I'll wait lol. In the meantime I'll upgrade my lenovo y910 all in one with an rtx 2080 and an i7 8700. I love that 1440p 144hz panel never knew the difference in refresh rate until I actually saw it in games :D

You've basically got the same system as me, just the same components in a newer laptops with an insanely powerful 8th cpu :D

Whilst my cpu is 'decent' at best lol. I I were you i would love to upgrade, you must get all the newest stuff for free!

Coming from a 24/7 5Ghz Hex core I am not going to see much movement CPU wise and ray tracing is not doing it for me at the moment. I will see what takes my fancy in a bit.

I know this isn't related to the topic but is the gtx 870m still a decent GPU (I got one for free...). I want to do an mxm upgrade on my ancient acer.

And would it bottleneck a i7 720qm with 8gb of ram at 1080p?

if at all, its the other way around: the cpu could potentially be bottlenecking the gpu :) at least its a quadcore though. hard to say, really, but an 870M is definitely a sweet upgrade for a machine of that era! (if compatible, of course)

I would consider putting a i7 920xm in it too. They should be affordable today. Put some LM on it to compensate for the crappy heatsink design and enjoy your new pimped oldtimer on nitro!

Oh I already have a 940xm but the heat output is way to much for both GPU and cpu combined for the fan to get rid off. Even with liquid metal temps are high on the i7 720qm reaching 70c. I can only imagine this getting significantly worse with a 870m + 940xm installed considering that is a 100w tdp card whilst the 940xm is a 55w tdp processor, which let's be honest is ******** (its MUCH higher than that) but at least I have the comfort of saying that Intel didn't hold off on this one :D. Nvidia really ****ed up though on that generation, power consumption is insane, but I'm not complaining if I can lower the wattage to around 90 or 85w by undervolting whilst being stable on stock clocks. Don't want the motherboard blowing up either. 100w mxm card in a 50w type a slot :D

No. Clevo has ended the P870 chassis due to there being no multi-GPU (technically "NVLink" not SLI) for mobile RTX. P775 will be their top dog going forwards

I don't know how but the 870m benchmarks are better than average. This motherboard is handling a 100w tdp card with ease. GPU core temps are only reaching high 70s. I'm afraid the motherboard may fry at any moment with the amount of watts this thing is taking. :D

    ++RTX with larger resolution please!

My needs are graphical/CAD/design/creative/mapping business and gaming. GTX 1070 is currently pretty good, the RTX 2060 (apparent equivalent to GTX 1070 Ti) with larger than 1080p (anything at any Hz) would be an awesome mobile and featured config, great performance, and attractively priced!

    17.3"
    Thin bezel, thin laptop
    3K or 4K
60Hz/120Hz/144Hz <- as a business and gaming user happy to sacrifice Hz for Resolution
    16:9 or 16:10 ratio
    RTX 2060 for value

    Then, in 2021, will trade in for a RTX 3000, with 4k / 144Hz, no-bezel :D

It seems to take advantage on the reported lighter cooling requirements of RTX, while also slightly improving the situation for the CPU by adding a third, shared heat pipe.

I'm personally waiting on the P970 to replace my P650. Comparing size, the P970 is actually very close in dimensions to the P650 due to the reduced bezel size. It's only 1cm wider, but very similar depth and much thinner.

Unsure at the moment, but it doesn't appear that way. There's no G-Sync models and there's no reference to a MUX switch. It may become irrelevant if Intel actually get around to deploying a FreeSync compatible driver as the Intel GPU would then be responsible for Adaptive Sync anyway.

I guess so. The bad news is that NVIDIA’s top dog in Mobile MXM graphics (RTX280) is castrated (no balls) vs. the desktop version. Come with 50% less power headroom.

It's the same for all the RTX mobile models, all power starved, with the 2080 given little chance in most models to even reach the previous 1080 model OC peaks in performance, but worse it'll be the same for each performance level GPU.

It may be each 20xx mobile GPU will perform as the previous 10xx model performed, maybe a bit shifted up in the best powered / cooled models, the same or worse in the thinnest laptops.

It's gonna take some work to " Polish the Turing" mobile GPU's enough to be "better" than the 10 series. I'm sure benchmarks will be found to show improvement - briefly before they thermal / power throttle, I hope the new owners feel they got a good deal after they get them home.

And, MSI's versions look as high-priced as ever:
