For upcoming games like Mass effect 2 or Dragonage: Origins, do you know if both monitor resolutions would likely be supported? Or would one or the other often be overlooked?

Also, regarding the Alienware m17x, does anyone know if it would be less reliable, be built out of lower quality parts or be worse regarding heat generation/battery life than the Sager NP9850? Also, would tech support/warranty from Alienware or Sager be about the same, or is one generally better?

    thanks

it's going to be hard. if i was to get one, i would go for the aleinware this round because of the res and the 17. unless the alienware have a eerom (to flash the bios.) because in another thread i was flashing my bios and someone with a toshiba with the same card couldn't do it.

and i love the fn+1 feature.

Yep, new games generally supports 1200p and 1080p.

M17x chassis is aluminum and M980NU is polycarbonate... So M17x have a better build quality and hardware quality isn't going to be a problem because expect the motherboard every component is 3rd party :p . Heat we shall see but i think the M980NU gonna run a little cooler because of the bigger form factor :p .

Warranty... You can buy complete care for M17x :p

I don't think so (and even if it's aluminum over polycarbonate still better than just polycarbonate :p ) but I'm a bit curious about what make u think that :D

I said that every component is 3rd party EXPECT for the motherboard :p .

Alienware never had complete care as it's an dell warranty so those reviews doesn't really matters. And TBH I'm not getting "romanced" as i have self experience with complete care :D

Sorry if this was already posted here, but AVA Direct (overpriced) and Xotic PC (great price) have started taking pre-orders for the M980nu.

    Here is the thread.

Looks like the Alienware M17X and this M980nu are going to be the big dogs for a while.

Polycarbonate is really easy to scratch (while it's pretty good when dealing with impacts).

Aluminium performs much better when undergo physical impacts than Polycarbonate, Aluminium is 2.75 on mohs scale, and as anodized aluminium have an aluminium oxide layer in his surface (9 on mohs scale just below diamond) and anodizing increases thickness of oxide layer in materials... :D .

Aluminium is just an superior material, much harder to scratch (but not impossible), harder to break, etc :p

No one knows yet, as neither have been available to the general public for thorough benchmarking or thermal testing, only time will tell, as for warranty the Alienware will win in that area as their warranty and coverage has been taken over by Dell and now offers Dell's Complete Care warranty, Sager offers nothing like that, although Sagers Clevo models are built extremely well and usually suffer very little in way of problems.

I know with Dell if I get the complete care warranty and a few years down the road my systems has total failure and Dell doesn't have a replacement they will give me the newest model available. Many people at NBR have reported getting their M170 and M1710 replaced with a M1730. There has been one report already of a M1730 being replaced with a M17x. Will resellers offer that type of replacement with their warranties? Do we have anyone here that has experienced that kind of replacement service with 3rd party resellers? I heard apple care is supposed to be similar.

Absolutely. That is what the warranty calls for...if your Sager, PowerPro or Crown laptop cannot be repaired while under warranty then you will get a brand new replacement with the most equivalent model available at the time.

Is the warranty transferrable if the system is sold?

Edit: One other thing, have you ever done group buys here?

Yes, the warranty goes by the serial number and the ship date...not the owner.

If it is sold it would be helpful to let your vendor know the contact information of the new owner, but it is not required.

Also, if it is ever stolen or lost, let your vendor know because sometimes we can recover them if anyone calls for Support on it.

About the seller ratings... I never saw a really big store with a good rating in sites like this (at least not in brazil) and it doesn't really means those store have a bad customer service (at least i never had a single problem). I already used complete care 3 times and every time they appear next business day in my door to fix my problem so...

Of course this is MY personal experience but as you can imagine being my personal experience it's more important to me than a rating in a website.

Aluminum case DOESN'T affect temperature AT ALL anyway ;) . Just as i already said... The M980NU is probably going to run cooler.

Maybe this is just a difference in how we deal with customer service...

I'm not going to call dell because i had an BSOD, either if my windows stop booting up and i simply doesn't expect they to help me in this situations (while i know they offer it) because i know i can do better troubleshooting myself.

