Why in the world would someone post one of the first in-game videos of such a highly anticipated laptop both
a) overclocked without mentioning it and
b) exhibiting overheating artifacts
?
-
Thats a good question, but I guess presentation wasn't a big focus for them
-
Wasn't quite thought through, although I thought the artifacting was just from OC'ing too high, not overheating?
-
Theres already a few people with clevo W860CU's; can anyone confirm if it does really have incredibly crappy battery life?
-
Yeah, I'm still waiting for a real review. If no one beats me to it, I'll post one when I get mine. Ordered Friday 10/9.

NotebookJournal have already confirmed this.
Just look at the 3800mAh battery and you don't even need a review for that point... -

Yes, those are times with the i7-920xm CPU.

A few more things are said in that thread by Joseph. Battery life should reach about 2.5 hrs at most. -
Here is a crysis demo I seen on it.

so maybe with the entry lvl cpu, and screen at midbrightness with headphones plugged in one could just barely watch a movie all the way thru?

That's awesome. He's using a camcorder? looks better than that.

Can someone tell me about CPU overclocking options in BIOS. Are there any?
And what's the opinions about the thermal solution. Can the CPU/GPU heatsinks/fans handle the heat well? -

True, those at Xotic and Gentech, what overclocking options are there in BIOS with the 920xm if any?
-
The extreme CPU's normally allow you to overclock.
-
of course X's have unlocked multipliers, but I'm talking about those 99.999% of us who dont have a stupid amount of cash to blow on a "xtreme"ly overpriced CPU.
-

Yes, the chip itself is unlocked, but as has been the bane of many Extreme chip owners in the past, clevo isn't exactly embracing of a BIOS that allows Extreme chips to flex. I'm wondering if the production level units with 920xm chips have BIOS options for real BIOS level overclocking.
Since Xotic and Gentech have units they are testing/using, I am wondering exactly what options are available via BIOS for overclocking extreme chips or tweaking memory? -
based on notebookjournal's review, it W860CU does allow OC in the 920XM. but i would prefer to see an actual screenshot that shows the OC potential in BIOS rather than taking them for their word. they have made some mistakes in their review of the W860CU before, so im a bit more cautious now.

Speaking of the BIOS, anyone tell me what kind this is, Phoenix, Award, etc..?

Do you think Sager will change this in the future? I know these are new CPU's and it's early, so I don't expect you to know. I suppose what I'm asking is, does Sager normally frown on overclocking? -
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Overclocking is not frowned upon, but once overclocked the entire system has to stay within the thermal budget.
Sager is still testing, so at this time we just don't know whether OC will be an option in the future. -
This system is already over kill for me but I never shy away from trying to make things better / faster.
-
Donald@Paladin44 Retired
Only the i7-920XM will be overclockable IF they decide to unlock the BIOS
-
It would still be cool to see. Makes me wish I had a grand to throw around.
-
that's the unique part of extreme processors. the multiplier is unlocked. this is the biggest premium that u have to pay for (among other things like a speed bump, and extreme memory profile).
now i wonder how did the folks at notebookjournal peform OC on the 920XM if the W860CU's BIOS has no OC options.. or this is OC limitation only applies to sager systems?
anyone who has received systems from other companies, any feedback will be much appreciated. -
As thermal budget of 720/820qm is 45W and 920 is 55W, if any CPUs should be allowed to be overclocked it's not the Extreme one that doesn't have the heat headroom!
But of course marketing and logic are often diametrically opposed ... -
-
I always assumed the quoted 55w TDP was because of the of the unlocked multiplier. I find it hard to believe the measly increase in default clock rate would make the CPU jump 10w TDP. I though of it as Intel's way of ensuring OEMs only allow the 920QM in a chassis with proper thermal headroom.

Bout to order it from eurocom, any reseller's on nbr that I can talk to?

powernotebooks and xoticpc.com have to be on the list!

Thanks. -

Theyre matching it without the cash discount, because the usd/cad is so close now they'll do it, though they are charging $50 for the shipping which is usually free. Yea I tried before also, with the 5797 and they said no, but I guess because its a new model and the economy is so poor now they will

Wow... if that's the case, I'm all over that like white on rice.

You just have to try a few times, I emailed them 3 quotes, pctorque xotic and power-notebook

For him they supposedly did... I emailed them on Wednesday, and have yet to hear a response.
Check out the Sager NP8690 (W860CU) - Intel i7 Calpella - It's here!
