The brighter the better i say and i can be somewhat picky when it comes to screens.... Originally the M98nu used the same screen as the W90(which i owned) and that was a very dim and colorless screen... So before i go through all the trouble of buying the X8100 i want to do my homework and make sure i dont end up with another dull screen ala W90...

i don´t think M98 colorless..... I see my M98 much colorful than the LP154WU1 on the M86....So i changed it to a LTN154CT02, much better now.

From what I read most all that have np9850 really like the display, as well as the chassis and cooling of this rig is proven, so the X8100 should be winner :)

But a little loud imo, and power consume is also a problem for me. So i sold it. The max NB i can accept is under 15.4".....It´s a pity the M86 didn´t use a LED screen or ill upgrade to a RGB panel.....

Well i just came from the M17xR2 with the RGB screen and im not expecting it to be even remotely as good as that one but also the G73 i have has a very nice screen its LED backlit though vs CCFL.... The M17x is so loud its on the disturbing side so i would hope the M98/X8100 is not that loud :O...

Justin - so as to clear up confusion, can you let us know (Everest will tell you) the model name and number of the screen in the X8100 chassis you have?
I know which one my M980NU has so it'd be nice to have a comparison, as then I can try and find some decent info on what they're like comparatively.

It could be theres some confusion somewhere, or a few screens in circulation causing what seems to be a bit of a mixed response to single vs dual bulb. If you can tell us which screens you currently have, then the answer should be loud and clear and quell 99% of the questions? :)

Hell brightness is important in a screen, but black levels, contrast ratio, response time and some level of accuracy at various brightness is also important to me :)

The bottom line is that Sager simply does not know for sure at this moment if the Sager NP8120 is using the same screen as the Sager NP9850, but they are going to check part numbers in the morning to see if it is the same as the Sager NP9850, which was a dual lamp screen.

Thanks for the update, I wondered whether that was the case, or whether there was several different models out there dependant on batch/shipping date. Hell it'd be nice if they had used the latest 18.4 model from CMO as that's an RGB LED (N184H06-L02 http://www.cmo.com.tw/opencms/cmo/products/notebook/products_notebook_N184H6_L02.html?__locale=en), but if they'd had that confirmed they'd be shouting about it :)

At least going by my model, the M980NU used the N184H04 panel (mines -L04 which I presume is a batch/minor revision).

I'll be interested to see what the final score turns out to be!

Thanks Donald and someone else is checking for me as well but initially you also said it was a Single lamp on the 9850(see below) ... The original NP9850 came with the same Samsung as the W90 did(single lamp) and i confirmed it with the reseller a couple hours ago... They had the old everest specs when they first got the NP9850 in stock saved off and showed me the Samsung panel model number ... So possibly somewhere down the line they moved on to a Dual lamp screen ...

I dont know why there is different information coming from Sager Engineers compared to sales. Again we have already spoken with Sager Engineers days ago and confirmed Dual Lamp as with the 9850. Maybe we were miss-informed by them, we will check for a 2nd confirmation. :)

Its all good man and i hope you dont think im doing any finger pointing or accusing anyone of lying etc.... I am just trying to make sure before i waste my time and money that it is what they say it is :)..

The only part that has struck me abit odd is no one else lists the machine as Dual Lamp that i have seen and to me that would be a strong selling point so i guess thats why i started digging to get to the bottom of it ...

BTW, I completely understand Quad I would do the same :D :D

Neil from Kobalt has confirmed the X8100 (at the least the ones appearing in the UK) uses the same dual bulb screen as the later M980NUs did (although it seems there were a few variations between what SUBrevision screen was used on the M980NU - L01 to L04). The screen is use is the Chi Mei N184H4-L04 on his models.

Either way, again they appear to have a dual CCFL screen, rather than single :)

Yes, you truly could kill with this beast if you hit someone with it in a mad moment of self defence/pure keyboard-warrior-ness :D

Tis a bit of a tank... I half get the feeling it'd still work after smashing someone with it too, I think the laptop (overall) would probably be tougher than them, even if the screen didnt make it :D
Even if the casing is reinforced plastic, the chassis is DEFINATELY metal :)

At some point it quits being portable, right?

Remember that XPS 2010? Cool (but quite underpowered) as it was, still not very portable.

Yeah, agree with you on that sleey0. Imo most of these 18,4'' + (mabye 17'' + as well) are suited for more specially needs like LANs, desktop replacements, multimediacenters and so on. Considering the size, weight and battery life they can't really be called "portable laptops".

17" is my own personal limit.

I wouldn't be opposed to the X8100 because it is a very nice system. I think I'd go with the M17x before I'd go with the X8100, though.

I had the W90VP myself and went from 15,4'' to 18,4'' and acctually liked it. But I used it mainly for LANs and Blu-ray watching so a bigger monitor for me was important, and Alienware firstly costs too much in Norway and secondly is too "gaminglooky" for my personal taste. Loved the design of the Asus and the X8100 is more similar to that. :)

But yeah, I guess 18,4'' might be too big for most people.

Myself? about 11.5 stone and roughly 5ft 10", its used a desktop replacement and taking it down to my m8s once in a while, although i don't find it overly heavy its defo not something that can sit on ya lap and since space is a premium in the house its better then a desktop.

17-18 is a nice size range. You get a bit envious sometimes of the 14-15 inchers, but then you look at your dual HD's and better GPU's and feel ok. You get a bit envious of the 19-20 inchers but not of the extra weight and bulk.

Im using stock drivers until Nvidia bringing out newer ones, this is still a relatively new card so I would stick with your stock drivers for know. The ones im running are the 182.46 (I think)

I have found that the official WHQL 186.81 Nvidia Drivers work just as well, if not better than the stock ones. Rivatuner no longer crashes now as well.

Don't forget that the previous Drivers probably worked well with the GTX 280M which is not much different to the GTX 285M.

Out of the many different Drivers that I have tested, including Dox optimised ones, 186.81 is without a doubt the best in terms of performance and stability. The newer ones I tried that were released after wards were no where near as good. Many others in this forum also agree that 186.81 are the best too.
