The #1 factor is always, "Does Clevo feel like it?"
Right now, the answer is, no. Whether because it would require a redesign, or to not gouge sales, I don't know.
-
I just dont see it coming in anything smaller than the d900f or x8100 (and yes the m17x as well)..
I really didnt expect such good specs on this card.. hope it performs as well too.. -
with such power input ... the 480 must run hot ...
was wondering if anyone know what type of temp the 480 will idle at ?
not speculation of course ...
does anyone have the actual figures ?
-
-
You have to understand that 100W TDP is difficult to cool down. Few laptops will be able to carry such a video card and cool it properly. In consequence very few 480M cards will actually be sold. This is why it is better to go for a lower TDP because manufacturers will be able to sell more chips at a lower price.
-
Did they do idle power consumption? -
hmmm the specs look good, but still a bit on the sad side not to support 15"ish lappies. 352 shader cores in a lappy?? that's never heard of before! lol
-
-
As I've said, the new 480M will most likely match a 5870MR in SLI.
-
The Mob. 5870 in Crossfire, which are dual 5750s, are no slouch. -
Yeah there is no way that will happen... It will no doubt be faster then a 5870 but not 2x as fast, that much is certain
...
For how much it costs though it should be....
-
not 2x as fast, probably 30-50%, crossfire don't give 100% performance boost does it. If it could just be 30-40% faster than 5870MR, it would be worth the cost, since that's about what a 5870MR CF will perform anyways, minus all the dual GPU cons.

I myself am holding off predicting how fast it is. Certainly as I said in another thread the CF 5870's is the most 'bang for the buck'. Of course this doesn't mean I'm not getting the 480M...
-
Well, considering that a 5770 is much slower than even the 5850 desktop, and on directx 11 games, the 465 is even faster than the 5850, in fact about the same as the 5870 desktop, I would say that the 480M is a card designed more towards modern dx11 games.
-
Its going to be 345 damn very cheap but i will wait for you Hemi to have it. Better to have best of both worlds.
-
Here's AnandTech's latest on the card (same specs as the previous link, but with some additional speculation). It's looking to be a little stronger than I expected it to be.
It looks like Nvidia has gone for a rather large number of shaders, but at the cost of low clock speeds. I would still suggest that the overall performance is only going to be ~20% better at most than the MR5870 at stock clocks. However, the low clock speeds probably mean the GTX 480M will be very overclockable. Power consumption would probably rise to 150W+ with a heavy overclock, but at the same time I would expect the potential for a big performance boost. Basically, I think that with an overclock you could hit dual-card levels of performance, but with dual-card levels of power consumption. -
Well it's already expected to match a 280M SLI in performance on stock, question is, how will a single card of it fare against 2x5870MR.
Then again, 2 of these monsters in X7200 is really going to be monstrous, with a 3D display on top of that, price is going to be monstrous as well. -

-
lol you guys are back to this card being twice as fast as a 5870, you guys are cute.
-
Larry@LPC-Digital Company Representative
The x7200 that I would want will probably be a retail of over $4,500 I'm sure.

Yeah ill give it a 20-25% bump over the 5870 stock vs stock ... Overclocked is another story and lets be realistic here to OC these cards beyond just some synthetic benches would be just crazy...
Cranking up this card to 150w and running it during a 2 or 3 hour gaming session ? lol... 2 of em ? Kaboom!!
Either way i cant wait to see some benches...
I also cant wait to see Hemi's $5000.00 machine that is for sure...
-
20-25% on directx 10 games, for directx 11 games (Where more FPS actually really matters), from the bench of 465 GTX, it will likely be at least 50% faster.
-
These paper launches are always a blast because we can all just sit around and speculate till our hearts content ... Much in the same way we did with the 5870m and it being 256bit vs 128bit etc....
Hopefully someone gets a machine to test soon so we can put all this stuff to rest .... -
Too bad I can't pick one up until... October.
All of the fun with experimenting will be over by then. -
You have to take into account the fact that the GTX 465 is clocked ~43% faster than the GTX 480M. If you have a ridiculously well cooled laptop, it might be possible to get the same clock speeds as the GTX 465, though.
-
Like right now i was all about grabbing 2 480 GTXs for my desktop till my friend bought a pair and they ran at 94 degrees under load lol.... So he went from water cooling just his CPU to his GPUs as well and of course the small fortune that went along with it ....
My desktop 5870s on air hit around 65 during gaming... They are not as fast no but they are nice and cool...
I dont want a laptop GPU that is a decent margin faster but is blazing hot all the time and when it comes to laptops your options are far less then a desktop so id rather do all the homework before hand and let everyone else deal with the issues and then decide...
Generally i dont have that much patience and find out the hard way though...
-
Well, it's comparing against 5770, and 5870MR is downclocked from there as well, though probably not as much.
-
Yeah, the 5770 is only ~20% faster clocked than the MR5870.

Bad news from Italy. This is a (translated) e-mail I've just recieved from Santech, the main italian Clevo reseller:
Dear xxxxx, we're not planning to introduce the GTX on the N56 (their name for the Clevo W860CU 15.6") because:
1. the card is way too hot and the dissipation system of the N56 might not be enough;
2. the price of this new VGA is exagerately high (more than twice) if we compare it with the ATI M.R. HD 5870, even though the nVidia doesn't have twice the performance of the ATI.
Cheers.
SANTECH -
Not surprising, really.
-
Nope not surprising at all. I think its better to stick with ati better for overclocking and benchmarking but nvidia does has better desktop drivers to deal with. Has anyone tried desktop drivers mobility modder for the 5870? How much of a difference is it?
-

Will there ever be an answer to the 5870 by Nvidia for the W860CU?
-
I doubt so, since 480M is designed for 17" and the answer to 5870MR, and Nvidia didn't really expect anyone to put a 5870MR into a 15".
-
kevindd992002 Notebook Virtuoso
Yeah, I'm not expecting the 480M to be in a W860CU though (and the price is ridiculuously high) but at least they might produce a lower-end card than the 480M but higher-end than the 285M?
-
Then we might as well continue using 5870MR. Though 480M in 8690 is very plausible though, as long as Clevo supports it in bios, considering that the cooling capability in 8690 is about the same as 8760.
-
mySN got back to me about the question regarding GTX 480M and W860CU. The GTX 480M would work in any MXM 3.0b slot provided that the PSU is strong enough.
However, for me, the GTX 480M is just too expensive at the moment... time to get a MR HD 5870. -
Which means I can get it to work in my 860CU if I just get a bigger power supply? That's great, I'll get a 480M, when the price comes down that is... Though judging by 285M's price, I doubt it.
-
-
It's not power that you should be worried about. It's overheating, the 480M in the W860CU WILL OVERHEAT!
-
If 480M can go into a 8760, it can go into a 8690. Don't underestimate the cooling in the 8690, 480M is not a big deal when the cooling can handle a 5870MR with 72C max furmark.
-
Those who are thinking about upgrading, its Not happening - even the D900F and X8100 wont be getting the upgrade, instead you have to buy a whole new laptop if you want this gpu:

It's not just the TDP, a 285M has 75TDP but runs cooler than the 5870MR.

Good Job Kobalt! -
Almost all resellers have D900F with the 480M GTX already, Hellcry's talking about upgrade.
GTX 480M 2GB GDDR5 DX11 PhysX 100W GPU?
