My GPU temps aren't good either. My CPU is averging in the low 40's doing basic web surfing and idle, but the GPU is constantly 58-62ish range. Guess I will try to repaste. Furmark it got up to 93c according to the stress test.

Lol huge dissapointment :D especially when I was told that was one of the reasons for getting the ATI.

Well shipped this Mon, and its passing through IL probably further by know. So im guessing 2-3 weeks ? lol seems like a lifetime.

    How about you ?

EH, don't let my results get you others have much lower temps. I just repasted and need to let it cure but my temps were no better in furmark and I hit 103 at one point with stock clocks. I am going to try the OCZ Freeze I bought as a backup to my X23 because I am thinking it is the application of the X23 to the GPU at this point. I seemed to of nailed my CPU though, temps keep getting better and better. I'd love to see this thing idle at 38c.

The Heatsink needs to be pushed and held down very hard while screwing it in(Magnetic Screwdriver will come in handy if your alone)... I went through this as well but that is what needs to be done to make the best contact...

If your hitting 103 in furmark i can guarantee if you yank off the Heatsink you will see you are not making proper contact at all... I told Moo to do this as well and it made a world of difference for him as you can see in his temps posted and mine as well.....

So dot method, alot of pressure while screwing heatsink in place ?

Thats what I generally do with my paste, just want you to clarify it :D

I tried both the dot method and the spread but i found a little more paste then usual was doing the better job so i stuck with the spread in this case...

Since everything is so easy accessible you can just try as you like and keep doing it till your happy :)...

Took me a few go's at it to get it how i liked it temp wise...

If you just set the heatsink on the GPU and screwed it down without applying pressure at all you will find the heatsink only making contact with about 1/4 of the core.... Not good at all lol..

Is it bad to remove that sticker that was on the CPU vent? Why was it covered in the first place while the GPU's wasn't? I took it off and my CPU while doing basic web surfing idles between 44-46 now instead of 50-52 before.

My GPU (ATI) still idles in the low 50s (all the different GPU readings) even though I made sure the heatsink is on tight after I put some thermal paste. Room temperature is around 24 though.

Quad - Thanks for replying. What temps are you seeing on your CPU and GPU doing normal web surfing or idle? I just reapplied my GPU paste spreading it this time (X-23) and put A LOT of force on the GPU and HWInfo shows a steady 47-50c in a room with 3 computers and a ps3 running :) Much better then what it was before, but still seems high for idle. CPU has been usually 41-42c.

Idle temps on the GPU are almost exactly what your seeing 48-50.... These cards idle much higher compared to the Nvidias...

CPU temps on my 920 idle are generally around 45-47 ish ... Not looking at them to often though as everything is running perfect and im not a Temp freak :)...

I have run games for Hours even just letting them sit there while im doing other things and the highest i usually saw was 71-75 and this is just on a little lapdesk without the machine propped up so i am VERY happy with my temps :)...

After seeing the temps on this 5870 compared to the G73 its a world of difference ..... Could not be happier honestly...

Sounds good Quad, I think I am in decent shape then. Thx for the help. I've had the laptop for half a day and already like it way better then the Asus, although to be fair my Asus was screwed out of the box :) The Clevo feels like a quality notebook where as the G73 felt like a toy to me, dunno and having piece of mind this thing isn't going to just randomly die is even better. The only flaw the Clevo has is I can't make it through dinner on the battery :D

Hey quad can you do me a favor and tell me what clocks your GPU runs at default? My desktop 5870 will underclock itself on the desktop/slower clocks but I noticed the 5870 mobility isn't doing that.

Here is my run, i7 820qm ES, 4gb of OCZ ram with 940/1100 clocks on gpu. 945/1100 would crash back to desktop but I finally got a good thermal paste apply and am going to rerun. Idle temps are now a steady 52c which is the lowest thus far out of 6 applies :) (rice grain method+a lot of heatsink pressure.)

There are quite a few between the the threads in the sager forums and the asus g73 threads, but which in particular you are you interested in? I am going to be installing dragon age and alien vs predator when I get up and probably team fortress 2.

Are you sure it has nothing to do with your GPU not downclocking itself or placing itself in 2D mode when it should be. Some Drivers can be the cause of higher clock rates sometimes. Have you checked to see what Clocks it is running at while idle?

At Idle I would say worse, I got my Nvidia at 35-45 :) very pleased.

Know gotta do the whole shebang with the ATI again and report back when I get it.

Lol A fair while yet matey, its not even reach Mr.Clevo himself yet. As soon as I get it back I will get:

    Temps before and after re-paste
    Synthetic Benchmarks
Gaming Benchmarks: (Crysis, Batman AA, MWF, Alone in the dark) They are all I brought with me to the US. :(
And an overalL comparison to the 285M

Ill PM them to you as soon as I have finished.

This is about $180 down the toilet for me in shipping(I just can't wait 3 weeks). Good thing I sold some crap I didn't need anymore for $200 to fund my insanity.

My idle temps were in the high 40s. Batman AA peaked at 65C.

Thats why the Desktop 5870 idle temps are MUCH lower then ours because they underclock to 200/300.... The mobile version does downclock to an extent but nothing like the desktop card...

I can only assume they had issues downclocking the mobile card to the extent of the desktop...

I know there are issues with the desktop cards idle clocks especially with Multimonitors as i had those issues with flickering in 2d mode on my 5870 desktop card....

Yeah i asked Moo to take a look and see if we can downclock the cards in 2D mode since the fan is running at 30% constant since its trying to keep the temps under control ....

The fans are not very noisy in this machine even under load but when i am just browsing the web i dont see the need to hear the fan blowing constantly ....

No silent mode on this laptop?
My M860TU had it and it was a cool feature.

It has a fan option to turn it from Normal to slow. That reduces noise if its a big deal to you. By no means are these laptops loud :)

Iam hesitant due to the reports of downclocking issues on GDDR5 ram on mobile cards....

The ram nver drops from 1000 even in 2d clocks. The core drops down to 200 but never the memory and Clevo did it for a reason so i am inclined to let some one else try

I'll chip in here even though I've got the Asus G73JH. The vRAM also doesn't downclock for me on battery (core does though) and it seems the voltage isn't changing either (from 1.15V or whatever it is to .95V). ATI may be doing something in the drivers to temporarily mitigate the GSOD issues until they get a real fix.
