if its battery life ure after its a nobrainer to go for the second battery. its about 100 bucks if not even less and gives u double battery life whereas the 7970m would give u like 20% extra life (best case and that at idle clocks without any load whatsoever, in reality its probably even less)

    cheers!

Shouldn't the HD7970M turn off in the EM when not in used? If it doesn't turn off that means the Optimus is gonna have a lot longer battery life. Or you are on the HMs?

So to confirm, the 7970m clocks the vram at stock speed on battery too? Core clocks too? (What % of stock performance on AC do you get on battery?)

580m down near 12% of stock clocks on both core and mem obviously both kills performance but i get 2½hrs+ surfing/office which means I don't need yet ANOTHER device for the biz.

    Errr thread title?...

Hey guys, sorry for asking this I've been away for sometime...

So, what is the best place to order a 7970M for my Malibal P150HM?
(Malibal only has 680M which is way too expensive!)

    Is't plug-and-play? (other than drivers)

    Thats all, thanks :)

Sager is a reliable OEM in my opinion. and yes, the card is PAP when its vbios is modded. Sager will mode the vbios for you.

I am glad you posted that video, I was about to mention it.
One thing that bothers me is the fact that the GPU utilization never go above 85% and averages around 70%. Now I do not know if that is normal on bf3 as I do not own it but the few other videos I found always had 90-99% GPU utilization...

    Hey Tonrac,

Congrats on the new card man.........glad to have some concrete proof that it works fine on the 15" HMs.

BTW any update on the favor i had asked for?.....I apologize if im being impatient.......and if you can't...... thats totally fine too. But I do have some other questions..

    1. How do you modify the inf for the drivers?
    2. Also would really appreciate it if you ( or any 680M + HM owners) can confirm if 3d will work if we hook it up to an external 3D monitor.

Cheers.....and congrats on you card again!!

Hey Guys, just a quick question.

Is it normal that the 680m downclocks if the graphic load is getting lower.
Example: oc 1030/2400 during Skyrim gameplay its full power, but during Load Screens or looking at the inventory/maps the card seems to downclock and once load is needed it goes up to the oc again

    Thanks

That happens to me too, but just in that game. Having the vsync on anyway, doesn't affect the frame rate that still stays on 60fps even during downclocking. That downclock is not due to the over-temperature that keeps pretty low.
On others very demanding games instead, I noticed the Gpu throttles a little bit if it reaches the temperature of 90C. There's a slight downclock until the fan gets full speed and takes the temp back to 85C.

Some suggest that behavior occurs when you have the GPU power set to 'adaptive' rather than 'performance' in the Nvidia Control Panel. I think it could be a hardware function regardless of software settings but I'm just guessing here.

It's normal, if you make a GPU-Z log, you'll find GTX675M reacts the same way to GTX680M.

The steps you take to modify the Driver sometimes vary between different releases, sometimes it will be a different .inf and other times the same one can be used. You can also modify Desktop Drivers too.

How I modified 304.79 is detailed here.

Since many unrecognized by Bios GTX 680M's will have exactly the same 0000.1558 hardware ID, you may be able to use already modified ones by people on this forum.

Little guide for installing GTX680M on P150HM

*** PLEASE READ AND COMPREHEND THE FOLLOWING BEFORE OPENING YOUR LAPTOP. BY OPENING YOUR LAPTOP AND FOLLOWING THIS TUTORIAL YOU AGREE AND UNDERSTAND THESE TERMS. OPENING AND MODIFYING YOUR LAPTOP CAN END UP WITH A DEAD OR NON RESPONSIVE MACHINE. YOU ARE DOING THIS AT YOUR OWN RISK AND MAY VOID YOUR WARRANTY. MYSELF OR ANYONE ELSE ARE NOT RESPONSIBLE SHOULD YOU DAMAGE YOUR MACHINE. THIS TUTORIAL IS JUST A QUICKLY GUIDE, I NEVER PRETEND TO HAVE THE MORE EFFICIENT SOLUTION FOR EXCHANGING YOUR GPU***

