Hey guys, I found out that there are some BIOS updates. How does one do it? Also, I believe I've got one of those first BIOS versions, do I have to update them one by one or I can just jump and use the last BIOS version?
Other problem is - Why is computer slow after sleep mode? It is lagging a lot in everything, if I want to open programs like Google Chrome, Winamp, Notepad+ and so on, it usually takes 2-3 seconds more, sometimes even more, not to mention that I have to wait like 5 seconds in Google Chrome address bar to start typing.
Could this be solved by updating BIOS? I'm using Win 8.1.
-
-
DJ ... Bios updates are cumulative so you can go from the original one to the current version. I am running (Sager Np2740) Ubuntu 14.04.1 and Win 7 and do not notice any of these issues you have but I am running an SSD. What Hard drive do you have and which Operating System(s)?
-
Hey Josea, I'm running Windows 8.1 on Samsung 840 SSD.
-
DJBlaster, http://www.clevo.com.tw/en/e-services/download/ftpOut.asp?Lmodel=W740SU<ype=9&submit=+GO+ Where are you getting the BIOS update from? I do not see any there.. Sager emailed me the latest BIOS file and these were the instructions for my SAger
Unzip the file to a DOS bootable USB flash drive. Use the flash drive to boot up the computer. Press a key to continue. After the BIOS is flashed, you need to disconnect the power for 10 seconds. (NOTE I would format the flash drive to FAT32) I have not had to do a BIOS flash yet, so you may want to wait for someone else to confirm
Note. If you run Windows 7 or 8, please disable the UEFI boot in the CMOS setup. -
Would this laptop be fast enough for poker? I have an asus u45jc-a1 thats i3-370m processor but it lags a lot b/c i use poker programs called holdem manager 2 and tableninja. I play lot of tables so the lag is really bad when i play lot of tables.
One laptop someone suggested is the lenovo y40 and its one of the few 14 inch laptops thats i7 processor but someone tell me this i7 isn't good b/c its a U series and it isn't much faster than my currenty i3-370m processor. Is this true/false?
the other 14' laptop someone suggest is the sager np2740 one and its a true quad core. Thoughts on this? anyone here use this sager for online poker can tell me how is it? -
Hey im looking at the sager one right now on xoticpc.
XOTIC PC | Sager NP2740 (Clevo W740SU) - New 14" Sager Notebook
If i get this one, do i need to do any upgrades to it? First off, would upgrading 8gb ram to 16gb ram be worth it? Xotic pc charges another 90 dollars for this. I believe i could get one on amazon an 8gb for 80 dollars or so and have a friend install it but woudl it be better to have it done by xotic pc as both 8gb sticks would be same brand or thats not an issue?
I currently have a 250gb ssd samsung one on my asus u45jc-a1 laptop. So i would then replace that hard drive with this one currently? The thing is wouldn't the sager still be a bit slow since i would be transferring my current ssd into the sager laptop? Currently 95gb available out of 232gb showing on my ssd laptop. Should i get a new 250gb ssd all together or would that be a waste of money? Note, i wouldn't do anything at all with this ssd in my asus and would just leave it there. Also would it be best to wipe out everything in my current ssd hard drive right now before i transfer it to the sager if i choose this?
I see an option for an external video adapter. Do i need this or not? The thing is my laptop will be connected to a monitor almost all the time when im playing. I will be connecting it to a 24' laptop with 1600x1200 resolution. I mean there might a chance i use a 27' laptop with bigger resolution but the chance of that happening is close to zero.
If im only planning to connect the sager to one external monitor with 1600x1200 resolution... would i need the external display video adapter or not? Im not sure so i dont want to buy the sager then i find out i can't connect to the external monitor thats 1600x1200 resolution. Im guessing unless you are connecting to at least 2 monitors then you need it? I always thought any computer whether laptop or deskto could connect to a monitor without any issues.

There isnt much that you would need to upgrade right away, except maybe the RAM to get to 16GB. Since the prices you quoted were only $10 I would have it pre installed so you dont have to worry about doing it later.
You could move your current SSD over and use that. You will have to reinstall some drivers but a disc with all of those will be included.
You will not need the external video adapter if you only need one external monitor hooked up, you can do that with the computers ports already. You only need one of those if you need 3 or more external monitors. -
There's no ODD in the machine though.

The usb external display adapters are for 2d work only. They will be software rendered.
You can also grab drivers from the sager website. -
I'm going to get the sager 2740 for online poker as my asus u45jc-a1 thats i3-370m processor is slow.
But can someone tell me what i should or shouldn't upgrade?
XOTIC PC | Sager NP2740 (Clevo W740SU) - New 14" Sager Notebook
One person said get the 250gb ssd hard drive. I assume they mean as the primary one? I see you could get ssd for that or the mSATA SSD Drive ( Slot 1 ). I assume just get primary? Is it if i get tor MSATA SSD Drive slot 1, that mean i get 2 hard drive one thats the 250gb ssd one and the default 5400 rpm one? But u could only put one hard drive in a computer right? Thus no point in the 5400 rpm one as its too slow? So that mean i would have to manually switch the hard drive if i get two of them?
Someone suggested me to upgrade wireless card for 35 dollars more. Thoughts on this? Is the default wireless card not that good? Even if i upgrade wireless card, shouldn't i upgrade to the 50 dollar one instead of already upgrading to the 35 dollar one?
Operating system. Im really confused here. So i don't get any windows 7 or 8 if i don't buy it? Im very confused with the descriptin as it says windows 7 64 bit cost money to buy as i have an asus laptop that i bought many years ago from xoticpc and im sure it came along with it. Can someone explain this?
Any other upgrades i would need for my poker laptop? Someone said 8gb more then enough ram so no pt of going to 16gb. True? -
Okay so im told sager doesn't provide windows and one needs to buy it. I have never heard of such a thing as every computer i bought that was dell or asus provided windows.
So should i get windows 7 home premium just like now or should i go and get windows 8.1? Why does windows 7 home premium 64 bit which i use now cost more than windows 8.1?
It cost $95 on xoticpc. I check ebay and i could get the same windows 7 home premium 64 bit for 66 dollars. Should i let xotic pc do it or just buy it off ebay and save close to $30?
I also assume i cannot use a windows 7 64 bit home premium cd? Thus i received an asus one when i bought my i3 370m. I assume i can't use that on the sager right? Im still using the asus laptop so i figure you can use it only one machine at a time? But if i dont use my asus, would it work on the sager? Even if that work, isn't that bad idea because the reinstallation cd is meant for asus laptops and not any other brand of laptops?
Also is there any issues with holdem manager 2 or tableninja 1 on Windows 8.1 or windows 7 ultimate or professional or any other version that isn't windows 7 64 bit home premium? I haven't had issues with windows 7 64 bit premium so i want to know if there would be any issues if i choose windows 8.1 or windows 7 ultimate or some other windows. -

They offer it as an option to those getting their own licenses cheaper. It can be added when ordering.
Shops can also put an unactivated copy of an OS on for you to activate if you wish.
OEM keys such as asus only work for that machine. -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
While the previous computers you have gotten had Windows pre installed it was also worked into the starting price, so you do really pay for it. Just like any hardware that is preinstalled like the CPU, its already installed but also worked into the price. We offer Sager computers without an OS so you dont have to pay for something you may already have, if you dont then you just need to select it on the configuration page and we will install it for you.
If you're comfortable installing the OS yourself, getting a legit copy off eBay isnt a bad idea to save some money. -
Another option is to run Ubuntu 14.04, I have it working on mine w/minimal linux knowledge. I gained some good info System76 Support Glago is the Clevo based notebook with Ubuntu installed.
-
Do you know if the sager laptops if i have windows 7 64 bit configured by xoticpc, it would contain lot of bloatware as oppose to me buying my own copy of windows 7 64 bit on ebay? I was told if i install it myself, it wouldn't have bloatware as oppose to having windows 7 installed. However, someone mentioned sager laptops don't contain any bloatware like asus or dell. Is that true/false? -
Also did everyone here upgrade their wifi card? I see these options as few ppl told me to upgrade to the intel one for $35 more. Is the default built in one not good? Someone told me the bigfoot wifi card isn't necessary but just upgrade to the dual band.
Sager - Built-in 802.11 Wireless B/G/N - Stock Wireless Card + Bluetooth™ 4.0 (SKU - WIFI99)
Sager - Intel® Dual Band AC 7260 802.11 A/AC/B/G/N 2.4/5.0GHz + Bluetooth™ 4.0 (SKU - WIFI98) ( + 35 )
Sager - Bigfoot Networks Killer™ Wireless-N 1202 + Bluetooth 4.0 (SKU - WIFI97) ( + 50 ) -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
It is true there is no bloatware installed.
The intel AC 7260 has been very popular because it supports the new AC standard which the other cards do not. You will need an AC compatible wireless router to take full advantage of it. -
Okay so just to confirm. If the router is ac compatible, then the the intel wifi card would work and thus it would be lot faster compared to the default one. But if the wifi im connecting to isn't an ac wireless router, then it would be no use is that correct?
Do you know if public wifi places... i assume none of those use an AC wireless router then right?
Also aren't the majority of wireless routers made in the last few years almost all are AC compatible? So AC compatible means dual band right? Thus if router says dual band, its AC compatible? Thus using sager laptop with default one as oppose to the dual band wifi will be much slower? I'm curious but how much faster is the connection? Or is it not the connection speed but more so its more updated wirelss card? -
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
If the router is not AC it will still connect with B/G/N (what ever the router supports), as the AC 7260 support B/G/N as well as AC. If the router is not AC then you will not be using the AC of the wifi card.
It depends on the public place. Since AC is fairly new, most public places probably have not upgraded to an AC compatible wireless router.
AC and Dual band are different, dual band is referring to 2.4 and 5.0Ghz capabilities.
You would probably never see the difference in the AC/B/G/N on public wifi routers as even the slowest of them (B) can transfer up to 11Mb/s which can be faster then many internet connections are.
AC will benefit you the most at home/work where you are transferring large files within your network as it can transfer up to 867Mb/s -
Hey all i got the sager laptop and it looks pretty good.
When i first started the laptop, it gave me option for windows update which is recommended, something else or ask me later. I chosed recommended is that fine? I wasn't sure to put that or ask me later as i was kinda worried recommended might make my computer lag a bit.
Also, the computer at the moment seems fast. But how can i tell if i have any bloatware or any processes that i don't want so this laptop doesn't lag later on? I do see theres a few programs there when i click on uninstall programs that are like bison camera and intel pro etc. Am i suppose to leave them there or just remove them.
Do you need me to list all the programs. I want to make sure theres no bloatware on this new sager laptop of mine. Currently using my old asus laptop still at the moment while typing this. -
There is no need to list anything. There's no bloatware if it's from Sager. Everything they have installed beside the standard Windows distrubution is for the specfic hardware you ordered. The Bison and Intel stuff are the drivers you need.
-
Bought it from xoticpc. I used the laptop without any issues with the keyboard. I then connected it to an external monitor and using my own wired keyboard. Thus using a usb port and connect my wired keyboard to it. I then disconnected my keyboard and monitor so i could use laptop by itself.
Right now most of the keys on the right side of keyboard doesn't work. J, k, l, u, i , o, p, n, m doesn't work. Enter button works however.
Does anyone know what this is happening? -
Sounds like a software issue to me.
-
Do i have to take out the screws each time if i want the battery out?
-
Yes, there's no other way i see to take it out. Poorly built laptop. I had to add some RAM and even though i was being careful i still managed to crack the bezel. It's just not practical.

In its defense most thin laptops are designed this way. I do agree that the design on that strip above the keyboard is horrible. It seems far too easy to break one of the tabs or bend the entire piece when removing it. I will check with RJTech if they have it available as a spare part and what it costs if so.

Not sure if you have noticed the latest BIOS-Update from Dec 2014. At least I haven't. It improves DisplayPort stability. In case you have problems with DisplayPort connected devices you might consider updating your BIOS to version 1.03.05, which also comes with a new EC version 1.03.03. You can get it usually from the driver download page of the company where you bought your Laptop. But if everything works flawless, then I guess it's not worth updating.
-
I did, but I am not sure if I should update or not. I haven't had it connected to DisplayPort so I cannot say whether it works or not. My BIOS version is 1.0, I haven't touched it at all. When I'm running on battery, laptop is sluggish. I guess BIOS update wouldn't help in improving performances?
-
Im just curious but did anyone else break their ethernet port on this laptop? I mostly use wifi but many times i use wired but when you put the ethernet cable into the port, it doesn't go easily... theres a thing that blocks it so you have to put it through it if that makes sense? Well many times i would charge my laptop and not looking i would jam it to the ethernet port by mistake few times and then i noticed my ethernet port is then broken. I didn't even do it that hard... im curious if anyone else broke their ethernet port on this laptop because its extremely easy to break it unless you are extremely careful. I mean if i jam it a few times into another laptop it wont happen but this laptop it just jams really easily and then notice later on it had these issues.
-
I updated my BIOS a few days ago, because I want to use the DisplayPort soon. Worked flawlessly, if you strictly follow the instructions to update EC and BIOS.
Drew: This laptop with its lightweightness and thinness isn't made for "jamming" anything into it. The flap which covers the ethernet port, which you seem to have broken, was part of the connector. It makes this "click"-sound when connecting a cable and then holds the connector inside. It works for me in everyday use of clicking and unclicking. Bigger laptops don't need a sensitive flap like this. Because this one is so thin, they couldn't avoid making it like that, I guess.Last edited: Feb 22, 2015 -
Well then I guess there is no point for me to update BIOS since I don't use DisplayPort at the moment. Although, I would like to see some improvements when using it on battery, but I guess most laptops "lag" on battery.
I tried using ethernet port once and it was pain to get the cord out, but I don't complain at all. WiFi works great. -
I too had a VERY hard time removing the Ethernet cord, my machine had to be serviced for another issue and they replaced the motherboard, now the cord comes out with minimal effort. I was really impressed with the service.
Agreed there is a lag on battery but I have learned to live with it. BTW what kind of battery life are you getting, I see about 3.5 hours with ~40% brightness and surfing the web, playing music from soundcloud , etc. -
I also see about 3.5 hours with the same setting like you Josea. I switched to Ubuntu and lag is gone. Laptop flies now.
JOSEA likes this. -
Regarding the ethernet port:
Today I was experimenting with different cables and found out that how much effort it takes to plug an ethernet cable in or out depends on the cable itself.
I tested three different cables. One took me a minute of wiggling to get out. I guess some of you must have a cable like this and I can imagine that the laptop port will not be happy about these in the long run.
Another one was easily removable within 2-3 sec after plugging in and a third one went in and out soft and smooth every time.TomJGX likes this. -
Hello,
Could you help me with this question?
I installed the BIOS 1.03.05 + EC 1.03.03 ( http://repo.palkeo.com/clevo-mirror/W740SU/), and I enabled UEFI and RAID modes in the BIOS. I have two drives so I would like to create a RAID Volume using Intel RST. However, when I go to the Intel RST menu there is no option to create a RAID Volume (as seen in this picture: https://www.dropbox.com/s/rgeqs1ufwi8v08d/2015-06-10 16.28.21.jpg?dl=0). Is it not yet supported in this motherboard?
Thank you in advance,Last edited: Jun 10, 2015 -
The Linux Intel P-State driver is strangely aggressive compared to what Microsoft does. You might want to change its settings to see if that does anything to your idle temperature.
-
ehm.. bought clevo w740su, happy with it and that i coming from dell e7440 with same full hd display... anyway, can somebody tell me ( i am beginner ) how to update bios on it? i can have bios Schenkers webpage, ( mySN.de ) but there are 2 files and i really don't know how to be honest. i am running on Win 8.1 64bit. thank you
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
It's going to depend on manufacturing tollerances, fractions of a millimetre in the oposite directions on the plug and port and it's either loose or very tight.
@cEvin_K
Is there are particular reason for updating the bios for yourself? -
@Meaker not really, my current version is 1.3.2 on both, but turn off hyperthreading or some more functions will be handy.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Talk to your reseller about getting the latest file.
-
Meaker: well i know where to get the files from, from mySN.de for example, just need to know how to update the bios, as there are 2 files to update. also if i download a non clevo branded BIOS and install it, is that ok?
-
so about 8 month ago my schenker branded clevo forgot its ethernet mac and now I finally got the time to send it in. In fact I had to send it in 3 times because they messed up their work
but now I am happy again.
In fact they got me a new main board and now I have the 2,1 GHz base clocked i7-4760HQ which is faster than my old 4750... even if it is just 100MHz
also got a new keyboard which is really a lot better than the early ones, and a new LCD-Panel, but it still has a lot of glare and burn in
but hey, it is still a very very nice screen.
-
Meaker@Sager Company Representative
Well hopefully you are sorted now at least and can just get on with using the machine
-
Support.3@XOTIC PC Company Representative
What screen panel did you get? You can check for the model using HWInfo. Just curious as burn in isnt common with LCD screens. -
Hey there,
Is this laptop still a good choise? Are still there issues about throttling while on battery and also after switching on AC?
Would this be a better choice comparte to the W230SD? Gaming performances are optional to me. -
If you think the form factor is acceptable, I believe you should get the W230SD.
W740SU has much slower GPU but also worse battery life. Other than being a bit thinner and lighter there seems to be nothing positive. They have been focusing a bit too much on being thin, and put the machine in an awkward position. It's not as thin as some of the more popular options out there, neither does it offer better endurance, and the performance gain is limited especially when you have gaming concerns.Last edited: Aug 29, 2015 -
Thanks, i didn't pick any of these two. I chosen an Acer Aspire v3 with Core i5 and Iris 6100 for 599€.

Long time not coming here.
I modded the BIOS and unlock the Raid option. I'm using W740SU with Raid 1 Array now with no problem. -