I only need a seller to help me with hardware failures and thats it (and i have to say that dell did a really good job in this). But i can't say anything about they helping u about troubleshooting software problems as i never asked that and I'm never going to (maybe thats where u guys got that much problems with dell).

And the in brazil every guy in dell talks a clear and native Portuguese lol.

    Just my 2cents

Well that's one side of the coin.

Right now, A.W. and Clevo both have great rigs with the same internals.

I'm not tied to any brand. If the Clevo had i7 and a couple 300's I'd get it in a heart beat.

However, with that said, I've had nothing but excellent customer service experiences with Alienware with my current and my previous A.W. laptops.

I've never had a rep with an accent and they never seemed to be reading from a card.

I'm sure every company has reps that are less than stellar and an experience with a poor rep would leave a bad taste in your mouth.

Every company has their bad apples, but shouldn't necessarily be judged by the few for eternity.

I've had a rep call me a religious epithet towards jews that starts with a K after I requested that the rep not call me on friday night to saturday night in observation of sabbath. I'll leave it at that, but that's enough of a reason in my book to go with a different company

Well, the service manual will be the best guide, but with Clevo's layouts it's pretty much self explanatory once you take the bottom panel off.

We'll be able to walk you through it either way.

Ugh... you have to remember the "reps" you talk to usually didn't even make it through high school, and they tend to be ignorant to a lot. That's really unacceptable, but at the same time I'm not surprised.

My hometown has five call centers now (population of 70K), and most of the people that work there are the kids that dropped out of my school between grade 11 and 12.

Yea... but here's the kicker, it wasn't a foreign call center.... that's what really pushed me away from DELL and to sager. (and one day, when I save up enough money from working... I will get a np9850 for a "desktop i can move around..." I have the spec in my mind too already :D

Guys, what CPU would you recommend for this notebook?
I can't upgrade it in the future as I'm not tech savy; opening the notebook is a definate no no for me.

I also do not plan on getting one equipped with the QX9300 as that is waay too expensive. What's the 'best' option for me? I do plan to game with it. Some games that I plan to play: Bioshock 1-2.// GTA IV.// Fallout 3.// Crysis 1-2.//Oblivion.//Far Cry series

    Many thanks.

get the 2.0ghz quad. It's "safer" for future games, and even at 2.0ghz will still perform well on older games.

That's your choice, however IMO, if the superiors were made aware of that (as in recording) they would be fired.

I'm pretty sure it's safe to say that's not a view held by the company.

When are you guys finally going to get your hands on the M980NU? Seems like clevo is really dragging there heels on this one.

Since most games right now are optimized for dual core PCs, won't getting a higher clocked double CPU be smarter? And I read somewhere that games not optimized for quad core would run slower due to the CPUs' lower clock rating. Is that true?

The 9850 is the route I am most likely taking ==

I hear many of you stating its better to get a quad core because it will future proof gaming a bit...

Can anyone tell me what games they feel will be utilizing quad core first ( like FPS's or RPG's?) and if any developers have given indication they are coming out in the next year?

Any advice appreciated because I might consider a different build.

This game loves quad-core... Too much of a resource hog but yes this game will have a huge benefit...

    UT3:
Useless but will utilize it lol... This game is so well optimized I can max it out on my P-6860 (specs in sig) which has 1.83GHz dual core... Will bring FPS to an extreme rate...

Ut3 looked gorgeous on my W90vp... I saw the game in a new light :) Shame no one in my house plays it anymore.

GTA4 -- that's one i will never play - on pc or console.

-- Any other games known to use quad or in development to use quad cores?

I only ask because if MMORPG's and RPG's are not going full swing to quad core for another 1.5 to 2 yrs.. I will go with the fastest dual core I can put in the 9850, and just get a new laptop in 2 years.

If only the W90vp had options other than those ATI 4870's I'd buy another one! The 18.4 screen is beautiful and the chassis looks classy/stylish, without looking like a race car sitting in my living space. I do like the 9850 slight bling over the basic business look, so it fits the bill for me better any other to date.