Tips: put your screws in a little recipient for not losing it
Tips 2: The memory heatsink is already with thermal pad installed , so just take off plastic protection and put the memory heatsink in. KEEP THE ORIGINAL THERMAL PAD I tried change thermal pad with some supposed more efficient (like i did with my GTX580M), at stock or 853 mhz clock there was no problem but when i tried saltius vbios, the GPU has kept his idle clock of 324Mhz in 3d application (I think that i have done something wrong) after replacement with original thermal pad, the card work like a charm with saltius vbios.
For the core heatsink i think it's better take off thermal pad and replace with a good thermal paste

First remove the 4 screws in order to remove the back cover of the laptop
    IMG035.jpg

Remove the 4 screws of the core heatsink and the three screws of the memory heatsink
    IMG017.jpg

    Remove the core heatsink
    IMG018.jpg

    Then the memory heatsink
    IMG019.jpg

You can now see the Gpu and remove with a flat screwdriver the two things (sorry i don't know the word for that)
    IMG021.jpg

you can mount the card with an angle of 30 degrees to disengage the slot
And see two sexy babes side by side
    IMG022.jpg

you can but do not have to apply thermal pad on the back side (memory) of the card
    IMG024.jpg

Then engage the card in the slot with an angle of 30 degree
    IMG023.jpg
Fix the card with the two things

The heatsink is already with thermal pad on it
    HeatsinkPad.jpg
The memory heatsink is already with thermal pad installed , so just take off plastic protection and put the memory heatsink in.
Remember that meaker WRC OC is with original thermal pad on memory heatsink. ;)
    kEEP THE ORIGINAL THERMAL PAD

Then you can gently place the memory heatsink (check twice that thermal pad is in contact with memory) and screw it
    IMG025.jpg

After removing the thermal Pad, clean the gpu heatsink with 90 degree alcohol

Put a little spot of thermal paste on gpu
    IMG029.jpg

    Spread out the thermal paste
    IMG032.jpg

Place the gpu heatsink and screw it
    IMG033.jpg

Place the back cover and screw it ... Congratulation you have exchange your gpu with success
Now power on your laptop, install driver with modded inf and check temperature before gaming and benchmarking.
    Enjoy

for modifying the the inf do u just replace every entry of :

    %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0371.1558% = Section022, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_03711558

    to this:

    %NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0000.1558% = Section022, PCI\VEN_10DE&DEV_11A0&SUBSYS_00001558

well the section number according to whatever section you take this out of but essentially is that correct and also the end part
    NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0371.1558 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M "
    to
    NVIDIA_DEV.11A0.0000.1558 = "NVIDIA GeForce GTX 680M "

or should i do what kingpin did and make an extra entry for the GTX 680M?

If the Driver already includes a GTX 680M the only thing preventing it from working is the correct Hardware ID so replacing every single entry with the correct one will work as long as you don't miss any out. Either way will work fine.

I have been using Nvidia 304.79 beta but just installed 302.77 and am noticing better performance, another user also mentioned it solved their crashing problems in Bioshock. I got 302.77 from the Clevo site and it is specifically for the GTX 680M.

For the HM series, The 7970M is the best bang for the buck since it won't have enduro issues but if you plan to overclock then the GTX 680M will be much better I believe , both have their benefits personally since i am a Nvidia fanboy i'll always choose nvidia... it more of addiction then a good thing :\

    EDIT:
Forgot to say that the GTX 680M is cooler too and I think it consumes less power but those will go away if you overclock

Without notebookcooler on my P150HM, i reach the same temp on Crysis2 (92°C) as the GTX580M but with frequencies of 1037 Mhz core and 2450Mhz memory.
With these frequencies, the peak power consumption was 185W but average was 165W so even with that extreme OC you can use only the 180W PSU.

@cloudfire: it's clearly a beast, i think all the GTX680M could reach 1000 Mhz core 2200 memory with the modded vbios. I have done an error thinking that exchange the original thermal pad with phobya could improve the cooling system (like i did with my GTX580M). After doing that, the card run cool at stock and with max stock OC of 853Mhz core and 2400Mhz memory, but when i flash to staltius the card remain at idle clock (i Think that i have made a mistake by incorrectly putting the thermal pad on VRM) By chance it seem that this behaviour allow the card to protect itself and not burn (temp has never reached a danger zone). Finally i decided to revert to original pad and then the saltius vbios is giving his power juice.

How was the power consumption and what temps do you get playing games for awhile with the OC?

EDIT: Nevermind he posted when I posted lol :D

    EDIT#2:

    Doesn't the GTX 680M throttle @ 90 C?
