Think I am too, but not sure as to what and the design. Liking some pics I saw on one of the US reseller sites in the piano black, just don't know what graphics to have added. Need site with all sorts of freaky spacey sciencefictiony (I'm so descriptive ain't I?) things to give me some ideas.

Does anyone know how they can offer the new quads when people like rock, rjtech etc don't?
Are they pulling a fast one or is it an unofficial upgrade. Not complaining like, as it will be covered by the 3 year warranty. Just curious.

Sounds good. will spend some of my, ahem, 'free' time at work today and have a butchers for some wallpapers. Roll on tomorrow. I hope we are not disappointed with the prices! (as long as they are cheaper than rock I'll be happy!)

"free" time, i have that all the time at college^^
you'll ahve to post what design you decide to get
yeah im hoping it will be cheaper then ROCK as they are so expensive
im going to get a single 8800m then upgrade later i think that will reduce the price maybe something around £2000 will do with VAT
i dont like how you can only configure it with dual 8800m's

I thought they were doing both? From what I read (possibly on here) they were doing sli and non sli. Have to say I'm a bit surprised they are able to sell the sli when everyone is waiting the driver fix on march 24th. Not complaining though.
I going to go for the max spec possible I think. This is going to be a complete desktop replacement and I have been very lucky in some deals recently so I'm going to treat myself. Now just to find that design......

It would be rude not to
Basically the same as what I'm looking at. Estimated price from Andrew £2950 ex del. Prices hopefully won't change too much tomorrow. That's with Q9450 4gb, twin 200gb, 7200 raid 0, wireless N too I think. Obviously painting will be over the top of that.
Same config at rock (with the old 65nm q6700 instead) was £3.3k

wayneski, 3000 pounds for that? You can get that config for 1000 less from US (or even more). It's a terrible price. That's around 3800E for something you can get from the US for 2500E (VAT included).
You'd definitely be better off by buying from US or Germany. If these are the prices they are definitely ripping people off.

Fade forgot to put it was 8800 sli too.
Best price I got was from RJtech which was £2.3K Q6600,4gb,2x200gb, sli 2 yrs warranty.
Trouble is, then you have to add £150 shipping, £400 ish Vat on entry to uk. So roughly the same.Plus if anything went wrong, I'm liable for shipping both ways again.
With regards to buying from germany iwas looking at devilsommit, pcwr i think and somewhere else I can't remember at the mo, was looking at 4700E+ for that spec which is well over £3k. managed to get a cheaper deal from overam which to be honest I am still thinking about but that was still £2.7k with only 2 yr warranty. Again liable for shipping if it goes pear shaped.
From my experience it all works out fairly even. If I could work out a way to get one into the uk without paying our rip off government a ridiculous sum the descision would be SO much easier!!

Your config @ RJ Tech costs 3000E (currently), with SLI + VAT. That's about 2300 pounds. You can add roughly 200E more for the shipping. That's way less than what they ask.
DevilTech and Schenker have decent prices (in Germany). You can also call Nexoc and ask them.

    Fade,
I wish the figures add up differently......
    3200E (with shipping) = £2522 (ish)
Plus 17.5% vat (on total because rip off britain charges vat on the whole!!) = £2992
Plus thats the q6700 not the new penryn.
I hope I'm not coming across as moody coz I'm really not!! If there was any way to save some cash on this I would jump at it.
Unless anyone out there is vat registered and wants to import one for me??

Look man, I made my calculations right. It's 3200E with VAT + shipping.
    Clevo D901C Notebook Computer
    $2,079.00 $2,079.00
    Display: 17 WUXGA Glossy $145.00 $145.00
    Video Card: Dual_nVidia_8800M_GTX_512MB $695.00 $695.00
    CPU: Q6600 $310.00 $310.00
    DDR2 Memory: 4GB DDR2/800 - 2 $130.00 $130.00
    HDD: 200GB SATA300 7200rpm $195.00 $195.00
    RAID: Disable
    2nd HD: 200GB SATA300 7200rpm $195.00 $195.00
    3rd HD: None
    CD: 8x DVD+/-RW DL
Network Adapter: Integrated GBLAN + Bluetooth
    WLAN: Intel 4965N $45.00 $45.00
    TV Tuner: None
    Battery: 12-Cell Li-Ion Battery
    AC Adapter: Standard
    OS: None
    Software: None
    Carry Bag: Included
    USB FDD: None
    Warranty: RM 3 Year $210.00 $210.00
    LCD Protection: None
    Installation: Install
    Ship Schedule: Regular
    Total: $4,004.00

1.175*4004 = 4704 = 3000E = 2360 British pounds. Add 200E to that for shipping costs. This is the price with 17.5% VAT included. If you can't get that config under 2500 pounds they are ripping you off and taking advantage of you. Even if it breaks down two times (which is highly unlikely, but let's consider it) you'd be still under 3000 pounds.

    Ok Ok,
My mistake I thought you meant 3000E + vat

Lets make sure we are on the same page here (sorry to use management speak)
    Spec is:=

    1920x1000 screen
    vista home premium
    2yr devilcare warranty
    q9450
    4gbmem
    2x200gb7200rpmhdd
    dvd burner
    wireless n
    bluetooth

Went to deviltech and configured on there.
total is 3915E = £3081 no vat charged coming into uk but not being a german speaker, not sure if that includes shipping.
    RJtech is $4189 = £2097 + Ship and Vat = £2643!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!!
Doh! You have permission to flame me all you want (not that you really need that

Still that is the q6700 instead of the newun and 1 warranty return will take care of the difference. But it is definitely something to ponder.
Thanks for persisting with my crap maths!! :D

Look, DevilTech doesn't really offer the real deal with the new Penryns as Clevo admitted that there are some problems. My advice is to buy it from RJ Tech.

If I were you and also have 3000 pounds for a laptop I'd go to XoticPC or RJ Tech and get it from there, pay the shipping and the VAT and have some money to spare in case something might happen (which again, is unlikely, but it will still cost you less than buying it from Europe).

I'm going to wade in here, in part to clear up some confusion there seems to be surrounding imports etc.

Firstly (and this is not meant to be a dig at you Fade To Black!) but you have to calculate the VAT on a figure including shipping. Also it's worth pointing out that the spec doesn't include an OS.

You can get good deals when buying from the US because of the exchange rate and also because sales tax across the pond is on the whole much less (sometimes 0% as in Oreagon where we buy specialist PC components from). This is obviously good for American companies who have prospective customers from countries like the UK.

I must say I do however have a slight problem with this statement:

This is an open forum and as such advice from a neutral point of view should be NEUTRAL (yes I'm aware I am not a moderator!). To suggest that, if a UK company can not match a US companies price, we are "ripping you off and taking advantage of you" is extremely misleading indeed. There are reasons why the UK is more expensive (tax, labour costs are higher, exchange rates etc etc) and if someone wishes to buy from abroad then fair enough. By all means these points should be raised however to accuse us of this is rather silly and factually not true.

Neil, sorry but quite frankly the US companies have to pay for labor too.
As a matter of fact RJ Tech and XoticPC + VAT have better prices than you have, even with an OS installed and even if you send it for repairs two times. Care to comment on this statement?
I will never recommend a company that asks for an unjustified high premium. A hundred pounds more would be a decent premium, but 3000 pounds for something you can get for around 2400 is outrageous.
Why buy from UK when you can buy from US and have money to spare in case something happens?

i see what you are saying and i will wait and see the total price before i make up my mind as to wether i will get it from Kobalt or XoticPC i want some where that allows custom paint jobs^^ shipping is about $400 or £200 and then another £200 for VAT that equals £400+ my config would hav cost $4032 so that about £2000 thats with the following

17" WUXGA "Glare Type" Super Clear Ultra Bright Glossy Screen (1920x1200)
    - Arctic Silver 5 Thermal Compound
    - Standard Dead Pixel Policy
    - ~Intel Core 2 Duo E6750 2.66GHz w/ 4MB L2 Cache - 1333MHz FSB
    - SLI ENABLED DUAL (2) 512MB PCI-Express nVidia GeForce 8800GTX (1024MB Total) w/GDDR3 DX10 Video Cards (User Upgradeable)- ETA March 24th
    - ~ 4,096MB DDR2 800 (2 SODIMMS) Dual Channel Memory (Requires Vista 64-Bit to recognize Full 4GB)
    - Entire Laptop Painted with Any Color, Logo or Graphic (Details of Painting made after order)
    - ~Combo 8x8x6x4x Dual Layer DVD +/-R/RW 5x DVD-RAM 24x CD-R/RW Drive w/Softwares
    - ~ 250GB 5400RPM (Serial-ATA 150)
    - HDD Raid Settings - OFF
    - Internal 7-in-1 Card Reader (MS/MS Pro/MS Duo/MS Pro Duo/SD/Mini-SD/MMC/RS)
    - Internal Bluetooth 2.0+ EDR
    - Built-in Intel® PRO/Wireless 4965 802.11 a/g/n
    - Built in 2.0 Megapixel Camera
    - Built-In Multi Region TV Tuner w/ Remote (Express Card MCE Remote & Receiver)
    - Sound Blaster Compatible 3D Audio - Included
    - Integrated System Speakers - Included
    - Basic Black Business Case - Included
    - Smart Li-ion Battery (12 Cell)
    - 110/220V 120W Auto Switching AC Adapter - Included
    - ~Windows Vista Ultimate 64-Bit Installed (64&32-Bit CD Included) w/ Drivers & Utilities CD's
    - 3 Year Labor* 1 Year Parts Warranty Lifetime 24/7 DOMESTIC Toll Free Tech Support
(Extra 2 Year Labor Warranty through Xotic PC)

so that would come out to about £2600 and if it breaks just ONCE it would cost me another £400 to get it repaired, thats £200 there and £200 return so that is STILL very expensive though i could drop £200 if i just get the standard finish and another £400 if i just get one 8800m so i guess i could get it for about £2000, we will see what Kobalt offers.

If you're one of those persons that doesn't want to be bothered with US resellers then you should definitely consider an UK reseller, but only if it's worth it (preferably pick up & return warranty, so you'll have zero headaches).
PS: Shipping at XoticPC costs less than 200 pounds, but I am not sure if you pay VAT for the shipping costs. Either way, it's still cheaper.

The debate is a little useless. Each seller has his own advantages and dizatvantages and each buyer should take in account all the relevant factors. Lowest price company is not always the best buy. I am also planning o buy a D901C next month. I live in finland so for me it would be almost the same buying it from US or UK. I would prefer that I buy stuff from Europe in case of problems, but it is damned expensive. At least in my case I can do a compromise: buy the barebone with the video card from rj and buy the ram, proc and hdd from europe.

I don't agree. If it cheaper for a person to buy a computer in the US, pay transport costs and VAT, and still come up cheaper then buying it locally then something is wrong. A reseller in the UK can usually buy directly from Clevo (depending on order size) and should be able to achieve the same price as companies in the US, or at least within a reasonable margin (say 10%).

Each store has its own policiy for prices as a buyer we can buy it or choose another store. It is a little out of line to start a public discussion and accuse the seller of being too expensive.

Did anyone of you guys thought that taxes are higher in Europe than USA? Even cars have different prices in States than Europe (UE). I ordered a laptop from Rock and I will pay for it almost 4100$; I checked the same configuration with Xotic and the price was 3.300$, but when the computer reaches Europe (I mean my country) I have to pay a tax that can go up to 1.000$ or even more. So .... suddenly Rock's price is just great.

I agree. I did not reply in order to start a slagging match, merely to defend the company I work for against an accusation of ripping people off and taking advantage of them.

It is a well known fact that everything in the US is cheaper than the UK and I have stated that people can take advantage of this. My point is that UK prices may be more expensive but if we were making £500 on each notebook we would all have retired by now

As promised our prices will be online later today.....

Neil, I agree with you! You just can't compare prices of products and services round the globe!
Take internet connectivity as an example. You can get a 25mbps line in UK for a certain price. Paying the same amount here in Bahrain gets you 1mbps. While in US, it's probably better than both for the same amount! At the same time, some third world country might have no connection better than 56kbps dial-up! So prices in different places, can never be upto debate! :)

Yes, that is true, but I get little tired of the UK always having higher prices than the US for things manufactured in China or Taiwan. Still, no point discussing this here, it is just the way things are.

Actually it is not cheaper to buy in the US, if you compare Kobalt's price with Xotic and add $200 for shipping plus 20% for VAT / fees, the prices are very similar. Yes, it is still more expensive than in the US, but not really more expensive than importing the computer.
