBF floating around available at Authentec's website which doesn't work), then one should be good to go! -
Anyone getting Windows 8?
